Abstract:
The place of the research paper in first-year composition (FYC) courses is often debated in composition forums. Many argue that the a-disciplinary nature of FYC doesn't allow instructors to teach the research paper in a way that will be transferable to disciplinary writing tasks, while others say that it is possible, as long as we have a thorough understanding of the kinds of writing tasks students will face in the disciplines and specifically teach writing skills that will be transferable. To identify these more generalizable writing skills to be emphasized, I interviewed 14 professors at Brigham Young University from different disciplines about the research papers they teach within their upper-division disciplinary courses and the kinds of researching and writing skills they expect students to have mastered before enrolling in these courses. I collated the results of the interviews and categorized 22 skills into four categories: writing process knowledge, genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, and researching knowledge, finding correlation between the 22 skills I identified with skills identified by both John Bean and Carra Leah Hood, lending credence to the value of my identified skills as worthwhile to be focused on in FYC. I draw on Amy Devitt's idea that the school genres we teach in FYC are antecedent genres to assert that teaching a research paper in FYC outside of the constraints of any one discipline can provide a viable and valuable learning experience, provided that it is taught with an emphasis on these writing skills that are most valued across the disciplines, and provided it is taught as a step along the way to later mastery of disciplinary genres.

Abstract:
This study traces the transfer of writing-related knowledge and concepts from the composition classroom into the writing assignments composed by students within the same course. Working in a first-year-composition classroom taught through a writing-about-writing curriculum, the researcher observed students as they navigated from the initial learning of concepts such as rhetorical situations, writing processes, and discourse communities, into an application of these concepts in various writing assignments, including rhetorical analyses and discourse community profiles. By analyzing a composition instructor's objectives for her assignments and observing the interaction between students and their instructor in a single composition course for the duration of one semester, the researcher traced how students operationalized knowledge from the classroom and applied it in their own writing. After tracing this operalization through interviews with the instructor, observation of class activities and analysis of assignment sheets and student papers, the researcher proposes that instructors may encourage transfer within their composition classrooms by adequately presenting assignment objectives to students, and by allowing sufficient scaffolding of writing tasks. In this way, the researcher explains that students may be able to understand the objectives of their writing assignments in a way that may encourage them to apply the knowledge they learned in the classroom to the writing tasks assigned by their instructor.

Abstract:
With respect to matters of identities as a treacherous and sensitive subject in today’s college classroom, this project explores concepts like identity, otherness, resistance, otherization, writer’s identity, and identity negotiation; and interrogates how these concepts may affect learning and professional relationship among the class members in the First Year Composition Classroom. The crux of the argument in this research is that process and social construction collaborative pedagogies can be effective in negotiating the resistance and otherness manifesting from identity dichotomies in the First Year Composition classroom.

Abstract:
Online education has received excessive attention in recent decades as its characteristics and potential have undergone intense debate and scrutiny. Similar debate and scrutiny surround the content of first-year composition (FYC) courses. As we continue to define what composition studies entails, we redefine what we study in FYC. Yet discussions of blended delivery mode---using both online and on-ground teaching methods---get lost amid these debates. This dissertation addresses the dearth of research on blended online writing instruction by asserting the essential nature of connections between the content and the delivery of FYC courses. Through case studies of two experienced instructors teaching FYC in a blended environment for the first time, this dissertation evaluates the composition--both as a noun and as a verb—of FYC courses in light of the technology involved. Through an analysis of interviews with instructors, students, and faculty involved with FYC, I highlight the points of contact--the interfaces—that themselves create the experience of a class. This analysis applies interface theory from rhetoric and composition to the pedagogical acts of teaching FYC and reveals how attention to classroom interfaces can benefit our pedagogy. This project also incorporates student performance data (in the form of portfolio evaluations), student perception data (in the form of surveys), and comparative institutional data (in the form of website analysis) to better understand the varied causes, effects, and implementations of blended learning. By looking outside the classroom environment, I show how schools influence the way blended courses are perceived by those who create them. The differences in student and instructor expectations for this kind of class emerged as particularly influential in determining how successful a blended course can be. The perspective taken by an instructor in terms of experience and expertise also emerged as a significant determinant of perceived success, particularly for instructors themselves. This dissertation reveals the delicate balance instructors must navigate between relying on expertise in the field and exploring the course delivery as a novice. This balance allows instructors to be responsive, flexible, and dynamic in their classes while also assisting students in their efforts to better understand FYC course content. Overall, this dissertation defines and advocates for a hybrid approach to FYC instruction as an essential evolution of our pedagogical praxis. Students lead increasingly hybrid lives and learn in increasingly hybrid ways. Instructors must adopt hybridity in their classes to accommodate not only students' changing learning styles but also the changing nature of composition as a field and writing as its subject matter. And finally, institutions must consistently define and implement principles of hybridity to help reduce confusion and frustration across the disciplines. Suggestions for educators and institutions alike are provided to help meet the needs of today's students.

Abstract:
As writing about writing (WAW) research enters its "second wave," characterized not only by an increase in data-driven studies that theorize and assess the effectiveness of WAW curricula (Downs) but also by an increase in its prominence and adaptation, particularly among emerging writing studies scholars and teachers (e.g., Bird et al.), a space has opened for more and varied types of research, especially empirical research, to determine its effectiveness and to produce more solid recommendations for training and curriculum development, especially for those who are new to the field. This case study, which highlights how a novice teacher responds to a new teaching experience, aims to address the dearth of empirical research on WAW curricula and to aid other graduate instructors interested in teaching WAW or program administrators interested in implementing WAW. The study reports results from data collected (e.g., interviews, in-class observations, teachings logs) on the experience of a second-year MA graduate student in composition and rhetoric as he taught a WAW-based curriculum in a first-year composition (FYC) class in the beginning of 2016. His twenty students were also research subjects, but only a small portion of their data is reported here. The instructor's experience, chronicled in narrative form, began optimistically, though with a hint of skepticism, and ended in discouragement and even pessimism. These results were largely unexpected due to the instructor's confidence with and knowledge of WAW history, assumptions, and pedagogy and experience teaching FYC. However, his struggle with the approach reveals and confirms several important points for anyone hoping to teach or implement WAW. Particularly, new WAW instructors need sustained training, support, and mentoring to help them properly temper their expectations for the course, correctly and usefully interpret their experiences teaching WAW, successfully transfer prior teaching knowledge and methods to the WAW classroom, and ultimately find their place in WAW instruction.

This thesis work was made to optimize the writing of the construction specifications at FKA. These construction specifications are created before each plant modifications that is started because requirements from the Swedish radiation safety authority (SSM) and internally on Forsmarks nuclear group as constructions / implementation documentation The study was done through seven interviews of two people at three different groups involved in the construction specification and an interview from the group accredited verification. The four selected groups were selected through an extensive analytical work resulted in an elimination matrix where these four groups was considered to be most involved with the construction specification. The questions asked to these individuals were based on the instructions and sample text that are described in the construction specification. To ensure the quality of the thesis were to limit itself to the chapters that were considered most relevant to improve. The analysis revealed a number of points that should be improved, partly into the routines when writing the construction specification and when ether sample text or suggestions should be changed and complemented. Some of the most interesting results where that there are some relatively simple improvements that can be implemented with a small amount of work. Some of those results where an implementation of a table for the radiation in a specific room as well as using an excel file where all people involved in the construction specification can make suggestions for the updated version of the operating instructions. Other improvements are more complicated to implement as they are soft issues like a continuous improvement of the communication between different groups at FKA

Abstract:
Fluidised cracking catalysts, which contain a form of zeolite-Y as the main catalytically active component, are widply used commercially for the conversion of crude oil into more profitable product streams. During the cracking reaction, these catalysts are contaminated with vanadium which has a marked effect on the crystallinity of the zeolite-Y component and, as a consequence, activity and selectivity for hydrocarbon processing is degraded. The purpose of this work has been to carry out a detailed investigation, on the laboratory scale, of the effect of vanadium contaminatioil on both commercial and model rare earth ion-exchanged zeolite-Y catalysts. Vanadium contamination was achieved using a standard (Mitchell) method and catalysts were subject to treatment conditions similar to those found in the regenerator part of a fluidised catalytic cracking unit using a specially constructed furnace. Investigations of the solid state chemical reactions between vanadium and rare earth compounds, both in the presence and absence of silica and alumina support materials typical of those found in commercial catalysts, extend the study. Extensive use is made of magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (5 IV and 27AI), X-ray powder diffraction and surface area measurements for sample characterisation. The apparatus for surface area measurements was constructed during the course of the work. It is suggested that the reduction in crystallinity of rare earth ion-exchanged zeolite-Y in the presence of vanadium is associated with the removal of rare earth ions from the cage structure of the zeolite. The extent of this process depends upon the details of the treatment conditions and important factors are identified. The observation of the formation of LaV04 in a range of hydrothermally treated lanthanum ion-exchanged zeolite-Y samples supports the proposed model.

Abstract:
According to reliable statistics, electrical fire ignition sources have a notable impact regarding the generation of fires and explosions. Electrical equipment and installations can also be the victims of fire. This is due to the wearing of insulation, the reduction of dielectric strength of the air and other factors. This combination opens up a space for a wide range of experimental and educational research which until now has seen little development. The state of the art of electrical fire is introduced illustrating it with electro technical laboratory experiments as well as with real story cases. The electric arc which produces the ejection of hot particles is one of the electrical fire ignition sources, has seen little investigation. The development of experiments can help in finding out more about this phenomenon. A case study by the fire department of Catalonia can be used as an explanation, which suggests that there is a direct relationship between ventilation and air conditioning ducts made of aluminum and electrical ignition. The phenomenon electrical breakdown in gases has a special characteristic in the presence of fire. It has an effect on electricity supply, fire extinguisher security, fire investigations and the fire spread. This has brought about experiments to illustrate the point. The experiments are related with the behavior of high voltage power lines in presence of fire in our environment

Kluth, Stephan. "Quantitative modeling and analysis with FMC-QE." Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2011. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2011/5298/.

Full text
Abstract:
The modeling and evaluation calculus FMC-QE, the Fundamental Modeling Concepts for Quanti-tative Evaluation [1], extends the Fundamental Modeling Concepts (FMC) for performance modeling and prediction. In this new methodology, the hierarchical service requests are in the main focus, because they are the origin of every service provisioning process. Similar to physics, these service requests are a tuple of value and unit, which enables hierarchical service request transformations at the hierarchical borders and therefore the hierarchical modeling. Through reducing the model complexity of the models by decomposing the system in different hierarchical views, the distinction between operational and control states and the calculation of the performance values on the assumption of the steady state, FMC-QE has a scalable applica-bility on complex systems. According to FMC, the system is modeled in a 3-dimensional hierarchical representation space, where system performance parameters are described in three arbitrarily fine-grained hierarchi-cal bipartite diagrams. The hierarchical service request structures are modeled in Entity Relationship Diagrams. The static server structures, divided into logical and real servers, are de-scribed as Block Diagrams. The dynamic behavior and the control structures are specified as Petri Nets, more precisely Colored Time Augmented Petri Nets. From the structures and pa-rameters of the performance model, a hierarchical set of equations is derived. The calculation of the performance values is done on the assumption of stationary processes and is based on fundamental laws of the performance analysis: Little's Law and the Forced Traffic Flow Law. Little's Law is used within the different hierarchical levels (horizontal) and the Forced Traffic Flow Law is the key to the dependencies among the hierarchical levels (vertical). This calculation is suitable for complex models and allows a fast (re-)calculation of different performance scenarios in order to support development and configuration decisions. Within the Research Group Zorn at the Hasso Plattner Institute, the work is embedded in a broader research in the development of FMC-QE. While this work is concentrated on the theoretical background, description and definition of the methodology as well as the extension and validation of the applicability, other topics are in the development of an FMC-QE modeling and evaluation tool and the usage of FMC-QE in the design of an adaptive transport layer in order to fulfill Quality of Service and Service Level Agreements in volatile service based environments. This thesis contains a state-of-the-art, the description of FMC-QE as well as extensions of FMC-QE in representative general models and case studies. In the state-of-the-art part of the thesis in chapter 2, an overview on existing Queueing Theory and Time Augmented Petri Net models and other quantitative modeling and evaluation languages and methodologies is given. Also other hierarchical quantitative modeling frameworks will be considered. The description of FMC-QE in chapter 3 consists of a summary of the foundations of FMC-QE, basic definitions, the graphical notations, the FMC-QE Calculus and the modeling of open queueing networks as an introductory example. The extensions of FMC-QE in chapter 4 consist of the integration of the summation method in order to support the handling of closed networks and the modeling of multiclass and semaphore scenarios. Furthermore, FMC-QE is compared to other performance modeling and evaluation approaches. In the case study part in chapter 5, proof-of-concept examples, like the modeling of a service based search portal, a service based SAP NetWeaver application and the Axis2 Web service framework will be provided. Finally, conclusions are given by a summary of contributions and an outlook on future work in chapter 6. [1] Werner Zorn. FMC-QE - A New Approach in Quantitative Modeling. Abstract:
In the field of software engineering, software architecture plays an important role particularly in areas of critical and large-scale software system development and over the years it has evolved as an important sub-discipline within the field of software engineering. However, software architecture is still an emerging discipline mainly attributed by the lack of standardized way for architectural representation and also due to lack of analysis methods that can determine if the intended architecture translates into correct implementation during the software development [HNS00]. Architecture compliance checking [KP07] is a technique used to resolve latter part of the problem and Fraunhofer SAVE (Software Architecture Visualization and Evaluation) is a compliance-checking tool that uses fact extraction. This master’s thesis provides fact extraction support to Fraunhofer SAVE for a system developed using Ruby on Rail framework by developing a fact extractor. The fact extractor was developed as an eclipse plug-in in Java that was integrated with SAVE platform, it consists of a parser that parses Ruby source code and then generates an abstract syntax tree. The architectural facts are extracted by analyzing these abstract syntax trees using a visitor pattern from which architecture of the system are generated. It is represented using the internal model of the SAVE platform. The fact extractor was validated using two reference systems of differing sizes developed using Ruby on Rails framework. A reference system with smaller size, which contains all the relevant Ruby language constructs, was used to evaluate correctness and completeness of the fact extractor. The evaluation result showed the correctness value of 1.0 or 100% and completeness value of 1.0 or 100%. Afterwards, a larger application with more complex architecture was used to validate the performance and robustness of the fact extractor. It has successfully extracted, analyzed and build the SAVE model of this large system by taking 0.05 seconds per component without crashing. Based these computations, it was concluded that the performance of the fact extractor was acceptable as it performed better than C# fact extractor.

Abstract:
Irradiation induced void swelling is problematic for the application of austenitic steels under high dose irradiation. In this thesis, the swelling is characterized by dislocation bias. The dislocation bias is obtained using the finite element method, accounting for fcc copper and nickel under electron irradiation. The methodology is implemented with the interaction energies between an edge dislocation and point defects. Analytically derived interaction energies, which are based on elasticity theory, are compared with interaction energies obtained from atomistic model using semi-empirical atomic potentials as physics basis. The comparison shows that the description of analytical interaction energies is inaccurate in the dislocation core regions. The bias factor dependence on dislocation density and temperature is presented and discussed. At high temperatures or low dislocation densities, the two approaches tend to converge. However, the dislocation bias based on the interaction energies from the two approaches, reveals larger discrepancy for nickel than for copper. The impact on dislocation bias from the different stacking fault energies of copper and nickel is elaborated. Nickel, which has a larger stacking fault energy, is predicted to have larger swelling rate than copper under the same irradiation conditions.

Abstract:
ITC/USA 2012 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Eighth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2012 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California
This paper contains a description of two types of forward error correction (FEC) codes for shaped offset quadrature phase shift keying, telemetry group version (SOQPSK-TG). The FEC codes are a low-density parity check (LDPC) code and a serially concatenated convolutional code (SCCC). The contributions of this paper are on the system-design level. One major contribution is to design a SCCC code word format that is as compatible as possible with the LDPC code word, which simplifies other aspects of the system design. Another major contribution is to show exactly how demodulators and decoders can be decoupled from each other at the receiver. This simplifies the demodulation process because receiver synchronization is no longer intertwined with FEC decoding. Furthermore, this enables a mix-and-match design, where demods can be chosen based on their performance and complexity tradeoffs. In fact, for the first time, we show how symbol-by-symbol demods can be used with all FEC coding/decoding options, and we also show that these demods have very attractive BER performance given their simplicity.

Abstract:
The presented project explores the current theoretical and experimental tools available within the study group for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) with focus on the electron-positron collider. The aim of the study is to evaluate the current frameworks used for simulation, and investigate the possibility of simulating long-lived particles, that could be dark matter candidates, through them. Pythia cards were run through the framework of Delphes and several different software packages were studied on the journey through the work. It was found that the current framework reconstructs the masses of a Z bosons and Higgs bosons accurately from the ZH signal, which is central for the analysis at the FCC-ee. When the same analysis was applied for the new physics case of a dark matter particle included in the new card for study, a ROOT file was produced indicating that the framework was able to handle the new case. When this card was run through the analysis software however, difficulties arose and a final output could not be achieved. Conclusively, it can be said that the current framework has the possibilities of handling new physics cases but further study is required to be able to run certain software packages on these cases.

The FcγRIIA, receptor for the Fc portion of IgG, expressed by macrophages, neutrophils, platelets and dendritic cells, bind to the subclasses of IgG with variable affinity, that can be influenced by the polymorphism in the gene that encodes this receptor. The substitution of the amino acid arginine (R) for histidine (H), in the 131 position, defines three allelic patterns, the homozygote H/H, R/R and the heterozygote H/R, conferring to the FcγRIIA H/H131 a greater affinity to the IgG2 and IgG3 subclasses. This can result in different responses to diverse pathogens. Studies show the importance of Fcγ receptors on the macrophage infection by amastigote forms of Leishmania sp, in addition to those for the complement (CR3) and for mannose (MR). Besides that, genetic factors related to the hosts are involved in the immune response to the leishmaniasis, among them, the FcγRs. Until this time, we haven t found studies relating the receptor FcγRIIA to the leishmaniasis in humans. This way, this work consists in analyzing the allelic polymorphism in the gene that encodes the FcRIIA in individuals with American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL), evaluate if this polymorphism would be a genetic fact of susceptibility or resistance for this disease, if this would be influencing in the development of the different clinical forms of the ATL, as well in the healing process of the lesions. The FcγRIIA H/R131 polymorphism was analyzed in 88 blood samples of individuals with leishmaniasis and in 98 samples of healthy individuals (control group), using PCR, amplifying a segment of the gene that encodes the FcRIIA, followed by allele-specific enzymatic digestion and agarose gel eletrophoresis 3%. These results showed that the genotypic and allelic distribution of the FcγRIIA H/R131 were similar in the patients with leishmaniasis and in the control group, as well in patients with different clinical forms of the ATL. Concerning the resolution time of the disease, among the patients that had their lesions healed within one month of treatment or after this period, there was a predominance of the alleles R and H, respectively, however these differences were not significant. This way, our study suggests that the allelic polymorphism of the FcγRIIA H/R131 possibly is not a genetic factor of host that is associated to the protection or pathogenesis in the American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis.

Abstract:
Frc, a major gene on chromosome 8, conditions fructan levels in onions (Allium cepa L). In order to assist genetic dissection of this locus, this study aimed to determine the factors influencing varying fructan levels in high- and low-fructan genotypes. Mapping families were developed and analysed to study the genetic architecture for the fructan trait, and to check the association of the identified variables with the Frc locus. To facilitate reliable and practicable sugar assays in onions, a newly-adapted high-throughput microplate enzymatic assay was validated in this study. The reliability of using leaf sugars as a representative of bulb sugars in a mapping population was studied. Microplate enzymatic sugar assays were carried out on a segregating onion cross to validate the use of maltases in sugar analysis, and the results obtained were validated against HPLC-PAD. Sucrose measured in microplates employing maltases as the hydrolytic enzyme was in agreement with HPLC-PAD results. Maltase enzymes specifically hydrolysed sucrose in onions, providing an alternate tool in place of expensive sugar assay kits. Use of the microplate-enzymatic assay provided a rapid, cheap and practicable method for sugar analysis in onion. Differences in carbohydrate content, sucrose metabolising enzyme activities and their expression levels were monitored in developing leaf blades and leaf bases of four high- and four low-fructan genotypes. The variation in fructan accumulation between high- and low-fructan genotypes was due to the variation in sucrose metabolism. SPS expression and activity did not vary between high- and low-fructan genotypes. Acid invertase and 1-SST showed significant variation in their activities between the two fructan groups. Post-transcriptional and translational regulation of AI and 1-SST respectively, are suggested. Mapping populations analysed for non-structural carbohydrates showed very wide segregation for fructan (80 to 600 g kg⁻¹) and other NSC content, and were well-suited for detailed genetic and physiological analysis. Single marker analysis was carried out to study the association between the combined enzyme activity (CEA; acid invertase + 1-SST) and the Frc markers. Significant association between CEA and Frc markers has suggested genes regulating acid invertases or 1-SST or both underlie Frc. Leaf blade NSC did not correlate with bulb sugars and thus cannot be used as a phenotypic marker for early selection of bulb NSC traits.

Abstract:
Concrete technology has changed greatly in the past decades. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is an example of the development in this field. It is obtained by adding fibres that act as a reinforcement of the cement matrix, improving the tenacity, cracking control and durability of the concrete members. In certain applications, SFRC has become an alternative material to concrete reinforced with conventional steel rebar. Despite of numerous advantages of SFRC, problems and uncertainties still exist regarding the design, the characterization and the performance of this material. Furthermore, the structural design and the properties of SFRC in real-scale elements as well as the fibre distribution are not properly clarified. All these issues need to be addressed in order to promote the safe and efficient use of the material. The objective of this doctoral thesis is to develop a systematic and innovative approach for the design optimization and characterisation of FRC precast segment. In total, 4 subjects are covered: a critical study related to the design of FRC precast segment considering the ductility requirements of the Model Code 2010; the experimental and analytical study of concrete blocks subjected to concentrated loads; the design procedure and experimental research on FRC precast segment for shafts and the anisotropy of the FRC precast segment. The first subject presents an analysis of the technical requirements demanded by the Model Code 2010 when steel fibres are the only reinforcement for concrete elements. According to this revision, an alternative approach according to the Model Code 2010 which is more compatible with the requirements of the application in tunnels is proposed. This approach may lead to the reduction of the fibre content required to guarantee a minimum ductility of the element. In order to evaluate the repercussion of the ductility criteria in terms of fibre consumption, a case study of Metro L9 of Barcelona is presented. The second subject contributes to the understanding about the behaviour of concrete blocks subjected to concentrated load. An experimental programme is performed to evaluate the influence of the height-to-length ratios in the mechanical response of the blocks. Based on the observations derived, a strut-and-tie model is adopted to assess the value of the loads Fcr and Fmax for short blocks and long blocks. A case study of Metro Line 9 in Barcelona is conducted, and the results of the study indicates that with an appropriate safety factors for the SLS and the ULS, no traditional reinforcement is required to resist the tensile stresses due to the concentrated loads applied by the jacks of the tunnel boring machine. The third subject is to verify that it is viable to replace the traditional reinforcement with steel fibres in the segmental lining ring of shaft constructed with vertical shaft machine. An analytical formulation based on MC 2010 is proposed to evaluate the minimum requirements the FRC must fulfil to carry out this replacement. Likewise, an experimental campaign was performed to characterize the mechanical behaviour of both conventional and self-compacting concrete reinforced with fibre content (Cf) between 30 and 60 kg/m3. Posteriorly, another full-scale experimental campaign of bending test on segments is performed to verify the ductile behaviour of two types of segments under failure scenario. These results are used to validate the proposed formula. The last subject focuses on the study of the anisotropy in terms of fibre distribution and local mechanical response of segments with conventional and self-compacting SFRC. For that, a large number of cores extracted from real-scale segments are tested for the fibre distribution with the inductive method and, then, for the mechanical response with the Barcelona test. A conceptual model for the fibre orientation is proposed based on the average values obtained from the tests.

Abstract:
In video streaming it is important that the video stream reaches the users in time, and without errors. To retransmit lost packets in a largescale multimedia video transmission is often unfeasible because of the retransmission delay. Because of that errors require either costly retransmissions or causes a downgrade of performance for the receiving user, an important goal is to minimize the number of errors that occurs when transmitting data during video streaming through a wireless channel. In this paper an adaptation-algorithm is proposed, which adapts itself in such away that the receivers of e.g. the broadcast will receive enough packets in order to be able to FEC-decode the received data in low- as well as high loss-scenarios. The algorithm adapts itself by changing the rate of FEC-encoded redundant packets based on the current packet-loss-rate of the channel, with the aim of optimizing the bandwidth-usage and providing the receiver with playable data meeting deadlines. It adds an additional self-adaptive amount of FEC-encoded redundant packets for each FEC-encoded-session in order to guarantee the ability of the receiver to FEC-decode the data and play the media, even under the conditions in which the inteference-level of the channel increases during the transmission of each such session. Simulations demonstrate that in a wireless channel with a packet loss rate of 10%, using 1000 source packets per FEC-encoded unit, 12.6% redundant packets are required in order to ensure a FEC-decoding-failure probability < 1/1000 .

Abstract:
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), a new and modern concept of emerging technologies with focus on providing cutting edge high-resolution television, broadcast, and other fascinating services, is now easily available with only requirement of high-speed internet. Everytime a new technology is made local, it faces tremendous problems whether from technological point of view to enhance the performance or when it comes down to satisfy the customers. This cutting edge technology has provided researchers to embark and play with different tools to provide better quality while focusing on existing tools. Our target in dissertation is to provide a few interesting facets of IPTV and come up with a concept of introducing an imaginary cache that can re-collect the packets travelling from streaming server to the end user. In the access node this cache would be fixed and then on the basis of certain pre-assumed research work we can conclude how quick retransmission can take place when the end user responds back using RTCP protocol and asks for the retransmission of corrupted/lost packets. In the last section, we plot our scenario of streaming server on one side and client, end user on the other end and make assumption on the basis of throughput, response time and traffic.

Abstract:
In a recent judgment by the Free State Provincial Division of the High Court of South Africa it was decided that a trustee who resigns is only relieved from his duties when his name is removed from the letter of authority by the Master of the High Court. This judgment has caused many questions to be raised regarding the implications of the resignation by a trustee. This judgment and the current legal position of the resigning trustee are investigated in this dissertation. The legal position of the resigning trustee seems to be uncertain, and the mentioned judgment should not be unreservedly accepted as correct. The role and responsibility of the Master of the High Court in this process is considered, as well as the legal position of the resigning trustee, the remaining trustees and third parties contracting with the trust. Certain conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made regarding this aspect of South African trust law.

Abstract:
Different groups in the forestry sector were likely to have different views regarding the responsibility for an environmentally sustainable forestry and the benefits of certification and this study aimed to examine the attitudes that existed in the forestry sector to the certification schemes FSC and PEFC. In the study a survey and a questionnaire were sent out to different groups. The investigation was made with respect to three groups: forest owners, forest contractors and employees working with the certification schemes on a daily basis at the forest company Södra. The groups agreed that the owner of the forest had the main responsibility for an environmentally sustainable forestry. The study revealed that all three groups highly valued the environmental aspect of certification. Forest owners also identified financial gain as a benefit. The forest contractors felt that the certification gave orderliness to their work but also saw an economic cost from being certified. The forest company employees found certification as an access to a widermarket with certified products. Half of the forest owners estimated their knowledge of the certification schemes to be inadequate while forest contractors and the employees of Södra valued their knowledge as sufficient. The forest owners had less education about the certification schemes than the other groups.

Abstract:
Polyethylene is one of the most widely used synthetic materials produced by mankind and its accumulation in the biosphere is exceeding at an alarming rate. There are several methods to recycle or remediate the waste polyethene apart from land filling and generation of useful products from the waste is on demand for research and development. Ionic liquids are aggressively replacing several organic compounds due to their robust nature and also have novel properties that allow depolymerization of synthetic materials into simpler short chained paraffins. Initial dissolution of polymer using hot toluene followed by agitated depolymerization using EMIM-Cl (AlCl3) ionic liquid for producing fuel grade high calorie organic molecules might be proven successful. This method uses proton sources like sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or waters that aid saturation of organic compounds by hydrogen ion exchange. This could be a novel procedure that aims to produce fuel grade products from waste synthetic polymers like polyethene.
