Full textBackground Women's healthcare in Sweden today has great potential of improvement, as there is, among other things, no guidelines for treatment and follow-up of injuries to the pelvic floor muscles. These injuries can affect the quality of life. Physiotherapists can assist with the rehabilitation of these conditions. Purpose The purpose was to investigate physiotherapists experiences of physiotherapy after childbirth. Design and method A qualitative, explorative and descriptive design was used and was based on semi structured interviews. Five physiotherapists were interviewed and the material was processed using qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim et al. Results Five categories emerged during the data analysis, with a total of 14 subcategories. The categories were culture and approach, the patient meeting, the patient, positive aspects of the profession and progress. What was described was, among other things, the desire for physiotherapists to become a bigger part of maternity care, the prioritization of women’s health care, the lack of guidelines, the patient often having problems despite previous follow- up in the maternity care and the joy of the profession. Conclusion Physiotherapists experience that they have an important role in rehabilitation after maternal injuries and wish to have a greater role in rehabilitation in maternity care. Women’s health care is not percieved as a high priority in physioterapeutic primary education. The informants perceive a need for Swedish guidelines for rehabilitation after gynecological surgery and cesarean sections. Physiotherapists, however, find that the work is fun and that they have grateful patients they can make a big difference to. Further research on physical therapy after child birth is considered necessary. Key words Physiotherapy, experiences, women’s health, post partum care.

Full textBackground: Physiotherapists in pediatrics aims to prevent, maintain and develop the infant based on assessed conditions. Physiotherapists require a broad knowledge of motor development and an ability to interact with the infant and parents. A behavioral medical perspective on physiotherapy includes initiation, implementation and maintenance of behavior. The treatment can be seen within the Social Cognitive Theory, which explains an interaction between the individual, environment and behavior. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate physiotherapist’s experiences of factors that influence the treatment of motor impairment in infants. Method: A semi-structured interview guide was used for interviews with six physiotherapists from pediatric care. A qualitative content analysis was used. Results: 19 subcategories were divided into five categories. The physiotherapist's cooperation and communication with parents, training as part of the daily life, deficiencies in the child's network, personalization of training and resources in the physiotherapist's work environment. Conclusions: Pediatric physiotherapy is a complex area where many factors affect the treatment. Good cooperation with the infant's parents and broad skills are some of the most important components. The complexity is reflected in the interaction between individual, environmental and behavioral factors from Social Cognitive Theory. Keywords: Behavior medicine, Infant, Motor deviation, Treatment

Full textBackground: Digital healthcare consultations is something used more and more, especially during COVID-19 but also in accordance with various goals for digitization. Video consultations has proven to work well as an alternative to regular visits and telephone calls, but there is no clear view on how physiotherapists experience digital meetings. Objective: To investigate physiotherapists' experiences of digital care meetings compared to traditional physiotherapist visits in primary care. Method: The study has a qualitative design. Data was collected through 5 semi-structured interviews with physiotherapists and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Result: The analysis of the interviews resulted in 6 categories and 15 subcategories. The categories were; Digital meetings can make it easier for the patient and the physiotherapist, The physiotherapists' work is developed and adapted during the pandemic, Challenging to get good digital meetings, Opportunities with digital meetings, Limitations with digital meetings and Potential for improvement. Conclusion: Digital care meetings in physiotherapy could be an alternative when patients want it and for visits including conversation, observation, advice, training and follow-up, and where there is no need for a more thorough manual examination. Digital meetings can make it easier for both the patient and the physiotherapist, but further development of technology and accessibility is needed to improve the work with the patient.

Full textBackground: Palliative care aims to take in consideration the patients physical, psychological, social and existential needs. Physical therapy could improve the quality of life for patients in palliative care, however there is a lack of knowledge among patients, as well as among other health care professions, about what a physical therapist has to offer in palliative care. Purpose: To study physical therapists experiences from working in palliative care. Method: The study is a qualitative and explorative interview study with an inductive approach. Seven informants were recruited for the study and interviewed using a semi structured interview guide. Data from the interviews were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The interview analysis resulted in four main categories with 15 subcategories. The categories describe the patient meetings, the approach towards patients and the own profession, individualization of treatment as well as patient meeting and the experiences of physical therapy interventions. Conclusions: The informants described a palliative care where physical therapy interventions spread over a wider area than strict physical treatment. The informants described the importance of individualized care where the patient is in focus. The study also brought light upon the importance of building a relationship with the patient based on security and openness.

Full textBackground: Football generates a large proportion of injuries and female football players are generally at higher risk of suffering certain injuries and have a different injury pattern than male players. Existing injury prevention programs have shown a reduced incidence of injuries. However, fewer studies have been done on female than male football players and studies regarding physiotherapist’s view of injury prevention in women’s teams are lacking. Purpose: The aim was to investigate the physiotherapist’s thoughts about, experiences of and role in injury prevention training in Swedish women’s football teams at the elite level. Method: A qualitative method with descriptive design was applied. The data collection was conducted with five semi-structured interviews and processed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The results showed that the physiotherapist’s believed that the causes of injuries are often due to shortage of staff, high total load and players well-being and life situation. The physiotherapist’s areas of responsibility include decisions, individual assessments, communication with those involved in the injury prevention work and designing the injury prevention training. Important factors that affect the injury prevention work are highlighted as the players own responsibility and financial resources in the team. The injury prevention work in women’s football teams can be developed through research, more resources and a changed way of working regarding injury prevention training. Conclusion: Causes of injuries, the physiotherapist’s areas of responsibility, interventions and limiting factors should be taken into account regarding injury prevention work in women’s football clubs. Furthermore, these factors need to be developed and given higher priority in the clubs in order to optimize the injury prevention work. More research is also needed regarding the subject to cover all the areas and to strengthen the physiotherapist’s role in injury prevention work.

Full textIntroduction: The relationship between motor development, physical activity and academic achievement is well documented. Processes for developing the implementation of physical activity in schools have begun through physiotherapy, among other areas, as part of school based healthcare. This is a relatively new area of focus within the profession. For physiotherapists, this involves establishing a new professional role and developing interprofessional working relationships. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate school physiotherapists experiences of their role and teamwork within school based healthcare. Method: Three semi-structured interviews were conducted via zoom or telephone with school physiotherapists working within student healthcare. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and the data analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: Three categories were identified: To cooperate and be “the person at the heart of things”, To develop and to have a new professional role in school, and To relate to a shared focus of health versus academic achievement in school. These categories were further specified into subcategories. The subjects felt they played an important role in the school by providing a complementary, physiotherapeutic perspective on health. However, the schools focus on performance was perceived to be a challenge when implementing their views on health. The subjects were able to form the role themselves to a large extent which was deemed a challenge and an opportunity. Conclusions: Physiotherapists contribute a complementary perspective on health within schools. An increased involvement from governing bodies is required to overcome challenges and for development in the field.

Full textBackground: In Sweden approximately 200.000 women have been diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometrial-like tissue is growing outside the uterus. The development of endometriosis could be multifactorial, caused by retrograde menstruation combined with hormonal factors, heredity and a weakened local immune system. Common symptoms are different variations of pain, infertility and decreased quality of life. The purpose of the treatment is to ensure a good level of functioning with manageable symptoms. Physical therapy is highly recommended when treating endometriosis. Purpose: To investigate the experiences of physical therapy treatment in endometriosis according to patients and physiotherapists. Method: Six semi-structured interviews were conducted, of which three were including patients with endometriosis and three were including physiotherapists. The data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in four main categories: “Adaptation based on the individual patient”, “Purpose and effect of the treatment”, “Emotional experiences and factors that contribute to power and hope” and “The role of the physiotherapist”. The physical therapy was perceived as focusing on the patient´s needs. It was unanimously agreed that the treatment reduced symptoms and could engender delight mingled with terror, but also hope. The physical therapy treatment was found to provide safety and assistance. Conclusion: Physical therapy in endometriosis can be experienced as valuable for reducing pain and muscle tension and for providing coping strategies in everyday life. The physiotherapist was found to be able to make the patients feel heard, seen and helped.
Hållén, Isabelle, and Fia Jansson. "Upplevelse av stress i arbetslivet hos fysioterapeuter inom primärvård : En kvalitativ intervjustudie." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Fysioterapi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-337723.

Full textBakground: Hamstring injury is the most common injury in elite football and has a high re- injury rate. The rehabilitation of hamstring injuries are intense since the player should preferably be back quickly to contribute to the team performance. Despite the intensity of the rehabilitation, it needs to be of a long-term perspective and prevent future re-injury. Aim: To explore physiotherapists’ experiences of factors that affect rehabilitation of hamstring injuries in male football players in Swedish elite football clubs. Method: Qualitative semistructured interview study with descriptive design. A purposive sample of five physiotherapists, working with Swedish elite football were interviewed. The data collection was analyzed with qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Result: The analysis resulted in five categories and 19 subcategories. The categories were the physiotherapist’s conditions, the player’s condition, external pressure, approach with the player and the circumstances of the return to play. The physiotherapists’ experienced that the player, the coach and the knowledge of the physiotherapist are the most important factors in rehabilitation of hamstring injuries. Conclusion: Physiotherapists experienced that adaptation of their behavior was required according to the circumstances of the surrounding environment to achieve successfull rehabilitation. The study’s result is difficult to generalize as the number of physiotherapists involved in the study was few.

Full textBackground: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders following a traumatic event. Many of those who have been diagnosed with PTSD have bodily symptoms and research suggests that physiotherapeutic interventions may be meaningful in the treatment of PTSD. Even though research regarding physiotherapy and PTSD has grown over the last couple of years physiotherapists are not a natural part of the PTSD-team. A qualitative study regarding physiotherapists views on their role in the treatment of PTSD could provide valuable information. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe physiotherapists' views and experiences of working with adults who have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. Method: The study was a qualitative interview study which was based upon five semi-structured interviews with physiotherapists from the Red Cross treatment centers in Sweden. A purposive sampling was used and the data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in 14 subcategories and four categories. The four categories were; A varied and personalized physiotherapeutic way of working with PTSD, The physiotherapists importance and unique role in the PTSD-team, Variating successful factors in the healthcare of PTSD and Challenges that complicates the healthcare of PTSD. Conclusion: Physiotherapists have, because of their unique competence, an important role in the PTSD-team and can make a big difference for their patients through physiotherapeutic interventions. There are many challenges in the healthcare of PTSD for physiotherapists and more research and education was requested. Further research regarding physiotherapy and PTSD is needed.

Full textBackground The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies intimate partner violence as a global health problem. Even if both men and women are affected, data from National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence against Women (NCK) shows that almost three times more women than men have been affected. The Swedish health care needs to improve on how they work on finding these patients but there is little research of how physiotherapists work regarding this matter. Objective To explore how physiotherapists investigate and examine female patients who are or have been a victim of intimate partner violence. Methods This survey used a qualitative method with a semi structured interview guide. Six interviews were carried through with physiotherapists who worked in Uppsala’s primary care, either in public or private health centers. Results The survey showed various experiences within the partakers. None of the physiotherapists asked about intimate partner violence as a standardized question at all new visits. On the contrary, several informants expressed that they felt a need to create a relationship with the patients before asking such questions. The physiotherapist took different actions when detecting intimate partner violence; mainly referring the patients to a curator and/or giving information of the women’s peace line. All partakers felt the need of a deeper knowledge and understanding of this issue. Conclusion Physiotherapists need more awareness as well as practical and theoretical knowledge to be able to work more efficiently with women that are affected by intimate partner violence.

Full textBackground: Patients with mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorder are found in primary care. Physiotherapists are often the first contact and physical activity is an important part of the treatment. Working with maintenance of physical activity is important as this patient group often struggle to maintain this. Objective: Explore the experiences of physiotherapists in primary care who worked with maintaining physical activity in the rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders. Method: Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed by content analysis. Results: 8 categories and 21 subcategories appeared. The categories were: "Building alliance early", "Strategies for individualization", "Utilizing patients own resources", "Promoting advances", "Forms of follow-up", "Obstacles", "Enhancing factors", and "Thoughts of change". In order to increase the chances of maintaining physical activity, constant balancing of the dose of physical activity, regular follow-up and highlighting patient progress were required. Primary care was found not to be optimal as longer treatment times were often needed. Conclusion: The result highlights important components of rehabilitation, to facilitate the maintenance of physical activity. Continued research is needed to find strategies in health care to address shortage of time. Further survey of how physiotherapists should work to get patients to maintain training behaviors is also needed. Full textBackground: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) after giving birth causes physical and mental discomfort. The injuries vary and the healthcare afterward is important for the mother´s rehabilitation. The competence of physiotherapists is suitable for the examination and treatment of PFD after giving birth. However, the profession is not established in this area. There are knowledge gaps about the physiotherapist's views and experiences of working with PFD after giving birth. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the physiotherapist's views and experiences of working in Swedish healthcare with women with PFD after giving birth. Method: The study was a semi-structured qualitative interview study that included five participants who work with PFD after giving birth. The participants were recruited via the competence map for women's health on Fysioterapeuternas' website and via the Facebook group “Fysioterapeuter inom kvinnors hälsa”. Samples of convenience was applied. Data processing of the interview material was done through a qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis process resulted in four categories: The physiotherapist's role when meeting patients, Emotional work, Successful factors in the healthcare of PFD after giving birth and Challenges in the healthcare of PFD after giving birth divided into eleven subcategories. Conclusion: Physiotherapists have a significant role and the competence to make a difference for patients with PFD after giving birth. They are driven by commitment and want to see a further development of women’s health as well as strengthen the physiotherapist's role in maternity care. Further research is needed to fill the knowledge gap of physiotherapists' work with PFD after giving birth.

Full textBackground: The High Intensity Functional Exercise (HIFE) program has been shown to have good effect on physical function and ADL in elderly people living in nursing homes and dependent on assistance with activities in daily living (ADL). However, there is limited knowledge regarding physiotherapists' experiences of using HIFE in nursing homes. This study can help to understand how physiotherapists can perform high-quality training with this population. Aim: To investigate physiotherapists' experiences of HIFE with elderly people living in nursing homes. Methods: To achieve the objective of this study a qualitative design was chosen and five physiotherapists that have worked according to HIFE in nursing homes in Sweden were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. The interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Based on the collated data, four categories were identified with a total of 17 subcategories: Successful implementation requires the commitment of many, Important to actively choose participants, Push the participants close to their limits and Effects of the training seen on many levels. Conclusion: All physiotherapists expressed a great need for HIFE in nursing homes. HIFE was considered suitable for many of the residents and made it possible to challenge the participants to a high intensity and thus saw a greater effect. In order to succeed, commitment is required from a number of people before, during and after the training period.

Full textBackground: In primary care, it is common to apply home-based exercise programs as treatment. Several studies have investigated facilitating factors that affect adherence to home-based exercise. Since the physiotherapist program at Uppsala University in autumn 2014 developed the syllabus into a more biopsychosocial-oriented learning, no research can be found on how the physiotherapists with the new syllabus experience can facilitate the patient's adherence. Purpose: Examine how newly graduated physiotherapists, who began their education at Uppsala University in the autumn 2014 or later, experience that they can facilitate adherence with home-based exercise programs for patients in primary care. Method: Qualitative descriptive design. Data was collected through five semi-structured interviews with five newly graduated physiotherapists and was conducted with a qualitative content analysis. Results: The data resulted in seven categories and 19 subcategories. The seven categories consisted of "Personalizing training arrangements and follow-up", "Increasing the patient’s understanding of home-based exercise", "Applying social support in home-based exercise", "Chart and incite motivation for home-based exercise", "Explore patient behavior and well-being", "Establish good patient contact" and "Workplace assets". Conclusion: The result presented many strategies that already have been explored. All categories except "Workplace assets" reflected a behavioral medicine perspective. This perspective might be of value for future physiotherapists to facilitate adherence with home-based exercise programs in primary care.

Full textBackground: Working to improve the care of women after childbirth can contribute to reduced disability and absence from work, which is important not only for the individual but also for the society. There are no established routines or guidelines for physical therapist postpartum follow-up, which could result in that care is not offered on equal terms. In the literature the clinical experience of physical therapists working with women's health postpartum is not yet described. Aim: Describe physical therapists experiences of working in primary health care with postpartum care. Method: Qualitative interview study with inductive approach. Ten physical therapists educated in women's health working in primary care were interviewed with semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed. The material has been analyzed with latent qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman. Results: The analysis resulted in a theme; Towards the same conditions. The theme was formed by the three categories Body in focus, Give attention and Need for change. Physical therapists in women's health say that they can and want to help women after childbirth, but there is a lack of knowledge about their competence in their own profession as well as among other professions. Women with needs might not obtain physical therapy care because of thus knowledge gap. Conclusion: In this study interprofessional collaborations and a routine appointment to a physical therapist is described as factors that has potential to improve the postpartum care.

Full textBackground Eating disorders are psychiatric conditions that contribute to problems such as impaired body perception and increased muscular tension. The patients also run an increased risk of executing an unhealthy exercise behaviour. Physiotherapeutic treatment aims to help these patients regain a realistic self-image and a positive perception of the body. Purpose To explore what experiences physiotherapists in Sweden had regarding their work and what they could contribute within the treatment of eating disorders, as well as to find what factors they judge were important for compliance within physiotherapeutic treatment. Design and method A qualitative design was used in this study. Six physiotherapists with at least six months experience working with eating disorders in specialist care were selected to participate. A qualitative content analysis was used according to Graneheim and Lundman's inductive strategy. Results The work as a physiotherapist in eating disorder care was described as important and challenging. Experiences about physiotherapeutic expertise, patient-centered work, insufficient guidelines and treatment methods were mentioned. The facilitating factors for compliance with the physiotherapeutic treatment were fewer than the aggravating factors and included social support and patience from the healthcare provider. Aggravating factors were above all a longterm illness and exercise stops. Conclusion Physiotherapists can contribute with their knowledge of the body, physical activity and exercise in the treatment of eating disorders. Patience from the healthcare provider, social support, longterm illness, and exercise stops are some of the factors that, according to this study, will influence compliance with the physiotherapeutic treatment.
