Full textThe intention of this essay has been to study with a qualitative method how people with physical disabilities emerged experience their sports activities. This in relation to their quality of life, participation and how obstacles or possibilites in their sports activities can be experienced. By interviewing people with physical disabilities who practice sports, it find out that factors such as friendship, family and social exchange are important for this group of people. Significant concepts such as introspection, participation and quality of life have emerged from the collected literature and from the interviewers’ answers. Through the theories KASAM-sense of context and quality of life together with the previous research, these have been a guide for the results of this study.

Full textAbstractThe aim of this study was to create knowledge about how it is to be a parent with physical disability in society when there are such norms and expectations how to be a parent. The aim was also to lift the possibilities and obstacles that parents with physical disabilities experience about their parenthood. This study is based on a qualitative content analysis where I analyzed three interviews published within Swedish media, with inductive thematic analysis. The result showed that, due to society's expectations of parenting and the negative attitude of disability around the environment, people with physical disabilities may go through a long process until they can become parents. Once they become parents, they are questioned in their role as parent. Another result was that despite the negative effects of functional impairment on a parent, the parents suggested that their disability was an opportunity that enriched their children. Keywords: parenthood, physical disability, norms, opportunities and obstacles.

Full textBackground: A number of studies have stated that people with mental disabilities, due to the nature of their disorders, have difficulties to get started with physical activities. The atypical drugs that are commonly used in modern psychiatry tend to enhance symptoms of inactivity. People with mental disabilities have a higher degree of obesity and a higher mortality rate related to metabolic effects such as myocardial infarction, stroke and complications from diabetes. Along with the social handicaps that this provides an increasing interest for physical activity, as a way to decrease these symptoms and to improve quality of life, has occurred. Aim: To describe physical activity and its impact on people with mental disabilities. Method: Literary study using a mixed method approach. Result: Physical activity for people with mental disabilities has a positive influence on various levels, both physiological and psychological. Among the physiological gains there are condition improvement, weight loss and improvement of body functions. The main improvements that were shown in the result were the ones on psychological aspects, such as feelings of being involved, social gains and anti stressing effects. Surprising was that physical activity had such a noticeable effect on the caring environment and that in its turn gained the carer-patient relationship. This was described in a number of studies. Discussion: The four themes that are presented in the result, give a clear picture of what physical activity can mean to people with mental disabilities. This is consistent with what other scientific studies have shown. It was also shown in the result that the caring environment at the department became calmer and safer. This is something that was not that obvious in the literature that the author went through in the discussion part. The carer-patient relationship has been used as a theoretical framework and it has been recurring and so clear that it has its own headline in the result part. This is to great joy of the author, since he believes that one of the main keys for a person to find motivation is to start training and to create a vital change in life.

Full textThis study took place during the winter 2012 with the aim to find out how peoplewith physical disabilities experience and perceive the encounter with health carepersonnel and how it can be improved. People with disabilities are a large groupin health care and therefore it is essential to take their experiences seriously. Thedata was collected through narrative interviews with six people aged 18-54 yearsand the material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis according toGraneheim and Lundman (2004). The final categories were Positive experienceswith seven subcategories, Negative experiences with 13 subcategories andDesirable treatment with two subcategories, which in turn were divided into threesubcategories each. The results show that in order to make the patients encounterswith health care services feel positive, much more needs to be done. The biggest problem is that health professionals lack knowledge about what aphysical disability means and on their shortages to ensure the patients actualfunction. To make the encounters more positive it is required that healthprofessionals receive better education on the specific subject and see each patientas an individual with different needs and requirements.

Full textBackground Lower back pain is very common in the western world. It results in a great suffering for the person and large economic costs for the society. Today lower back pain is treated with information to stay active and medication for pain relief. There is a lack of knowledge with regards to what effect physical training has as prevention and treatment for acute and subacute lower back pain. Aim The aim of this study was to, among patients with acute and subacute non-specific lower back pain, describe their level of physical activity and evaluate differences between groups with different levels of activity. The aim was also to explore the association between pain intensity, disability and level of physical activity. Method The study was conducted as a survey. The participants was 15 patients, 6 men and 9 women with the mean age of 49,2 years old, who had sought care for acute and subacute lower back pain in 6 different primary care clinics. The level of physical activity were estimated using the indicator questions for physical activity by Socialstyrelsen, the pain intensity was measured with the Numeric Rating Scale and the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire was answered. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, differences were tested with Mann-Whitney U-test and correlations analyzed with Spearman correlations coefficient. Results Eight out of 15 participants reached the WHO recommendations of physical activity (> 150 min/week). Those who participated in physical training minimum 90 mins/week had a median value of NRS 5,5 and RMDQ 8. For those who trained less the median values were for NRS 7,5 (p=0,153) and RMDQ 11,5 (p=0,175). A week correlation between NRS (r=-0,136) and level of physical activity was noted while such correlation between RMDQ was negligible (r=-0,158). Conclusion There were no statically significant difference between the groups who trained at least 90 minutes per week and those who trained less neither in regards to pain intensity or disability. A weak but not statistically significant correlation was observed between physical activity and pain intensity.

The Swedish Parliament decided in 2000 on a national plan to improve the accessibility to people with disability. Environmental barriers should be removed prior to 2010.
Purpose. To investigate how accessibility to public environments is described in scientific articles and how it influences participation in social activities for persons with physical functional limitations.
Method. Review of scientific articles found in four different databases.
Results. Eleven scientific articles published 2002-2009 were studied and the result showed that accessibility to public environments is found to be of great importance for participation in social activities. For persons with physical functional limitations, level of disability, age and experience of environmental barrioers are utmost importance.
Conclusion. The result strengthen the necessity of following the national plan from 2000 and thereby increase the possibilities for persons with disability to live according to their own wishes and not be forced to accept environmental barriers.
Ståhl, Maria, and Hanna Nilsson.

Full textBackground: Survey shows that a person with disabilities, who have a sedentary leisure, are twice as likely of the risk of obesity than a person without a disability. It is common that people with disabilities are physically inactive and one reason may be the barriers that exist in our society that prevent participation in physical activity. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate which factors are important for physical activity among people with disabilities aged 13-25 years. Method: Literature study. Ten articles were analyzed and summarized based on the factors shown to affect the participation in physical activity. Five main themes were identified and the articles could be categorized. Results: The study demonstrated the need for increased opportunities for physical activity for youth and young adults with disabilities. A recurring theme is the variety of personal and environmental factors affecting adolescents and young adults for physical activity. Parents are an important part of their children's physical activity level. Conclusion: The physical activity level is affected by several factors at both the individual and environmental level. Scientists agree that the opportunity for physical activity is very limited for people with disabilities.

Full textAim The aim of the survey was to chart how endurance athletes with physical disabilities experience their opportunities to exercise sport compared to a group of conventional athletes within endurance sport. Method A quantitative survey with nine statements and an open question was applied. The sample consisted of 40 athletes with physical disability (mean age = 31.5, SD = 12.1) in the intervention group and 57 conventional athletes (mean age = 34.6, SD = 11.6) in the control group. Result The athletes with physical disabilities experienced significantly worse opportunities than conventional athletes regarding training group nearby (p = 0.002), sense of belonging (p = 0.001) and access to equipment (p = 0.009). The overall mean of the claims with likert scale in the survey was 3.76 (SD = 1.23) for athletes with physical disabilities and 3.97 (SD = 1.02) for conventional athletes. Conclusion Athletes with physical disabilities both experience the absence of a training group nearby and a lower sense of belonging may be possible, ie. the difficulty in getting a training company reduces sense of beloning. For future research, a qualitative survey with leaders in disability sports is required to increase understanding of the training environment and access to equipment.

Full textSummary Purpose: To compile what was described in scientific literature on assessment instruments that can be used by occupational therapists to assess the need for home modifications for adults with primarily physical disabilities. Method: Systematic literature search with four keywords in seven databases. To obtain additional information about the assessment instruments a manual search of article reference lists was carried out in order to answer the specific study questions of the study. Results: The authors found seven assessment instruments which assessed various aspects of the environment in relation to person and / or activity. None of the assessment instruments were designed to only assess the need for home modifications. The results proved the need for assessment instruments that contain both observation and self-assessment elements to obtain a complete picture of environmental accessibility and usability. Conclusion: Occupational therapists who assess the need for housing modification needs assessment instrument that measures both subjective and objective aspects of the home environment. Five of the assessment instruments contained either self-estimation or observation moments and when combined, the occupational therapist gets an complete picture. Two of the assessment instruments included both aspects.

Full textBackground: Individuals with disabilities are less physically active, report lower life conditions and a lower participation then the rest of the population. Physical activity on prescription (PAP) show a high degree of evidence and potential for development to improve the physical activity among people with disabilities. The amount of PAP within vulnerable groups needs to increase according to the National guidelines from the National board of Health & Welfare. Therefore more knowledge are needed about physiotherapist’s experiences of prescribing PAP to support behavior change for individuals with disabilities. Aim: The aim was to explore physiotherapist’s experiences of prescribing physical activity on prescription (PAP) for individuals with disabilities with the focus on behavior change towards increased physical activity. Method: A qualitative, semi structured interview study with descriptive design. An inductive, qualitative content analysis were used when analyzing the material. Result: The analysis resulted in twelve subcategories divided into four main categories: Reasons considered when prescribing and for behavior change, To create understanding among patients and their community about the prescription, To find a suitable activity and last To support behavior change. The physiotherapist’s within the study used these categories to depict their experiences. Conclusion: The physiotherapist’s experiences when prescribing physical activity on prescription for individuals with disabilities and to support their behavior change towards increased physical activity depicted a challenging and complex task. Environment-related factors such as economy and the availability of activities could hinder the prescription and patient’s behavior change despite preconditions created by the physiotherapist’s. This could hinder the task of supporting a marginalized group towards improvements in physical activity.

Full textPhysical education in Swedish primary schools is a subject that places demand on physical activity and movement. The student receives grades based on their performance in these physical activities. In this study, eight physical education teachers were interviewed to investigate how they experience the inclusion work so that all students, regardless of any physical disabilities or not, can participate in the sports lesson and what applications they would like to be able to implement this inclusion. It appears that physical education teachers experience challenges in designing an inclusive physical education so that all students can participate. The results of the study show a need for access to knowledge that can be of a significant nature for how physical education teachers work to include all students. It also shows that physical education teachers today work on the basis of a lesson design based on activity where everyone is expected to be able to participate based on certain physical preferences and that they are constantly faced with challenges in how to go about not having to expose individual students to become excluded. The conclusion shows that physical education today does not offer inclusion for all students and in cases where physical education teachers try to adapt the lesson, this can result in individual students still being excluded.

Full textBACKGROUND Schools have a need for renovation and the number of students is increasing, which requires more school buildings. Therefore, there is an interest to see how classrooms for Home and Consumer Studies are structured to help students with different needs. Today's teaching aims to include all students, therefore the classrooms need to be designed to meet the students' abilities and difficulties. By adapting the physical learning environment, the schools create a more inclusive environment and enable all students' rights to receive education. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to examine the physical learning environment in classrooms for Home and Consumer Studies, with a focus on accessibility adaptation. METHOD A qualitative research approach was chosen for the study together with two collection methods. A digital questionnaire with open-answer questions, and images from the classrooms where the teaching of Home and Consumer Studies were conducted. The reason for choosing two collection methods was to gain a broader perspective, as the teacher's own reflections could be analyzed together with the actual layout of the classroom. The method of analysis was a thematic analysis based on inductive strategy. RESULTS Teaching was conducted in appropriate classrooms but there were some limitations. For example, lack of space, lack of utensils and relatively old and worn kitchen units. To promote the physical learning environment, there were pictures for utensils in drawers, cabinets and on the walls, less content in kitchen units and rearranging of the tables. CONCLUSION The majority of the problems that emerged was because of the construction of the room. It is relatively difficult to adjust without doing a major renovation, which costs money. In summary, it is possible to see that the teachers try to get the classrooms as adapted as they can, but that the structure inhibits their ability to truly meet all students' different needs.

Full textWaiting occurs all the time, it could be everything from waiting for the bus, to get a doctors appointment or waiting för a decision to be made. Waiting can be associated with other related occasions like expectation and longing. A child´s waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve or the waiting and longing for the newborn baby after a pregnancy. When a family has a child with disabilities their whole life might change and more time and waiting occurs, and rarely the positive kind. These families can have up to eighty contacts with different authorities. In this study I have user qualitative interviews where parents have been able to speak openly about the wait and time that arise around the child´s special needs. The recurring theme by the parents was stress and a non functioning colloboration. Lots of time is being spent when acting project manager för your child, to bring different actors together in society when colloboration is not working. Consequences from extended processes around the child can in itself be a social alienation for the child, not to achieve the learning goals in school, deteriorated health and sick, stressed parents. Every individual moves all the time between the different systems in Bronfenbrenners the ecology human developement. We are also all dependent of them all to get our everday to function.

Full textTourism and leisure activities are an essential part of many people's lives, but for people with disabilities (PwD), their involvement can be highly conditional. The issue of active participation and the inclusion of PwD in all parts of society is increasingly being raised and the need for accessibility is growing. This study aims to investigate how tourism and activity companies in Jämtland County works to adapt and customize their activities to include individuals with physical disabilities. The study had a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews as the key focus for collecting empirical data. The result indicates that the majority of businesses do not currently offer activities that are specifically tailored to PwD, but for most of the companies these activities can be adjusted if there is a demand for it. Market demand controls the companies’ range of activities and a lack of demand from PwD for accessible activities has been identified. The conclusion describes that the absence of demand from PwD is the reason for the lack of accessible activities and that the companies specify resources such as knowledge and financial factors as challenging for the development of accessible activities.

Full textPeople with intellectual disabilities can have difficulty to understand and interpret health information, thus having an increased risk of lifestyle related diseases. The aim of this study was to describe how people with intellectual disabilities experienced the participation in a health education program regarding physical activity and nutrition. The study is based on a pilot project, Hälsan spelar roll. A qualitative study design model was used, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with nine participants and were analysed with content analysis. The study shows that the participants were satisfied with the program, and had increased their knowledge in health, nutrition, and exercise. During the program, they experienced an increase in physical activity levels and improved their nutritional habits. The participants exhibited a more positive outlook on life. They found it uplifting and motivating to participate in a group program, which encouraged them to change, while concurrently allowing the course leader to address their individual needs. Maintaining new habits, could prove challenging for the participants, if their healthy habits are not supported at home. The participants of the program also seemed to experience improvements in their daily habits through their participation in the health program. However, if support is lacking, the target group can have difficulties maintaining their new habits upon program completion.

Full textThe purpose of the study was to investigate what motivates individuals with physical disabilities to participate in parasport and how experienced barriers and resources can affect the motivation. Ten interviews with active athletes in parasport were conducted. All of them were men in the ages 24 to 73 (M= 45.2, SD=17.28) and had a physical disability. A semi structured interview guide based on SDT was applied (Ryan & Deci, 2002). The result showed that there were various factors that motivated the participants to participate in parasport. Most prominent of these factors were that parasport was fun, better physical, and psychological health and a sense of belonging to the surrounding. Furthermore, the result showed that the participants did experience barriers that could complicate for them to participate in parasport, for example long-way travels and expensive equipment costs. However, the participants had access to resources that contributed to their ability to participate in parasport. Both financial support and support from their environment were important. They also reported that an ability to access proper equipment and loan of equipment facilitated participation in parasport, which previous studies has not reported to be facilitating factors. The results of this study reports motivation factors for participation in parasport, experienced barriers and which resources that are of importance to facilitate parasport participation. Thus, association and organisations can use this knowledge to create strategies that can enable for more individuals to participate in parasport and make more to continue with parasport.

Full textAbout 15% of the population in the world have a disability, some of whom need support in their daily lives. To provide good support, insight into the individuals' experiences is needed. The purpose of the study is to describe the state of knowledge in existing research regarding experiences of living in a household where a person due to physical disability requires personal assistance, and how this can be understood based on person- and family centering. A literature review was conducted with a search in 2 scientific databases. 17 qualitative studies were identified. Thematic analysis was used in the processing of the material. 3 main themes and 8 sub-themes were developed. These themes involve roles and relationships, how assistance can contribute to a normal life and that assistance can become an obstacle. The results show that person- and family centering can increase satisfaction with the assistance.
