Closed sets play a fundamental role in topological spaces. Notably, a topology on a set can even be characterized by specifying the properties of its closed sets. In 1970, N. Levine introduced the concept of generalized closed sets, defined: A subset S of a topological space X is considered generalized closed if the closure of A is contained in U, cl(A)⊆U whenever A⊆U and U is open set. In this study, we define and explore novel classes of sets termed pre star generalized closed sets (P^* g-closed), pre star generalized open sets (P^* g-open) within the context of topological spaces. This chapter considers the Dehn–Lickorish theorem, which states that when g is greater than or equal to 0, the mapping class group Mod(Sɡ) is generated by finitely many Dehn twists about nonseparating simple closed curves. The theorem is proved by induction on genus, and the Birman exact sequence is introduced as the key step for the induction. The key to the inductive step is to prove that the complex of curves C(Sɡ) is connected when g is greater than or equal to 2. The simplicial complex C(Sɡ) is a useful combinatorial object that encodes intersection patterns of simple closed curves in Sɡ.

Abstract Polymer flooding projects require hundreds of ppm of polymer (often HPAM) to viscosify the injection water. It is well known that the required dose of HPAM to obtain a targeted viscosity will decrease by reducing the salinity of the inlet water. When the water salinity is low enough, desalination of water for reducing the required polymer concentration brings effective cost savings. In a scenario where the produced water has a salinity of 6 g/L, desalination of this water down to 1 g/L before polymer injection would reduce by half polymer consumption (from 1300 ppm down to 700 ppm).
