Abstract:
In a world with an ever increasing population, the demand for energy is constantly on the rise. Most countries also agree, that a sustainable development should be ensured. To accomplish this, a higher penetration of renewables in the present energy system is needed. Unlike traditional power production like thermal and hydro power plants, many of the renewable energy production units can not produce electricity at the desired frequency without power electronic devices. HVDC grids have also been suggested, as a mean to electrically connect geographically distant areas, to reduce the problem of local weather systems influencing the output of many renewable sources. It should thus be quite evident, that good models of power electronic devices are needed, to analyse the system's behaviour, and in particular its stability. In this report a black-box measurement based modelling technique will be investigated, with its biggest advantage being, that no a priori knowledge of the device under investigation is needed. The thesis starts off with an introduction to the relevant theory, and an introduction to the methodology. In the theory part a suggestion for a new equation set to calculate the model and a stability criterion for the model is presented. The new equation set for calculating the model is also proven to be equivalent with the old one. In the rest of the thesis the focus is on developing a test bench for obtaining the model. Following a step by step approach, starting with simulations on a VSI developed in Simulink, to get acquainted with the methodology. Before a test bench was developed for testing the methodology on dc-dc converters, ultimately leading to tests conducted on a physical VSI.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
M/A-COM has developed a chip set designed specifically for miniaturized ballistic telemetry applications. One key component of this chip set is a dual port voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). This device allows for independent optimization of both modulation and tuning parameters at the chip level. In the dual port architecture, the modulation port of the VCO may be tailored for the peak (frequency) deviation requirements of each system, while still permitting the device to tune over entire SLOWER band. Additionally, M/A-COM has developed S band power amplifiers (PAs) for medium power (500mW, 1W and 2W) telemetry applications. These new PAs are very efficient, (>45% PAE) when operated in saturation. This improved efficiency means these components may be integrated into transmitters with a miniaturized form factor. The excellent thermal performance of these new PAs allows them to be packaged in commercial plastic packages which are robust in high shock/high vibration applications. This paper reviews the design of each MMIC device and presents system performance data.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that Friedrich Nietzsche???s notion of world and self as ???will to power and nothing besides??? offers a highly productive interpretive lens or ???grid of intelligibility??? for understanding the ethical implications of Michel Foucault???s middle and late works on power and subjectivity. For if the late modern era is marked by a sustained and pervasive incredulity toward metanarrative, it is also the historical site for the reappearance and widespread acceptance of a very ancient metanarrative ??? the Heraclitean view of material reality as continual flux. Inasmuch as Nietzsche???s will to power philosophy is grounded in this Pre-Socratic worldview, his works and those of his devotee Foucault may serve as a productive foundation for a late modern ethics. The scholarly implications of reading Foucault???s middle and late works through the interpretive lens of Nietzschean will to power in its two key manifestations, domination and dynamism, are multiple. In addition to providing new insights into the value of Nietzschean-Foucauldian philosophy for advancing a late modern ethics, such an analysis also illuminates important continuities in Foucault???s theory of power and how his works simultaneously extend and critique Nietzschean views on the role of asceticism in culture. The thesis then turns to a more futuristic exploration of how Foucault???s final texts, feminist critiques and extensions of these texts, and works from the separate discipline of feminist moral theory may advance a feminist form of will to power ethics. Feminist reflection upon the dualistic philosophical basis of modern androcentric power invites further speculation upon the utility of the nondual philosophies of yoga, including those found in Ved??ntic texts like the Bhagavad G??t??, for such an endeavour. Because yoga utilises asceticism-based practices of the self as its primary means for moulding moral subjects, it is comparable to the Greco-Roman will to power ethics described in Foucault???s final works. On the other hand, yoga???s nondual telos may present certain ethical possibilities that dualistic constructs like the Greco-Roman model cannot. Indeed, by practicing nonduality through yoga, contemporary women and others may be engaging in a practice of freedom in the most essential sense.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California
M/A-COM, Inc. has previously developed a highly integrated transmitter chip set for wireless telemetry applications for the military L and S band frequencies and the commercial 2.4GHz ISM band. The original chip set is comprised of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), a silicon phase locked loop (PLL), and a family of power amplifiers (PA's). Using these components, M/A-COM has produced a miniature IRIG-compliant transmitter module, which has been flight-tested by the U.S. Army’s Hardened Subminiature Telemetry and Sensor System (HSTSS) program. Since the initial offering, several product enhancements have been added. The module performance has been improved by tailoring the VCO specifically for direct frequency modulation applications. In addition to improving noise performance, these enhancements have produced improved modulation linearity, decreased lock time and increased carrier stability. Modulation rates in excess of 10Mbps have been demonstrated. High efficiency power amplifiers operating at 3V have also been added to the family of amplifiers (PAE > 50%). This greatly enhanced efficiency allows higher RF power output while maintaining the same miniature form factor for the transmitter. Further, M/A-COM has added a silicon-on-sapphire PLL to the chip set, which operates at frequencies up to 3.0GHz. This paper details the enhancements to the components within the chip set, and the improvement in performance of the transmitter module. Test data is presented for the transmitter modules and individual components.

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
The U.S. Army’s Hardened Subminiature Telemetry and Sensor Systems (HSTSS) program has engaged the M/A-COM Corporation to work in the development of a highly accurate, crystal controlled telemetry transmitter chip set to be used in Army and other U.S. military munitions. A critical factor in this work is the operating environment of up to 100,000-g launch accelerations. To support the Army in this project, M/A-COM is developing integrated Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCO) for L and S band, a silicon synthesizer/phase locked loop (PLL) IC, and a family of power amplifiers. Lastly, the transmitter module will be miniaturized and hardened using M/A-COM’s latest chip-onboard mixed technology manufacturing capabilities. This new chip set will provide the telemetry engineer with unprecedented design flexibility. This paper will review the overall transmitter system design and provide an overview for each functional integrated circuit.

We focused our discussion in the context of the politics of quota that has with objective to decrease the frame of inequalities existent between women and men in the politics, besides of to analyze which the determinants responsible for the women's sub-representation. The research still consists of an analysis of the councilor s women profile and how they were seen in that space of power. We analyzed our study object in a gender vision, since this is related intrinsically the social relationships and the relationships of power. The women, for a long time, they were excluded of the participation in the public life, being just seen as mere expectants. This research is informed mainly by studies which discuss the Gender (Scott, 1990), (Perrot, 1988), (Badinter, 1995), (Bruschini, 2002). We also analyzed the power, politics in the vision of Marx (1996), Foucault (1982) and (Arendt, 2001). We tried to analyze the women's presence in the spaces public and private, showing your conflicts and contradictions faced in the society, focalizing the political character of the women's inclusion in the spaces in that are inserted. The instrument of collection of data was the semi-structured questionnaire, descriptive and analytical - critical. The analyses of the interviews show to the sub-representation of women over the years as a determining factor for these women continue in the invisibility. The women were interviewed councillora ex- bounded from 1988 to 2004. The conclusion the one that we arrived is that this sub-representation has as decisive the patriarchal system that prevailed for a long time in our society and still dominates and affects women in all areas of your life. This becomes more serious in the capitalist society in which prevail the interests of those that it stops the produced wealth

In other words, this dissertation aims to understand the reason of the asymmetry attributed to male and female, especially in what concerns the distribution of ecclesiastic works and the authority given to male, as well as the implication of this reality in the reconfiguration of morality and religious praxis in daily life of individuals and involved groups. From this perspective, this work was divided in three chapters, in which I investigate the tension/relationship between faith and secularism, for from this question on concessions and/or prohibitions related to the limits and involvement of the followers with the world and with the very Pentecostal ethos arise. I also analyze here aspects concerning to both ecclesiastic hierarchy and power, with the objective of elucidating how it occurs, what kind of criteria and implications they consider as well as about the nature of the religious labor division between men and women and, finally, I try to understand how the conversion/adhesion of members is reflected in the redefinitions of gender and its relationship between the ecclesiastical and domestic spaces. The diligence and energy spent in this work is in the hope that its fruits can corroborate in the expansion of anthropological knowledge which, in this particular case, involves the Brazilian Pentecostal phenomenon
Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Educa??o, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017.
The present dissertation analyzes how the homophobic discourses circulating in the curricula of the films "Billy Elliot (England, 2000)", "Carol (United Kingdom / United States, 2015)", "C.R.A.Z.Y. - Madras de Amor (Canada, 2005)" and "Madame Sat? (Brazil, 2002)", demand normalized bodies in a heteronormative pattern and what effects they have on the characters. I take as a methodology the analysis of the discourse, inspired by Foucauld. The analyzes will be carried out through the speeches, the scenes, the sounds, the images, the explicit and silenced things. As well as some concepts ? curriculum, gender, homophobia, heteronormativity, norm, discourse, knowledge-power relations and subjectivation processes and subject positions ? were chosen as theoretical-conceptual tools for this research. In theoretical terms, this dissertation was inscribed in the field of Cultural Studies, in the version of post-critical curriculum studies. Thus, the central concept of research is curriculum, it is understood that it teaches ways of being, thinking and acting to people, as well as producing certain types of subjects and bodies. Likewise, the concept of discourse has important space, being understood as "practices that systematically form the objects of which they speak" (Foucault 1986: 56). I emphasize that the discourse of homophobia circulates in the most diverse spaces producing effects on the bodies, demanding positions of subject, be it in the movies, novels, school, family, religion, the wheel of friends. The central problem of this research is: how have gender discourses, through homophobic discourses, demanded normalized bodies in a heteronormative pattern in the films under analysis? For that, I have as specific objectives: to verify the processes of construction of so-called feminine and masculine practices in the investigated films; Register which brands are named and classified as "normal" to gender positions; Identify which generalized subject positions are demanded and produced in daily activities in the films in question; To investigate how gender inequalities are expressed in the studied films; To analyze which mechanisms, techniques and strategies of power are used to reinforce homophobia in these cinematographic works; Identify and analyze possible attempts to erase homosexual marks or escapes in the characters of the films. The central argument is that there is a reiteration of the heteronormative pattern in the curriculum of the investigated films even when one perceives an alleged attempt to break with patterns considered as ideal and normal. In this way, it adds up to the homophobic and heteronormative discourse, for example, biological, religious, psychological and moral discourses, demanding heterosexual subject positions.

Zhang, Anquan. "An Empirical Comparison of Four Data Generating Procedures in Parametric and Nonparametric ANOVA." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/329.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to empirically investigate the Type I error and power rates of four data transformations that produce a variety of non-normal distributions. Specifically, the transformations investigated were (a) the g-and-h, (b) the generalized lambda distribution (GLD), (c) the power method, and (d) the Burr families of distributions in the context of between-subjects and within-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA). The traditional parametric F tests and their nonparametric counterparts, the Kruskal-Wallis (KW) and Friedman (FR) tests, were selected to be used in this investigation. The four data transformations produce non-normal distributions that have either valid or invalid probability density functions (PDFs). Specifically, the data generating procedures will produce distributions with valid PDFs if and only if the transformations are strictly increasing - otherwise the distributions are considered to be associated with invalid PDFs. As such, the primary objective of this study was to isolate and investigate the behaviors of the four data transformation procedures themselves while holding all other conditions constant (i.e., sample sizes, effect sizes, correlation levels, skew, kurtosis, random seed numbers, etc. all remain the same). The overall results of the Monte Carlo study generally suggest that when the distributions have valid probability density functions (PDFs) that the Type I error and power rates for the parametric (or nonparametric) tests were similar across all four data transformations. It is noted that there were some dissimilar results when the distributions were very skewed and near their associated boundary conditions for a valid PDF. These dissimilarities were most pronounced in the context of the KW and FR tests. In contrast, when the four transformations produced distributions with invalid PDFs, the Type I error and power rates were more frequently dissimilar for both the parametric F and nonparametric (KW, FR) tests. The dissimilarities were most pronounced when the distributions were skewed and heavy-tailed. For example, in the context of a parametric between subjects design, four groups of data were generated with (a) sample sizes of 10, (b) standardized effect size of 0.50 between groups, (c) skew of 2.5 and kurtosis of 60, (d) power method transformations generating distributions with invalid PDFs, and (e) g-and-h and GLD transformations both generating distributions with valid PDFs. The power results associated with the power method transformation showed that the F-test (KW test) was rejecting at a rate of .32 (.86). On the other hand, the power results associated with both the g-and-h and GLD transformations showed that the F-test (KW test) was rejecting at a rate of approximately .19 (.26). The primary recommendation of this study is that researchers conducting Monte Carlo studies in the context described herein should use data transformation procedures that produce valid PDFs. This recommendation is important to the extent that researchers using transformations that produce invalid PDFs increase the likelihood of limiting their study to the data generating procedure being used i.e. Type I error and power results may be substantially disparate between different procedures. Further, it also recommended that g-and-h, GLD, Burr, and fifth-order power method transformations be used if it is desired to generate distributions with extreme skew and/or heavy-tails whereas third-order polynomials should be avoided in this context.

The interviewed subjects had been adult women who had resumed their school trajectory, after certain period without frequenting educational establishments. Aware of that those identities can be per-ceived through the observations of the discursive practices, we question: which discursive practices and power relations involve and constitute those women? Which identity positionings they take through the discursive practices and power relations that include them and that are identified in their stories? Which linguistic marks characterize, in the speech of those women, forms of resistance in the con-stitution of identities? We intend to investigate the constitution of woman identities in the contemporanity; pointing discursive practices and power relations which in-volve women that converge to their identity constitution; exploring in the linguistic materiality effects of senses that emanate of the discursive practices and power relations which involve the collaborators in the identity constitution in private and public spaces. Research corpus is composed by stories of life granted by three women, collected through semidirected interview between 2004 and 2005. This dissertation intends to investigate the cook s professional activity, based on data from a determined specific professional genre in Natal (RN), in order to establish aspects related not only to the activity performed (activity which manifests itself empirically in registered behaviors), but also related to the real aspects of the work activity, that also compromises the non-realized options of the guiding of professional activity, be it by a matter of choice, be it due to the activity s own impediment. In this context, we tried to evaluate how much the professional activity observed keeps in relation to the reference practices of the professional genre, be it in terms of conformity, be it in terms of innovation (stylization) in relation to this genre. In addition, we tried to verify the contribution of the school and extra-school knowledge to the professional activity observed. Such work plan took on a preliminary step of the description of the socialprofessional profile of a cook in the city of Natal (RN), followed by a step of clinical labor approach, specifically utilizing as a methodological tool the simple and crossed self-confrontation procedure guided by the francophone theoretical referential of the Activity Clinic. The preliminary step in the description of profile of cooks from Natal (RN), of which 138 cooks took part in, evidenced three professional groupings, all predominantly masculine in their composition and fundamentally differentiated amongst each other by the time of professional activity, schooling type and time, work place and salary. The clinical approach step, composed by a pair of cooks, allowed us to verify elements of the cooks subordination to the professional genre, but also evidences of individual innovation (stylization) by these cooks, as well as the predominance of usage of extra-school knowledge when compared to school knowledge. We tried, in this step, to demonstrate how much the inclusion and submission to the genre dynamic, coordinated with the stylization initiatives, was able to contribute to the maintenance and amplification of the cook s power of acting in his professional practice.

Croydon, Robert Henry. "Patronage, power and probity : accountability and aspiration in publicly funded development." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/99832/.

Abstract:
The research examines actions and relationships described as patronage which have contributed to the development of architecture and the built environment. In so doing it first seeks to identify the characteristics that have defined such patronage historically. It then moves to examine whether such characteristics could be identified in the promotion and execution of publicly funded projects in the modern day. The focus on aspirational forms of development which relied upon the commitment of public resources allowed the following proposition to be more fully tested. That is that the forms of patronage evidenced historically cannot be replicated in a democratic polity like contemporary Britain for reasons which include current requirements relating to the exercise of probity in management and public office. As an inevitable consequence of the universal franchise and wider democratic accountability those commissioning public works do not then enjoy the relative autonomy exercised by those described as patrons historically. A case study research strategy was adopted and undertaken focussing on major publicly funded developments in Cardiff between 1986 and 2006. Those, expressly or implicitly, aspired to the creation of places which would embody symbolic or cultural capital. Among the factors examined are the impartiality required of bureaucracies and political pressures for public bodies to prioritise quantifiable short-term outputs over less tangible longer-term assessment of environmental qualities. Other countervailing forces considered are prevailing economic conditions and market forces, which are similarly short-term, the cultural climate and public support for such development. The conclusions of the research then question the extent to which actions and relationship described as patronage can be the effective means of realising publicly funded urban development of notable quality.

Abstract:
Lean duplex stainless steels are austeno-ferritic steels with lower nickel and molybdenum contents, developed in the late 90's. Considering mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and cost of raw material, this family is an interesting alternative to standard austenitic stainless steels, which currently represent two thirds of stainless steel production. However, lean duplex steels are relatively recent and their thermal stability has been relatively little studied, especially during long term aging. In this study, the microstructural evolution of a lean duplex steel 2101 was studied during isothermal aging at temperatures between 20 °C and 850 °C, from few minutes to several months. Aging kinetics were followed by thermoelectric power measurements (TEP), from which aged states were selected to be characterized by electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. At intermediate temperatures of 350 - 450 °C, Fe-Cr demixing and precipitation of Ni-Mn-Al-Si-Cu occur in the ferrite despite the low nickel content of this grade, leading to an increase in the TEP. For higher temperatures, at about 700 °C, the mechanisms which govern the different microstructural evolutions have been described by a multi-scale approach: the nucleation and growth of M23C6 and Cr2N, observed from few minutes of aging and the σ phase precipitation, observed for longer aging time. The latter is accompanied by a transformation of δ ferrite in γ2 secondary austenite, and by the partial transformation of austenite into martensite during cooling. The effect of different phases on the TEP of the lean duplex steel can be qualitatively described during aging by a rule of mixture

Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical geographies of piracy from around 1680 to 1730, a period in which the relations between pirates and the state changed dramatically. More specifically, the thesis aims to employ a distinctively geographical lens in the study of aspects of piratical and anti-piratical agency, focusing on four particular spatialities. Firstly, the thesis seeks to reanimate the pirate, to study their world through movement and mobilities, both real and imagined, to show how these mattered for the way pirates were rationalised by the state, and how their actual movements differed from those encoded in the notion of the ‘roving’ pirate. Secondly, this thesis shows how questions of space, power and politics played out aboard the pirate ship, attending specifically to certain spatial practices apparent among many pirates, whereby this thesis considers critically the extent to which politics was entangled with space in the life of the pirate afloat. Thirdly, it is suggested that the ‘mercantilist discourse’ that framed piracy as an existential threat to the development of the early-modern state and the accompanying changes to the institutional architecture and everyday practices of the state were underpinned by hitherto neglected geographies of power and representation. Finally, this thesis explores the dark and disturbing geographies of punishment visited upon the bodies of captured pirates. The prison, the gallows and the gibbet are shown to have been important sites in the move towards the social exclusion of the pirate, and it argued that this process of ‘othering’ was permeated with a distinctively geographical logic. These cuts each suggest new perspectives on the story of piracy and the ‘salt-water state’ in the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth century, foregrounding important patterns, practices and processes that gave distinctive shape to the lives, deaths and legacies of pirates.

Abstract:
Mobile communication is considered as one of the building blocks of smart cities, where citizens should be able to benefit from telecommunications services, wherever they are, whenever they want, and in a secure and non-costly way. This can be done by dense deployment of the latest generation of mobile broadband networks. However, this dense deployment will lead to higher energy consumption, and thus more gas emission and pollution. Therefore, it is crucial from environmental point of view to propose solution reducing energy consumption. In this thesis, we introduce dynamic resource management methods that increase throughput and energy efficiency, and thus reduce pollution. In this framework, we are targeting green multi-cell networks where increased energy efficiency must take into account the increased demand of data by mobile users. This increase, which is exponential in terms of throughput, pushed operators to use the entire frequency spectrum in all cells of the latest generation of mobile networks. As a result, Inter-Cellular Interference (ICI) became preponderant and degraded the performance of users, particularly those with poor radio conditions. In this thesis, we focus on the techniques of power control on the downlink direction, which is considered as one of the key methods of Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) while focusing on energy efficient methods. We propose centralized and decentralized methods for this problem of power allocation: centralized methods through convex optimization, and decentralized methods based on non-cooperative game theory. Furthermore, we propose a power control heuristic which has the advantage of being stable and based on signaling messages already existing in the system. The power control problem has a relevant impact on the allocation of radio resources and on the association of mobile users with their servicing Base Station. Therefore, in the second part of the thesis, we formulated a global problem encompassing power control, radio resources allocation, and control of users’ association to a base station. These three sub-problems are treated iteratively until the convergence to the overall solution. In particular, we propose three algorithms for the user association problem: a centralized algorithm, a semi-distributed algorithm and finally a fully distributed algorithm based on reinforcement learning. In addition, for power allocation we implement centralized solutions and distributed solutions. The proof of convergence for the various algorithms is established and the in-depth simulations allow us to evaluate and compare quantitatively the performance, the energy efficiency, and the convergence time of the proposed algorithms

Abstract:
The opera libretto is a privileged, though often ignored, medium for probing the collective psyche of an era and its society. Like other human creations, be they purely intellectual and/or manual, it offers a window, opening a new perspective on a bygone world, and once cleansed of the dirt deposited by the centuries and open, it lets out the light and clamour of another century. The aim will be to reinstall the drammi per musica of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) in their cultural and social context, to recreate the fullest possible reception of the work and have a chance to get as close as possible to the experience of the original audience. Faced with the silence of the indirect sources, it becomes essential to plunge into the heart of the booklets, to take an interest in the words and images, to give the music its true voice, trying to clarify all that the text implies, suggests, signifies, triggers in the spectator and to try to reconstruct a corpus of cultural references (literary, moral, religious, etc.), that colour the text with multiple nuances, but are often lost to today’s audience. Through five female roles (Partenope, Berenice, Bradamante, Rosmira and Alcina), we will question the representation of women, femaleness and femininity in the light of the notion of female power and its implications on the Italian opera scene in London between 1730 and 1737. We will also attempt to shed further light on this transitional period in the career of the composer, who gradually abandoned Italian opera to devote himself to English oratorio

Abstract:
This thesis develops a theory of international social closure to examine (i) the politics of membership in status groups – or, clubs – in international society and (ii) the persistence of clubs in international society. This thesis offers new concepts to improve the English School’s understanding of international society, its expansion, and its reproduction. In so doing it also addresses limitations and gaps in the IR status literature and the global governance and diplomacy literatures concerned with clubs and networks. This thesis analyses strategies of exclusion, entry, and incorporation used by actors to deny, attempt, or grant inclusion into clubs as well as the institutional contexts underpinning those clubs. Specifically, this research undertakes a study of instances of exclusion, entry, and incorporation in the context of three clubs: the Family of Civilised Nations, the Great Powers club, and G-summitry. In the first two cases, this research relies primarily on secondary sources while in the case of G-summitry it presents original empirical research gathered through archival research, interviews, and ethnographic participant observation. This thesis presents four main conclusions about the operation of closure: (i) the logics of different closure games are defined by overarching normative institutions of international society; (ii) despite a collectivist closure rule, closure in international society is predominantly individualistic; (iii) actors seeking entry tend to employ deferential entry strategies that reproduce a stratified status quo order; and (iv) incorporation promotes stratification along both functional and cultural lines. This thesis also draws three specific conclusions that run counter to much current scholarship: (i) contemporary international society is neither more open nor less hierarchical than nineteenth century international society; (ii) hierarchy is reproduced to a large degree by entry and incorporation strategies rather than exclusion strategies; and (iii) closure does not run along a ‘west versus the rest’ fault line.

Abstract:
96
Wireless sensor networks are composed of a group of geographically dispersed sensor nodes and a sink node, which can be utilized in military application and environmental observation of scientific research. Sensor nodes route the collected data to the sink node via multi-hop wireless links. Batteries usually serve as the power source for sensor nodes and typically can not be recharged or replaced when the energy is exhausted. Therefore, how to efficiently utilize the energy and thus prolong the overall life time of a sensor network is an important issue. In the past, the chain architecture proposed in PEGASIS is demonstrated to succeed in prolonging the life time of a sensor network. However, it incurs significant propagation delay in transmitting sensed data to the sink node. In this paper, we propose a novel data gathering scheme based on a chain-oriented grid architecture, called Grid Chain (G-Chain). Through the proposed G-Chain scheme, we restrict the transmission distance between nodes to prevent the energy consumption from being proportional to the transmission distance to the fourth power. In addition, we also use the determining the best data-gathering chain algorithm to form chain in the cells, thereby effectively reducing the transmission delay. The simulation results show that our proposed approach can achieve energy efficiency, especially when sensor nodes are densely deployed. Moreover, the G-Chain can also reduce delay in data transmission, balance the energy consumption among sensor nodes, and prolong the life time of a sensor network.

Abstract:
93
The first part of this thesis describes a dual-band driver amplifier for WLAN 802.11a and 802.11b/g applications. For the concern of linearity and efficiency, Class AB biasing is chosen for this amplifier, and an on-chip biasing network is designed to simplify the usage of power supply. The single-input/single-output dual-band matching networks are implemented by two Diplexer-liked networks composed of lumped elements on PCB. Measurement results show that P1dB in 2.4-GHz and 5.2-GHz are 8.3dBm and 7.2dBm, with corresponding PAE of 17.1% and 9.3%, respectively. The second part of this thesis describes two SiGe BiCMOS Class F power amplifiers for Bluetooth system. The input/output matching and harmonic loading networks of the first Class F power amplifier are composed of lumped elements on PCB. Measurement results show that the amplifier could provide an output power of about 20dBm with PAE of about 40%. From the experience of the first design, the second is a fully integrated Class F power amplifier, leaving only the output matching network off-chip. Experiment results show that the output power is 20dBm, and the PAE is 34.2%.

Abstract:
100
Power amplifiers are extensively used at the output stage of the universally electronic equipments. According to the structure of the output power transistors, three kinds of linear power amplifier, such as class-A, class-AB, and class-G, are used popularly. Although the power conversion efficiency of class-A is the lowest among all of them, but the harmonic distortion of class A is the best of them. So class-A power amplifiers are used in most of the low power usage. Due to the maximum 78.5% efficiency, traditional class-AB power amplifiers are used in most of the medium/large power required applications. In this paper, we will propose a modified version of class-AB structure called class-G power amplifier. By using a auto-switched high/low dual DC power supply voltages, class-G structure power amplifiers can further increase the practical overall conversion efficiency better then that of class-AB. However, the switched operation will introduces the increasing of the total harmonic distortion (THD) , therefore how to promote the linearity of the class-G amplifier by means of decreasing the THD becomes the most important challenge for the designer. This paper proposed a systematic study on the critical ratio of the dual DC supply voltages and the mechanism to switching them automatically. Additionally, a simply and novel smoothing method to reducing the THD generated by the switching operation is studied. The proposed class-G amplifier is simulated and implemented to verify our discussion. An electronic circuit simulation CAD software program - MultiSim from National Instrument (NI) Corp. is used for simulating as well as a 80W PCB-based class-G power amplifier is implemented and measured with the helps from professional speaker manufacturer Meiloon Industrial Co, Ltd. The amazing structure we designed and the good agreement between the results of simulation and experimental measured show that it is a successive study. The auto-switched mechanism operated as well as our estimated, and the reduction of the THD after adding the novel smoothing method was down to 0.062%. Generally speaking, the method proposed in this paper is useful to promote the class-G power amplifier for the high power electrical- acoustic Hi-Fi applications with good linearity and better practical conversion efficiency then that of class-AB power structure offered.

Howes, Caroline G. "Power line risk to Cape (Gyps coprotheres) and white-backed (G. africanus) vultures in Southern Africa." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/21046.

Abstract:
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Johannesburg, South Africa March 2016
This study examined the movements of white-backed (Gyps africanus) and Cape vultures (G. coprotheres) to assess their habitat preferences, measure seasonal changes in foraging behaviour, and examine where vultures are at risk of electrocution by and collision with power lines. White-backed and Cape vultures are two Old World vulture species found in southern Africa. They are listed as Critically Endangered and Endangered respectively, with massive population declines over the past three decades. These declines are due to poisoning, habitat loss, lack of food, use in traditional medicine, and electrical infrastructure mortality. Vultures provide key ecosystem services such as reducing disease transmission, cycling nutrients, and attracting tourists and therefore, a loss of vultures could cost the continent millions of US dollars. Thirteen vultures (five white-backed and eight Cape vultures) were tracked using either DUCK-4A or BUBO-4A GPS-GSM trackers (Ecotone Telemetry, Sopot, Poland). Birds were tracked between April 2013 and October 2014. These data were used to examine the habitat suitability of both species using MaxEnt habitat suitability modelling. Key drivers of country-wide habitat suitability for white-backed vultures were mean temperature (30.9% contribution), precipitation seasonality (22.0% contribution), and biome (19.5% contribution), while key drivers for Cape vultures were distance to artificial feeding station (24.8% contribution), and precipitation seasonality (50.5% contribution). Anthropological variables (land use, cattle density, and population density) contributed very little to the models. Using the same tracking data, seasonal changes in foraging movements were examined, particularly in relation to hypothetical food availability. Data were categorised by seasons (winter, spring, summer, and autumn) using weather data over the past decade. There was little evidence for seasonal movement in white-backed or Cape vultures which may be because food availability is not the limiting factor regardless of time of year. Lastly, a model was constructed in MaxEnt using the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife and Energy Programme dataset of white-backed and Cape vulture electrocutions by and collisions with power lines. Voltage was a major contributor to risk in every model for both collision and electrocution. This is likely to be related to the type and height of the power line structures rather than actual voltage. Either land use or population density also contributed to all four models. Slope contributed to white-backed vulture models while feeding station and elevation contributed to Cape vulture models. Each of these variables probably relates not only to the likelihood of vulture presence but also how vultures behave in the area (e.g. flying lower in natural or low population areas to forage more effectively therefore putting them at higher risk of collision). This study suggests that management initiatives should include carefully placing vulture feeding stations to change foraging patterns and provide safe, uncontaminated carrion, and proactive retrofitting of high risk power lines to reduce the high unnatural mortality in white-backed and Cape vultures in South Africa. It is important to continue to improve these models using more tracking data from more populations of white-backed and Cape vultures, and more electrocution and collision data gathered from regular, randomly selected power line surveys.
M T 2016

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cape Verde, despite being an island economy and devoid of natural resources, has been characteristic of the countries that could have a reasonable success in stabilizing macroeconomic and financial strength, to the region where it is inserted, is using his progression to developing country medium. The main objective of this work is to investigate and determine empirically the structure of the banking sector in Cape Verde, the regulation and supervision of this market, thus verifying the paradigm of Structure-Behavior-Results (S-B-R)2, as well as its contribution to the strength the whole financial system. To start the work, was used as the source, processing and analysis of data from Central Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) and studies of a panel of balances of commercial banks operating in the Cape Verdean market between 2000 and 2011. The study was centered primarily in four (4) major national banks (BCA, CECV, BI and BNC), the market called "onshore", which represent more than 80% of total assets of the financial system in Cape Verde. It was clear that, based on the results found (such as Concentration Index and Herfindahl H), the Cape Verdeian banking market is highly concentrated, with low volatility in time, thus presenting typical characteristics of the oligopolistic market structure, hence the analysis of more complex theoretical models and quite realistic as the theory of banking industry organization, with emphasis on original models of Klein-Monti, Cournot, Bertrand and Steckelberg. Finally, it was tried to approach the so-called Regulation and Supervision policies, defined and supervised by the BCV, which, in function of this, exercises its attributions in the securities and insurance capital markets, acting according to the Monista model.

Roach, Lisa Aretha Nyala. "Temporal Variations in the Compliance of Gas Hydrate Formations." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/44081.

Full text
Abstract:
Seafloor compliance is a non-intrusive geophysical method sensitive to the shear modulus of the sediments below the seafloor. A compliance analysis requires the computation of the frequency dependent transfer function between the vertical stress, produced at the seafloor by the ultra low frequency passive source-infra-gravity waves, and the resulting displacement, related to velocity through the frequency. The displacement of the ocean floor is dependent on the elastic structure of the sediments and the compliance function is tuned to different depths, i.e., a change in the elastic parameters at a given depth is sensed by the compliance function at a particular frequency. In a gas hydrate system, the magnitude of the stiffness is a measure of the quantity of gas hydrates present. Gas hydrates contain immense stores of greenhouse gases making them relevant to climate change science, and represent an important potential alternative source of energy. Bullseye Vent is a gas hydrate system located in an area that has been intensively studied for over 2 decades and research results suggest that this system is evolving over time. A partnership with NEPTUNE Canada allowed for the investigation of this possible evolution. This thesis describes a compliance experiment configured for NEPTUNE Canada’s seafloor observatory and its failure. It also describes the use of 203 days of simultaneously logged pressure and velocity time-series data, measured by a Scripps differential pressure gauge, and a Güralp CMG-1T broadband seismometer on NEPTUNE Canada’s seismic station, respectively, to evaluate variations in sediment stiffness near Bullseye. The evaluation resulted in a (- 4.49 x10-3± 3.52 x 10-3) % change of the transfer function of 3rd October, 2010 and represents a 2.88% decrease in the stiffness of the sediments over the period. This thesis also outlines a new algorithm for calculating the static compliance of isotropic layered sediments.
