Abstract:
AbstractOn 4–5 September 2013, a relatively shallow layer of northerly dry airflow was observed just west of the core deep convection associated with the low-level center of the pre-Gabrielle (2013) tropical disturbance. Shortly thereafter, the core deep convection of the disturbance collapsed after having persisted for well over 24 h. The present study provides an in-depth analysis of the interaction between this dry airflow layer and the pre-Gabrielle disturbance core deep convection using a combination of observations, reanalysis fields, and idealized simulations. Based on the analysis, we conclude that the dry airflow layer played an important role in the collapse of the core deep convection in the pre-Gabrielle disturbance. Furthermore, we found that the presence of storm-relative flow was critical to the inhibitive effects of the dry airflow layer on deep convection. The mechanism by which the dry airflow layer inhibited deep convection was found to be enhanced dry air entrainment.

Abstract:
The effect of DICA (50 mg·liter-1), BCDMH (12 mg available chlorine/liter), and HQC (250 mg-liter]) on the longevity of 14 popular cut flower species was assessed. Longevity was significantly extended in: Rosa hybrida L. `Gabrielle' and Scilla campanulata L. Squill. by all germicides; Lilium parkmannii L. `Nepal', Gerbera jamesonii L. `Mercy', and Narcissus tazetta L. `Fortune' by DICA and BCDMH; Gypsophila paniculata L. `R22' by DICA and HQC; and Freesia hybrida Eckl. ex Klatt `White Bergunden' by BCDMH. No effect on longevity was found in Dendranthema grandiflora (Ramat) Kitamura. `Horim', Dianthus caryophyllus L. `Medea', Dianthus barbatus L., Iris hollandica L. `Pearl', and Gerbera jamesonii L. `Double Delight'. Longevity was significantly reduced by DICA in Alstroemeria aurantiaca L. `Mona Lisa' and Tulipa hybrida L. `Apeldoorn'. Analysis of microbial concentrations showed that proliferation was effectively controlled by DICA and BCDMH, but not by HQC. Levels of up to 106 cfu·ml-1 were detected in water, indicating that species not affected by germicides can tolerate these microbial quantities. Fresh weight and solution uptake data indicated that germicides acted primarily by improving solution uptake. Longevity was significantly reduced in R. hybrida `Gabrielle' and D. caryophyllus `Medea' flowers placed in solutions containing high counts of microorganisms (>108 cfu·ml-1) isolated from D. caryophyllus or R. hybrida. Chemical names used: 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH); sodium dichloroisocyanuric acid (DICA); 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC).

Abstract:
J. D. H. and Gabrielle Donnay have produced an instructive and fascinating analysis of Maori rafter designs. My task is to add a few thoughts from an anthropological perspective, to expand upon their insights by placing them in a broader perspective of Maori art and culture. The article will develop something like the spiral motif that is so common in Maori art, covering an increasingly wide area as it goes along. It begins with a few comments about Maori rafter patterns ( kowhaiwhai), the particular subject of the Donnay's article. Next it relates structures of symmetry and antisymmetry in rafter designs to other elements of Maori art. Finally, it suggests connections between those artistic patterns and other aspects of Maori culture. The discussion will concern traditional rather than contemporary Maori culture-as it was up to roughly the middle of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Abstract The downshear reformation of Tropical Storm Gabrielle (2001) was simulated at 1-km horizontal resolution using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. The environmental shear tilted the initial parent vortex downshear left and forced azimuthal wavenumber-1 kinematic, thermodynamic, and convective asymmetries. The combination of surface enthalpy fluxes and a lack of penetrative downdrafts right of shear allowed boundary layer moist entropy to increase to a maximum downshear right. This contributed to convective instability that fueled the downshear convection. Within this convection, an intense mesovortex rapidly developed, with maximum boundary layer relative vorticity reaching 2.2 × 10−2 s−1. Extreme vortex stretching played a key role in the boundary layer spinup of the mesovortex. Cyclonic vorticity remained maximized in the boundary layer and intensified upward with the growth of the convective plume. The circulation associated with the mesovortex and adjacent localized cyclonic vorticity anomalies comprised a developing “inner vortex” on the downshear-left (downtilt) periphery of the parent cyclonic circulation. The inner vortex was nearly upright within a parent vortex that was tilted significantly with height. This inner vortex became the dominant vortex of the system, advecting and absorbing the broad, tilted parent vortex. The reduction of tropical cyclone (TC) vortex tilt from 65 to 20 km in 3 h reflected the emerging dominance of this upright inner vortex. The authors hypothesize that downshear reformation, resulting from diabatic heating associated with asymmetric convection, can aid the TC’s resistance to shear by reducing vortex tilt and by enabling more diabatic heating to occur near the center, a region known to favor TC intensification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The analysis of scientific literature shows that the study of adrenal morphology in humans and animals is an urgent problem of biology and medicine from ancient times to the present day. In the historical aspect, we can distinguish three stages of studying the adrenal gland that differ in the directions of research. The first stage corresponds to the research of scientists of the XVI–XVIII centuries (Bartolomeo Eustachio, Andreas Vesalius, Gabriele Folloppio, Girolamo Fabrici, Andriaan Spieghel, Johann Vesling, Giulia Casseria, Caspar Bauhin, Johann Grafenberg, Caspar Bartholin, Thomas Bartholin, Giulio Casserio, Antonio Molinetti, Jean Riolan, Thomas Wharton, Giovanni Lancisi, Jakob Winslow, Antony Valsalva, Albrecht Haller, Johann Meckel, Jean Senac, Armand Cassan). Their works is devoted to the study of topography, macroscopic structure and function of the adrenal gland. Studies of morphological scientists of the second stage (late XVIII – mid XX century) correspond to the study of the structure of the adrenal gland at the microscopic level. Scientists like Albert Kelliker, Johann Ecker, Thomas Addison, Gabriel Colin, Alfred Kohn and Jay Arnold used histological and histochemical research methods. Edward Schafer, George Oliver, Vladislav Szymonowicz, John Abel, Jokiti Takmine, Welter Cannon, Edward Kendall to the study of the features of adrenal hormone secretion. Scientific works of the mid-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries can be combined in the third stage of research on the morphology of the adrenal gland. It is devoted to solving issues related to the formation of the adrenal gland in the process of filogenesis and ontogenesis, the features of the structure and function of the organ in normal and pathological conditions. A significant contribution to the study of the morphology of the adrenal gland of animals at the third stage was made by such scientists as Ziyade A. M., Dardykina O. N., Harina V. V., Atagimov M. Z., Torguj P. M., Antipin I. A., Shishkin A. P., Volkova M. V., Shevchenko L. F., Sidorova O. G., Vovchenko M. B., Salekh M. M., Ovcharenko N. D., Zaika S. V., Samatova I. M., Gorbacheva E. Abstract:
ABSTRACT The extreme heat from wildfire alters soil properties and incinerates vegetation, leading to changes in infiltration capacity, ground cover, soil erodibility, and rainfall interception. These changes promote elevated rates of runoff and sediment transport that increase the likelihood of runoff-generated debris flows. Debris flows are most common in the year immediately following wildfire, but temporal changes in the likelihood and magnitude of debris flows following wildfire are not well constrained. In this study, we combine measurements of soil-hydraulic properties with vegetation survey data and numerical modeling to understand how debris-flow threats are likely to change in steep, burned watersheds during the first 3 years of recovery. We focus on documenting recovery following the 2016 Fish Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains, California, and demonstrate how a numerical model can be used to predict temporal changes in debris-flow properties and initiation thresholds. Numerical modeling suggests that the 15-minute intensity-duration (ID) threshold for debris flows in post-fire year 1 can vary from 15 to 30 mm/hr, depending on how rainfall is temporally distributed within a storm. Simulations further demonstrate that expected debris-flow volumes would be reduced by more than a factor of three following 1 year of recovery and that the 15-minute rainfall ID threshold would increase from 15 to 30 mm/hr to greater than 60 mm/hr by post-fire year 3. These results provide constraints on debris-flow thresholds within the San Gabriel Mountains and highlight the importance of considering local rainfall characteristics when using numerical models to assess debris-flow and flood potential.

Abstract:
The paper studies and analyzes the reception of the French Catholic philosopher and the initiator of personalism Emmanuel Mounier (1905-1950), in Croatia and the former Yugoslavia from the mid-sixties to the end of the 20th century. The paper examines articles on Mounier and his personalism, his works and the influence of some of his ideas. Since the mid-sixties, the personalism of Emmanuel Mounier, as well as personalism as a philosophical direction in general, has largely been perceived as an attempt to synthesize Marxism and existentialism, or as an addition to Marxism. Such an approach was particularly highlighted in the works of Franjo Zenko and Zagorka Pešić-Golubović. This gave personalism, particularly Mounier’s, certain legitimacy and a positive reflection within the then dominant, 'official' Marxist circle, but at the same time it became marginal and questionable to Christian thinkers. It is evident that Mounier's personalism was perceived apart from the rest of personalist 'milieu' (Jacques Maritain, Nikolai Berdyaev, Gabriel Marcel, Denis de Rougemont, and others), which was strongly opposed to Marxism and existentialism. This is also the case with personalist activism, regarding which there is mention only of the left-wing group around Mounier and the Esprit magazine, while the right-wing and national-oriented personalist groups were not mentioned at all. Catholic thinkers and those from emigration built a reserved stance, and from them there are no comprehensive or opinion articles on the subject. The author also attributes the questionable understanding of personalism, as well as the lesser acceptance of Mounier's work, to the fact that there is not a single translation of a Mounier’s work into Croatian language.

Some of these results are known; some are new. We give limiting constants explicitly, where previously they have been evaluated in less generality or not at all. The graphs we consider include the k-nearest-neighbours graph, the Gabriel graph, the minimal directed spanning forest, and the on-line nearest-neighbour graph.

Abstract:
AbstractVerbal reports, specifically in the form of concurrent verbalizations (i.e., think-alouds [TAs]), have played a foundational role in the production of knowledge in applied linguistics. Most often drawn upon because the talk they generate is deemed to accurately reflect individual learners’ thought or cognitive processes as they complete an L2 task, concurrent verbalization methods have been central to investigations of and claims about the learning, use, and assessment of L2 vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing (among others). And although critical discussion concerning the quality of spoken data obtained through concurrent verbalization methods continues among L2 researchers (e.g., Cohen, Andrew D. 1987. Using verbal reports in research on language learning. In Claus Færch & Gabriele Kasper (eds.), Introspection in second language research, 82–95. Philadelphia: Multilingual Matters; Cohen, Andrew D. 1996. Verbal reports as a source of insights into second language learner strategies. Applied Language Learning 7(1–2). 5–24; Cohen, Andrew D. 2013. Verbal report. In Carol A. Chapelle (ed.), The encyclopedia of applied linguistics. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell), the majority of this discussion has focused primarily on how best to generate talk which “more accurately reflect[s] the actual thought processes” of L2 users (Cohen, Andrew D. 2013. Verbal report. In Carol A. Chapelle (ed.), The encyclopedia of applied linguistics. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell: 1). The result has been to further naturalize approaches to concurrent verbalizations which treat language as a neutral means for accessing cognition, and similarly, which treat the verbalizations themselves as individually accomplished events. In this article, my aim is to diversify the critical discussion by describing how discursive psychology (e.g., Edwards, Derek & Jonathan Potter. 1992. Discursive psychology. New York: Sage; Potter, Jonathan. 2006. Cognition and conversation. Discourse Studies 8(1). 131–140) and a conversation analytic perspective (e.g., Kasper, Gabriele. 2009. Locating cognition in second language interaction and learning: Inside the skull or in public view? International Review of Applied Linguistics 47. 11–36; Markee, Numa & Mi-Suk Seo. 2009. To this end, after establishing some of the key differences between information processing, sociocultural, and discursive approaches, I draw on data from two recently published TA-based studies in an attempt to accomplish two goals: the first is to shift critical discussion towards issues of epistemology, methodology, and research representation, and the second is to identify methodological issues about which researchers working from different conceptual orientations might engage in cross-paradigmatic dialogue.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractA new dataset based on 5 yr of operational meteorological weather radars from the Amazon Protection System has enabled new knowledge in relation to rainfall in the Amazon basin. The rainy features are analyzed for 10 different regions in terms of the annual and diurnal cycles of radar reflectivity, as well as the vertical distribution, in addition to lightning data. Similarities between the annual and diurnal cycles are found in the northwestern and western, southwestern and southern, and northeastern and northern Amazon. Nocturnal peaks are found in stratiform fraction in the southern, southwestern, western, northwestern, northern, central western, and coastal regions. The convective fractions in the western, northwestern, northern, and central eastern regions also show nocturnal peaks. The radar reflectivity vertical distributions analysis indicates that in the northern coast close to Belém, heavy rainfall with deep convective systems is observed throughout the year, while heavy rainfall in the central Amazon close to Manaus, Tefé, and Santarém occurs in the dry season. More oceanic-like clouds are also observed there and in other locations on the northern coast like Macapá, where the frequency of lightning is quite low. São Gabriel da Cachoeira, located in the northwest portion of the Amazon basin, has a regime with rainfall in all seasons with a slight decrease from August to October when the systems become more convective and have more lightning.

Abstract:
Abstract We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant d. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^{\lambda }$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $\lambda$ is bounded by O(d). This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we prove a polynomial bound on the multiplicities of those that do appear with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the abovementioned cohomology modules. We give some applications of our methods in proving lower bounds on the degrees of defining polynomials of certain symmetric semi-algebraic sets, as well as improved bounds on the Betti numbers of the images under projections of (not necessarily symmetric) bounded real algebraic sets, improving in certain situations prior results of Gabrielov, Vorobjov, and Zell.

Abstract:
The prevalence of ADHD children increases every year. Some researchers have shown that psychosocial behavior therapy (antecedents-consequences modification) was effective to decrease hyperactivity and increase attention to ADHD children. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of antecedents-consequences modification by parents and teachers to decrease hyperactivity and increase attention to a 6 years old boy with ADHD. The study was a single case experimental design. Psychosocial behavior therapy has been used with antecedents-consequences modification. The antecedents-consequences modification was applied by teacher at school and parents at home. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results showed that there’s a significant decrease of hyperactivity behavior and significant increase of doing his assignment both at school and also at home. Not only about the content of behavior therapy itself, but how to give the therapy is important. Parents and teacher should do the therapy consistently, immediately, specifically and saliency to reach the target of intervention. Abstract:
Abstract Two species, Antiphyllum sp. nov. 1 and Zaphrufimia sp. nov. 1, the first corals found in Štur horizon of the upper Malinowickie Beds, Upper Pendleian (E 1 ), are here described. Additional study of the subspecies of Zaprufimia disjuncta show them to be more similar than previously thought. Although they occur mainly in the Enna and Barbara horizons, one specimen of Z. d. serotina comes from the Gabriela horizon. Biozone Zaphrufimia disujncta disjuncta/Z .d .praematura is proposed for the Enna and Barbara horizons. The subzone of Zaphrufimia/ Triadufimia of that Biozone, defined by the presence of Triadufimia gen. nov., is restricted to the Enna horizon. As confirmed by the occurrence of Cravenoceratoides edalensis, the new subzone roughly corresponds to the E2b1 ammonite Zone. An Antiphyllum/Ostravaia/Variaxon assemblage Zone is proposed for the coral assemblage of the Gaebler horizon. Cravenoceratoides nitidus present in the Roemer band (I b ) shows it to correlate with the E2b2 ammonite Zone. Comparison with other European regions suggests possible faunal exchange between those areas and the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Serpukhovian time.

ON HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WARThe author discusses the main trends in the research of Spanish civil war since early 1960s, when the first critical distance-based analyses were carried out by British, American, French and Spanish researchers. The paper reflects on works and interpretations by Hugh Thomas, Paul Preston, Stanley Peyne, Gabriel Jackson, Pierre Broué and Émile Témime, while briefly mentioning the books and views of Burnett Bolloten, Walther Bernecker, Ronald Radosh, Herbert Southworth, Helen Graham, E.H. Carr and Noam Chomsky. Furthermore, the author presents the development of the Spanish civil war historiography in Spain after Franco’s death, focusing mostly on works and assessments by Ángel Martin Viñas, Santos D. Juliá, Albert Reig Tapia, and Enrique Moradiellos.

Abstract:
The trend towards foreign investments in Serbia has been in rapid progress in recent years. The biggest and most valuable numbers of investments are coming from Italy. The authors’ expectation is that the trend of Italian investments in future will continue; therefore it is of high importance for the representatives of both countries’ business sectors to under-stand and accept differences and similarities to the other country’s business culture. Research of cultural differences between two nations , which are considered like a frame of business culture, helps avoiding possible misunderstandings and improving business cooperation be-tween two countries. Having in mind students of economics and management, on one hand like future leaders of Italian and Serbian business and on other like representatives of the cur-rent education value system in the field of economics and management, this study consists of an application of the 7-D Hofstede Model. The application of the model takes place through the administration of two surveys done by students of Serbian Megatrend University, in Bel-grade, and Italian Università degli Studi Gabriele d’Annunzio, in Pescara

Abstract:
We consider the generalized Jacobi weight [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]. As is shown in [D. Dai and L. Zhang, Painlevé VI and Henkel determinants for the generalized Jocobi weight, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 (2010), Article ID:055207, 14pp.], the corresponding Hankel determinant is the [Formula: see text]-function of a particular Painlevé VI. We present all the possible asymptotic expansions of the solution of the Painlevé VI equation near [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for generic [Formula: see text]. For four special cases of [Formula: see text] which are related to the dimension of the Hankel determinant, we can find the exceptional solutions of the Painlevé VI equation according to the results of [A. Eremenko, A. Gabrielov and A. Hinkkanen, Exceptional solutions to the Painlevé VI equation, preprint (2016), arXiv:1602.04694 ], and thus give another characterization of the Hankel determinant.

Abstract:
Lithoprobe line 55 represents an oblique seismic crossing of tectonic domains in the Manicouagan region of the Grenville Province in eastern Quebec that has provided a basis for construction of a 3-D model of crustal structure. Reprocessing of the seismic profile presented here has enhanced the imaging of prominent, out-of-the-plane reflection zones that originate from high-pressure metamorphic rocks northwest of the line. We show that after conventional migration the apparent dips of out-of-plane reflections can be compared with regional foliation trends, but the reflection orientations, in themselves, provide only weak constraints on the orientation of out-of-plane of reflectors. We describe and implement several graphical techniques to estimate reflector orientation near large bends in the profile. Using a prestack processing technique, we find poorly resolved but shallow dips and approximately eastward strike directions for reflections from Berthé, Hart Jaune, and Tshenukutish terranes near Relais Gabriel. While many of these seismically derived attitude measurements are broadly consistent with existing 3-D structural models, some discrepancies have yet to be fully resolved. The Bouguer gravity field in this area is dominated by several intense anomalies, including the Grenville Front gravity low and the Manicouagan Plateau gravity high. The residual gravity field, obtained by subtracting the predicted anomalies for these features from the Bouguer gravity field, provides evidence in support of a lateral basement ramp.

Abstract:
The feeding rates on soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., by three beetle species, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), Diabrotica balteata LeConte, and Colaspis louisianae Blake, were compared in bioassays in the laboratory. Eight soybean genotypes, including two resistant standards (PI171451 and PI229358), a resistant line (D89-9121), four resistant commercial cultivars (Lamar, Lyon, Crockett, and Shore), and a susceptible standard (Centennial) were planted on the research farm at St. Gabriel, LA. Beetles were collected from the field throughout central and south Louisiana, separated by gender, and placed in Petri dishes with leaflets of known leaf area. Feeding, mortality, and oviposition were monitored daily for 5 d. Per capita daily consumption by C. louisianae and D. balteata averaged between 3.5 and 2.5 mg dry weight, and C. trifurcata consumed 7.6 mg dry weight. Beetles of all species consumed more Centennial foliage than foliage from PI229358, PI171451, Lyon, and Shore. Consumption of other soybean genotypes varied among beetle species. Number of eggs deposited by C. trifurcata and C. louisianae did not vary significantly among soybean genotypes. Diabrotica balteata females were not observed ovipositing on leaves of any cultivar. Mortality varied significantly among beetle species, but not among soybean genotypes. Diabrotica balteata suffered the highest mortality and C. trifurcata the lowest. The results suggest cultivars resistant to C. trifurcata and D. balteata should also be effective against C. louisianae.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SUMMARY The article deals with the artistic activity of Krzysztof Aleksander Boguszewski (d. 1635), nobleman, spiritual and painter, active in Poznań in years 1624–1635. In the past, scholars tried to do all they could to expand his oeuvre by resorting to imprecise comparisons or overinterpretation of his works. Also, they wanted to found style of his paintings in works of Herman Han. In the light of documents, it is sure that Boguszewski was not the imitator or even pupil of Han. He probably learned to paint in confraternity of painters in Lublin or Lwów. In fact, we can only proof his signature in one existing work – The entry of St. Martin into Amiens from 1628, originally from Cistercian church in Paradyż, but today exposed in Poznań cathedral. Other paintings from Paradyż Abbey, like The Heavenly Jerusalem (1628?), The Immaculate Conception (1628?) and St. Paul (1628?) and effigies of St. Mary from church in Otorów and Biechów (1632) we can include in the works of Boguszewski using the compare method. The other painting attributed by scholars to artist are fundamentally different. The iconography of his works from Paradyż were projected by the Cistercian abbot, Marek Łętowski (d. 1629). His conception for Boguszewski works was based on the instructions of Church intellectualist, like Carlo Borromeo or Gabriele Paleotti. It is very probably, that the painter, who became a priest in parish church of St. Adalbert in Poznań in 1630, was personally involved in the idea of artists working for the reform of the Church after the council of Trent.
