Augustsson, Tina, and Emma Söderberg. "Sandgärdsgatan, Växjö : - En attraktivare gågata." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Technology and Design, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-891.
In the outskirts of Växjö many shoppingmalls are vastly expanding which in time could pose a threat to the city centre. Växjö city is, in shoppingaspects dominated by one main street, Storgatan. To achieve a more competitive central part of the city and complex street network, a widening of the center would be preferred. Closest at hand for a widening of the city centre is the paralell pedestrian street Sandgärdsgatan, which today is thought of as a backstreet. Our project is to propose examples on how to turn Sandgärdsgatan into a more attractive pedestrian street. Research have been carried out in the form of literaturestudies, interviews and polls aswell as fieldtrips to various urban environments. The proposals we have created include everything from remodelling and general restorations to street markets and placarding. The main proposals aside from being presented in text are also visualised in drawings whilst smaller changes are only mentioned in text.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to explore how Södra Förstadsgatan in Malmö will be affected by a shift from being a trafficked road to a pedestrian walkway. The study presents the findings of what a pedestrian walkway would mean for users along the street. It turns out that the traffic environment is bad for not only pedestrians and cyclists, but also for businesses. However, traders are worried about how sales would be affected should cars be unable to drive down the street. Based on Gehl's quality criteria, the street is observed and it appears that the qualities of the street lack on several points. In an interview with Klas Nydahl, he shows scepticism towards the establishment of a pedestrian walkway as he believes that the street will be too long thus becoming unviable for small shops along the street to maintain itself. Theories presented points to that a pedestrian walkway would not only improve the traffic environment but also benefit the traders with increased sales.

Full textIn cities around the world, lanes and parking lots are being converted into areas for walking and recreation. The dominance of the car and road traffic is questioned and life on foot is allowed to take over. Walking has crucial role in the vibrant and sustainable city. To create space for pedestrians, however, a design is required that attracts visit and recreation through pleasant environments. When transforming traffic environments into pleasant living environments, the traffic network in the city needs to be adapted to a more car-free lifestyle and the challenges of traffic need to be solved in other ways. Each place has its own conditions, which affects the result. Götgatan on Södermalm in Stockholm is a main street and an important link between north and south. The street has a long history and has changed several times. Today's street has large flows of pedestrians, but at the same time the cars take up a large part in the street space. This report aims to investigate the extent to which the street can be made more pleasant for pedestrians by removing car traffic. Criteria for pleasant street spaces and car-free traffic planning have been studied and led to the realization that the surfaces need to be redesigned for the purpose. Site inventory of southern Götgatan and an interview with an official from the city of Stockholm provide a basis for assessing what is possible to do on the location. The analysis shows that a full-scale pedestrian street from Folkungagatan to Ringvägen is difficult to implement without negative effects distressing the rest of the district. The width and length of the street make it difficult to motivate a pedestrian street. The conclusion is that less extensive measures can add the values needed and that seasonal pedestrian streets can be an alternative that does not have too much negative effect on accessibility.

Full textThis thesis deals with the temporary summer pedestrian streets in Stockholm as a public living rooms that promotes social interaction between people and enables everyday activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate social values of stay associated with summer pedestrian streets and to identify activities and functions that can strengthen the attractiveness of the summer pedestrian streets so they become common living rooms that attracts different target groups. Today’s summer pedestrian streets in Stockholm tends to focus around outdoor cafes, restaurants and consumption. The aim of this study is therefore to find ways to mitigate their impact on the character of the summer pedestrian streets, by supplementing with new functions and activities that are not solely related to consumption. In this way, the summer pedestrian street can become a more inclusive place, which does not exclude those who do not have finances enough to consume in order to take part in the public space. Historically, the city has been planned based on humans’ actions and interactions, the street environments were designed for pedestrians (Gehl, 2010; Faskunger 2007). However, today it is possible to see that the human dimensions in planning has disappeared, since the competition for the city’s surfaces intensified between pedestrians and cars (Jacobs, 1961; Gehl, 2010). A dense city can provide better conditions for active means of transport, while also promoting the social life of the city, as an increased amount of people in the same place leads to greater opportunities for people to meet other people, which is an important aspect of public space (TRAST, 2015). Furthermore, activities in urban settings are of great importance for spontaneous meetings and social contact, which in turn contributes to increased urban life (Jacobs, 1961; Gehl, 2010). The city’s design affects the activities that take place there, which in turn affect the creation of social contacts between people. People in motion are constantly creating variation, creating a stimulating environment that comprise a very great attraction (Gehl, 2010). Based on this, it is possible to investigate what attracts people to the summer pedestrian street. According to Jan Gehl, the city’s public spaces are required to invite people to stay to attract people, this is achieved if the place fulfill the requirements as a lively, safe, sustainable and healthy place (Gehl, 2010). Furthermore, it is of great importance that people who use the public place does not feel excluded (Montgomery, 2013). In Stockholm, there are large social divisions between groups and different areas, therefore well-functioning public spaces are of great importance for increased social cohesion in the city (Stockholms stad, 2015; 2016a). Through qualitative methods in the form of a literature study and interviews, qualitative and quantitative data has been handled in this study. This has led to the identification of six groups of functions and activities which are of great importance for the summer pedestrian streets’ attraction for different target groups. These groups of functions and activities form the foundation of the qualitative global analysis that was carried out to identify suitable reference projects to introduce on summer pedestrian streets in Stockholm. A case study was carried out at Swedenborgsgatan on Södermalm in Stockholm to analyze an existing summer pedestrian street and place theory in a real context, through site visits and analysis of previous quantitative studies on the street. Based on the global project analysis, a vision is presented for how Swedenborgsgatan as a summer pedestrian street can be supplemented with functions and activities, to become a more inclusive and attractive place, for different target groups. This thesis shows that summer pedestrian streets in Stockholm tends to revolve around consumption and outdoor cafes and restaurants, which risks only attracting a homogeneous group of people who can afford, have time and desire to stay in such an environment. Furthermore, common values of stay at the summer pedestrian street are identified, which contributes to people, regardless of gender, age or socio economic background, wanting to stay at the summer pedestrian street. The social aspects that the summer pedestrian street contributes with are also identified. This study shows great potential for summer pedestrian streets to strengthen the social life of the city and counteract exclusion, by implementing the right functions and activities, that complement a site based on its specific characteristics. In this way, the attraction of the summer pedestrian street can increase among all target groups. Furthermore, this study also shows that the summer pedestrian streets within Levande Stockholm have great opportunities to become common living rooms that appeals to different social groups, however, many challenges still remain.
Eriksson, Niklas, and Niklas Gustafsson.
