Abstract:
From 1946 to 1947, a famine ensued in Bessarabia, resulting in many victims. There are variety of interpretations of the causes of hunger, both in the scientific literature and in oral tradition of the region. In the last 15 years, a significant difference in the consciousness of the Gagauzes occured,as people stop being afraid and express their views openly. In some settlements inhabited by the Gagauzes (at local cemeteries), symbolic monuments commemorating the tragic events have been erected in recent years, and in the press and in scientific literature, this topic has ceased to be a forbidden topic.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to Mikhail Nikolaevich Guboglo – a famous scientist, professor, who is one of the founders of Russian ethno-sociology and Gagauz ethnology. The article analyzes the practical values of his new ethno-sociological methods and approaches in the context of Gagauz studies. It is noted that he studied not only the ethnogenesis of the Gagauz people, but also their everyday culture and lifestyles. The article examines the approach he developed to investigate the identities of the Gagauzes, the social functions of their everyday life in the post-war and other periods in the system of ethnological knowledge. The author argues that the biographical and autobiographical method he used allowed him to trace the fate of various elements of the socio-normative culture of the Gagauz people. The main areas of M.N. Guboglo’s contribution to Moldavian ethnology and Gagauz studies are revealed. According to his idea and under his leadership, a number of large-scale projects were successfully implemented: Russian-Moldavian symposia were held, collective monographs were published in the prestigious series “Peoples and Cultures”, collections were printed etc. Thanks to his efforts, a powerful impetus was given to Moldovan ethnology, and interdisciplinary research intensified. It is emphasized that he made an invaluable contribution to the development of Moldavian Gagauz studies. It is concluded that in the first decade of the 21st century, Gagauz studies transformed from descriptive ethnography to analytical ethnology.

Abstract:
The year 1995 was momentous for the Gagauz people located primarily in the towns and villages of southern Moldova in the area known as Gagauzia. The Gagauz leadership in Comrat and the Moldovan government in Chişinău reached agreement in December 1994 on autonomy for Gagauzia, ending a five-year secessionist movement involving both a war of words and sporadic conflict. For Chişinău, this agreement settled the lesser, but nonetheless important, of two secessionist movements that threatened the Moldovan state's viability. For Gagauzia, the agreement set the terms for extensive cultural, political, and social autonomy within Moldova. For Europe, this agreement broke new ground in granting a small nation control of its affairs within a larger state.

Abstract:
The post-Soviet area is a home for a several de facto states, which are entities that resemble “normal” states but lack international recognition. This paper examines a historical case study of the Gagauz Republic (Gagauzia), a de facto state that existed on the territory of Soviet and then independent Moldova between 1990 and 1995. Whilst the prevailing view in the literature on de facto states is that these entities strive for internationally recognised independence, this study draws on a new suite of sources (including interviews, memoirs and journalism) to argue that the Gagauz Republic’s leaders did not pursue the goal of independence. Instead, they sought autonomism, pursuing a measure of self-governance within Gagauzia’s two subsequent parent states, namely the Soviet Union and then independent Moldova.

Abstract:
The article dwells on the discussion around the self-designation of the residents of Bolgarsky village, founded in 1909–1910 in Aktobe District, Turgai Province, Russia. The author analyses the works by M. Stanchev and Y. Ganeva, who rely on the ethnonym Bulgarians, used as a self-name by the residents of the village, classify them as ethnic Bulgarians. It is proved that the village was founded by Turkic-speaking Orthodox migrants from Bugeac, known as Gagauz and now part of Gagauzia Autonomy. During migration, they identified themselves as Bulgarians and called ethnic Bulgarians toucans. It is argued that the village residents retained the Turkic language, which they call Bulgarian, and continue to identify themselves as Bulgarians, but admit that their language is similar to the languages of the Turkic peoples of the near abroad. The author substantiates the reason for the failed transition to the ethnonym Gagauz.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an institutional explanation for the peaceful solution of the conflict between the Moldovan state and its small Gagauz minority in the period from 1988 to 1995. The central argument is that different institutional arrangements during this time had a direct effect on the Moldovan state’s capacity to bring about autonomy for the Gagauz. I show how Gagauz leaders, conditioned by the territorial-based structures of the Soviet Union, mobilized a political movement to push for the creation of an autonomous republic, and how this preference for autonomy remained the consistent demand of the Gagauz throughout the early years of post-communist transition. This finding supports the contention that Gagauz preferences cannot be used to explain the rich variation in political outcomes during this period. I assert that the critical changes were essentially institutional: new electoral laws; revised parliamentary rules and procedures; and a complete rewriting of Moldova’s constitution. These innovations were crucial in enabling the inclusive-minded majority in the Moldovan parliament to overcome the power of nationalist veto players by increasing the majority’s control of the legislative agenda. The importance of these institutional factors is examined by careful analysis of the different stages of the Moldovan parliament’s accommodation of the Gagauz: from separatism and stalemate to compromise. Furthermore, I reassert the central role of institutional arrangements by discounting the external influence of Turkey as a patron state on the successful negotiations between Moldova and the Gagauz. Using previously unresearched archival material, unstructured interviews with many of the key actors, and local media reporting, this thesis challenges existing accounts of the Gagauz conflict in Moldova. These accounts assert that either the Gagauz reaction to titular nationalism or the shifting preferences of strategic-thinking elites was the key causal factor of the political outcomes observed during this period. In contrast, this thesis shows that institutional design played a decisive role in the resolution of this conflict. The findings of this research offer useful lessons for other ethnically-divided states with mobilized minorities.

Abstract:
The Gagauz are a minority living in the southern reaches of the Republic of Moldova. While adhering to the majority religion of Orthodox Christianity, their mother-tongue is a variety of Turkish, a fact that in conjunction with their cultural heritage has shaped their religious identity and transformed their religious practices. The aim of this thesis is to explore Gagauz religion from the perspective of lay religious practice. In doing so I take up the ongoing debate on 'folk' or 'popular' religion and aim to demonstrate how, in the case of the Gagauz, the academic category of 'folk religion' and the field of 'folk' religious practice are instrumental in the construction of Gagauz religious identity. This is explored on two levels. Firstly, on the level of the national political, clerical and academic discourse on the origins, ethno-genesis and religion of the Gagauz, and secondly, on the level of practice, examining how Church perspectives and lay agency operate at the micro-level during actual episodes of religious practice. The starting point of this research project is the 'texts' of Gagauz religion. Firstly, the way in which the 'texts' on Gagauz religion generated by scholarly, ecclesial and national political discourse instrumentalise religious identities in the construction of Gagauz national identity is discussed. This is followed by an exploration of how the 'primary texts' of Gagauz religious practice used in worship, healing and prayer shape religious consciousness on the ground. Both sets of 'texts' are explored within the wider social, historical and political contexts that underpin and define them. Finally, the role of 'performance' of the 'texts' in the creation, institutionalisation, and transmission of lay religious practice is considered. Each of these dimensions of text, context and performance highlight the role of language in the contested field of practice of 'folk religion' situated between the lay and 'official' institutions of Gagauz Orthodoxy.

Abstract:
The Republic of Moldova was one of fifteen states to emerge from the dissolution of the Soviet Union. With weak historical legacy of statehood, deteriorating economy and serious national divisions, the young state lacked many of the prerequisites deemed necessary for successful democratization. From the very beginning of independence, Moldova became the battleground of Romanianists, propagating for the Romanian character of Moldova’s majority population, and Moldovanists, who viewed the people as a separate nation. In the literature on democracy and democratization, a divided nation is singled out as a serious threat to statehood and democratization efforts alike. Without a nation in place it is generally understood that democracy cannot take root. Nevertheless, Moldova in a few years time managed to make considerable progress on its path towards democracy. A main theme of the dissertation is thus the issue of national division and how it has affected political developments in general and democracy in specific. This picture is then further expanded by including close analysis of political support. The dissertation contributes to discussions about how nation and democracy goes together in transitional states with no legacy of either of them. The analysis shows that national division in Moldova works on different levels. While political actors often seek support from the electorate according to their positions on the nation, national identity by itself does not suffice to explain differences in political support. Instead other aspects, such as generational values, degree of urbanity and level of education, play a much larger role. Democracy, as a platform where different political ideas and ambitions may form, can both complicate transitions since it provides opportunities for conflicts, but democracy also holds the prospects to find ways to resolve disagreements. In the long run, this carries the seed of consolidation of both democracy and nation alike.

Abstract:
On August 27 1991, the international public opinion acknowledges the birth of the Republic of Moldova, which has represented two-thirds of the Romanian province of Bessarabia until 1941. During the history, Principality of Moldova is parting of the ways of three cultures: Slavic, Latin and Eastern; three great religions: Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim; three populations: Slavic, Latin and Turkish; and three ideologies: Pan-Slavism, Pan-Turkism and pan-Latin. Therefore, over the centuries, the Principality of Moldova has continuously handled these Great Powers and ideologies to keep its national identity. Nowadays, Moldova is still able to pursue between CIS and EU policies and between East and West geopolitical situation. In the first part of the thesis, we study the origin, toponyms and borders of Bessarabia, and we characterize the interest of the Great Powers for this territory. For it we describe, the wars and peace negotiations, starting with the Russo-Turkish war until the period of Bessarabia under the tsarist rule. Moreover, we treated the period of Bessarabia during the First World War, but also the creation of the Moldavian Democratic Republic, describing the process of foundation the USSR and its impact on the evolution of the post-Stalin Soviet Moldova. Finally, we studied the nationality question and the concepts like the "nation", the "nationalism", the "denationalization", the "Russification", the collectivism", the "moldovenism" etc...The Second Part starts with questions about the Moldovan national identity and the outbreaks of regional conflicts. We raise the issue of the separatist minorities of Gagauzia and Transnistria, which do not accept the sovereignty of Moldova. The Tiraspol regime is a totalitarian and oppressive regime, which must be removed by the action of external factors. Moreover, we study the creation of the CIS and GUAM and the involvement of the OSCE, EU, Russia, Ukraine and Romania in the negotiation process for the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. Finally, we discuss the possibilities of how cans the "federalization" and "regionalization" solves the ethnic conflicts in Moldova. In conclusion, we answer to the questions dealing about the territory and the Moldovan population

The work of Ethnology of the Gagauz village of Bălgarevo. The identity of the Bulgarian Gagauz represents the ethnogenesis and hypotheses about the origin of the Gagauz. The author interprets the ethnic identity of the Bulgarian Gagauz from a village in the northeastern part of Bulgaria. Based on the outputs of field return research, empirical data and through the projection of the actors themselves, it identifies the basic characteristics of Gagauz identity: origin, language, religion and tradition. The author describes the symbols and signs important for the community itself and answers the question of whether it is possible to label the current Bulgarian Gagauze as an ethnic group, how they identified themselves and on the basis of which attributes. The space is given by the ongoing revitalization changes against the background of new economic and socio-cultural processes. The work is supplemented by case studies and research reflection.
