Abstract:
Within the discourse on contemporary, post-Taylorist working life, production games and simulations are widely accepted as tools to facilitate learning and communication in organizations. We suggest that research programs dealing with production games can be seen as lying between two typical positions. Insiders — any significant group that proposes that simulations are useful — argue that they are fair representations of work practices, and that they hold specific qualities. Outsiders — researchers seeking to understand how simulations work in action — reject these kinds of 3.. priori statements, claiming that it is not meaningful to express any of the qualities of simulations prior to the simulation situation without succumbing to mythologizing simulations. This paper presents a study, undertaken from an outsider perspective, of a simulation game used in Sweden. We suggest that simulation games are complex social interactions carrying a considerable, albeit not yet fully exploited, potential for learning. The outline of the simulation favored the use of recently developed shop floor practices over old practices, and the explanation for the success of the new practices was often interpreted in terms of technical aspects of the production process. Observations and interviews indicate that research from an insider perspective tends to underestimate the emergent character of the simulations and how the game can be a vehicle for discipline and the creation of dysfunctional patterns in workgroups as well as learning. In summary, the outsider perspective could, as in this study, provide alternative perspectives on simulations, providing new insights and ideas, for research as well as practice.

Abstract:
AbstractScholars from the recent ‘practice turn’ in International Relations have urged us to rethink the international realm in terms of practices. The principal exponents of the turn, Emanuel Adler and Vincent Pouliot, have refurbished Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice to produce their own account of international practices. In a review of the practice turn, Chris Brown has argued that Bourdieu’s notion of practice shares basic affinities with Aristotle’s concept of praxis. While practice turn scholars may not adhere to a rigid canon of thought, they seem to share an Aristotelian conception of praxis. This reading of the turn to practice, though plausible, captures one part of the story. The central thesis of the present article is that instead of one there are two, distinctive conceptions of practice – Aristotelian and Wittgensteinian – and therefore two distinctive ways in which the character of international practices might be understood. More concretely, the aim is to show that the conception of international practices, rooted in Wittgenstein’s view of practices as language-games, can be particularly illuminating to all those who seek to understand international relations.

Abstract:
Abstract. Current discussions about a practice turn in human geography raise questions about whether discourse analytical approaches are focusing too strongly on symbolic representations. However, practice-theoretical conceptions privilege the analysis of everyday practices, discussing issues of embodiment and materiality. Following the considerations of Ludwig Wittgenstein, we assume certain connections between these two fields of study and explore the links between discourse and practice theory by employing the Wittgensteinian concepts of language-games and rule-following. Focussing on the discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe and the practice theory of Schatzki, we show to what extend both theories are informed by Wittgenstein's work and can be seen as different types of language-games analyses. We highlight the similarities and discuss the differences in the basic interests of these theories. Finally, we introduce an integrative „Wittgensteinian approach“ that is illustrated by two empirical examples of geographical inquiry – practices of a new rurality and rap-music in stigmatized banlieus.

Abstract:
The U.S. Air Force invented a calibration technique that allows one person to perform multiple, mechanical end-to-end calibrations of structural dynamics measurement systems. In Order to define the vibrations and acoustics environment, often an aircraft or engine structural health monitoring system collects airframe or engine structural integrity data. A recommended practice is to perform an end-to-end mechanical calibration of the system. This means a full calibration of instrumentation from the physical input to the transducer to the output where the analog or digital signal is normally analyzed. It is difficult to stimulate mounted and embedded transducers with a known physical input, especially strain gages bonded to a structure. This new technique uses a remote control structural exciter (RCSE) to stimulate transducers in structures, with a measurable input level, and the output signal is communicated to the data storage device of the structural health monitoring system. The Air Force demonstrated this patented technique by using accelerometers in the laboratory. This paper investigates this new technique to evaluate and calibrate strain gages mounted on structure. A reference piezoelectric strain gage measures the input. A typical system may include dynamic strain gages connected to a battery operated data acquisition system. This paper describes the invention and looks at potential field applications to insure data integrity of strain data in structural health monitoring data acquisition systems on aging commercial and military vehicles. Also, the paper describes a planned design of experiments to evaluate the use of remote control structural exciters for mechanical end-to-end calibration of strain gages in measurement systems.

Abstract:
Background: Food-borne disease outbreaks remain a major global health problem, and cross-contamination from raw meat is a major cause in developed countries due to inadequate handling. The goal of this study was to assess the poultry shop personnel's knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in the selected districts of Bangladesh. Methods: 103 poultry shop personnel were involved in this cross-sectional study. Results: A significant association was observed between the poultry shop personnel and the knowledge (p<0.05), attitudes (p<0.05), and practices (p<0.05) of safe meat-handling. The 68.3% of poultry shop personnel had good, 26.9% had moderate, while only 4.8% of poultry shop personnel had poor knowledge about hygiene practices. The 5.8% of poultry shop personnel showed poor, 19.2% showed moderate and 75% of poultry shop personnel showed good attitude towards hygiene practices. But the poultry shop personnel 36.5% had poor, 44.2% had moderate and only 20% showed good practice of hygiene practices. The knowledge, attitude and practice Mean±SD score of poultry shop personnel was 7.38±2.04, 7.87±2.24 and 4.41±2.38 respectively, indicating that poultry shop personnel had good knowledge and attitude but poor practice. We also found that 42% of poultry shops and poultry shop personnel had maintained totally unhygienic workplace, 56% had moderately hygienic, and while only 2% poultry shops and poultry shop personnel had maintained fully hygienic workplace. Further, linear regression analysis revealed that KAP levels have been significantly associated with age, education, and the majority of knowledge, attitudes, and practice related questions (p<0.05).Conclusions: Public health awareness about safe poultry meat handling and hygiene among poultry shop personnel, in general, should be at the front burner.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article addresses the issue of media discourse hybridization, the latter being the result of discourse-and-genre transgression and the source of new discursive practices, particularly, infotainment. The growing demands of society for information and the increasing worldwide popularity of humorous programs (especially stand-up comedies) have triggered the emergence of a unique media product – The Jim Jefferies Show. The salient feature of the talk show is that its host and producer is a famous stand-up comedian. Jim Jefferies’ versatile, controversial, belief-challenging and thought-provoking satirical comedy has won him admiration and respect across the USA and abroad. Results. Adopting an interdisciplinary, integrated approach, we explore the problem of media discourse technologization and game-ization. The research is based on the premises of theory of discourse, pragma- and sociolinguistic discourse studies, critical discourse analysis, philosophy of discourse and philosophy of play and games. We argue that incorporating stand-up technologies, also referred to as attractions, into informational discourse brings about a powerful discursive shift and comprehensive hybridization manifested in multiple interdiscursivity (with a variety of types and kinds of discourse involved: informational and entertaining, institutional [status bound] and personal [personality bound], existential and habitual; critical, political, comical; simulative), multiple destination (along with information-offering [news] and entertainment [fun], opinion, critique, subversion, shock) and multiple functions (informational, orientational, that of solidarity vs. agonistic, actional, axiological and “ludenic”). Conclusion. The new discursive practice as an extension of media and man, homo ludens, meets demands and values of the consumer society, agrees with the postmodernist Zeitgeist and reveals a carnivalesque mediachronotope.

Ligon, Victoria K. "Shop More, Buy Less: A Qualitative Investigation Into Consumer Decisions That Lead To Food Waste In U.S. Households." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/332880.

Full text
Abstract:
Estimates suggest that 40% of the food grown in the United States ends up in landfills. Household losses are the highest contributor to volume of waste overall, and individual households are estimated to discard around 15% of their total acquired food inventory. Consumers are generally waste averse and a vast majority have been shown to object to wasting food in particular, yet almost all consumers discard a substantial volume of potentially edible food each year. This exploratory qualitative study sought to uncover underlying psychological mechanisms behind this discrepancy between attitude and behavior by exploring the decision-making processes that consumers engage in as they acquire, prepare, consume and discard food. By exploring the patterns of thinking that shape household provisioning practices through an initial in-depth interview, a two-week long household food diary and a follow-up interview with 17 diverse consumers, a grounded theory emerged to explain this counter-intuitive behavior pattern. Extending research from behavioral economics and decision making literature, data from this study suggests the following: 1) people evaluate cost of goods based on incomplete value estimations that fail to account for the costs associated with discarding potentially edible foods; 2) costs associated with the act of shopping are salient and encourage less frequent provisioning trips; 3) people do not adequately account for costs associated with overbuying and storing food; and 4) consumer strategies aimed at maximize efficiency in food acquisition through less frequent shopping trips may actually result in increased inefficiency in the form of greater waste and higher overall cost of goods. Based on emergent findings, a strategy for waste avoidance is presented along with managerial implications.

Tembe, Cristina Raul Cesar Augusto. "Exploring professional development interventions for improving the teaching practice of primary school teachers." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24096.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the independence of Mozambique in 1975 teacher education and teacher continuing professional development (TCPD) have been a matter of concern for the Ministry of Education (MINED) and teachers. Both the MINED as employer and the teachers individually have permanently been looking for models and ways to upgrade their academic and professional qualifications levels. The constraints faced by Mozambique are similar to those faced by other sub-Saharan African countries since their independence due to the increased pressure for more attention to all levels of education, with particular emphasis on primary education. Although TCPD is usually seen as part of the overall Strategy for Teacher Education (Ministry and Education and Culture, 2004), this scenario privileges initial teacher education since there are many unqualified teachers facilitating learning. The main challenge of this study was to investigate the practices of primary school teachers in Grades 1 and 2 through a participatory action research (PAR) in a study titled Exploring Professional Development Intervention for Improving the Teaching Practices of Primary School Teache. Mixed methods research was used, namely quantitative and qualitative methods. A quantitative method was used during the baseline study which consisted of questionnaires administrated to 1 028 teachers from six provinces in the country. Qualitative research was used with five practitioner-researchers (PRs) in one school. Each PR was approached as a single case study. The findings of this PAR indicate that, on the one hand, the teachers are aware of the need for more academic and pedagogical qualifications, and on the other hand, of the individual responsibility they have. They believe that progression in their careers should be a credible procedure that recognises the TCPD programmes they have attended. The teachers are of the opinion that the MINED should formally recognise the TCPD by allocating credit points to teachers. Although the self-directed professional development (SDPD) model used in this study was time consuming, it has revealed that TCPD can provide effective results when with the appropriate support and follow-up of methods of facilitating the learning of reading and writing skills in Grades 1 and 2. The study involved all teachers appointed to Grade 1 in 2007, and continued with the same teachers until 2010. During this period the teachers were appointed to facilitate learning in Grades 1 and 2. Notwithstanding the fact that the PRs were only from 2 of the 7 grades provided in primary education, the study revealed the advantage of whole school professional development. The study took into consideration the Mozambican school context and calendar. For instance, the PRs were certified by the latest model of teacher education (10+2 teacher education programme) provided by the MINED. In addition, the meetings were carried out during the period scheduled for the planning of pedagogical practices and TCPD programmes. Throughout the study the constant issue that emerged was the need for a paradigm shift in TCPD. Providers of TCPD need to introduce changes in the way they view primary school teachers and confer on them the responsibility for their individual continuous professional development. Action Research could be the new research paradigm used by providers and teachers to improve their work, understand learners’ learning problems and find the appropriate solutions to improve achievement. The findings of this PAR both contribute to understanding the teachers’ views with respect to the TCPD programmes being provided, and offer the option for a new paradigm for TCPD. In this regard the current providers of such programmes can also consider the school principal and the deputy principal as fundamental facilitators of TCPD through a SDPD model.
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2011.
Humanities Education
unrestricted

Babb, Jeffry. "TOWARDS A REFLECTIVE-AGILE LEARNING MODEL AND METHOD IN THE CASE OF SMALL-SHOP SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: EVIDENCE FROM AN ACTION RESEARCH STUDY." VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1763.

Full text
Abstract:
The ascension and use of agile and lightweight software development methods have challenged extant software design and development paradigms; this is especially notable in the case of small-team and small-shop software development. In this dissertation, a Reflective-Agile Learning Method and Methodology (RALMM) for small-shop software development, is proposed to enhance communication and learning in the use of agile methods. The purpose of the inquiry in this dissertation pertains to: the nature of the professional practice of small team software development; the implications of the epistemology of Reflective Practice has for the professional practice of small-team software development; and whether the introduction of Reflective Practice to an extant agile methodology improves process, productivity and professional confidence for a small development team. This dissertation uses Dialogical Action Research (Mårtensson and Lee 2004), or Dialogical AR, a qualitative and interpretive research approach, to iteratively develop and refine the Reflective-Agile Learning Model and Method (RALMM). The proposed model and method also considers Hazzan and Tomayko’s (2002, 2004, and 2005) synthesis of Schön’s (1983, 1987) Reflective Practice and Extreme Programming (XP). RALMM is shaped by Argyris and Schön’s theories of practice (1974) and Organizational Learning (1978, 1996) and Schön’s ancillary work on generative metaphor (1979) and frames (Schön et al. 1994). The RALMM artifact was developed in a Dialogical AR Partnership using Lee’s (2007) framework for synthesizing design science and action research. The development and use of RALMM facilitated theorizing on the role of Reflective Practice in the successful use of agile methods. To assist in interpretation and analysis, the data collected during Dialogical AR cycles are analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’s (1998) Grounded Theory as a mode of analysis to guide in the coding and analysis of qualitative evidence from the research. As a result of this research, RALMM improved the practitioners’ processes and productivity. Furthermore, RALMM helped to establish, formalize and reinforce a team learning system for the continued development of the practitioners’ professional repertoire. Additionally, the iterative development of RALMM provides a basis for theorizing on Reflective Practice as an epistemology, paradigm, metaphor and frame of reference for the professional practice of small-shop software development.

Abstract:
碩士
淡江大學
大眾傳播學系碩士班
101
The modern consumer field and diet community are changing with the increasing popularity of organic food, particularly taste interpretation and distinction buildup by cultural intermediaries. Cultural intermediaries not only carry over the symbols such as memory of the times and cultural atmosphere but also create new meanings and values for food by establishing the platform for creative events. This study analyzes the emerging sellers of organic food to investigate how to create alternative merchandize field, create new food culture, and use the imagery creation to inspire consumers by being the role the cultural intermediaries distributing various discourses. This study is composed by horizontal perspective to reveal the merchandize filed of emerging cultural intermediaries. Bourdieu’s field theory is applied to study organic food as cultural field and “Wang''s organic shop” is the chosen case to investigate how cultural intermediaries construct the merchandize filed by social media such as blog and interviewing with organic farmers. In addition, the experience of “working travelers” is used to understand how this food community was funded. By discovering the creation and reinforcement of the filed of organic food merchandize, the cultural production in food space is re-thought. It is found that the intermediaries in the filed of organic food merchandize create different symbolic order and signify organic food purchase by differentiating merchandize atmospheres. The intermediaries also gather the recognitions from consumers through the activities of food community. It is also observed that the intermediaries reinforce their social status and pursue newer goal in the filed of organic food merchandize by “vitality discourse”, “taste style”, and “inducing of food communities”. Moreover, the “spontaneous physical practice” is the critical factor which makes the intermediaries dominate organic food space. The intermediaries not only bring out the food revolution, but also arouse the consumption conscious. It is discovered that blog is not only the taste community distributing information but also the intangible assets of organic food network. The interactions among people such as knowledge transfer and manpower trade are the results from various capital accumulations. This consuming field also builds up “physical identity” and “pleasure practice” (in terms of non-money trading) for people by exchanging life experience in social activities of food. This study witnesses the food helps us see through our bodies and stimulate people to make effort for the food. Last but not least, food communities connect travelers around the world. People create close connections among themselves and regions by “physical traveling”. The modern food revolution brings opportunities for us to introspect how to signify food field in practice and maintain subjective consciousness while pursuing scenario experience.

At all educational levels, on-site lecturing had to switch instantaneously to an online mode of instruction. This transition was so straightforward, that the argument could be made for online education to become a permanent fixture, particularly if it is more efficient, cheaper, and more effective than traditional education. Extensive meta-analyses, however, show that most online teaching practices do not lead to better educational outcomes than the on-site alternatives. Worse yet, the traditional face-to-face mode of lecturing is ineffective in the absence of personalized interactions. The proposed solutions are offered by artificial intelligence research, including virtual reality, intelligent tutoring systems, and serious games—solutions that have so far not been extensively implemented in practice. The current health crisis provides our educational professionals with an opportunity to rethink their teaching practices and focus on applying these promising new alternatives.

Abstract:
Nash equilibrium is a popular solution concept for solving imperfect-information games in practice. However, it has a major drawback: it does not preclude suboptimal play in branches of the game tree that are not reached in equilibrium. Equilibrium refinements can mend this issue, but have experienced little practical adoption. This is largely due to a lack of scalable algorithms.Sparse iterative methods, in particular first-order methods, are known to be among the most effective algorithms for computing Nash equilibria in large-scale two-player zero-sum extensive-form games. In this paper, we provide, to our knowledge, the first extension of these methods to equilibrium refinements. We develop a smoothing approach for behavioral perturbations of the convex polytope that encompasses the strategy spaces of players in an extensive-form game. This enables one to compute an approximate variant of extensive-form perfect equilibria. Experiments show that our smoothing approach leads to solutions with dramatically stronger strategies at information sets that are reached with low probability in approximate Nash equilibria, while retaining the overall convergence rate associated with fast algorithms for Nash equilibrium. This has benefits both in approximate equilibrium finding (such approximation is necessary in practice in large games) where some probabilities are low while possibly heading toward zero in the limit, and exact equilibrium computation where the low probabilities are actually zero.

Abstract:
The Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack has become widespread in networks nowadays. The MITM attack would cause serious information leakage and result in tremendous loss to users. Previous work applies game theory to analyze the MITM attack-defense problem and computes the optimal defense strategy to minimize the total loss. It assumes that all defenders are cooperative and the attacker know defenders' strategies beforehand. However, each individual defender is rational and may not have the incentive to cooperate. Furthermore, the attacker can hardly know defenders' strategies ahead of schedule in practice. To this end, we assume that all defenders are self-interested and model the MITM attack-defense scenario as a simultaneous-move game. Nash equilibrium is adopted as the solution concept which is proved to be always unique. Given the impracticability of computing Nash equilibrium directly, we propose practical adaptive algorithms for the defenders and the attacker to learn towards the unique Nash equilibrium through repeated interactions. Simulation results show that the algorithms are able to converge to Nash equilibrium strategy efficiently.

Abstract:
Commercial Schmidt-Boelter heat flux gages are always calibrated by using a radiative heat flux source where convection is minimized. This is because one can establish a reliable link to a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) calibration standard. To the authors’ knowledge, no NIST traceable link exists for convective heat flux calibration. When heat flux gages are used in typical applications, convection is often not negligible. It has been common practice to assume that the sensitivity coefficient supplied by the manufacturer also applies for convective environments. This assumption is believed to be incorrect. If incorrect, this would result in uncertainties larger than typically reported (e.g., ±3%). This paper analyzes the heat transfer from an idealized Schmidt-Boelter heat flux gage. The analysis shows that the theoretical sensitivity coefficients in purely radiative and convective environments are not the same and, in fact, differ by the emissivity of the gage surface. The implication of this difference is that the accuracy specification supplied by the manufacturer (typically ± 3%) is not correct for measurement applications where convection is not negligible.

Abstract:
The research on the dynamic strain of drum brakes is of great significance in performance evaluation, structure optimization and fatigue prediction. Based on current research of strain experiments and measuring technology, a new test procedure is proposed to investigate strain and temperature information of a working drum. Wireless data acquisition system and high-temperature strain gauges are applied. The strain-time and temperature-time curves are studied on the conditions of emergency brake and continuous brake. A tribological and thermo-mechanical analysis are conducted by using software ABAQUS. Results show that the strain is uneven when the drum contacts different zones of friction plates. Seasonal variation is another feature and a set of four wave crests repeats during the rotation. Meanwhile, thermal effect is proved important to strain. The simulation results coincide well with experiments, proving that this method provides a practical way to verify the calculation. The study also lays the foundation for the following fatigue analysis and optimization design.

Abstract:
The Traveling Tournament Problem is a well-known benchmark problem in tournament timetabling, which asks us to design a schedule of home/away games of n teams (n is even) under some feasibility requirements such that the total traveling distance of all the n teams is minimized. In this paper, we study TTP-2, the traveling tournament problem where at most two consecutive home games or away games are allowed, and give an effective algorithm for n/2 being odd. Experiments on the well-known benchmark sets show that we can beat previously known solutions for all instances with n/2 being odd by an average improvement of 2.66%. Furthermore, we improve the theoretical approximation ratio from 3/2+O(1/n) to 1+O(1/n) for n/2 being odd, answering a challenging open problem in this area.

Abstract:
Coordination on an optimal policy between independent learners in fully cooperative stochastic games is difficult due to problems such as relative overgeneralization and miscoordination. Most state-of-the-art algorithms apply fusion heuristics on agents' optimistic and average rewards, by which coordination between agents can be achieved implicitly. However, such implicit coordination faces practical issues such as tedious parameter-tuning in real world applications. The lack of an explicit coordination mechanism may also lead to a low likelihood of coordination in problems with multiple optimal policies. Based on the necessary conditions of an optimal policy, we propose the explicitly coordinated policy iteration (EXCEL) algorithm which always forces agents to coordinate by comparing the agents' separated optimistic and average value functions. We also propose three solutions for deep reinforcement learning extensions of EXCEL. Extensive experiments in matrix games (from 2-agent 2-action games to 5-agent 20-action games) and stochastic games (from 2-agent games to 5-agent games) show that EXCEL has better performance than the state-of-the-art algorithms (such as faster convergence and better coordination).
