The encryption algorithm written by Egyptian Taher ElGamal computes discrete logarithms with elements of a finite group G Cyclical. These elements have properties that during the study Chapter 1. Knowing the definitions and some properties studied, we can define and compute discrete logarithms, using knowledge of arithmetic and congruence of Remains and Theorem Remainder of Chinese. We will study public key algorithms, in particular the algorithm written by ElGamal, seeking to understand the diffculties presented by it and show its applications in the field of cryptography. We present a sequence of activities, aimed at students of the first grade of high school, targeting the learning of some subjects covered at work.
O algoritmo de criptografia escrito pelo egípcio Taher ElGamal calcula logaritmos discretos com elementos de um Grupo Cíclico finito G. Esses elementos possuem propriedades que estudaremos no decorrer do capítulo 1. Conhecendo as definições e algumas propriedades estudadas, poderemos definir e calcular logaritmos discretos, utilizando conhecimentos da Aritmética dos Restos e Congruências, bem como o Teorema Chinês dos Restos. Vamos estudar algoritmos de chave pública, em particular o algoritmo escrito por ElGamal, buscando entender as dificuldades apresentadas por ele e mostrar suas aplicações no campo da Criptografia. Apresentaremos uma sequencia de atividades, voltadas para estudantes do primeiro ano do Ensino Médio, visando o aprendizado de alguns assuntos abordados no trabalho.

Abstract:

A mix-net is a cryptographic protocol based on public key cryptography which enables untraceable communication through a collection of nodes. One important application is electronic voting where it enables the construction of systems which satisfies many voting security requirements, including verifiability of correct execution. Verificatum is an implementation of a mix-net by Douglas Wikström. This report concerns the implementation of a verifier and evaluation of the implementation manual for the Verificatum mix-net. The purpose of the document is to enable third parties to convince themselves that the mixnet has behaved correctly without revealing any secret information. This implementation is a simple version of the verifier using the document and some test vectors generated by the mix-net. The document contains all information but there are still some possibilities for further clarification in order to make it comprehensible to a larger audience.

Ces systemes sont modelises par le formalisme des fonctions enveloppes et analyses par diverses techniques de spectroscopie optique. Les relations de dispersion des sous-bandes de valence, pour un vecteur d'onde de propagation dans le plan des couches, sont calculees de maniere exacte. Le transfert de probabilite de presence d'un puits vers l'autre, que peut engendrer l'augmentation du vecteur d'onde k perpendiculaire ou l'application d'une contrainte mecanique externe, est mis en evidence. Nous effectuons une comparaison, tenant compte des effets excitoniques, entre ces resultats theoriques et les mesures optiques

Abstract:

Apresentamos neste trabalho nove gazais de Jalal Uddin Rumi (1207-1273), fundador da Ordem dos Dervixes Rodopiantes de Konya, na Turquia, traduzidos diretamente do persa para o português a partir de uma perspectiva interdisciplinar que envolve História, Dança, Literatura e Tradutologia. Temas centrais da sua poesia, como raqs (dança) e samá (audição), são tomados pela problemática da fusão de seus significados, realizada pelos estudiosos e tradutores. Retoma-se o contexto histórico peculiar de emergência, reiteração e atualização semântica dos termos, pautado pelo debate islâmico sobre a música e a dança, tanto em âmbito secular como religioso, sobretudo entre os séculos IX e XIV. Os autores envolvidos nesse debate discorreram sobre a diferenciação entre dança e audição mística e, a partir da defesa de Alghazali (1058-1111), um novo sentido foi conferido à dança e pautou a sua licitude até o nosso tempo, embora com retrocessos e restrições que variaram conforme o local e a época. Aqui examinamos a noção e terminologia específica utilizada por Rumi em seu diálogo poético com os autores do debate, propondo uma metodologia tradutória focada na metáfora da dança e sensível ao processo da audição mística.
This thesis presents nine gazals of Jalal Uddin Rumi (1207-1273), founder of Whirling Dervishes Order of Konya in Turkey, translated from Persian directly to Portuguese in an interdisciplinary perspective involving History, Dance, Literature and Traductology. The conceptual fusion of Raqs (dancing) and Sama (hearing) - central themes of his poetry which was always done by scholars and translators is discussed herein. We also present and investigate the emergence of these concepts in the Islamic controversy regarding music and dance, in secular as in religious spheres, particularly between the 9th and 14th centuries. Authors who discussed the theme pointed out differences between dancing and mystical hearing; since the defense of Alghazali (1058- 1111) a new meaning was attributed to dance, which has, up until now, been accepted, regardless of setbacks and constraints in different places and times. The specific notion and terminology of dance in Rumis poetry is analyzed in the light of his own dialogue with the authors of this debate. We propose a translation methodology focusing on the dance metaphor which be according to the mystical hearing process.

This work studies the idyllic poetry of ibn zaidun and al-mutamid ibn abbad, two of the most famous andalusian poets (statistic lists). Abstract:

Il s’agit dans ce travail d’analyser le Livre des illuminations de Gamal Ghitany. Ce livre occupe une place particulière aussi bien dans l’œuvre de Ghitany que dans la littérature arabe. Cette particularité se manifeste à la fois sur la forme et le contenu du récit. Sur le plan de la forme, l’auteur choisit l’écriture aphoristique pour révéler l’originalité de son expérience. Sur le plan narratif, l’auteur mêle délibérément sa vie, celle de son père, l’histoire de l’Egypte et celle d’une partie de l’islam. A cela s’ajoutent des références quasi-permanentes du coran. Ce qui offre au Livre des illuminations plusieurs « entrées ». De manière plus concrète, l’auteur revient sur son passé pour le ressusciter explorant une vie dans toutes ses dimensions : personnelle, sociale, politique et religieuse. Après une période de tourments, marquée par la mort de son père, il décide de se lancer dans une quête intérieure pour revisiter sa propre existence, se pencher sur ce que fut la vie de ce père modeste et digne, et analyser l’évolution de leurs rapports au fil des années. Le Livre des illuminations nous offre plus qu’une simple autobiographie. L’auteur s’interroge au delà de celle-ci sur la mort, le temps qui passe et l’oubli
This thesis analyses the Illumination’s book of Gamal Ghitany. This book occupied particular place in the also through the Ghitany’s work and Arab’s literature. This particularity show oneself on plenty the narrative’s form and contents. On the narrative, the authors select the aphoristic writing to reveal this originality experience. On the narrative, the author mingle this life, that of this father, the Egypt’s history and that of Islam’s party. At that adjourn coran’s almost permanents references. What offer Illuminations book several entering. In concrete way, the author comes back on his past for to bring to life again exploring a life in all his dimensions: personal, social, politic and religious. After a period torture’s period, showed by the father’s death, he decide to launch for a interior quest to revisit his own existence, to lean on that was this modest and worthy father’s life, and to analyse the evolution of their proceeds with years. The Illumination’s book us offer more that simple autobiography. The author question’s himself beyond that of on the death, the time that pass and Forgetfulness

Ce travail présente l’élaboration en épitaxie par jets moléculaires d’hétérostructures GaAlAs-GaAs pour transistors et circuits intégrés bipolaires. La caractérisation du matériau et des hétérointerfaces est réalisée notamment par cathodoluminescence, mesures de durées de vie, et photoluminescence de puits quantiques. De très forts dopages de type p dans GaAs avec du béryllium ont été réalisés (p=2x1020cm-3). L’incorporation du dopant est discutée. Différentes structures pour le composant et l’intégration ont été épitaxiées : structures pour phototransistor à forts gains en courant (β ≥ 3000) ; structures à double hétérojonction et faible tension d’offset (∆VCE = 30 mV) ; structures à hétérojonction Ga0,72Al0,28As/Ga0,99Be0,01As et résistance de base ultra-faible (RB = 140 Ω/□).

Abstract:

El objetivo general del presente trabajo de título es la implementación de un sistema de votación electrónica apropiado para una votación local a pequeña escala. Además, este trabajo analiza las condiciones y supuestos razonables bajo los cuales tal elección puede ser llevada a cabo exitosamente. En este trabajo se estudian los mecanismos criptográficos adecuados para implementar un sistema de votación correcto, verificable y cuyos votos sean privados. El sistema implementado cumple con las características de seguridad de un sistema de votación electrónica, es práctico y puede ser usado en votaciones de pequeña escala. Este sistema considera la existencia de varias autoridades electorales, las cuales necesitan cooperar para que la elección sea exitosa, y solamente la colusión de la mayoría de ellas puede poner en riesgo la privacidad de los votantes. Se realizaron diversas votaciones de prueba, las que ilustran como el sistema implementado es capaz de detectar tanto alteraciones de los votos, como autoridades que traten de alterar el proceso eleccionario. El sistema es eficiente y transparente y entrega resultados precisos en forma rápida y oportuna. El proceso completo es universalmente verificable, desde la generación de las claves de encriptación que se usaran durante la elección, hasta el cómputo final, pasando por la verificación de la correctitud de los votos emitidos. Se concluye que es factible implementar un sistema de votación electrónica práctico, seguro y eficiente con requisitos simples: conectividad de red entre los participantes, mecanismos de comunicación consistente de mensajes (broadcast) entre las autoridades y observadores externos, e infraestructura para manejar claves públicas y privadas de los votantes. Finalmente se entregan recomendaciones para extender el sistema a elecciones de gran escala.

Abstract:

The Egyptian authoritarian regime is a mammoth machine created and headed by President Hosni Mubarak as an instrument for the exercise of his own power. His ability to influence every facet of the character of Egypt lies in his previous career experience, the involvement in politics of his immediate family, his commitment to unpopular but lucrative foreign policies, and the bureaucratic obstacle course he created for opposition entities to navigate. Through persistent efforts to prepare himself for national leadership prior to gaining power, then to consolidate his power in the institutions of Egypt, Mubarak has built a state organization with a solid legal basis for suppression of opposition. Using an extensive system of patronage, Mubarak maintains elite support for his continued control of the state. Sustained adherence to the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty brings Egypt significant foreign aid that compensates for some of its economic shortfalls, and affords Mubarak the opportunity to serve as a regional partner in advancing the Middle East Peace Process, reinforcing Mubarak's fitness to rule on the international stage. The maintenance of a pervasive and fiercely loyal security apparatus also gives Mubarak the ability to disrupt any internal opposition activity before it can fully mobilize a call for change. The manner in which Mubarak crafted a democratic facade to cover his authoritarian regime is an artful nod to the Third Wave of democratization; he recognized that to remain in power in the 21st century, Egypt must be perceived as democratic in nature by the international community. That election irregularities, policy barriers to political participation, and single-party control of the legislature prevent the creation of a truly representative government is an important but difficult to prove fact that Mubarak's facade democratic motions are designed to disguise. It is prudent to consider how Mubarak's exit from Egyptian politics will affect the authoritarian system he has built and managed since 1981. The likely accession of his son, Gamal, will keep most power guarantors in place, but the globalizing forces of this century will require a fresh approach to managing domestic, international, and global relations.

A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Stewart Associate Professor and Graduate Director, Department of Biology Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the human VMAT1 gene (SLC18A1) have been associated with schizophrenia in three different populations: Han Chinese, Western European and Japanese. Effects of these mutations on transport function of the hVMAT1 protein have not been reported. The goal of this study was to investigate functional and biochemical differences in human VMAT1 proteins with a threonine or proline at amino acid position 4 (Thr4Pro) and a serine or threonine at position 98 (Ser98Thr). COS1 cells were transfected with variant SNPs coding for 4Thr/98Ser, 4Pro/98Ser, or 4Thr98Thr. Western blotting demonstrated robust over expression of the genes and no differences in electrophoretic mobility of the proteins. Maximal transport of serotonin by the VMAT1 protein with 4Pro/98Ser was less than that of the 4Thr/98Ser or the 4Thr/98Thr. Response of the 4Pro/Ser98 to the VMAT inhibitor reserpine was lower than that of the 4Thr/98Thr. These findings suggest mechanisms for human VMAT1 links to schizophrenia.

Notre récit commence dans l’Egypte nationaliste des années 1950. Le coup d’Etat mené par Gamal Abdel Nasser et le “Mouvement des Officiers Libres” ouvre la voie à une révolution politique, économique, et socioculturelle, au Caire et dans l’ensemble du monde arabe. Il met alors en place un puissant dispositif médiatique : il fonde la radio la Voix des Arabes, publie La Philosophie de la révolution, et fera très rapidement du journal Al-Ahram la langue de sa révolution. De la guerre de Suez en 1956, à l’union avec la Syrie en 1958, l’Egypte soutiendra alors tous les mouvements de libération nationale jusqu’à la “catastrophe” de 1967, qui signe l’arrêt de mort du nationalisme nassérien. Lorsque le nationalisme laïc n’a pas réussi à restituer la Palestine et la dignité arabe perdues, certains ont cru que c’est la religion qui le fera. Deux modèles antagonistes secouent alors le consensus des années 1960 : au “pétro-islam” saoudien s’oppose désormais un islam chiite inspiré par la Révolution islamique en Iran et prôné par le Hezbollah et son Secrétaire général Hassan Nasrallah. Les années 1980-1990 correspondent aussi à l’introduction des chaînes satellites dans le monde arabe ; au pouvoir mobilisateur de la radio des années 1950, se substitue la force de l’image de chaînes comme Al-Jazeera et Al-Manar. Ainsi, trois décennies après la dernière guerre israélo-arabe, la question de l’identité est exportée sur le front libanais : Nasrallah dit mener, en 2006, “la guerre de la nation contre l’ennemi sioniste”. Comment, à travers leur couverture de la révolution, de la guerre, de la défaite et de la victoire, les médias arabes ont-ils dit l’identité tout au long des soixante dernières années d’histoire ? Comment la radio, la presse écrite, la télévision satellitaire, mais aussi la chanson, les clips et les jeux vidéo ont-ils dit l’arabité? Qu’est-ce que “être arabe” dans le discours médiatique d’aujourd’hui et de quelles manières l’islam politique prôné par les médias contemporains reprend-t-il les anciennes thématiques du nationalisme nassérien ?
Our story starts in the nationalist Egypt of the 1950s. The military coup undertaken by Gamal Abdel Nasser and the “Free Officers Movement” paved the way for a political, economic and socio-cultural revolution in Egypt and the entire Arab world. Soon after, Nasser established a powerful multifaceted media apparatus: he founded The Voices of the Arabs radio station, published The Philosophy of the Revolution, while Al-Ahram was slowly becoming the “tongue” of his revolution. From the Suez crisis in 1956, until the union with Syria in 1958, Nasser’s Egypt supported all anti-colonial liberation movements in the Arab world, until the 1967 defeat that signed the death sentence of pan-Arab nationalism. When secular nationalism couldn’t resuscitate Palestine and the tarnished Arab dignity, some thought that religion could. Two antagonistic models shook the fragile consensus of the 1960s: a Saudi “petro-Islam”, and the more recently emerging Shiite Islam, inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and mainly promoted by Hezbollah and its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. The 1980s also correspond to the introduction of the first satellite channels in the Arab world: the power of images on channels like Al-Jazeera and Al-Manar began to substitute radio’s mobilizing discourse of the 1950s. Three decades after the last Arab-Israeli war, the question of Arab identity is exported to the Lebanese front: Hassan Nasrallah says he is leading, in 2006, “the nation’s war against the Zionist enemy”. How did Arab media, through their coverage of revolutions, wars, defeats and victories, take part in the mechanisms of construction of post-colonial identities? How did the radio, the print and the satellite media, the songs, the music clips and the video games all define what is being “an Arab” today? And in which ways, does today’s political Islam, promoted by contemporary media narratives, reclaim the old pan-Arab and nationalist themes?

This study will research one of the objectives of Maqāsid al- Sharī’ah (Objectives of the Islamic Law) namely Ḥifẓ al-Nasl better known as the protection of progeny as well as family planning. 1. Sharī’ah (Islamic Law) has provided the principles that govern any human activity and ensures protection of life, ease and pleasure. The Qur’ān and the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition) both emphasize flexibility and general principles and guidelines that may be applied to all areas of life. Thus, issues relating to marriage, protection of progeny, sexuality, and even contraception in Islām have also been accommodated in the Qur’ān and Sunnah. Moreover, contraception in relation to family planning have a long history in Islām and has significance within the broader Islamic ethos of marriage and sexuality. This study aims to sketch the historical development of Maqāsid al-Sharī’ah as well as its formulation and subsequent development.

Abstract:

In the mid-twentieth century Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser, along with President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana rose to international prominence as leaders and visionaries who were able to achieve political independence in their respective home countries while attempting to shape a destiny for Africa that did not involve Western imperialism. For Nasser's part, he first secured independence for Egypt, then turned his attention to the Middle East, but soon became as active in the politics of Sub Saharan Africa, also known as black Africa, as he was in the Arab world. This thesis explores Nasser's forays into Sub Saharan Africa during the period of decolonization on the continent and how his aspirations for Africa were equally a part of his political agenda that came to be known as Nasserism. Considering Nasser was the leader of the Third bloc, Egypt's fate was tied to Africa just as much as it was to the Middle East. Beyond the aspects of Nasser's involvement in Africa, this work also explores the active role Africans played in their quest for independence from European colonizers. Many African leaders during this time were as prominent and as shrewd as Nasser and were committed to establishing an anti-imperialist continent while developing modern African states based on the principles of Pan Africanism. While this occurred, new countries began to enter Africa and it became up to the African heads of state to determine how much involvement they wanted from these outsiders and at what cost. As these many dynamics played out in Africa, Pan Africanism was simultaneously occurring in the United States that linked black America's fate with Africa in movements that emphasized black nationalism and Third World political ideology.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the puzzle of why the level of discrimination against religious minorities was higher in Egypt than in Syria, and therefore why the transition from "Arab" nationalism to "re-Islamization" of politics was greater in the first country than in the second (at least prior its civil war). The answer is the different survival strategies used by these dictatorships in front of the emergence of a strong Islamist opposition that questioned the existence of these secular Arab regimes. In addition, these strategies depend on the congruence or not between the religious identity of the ruling elites and the majority of the population. When the elite in power have the same religious identity of the majority combined with an important Islamist challenge, the levels of religious discrimination will be high. When the elite-population identity does not match, or when the Islamist challenge is contained, religious discrimination will be smaller.
Esta tesis investiga la paradoja de por qué el nivel de discriminación contra las minorías cristianas árabes fue mayor en Egipto que en Siria, y por tanto por qué el paso del nacionalismo “árabe” a la “reislamización” de la política fue mayor en el primer país que en el segundo (hasta el comienzo de su Guerra Civil). La explicación se encuentra en las diferentes estrategias de supervivencia utilizadas por sus dictaduras ante la aparición de una fuerte oposición islamista que cuestionaba la existencia de los regímenes árabes seculares. La variación de estrategias se debe a su vez a la mayor o menor congruencia entre la identidad religiosa de las élites gobernantes y la mayoría de la población. Cuando la identidad religiosa población-elite coincide y se da un importante desafío islamista, la discriminación será alta. Cuando no coincide, o no se da el desafío islamista, la discriminación religiosa será menor.
