Abstract:
Mutual information and its causal variant, directed information, have been widely used to quantitatively characterize the performance of biological sensing and information transduction. However, once coupled with selection in response to decision-making, the sensing signal could have more or less evolutionary value than its mutual or directed information. In this work, we show that an individually sensed signal always has a better fitness value, on average, than its mutual or directed information. The fitness gain, which satisfies fluctuation relations (FRs), is attributed to the selection of organisms in a population that obtain a better sensing signal by chance. A new quantity, similar to the coarse-grained entropy production in information thermodynamics, is introduced to quantify the total fitness gain from individual sensing, which also satisfies FRs. Using this quantity, the optimizing fitness gain of individual sensing is shown to be related to fidelity allocations for individual environmental histories. Our results are supplemented by numerical verifications of FRs, and a discussion on how this problem is linked to information encoding and decoding.

Abstract:
Audio windowing is a front-end, or user interface, to an audio system with a real-time spatial sound back end. Complementing directionalization by a digital signal processor (DSP), gain adjustment is used to control the volume of the various mixels ([sound] mixing elements). Virtual gain can be synthesized from components derived from collective iconic size, mutual distance, orientation and directivity, and selectively enabled according to room-wise partitioning of sources across sinks. This paper describes a derivation of virtual gain, and outlines the deployment of these expressions in an audio windowing system.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we examine whether the disposition effect, the tendency to sell winners and hold losers, exists among U.S. equity mutual funds and how the disposition effect influences fund performance and particularly flows. We find that a significant fraction (32%) of all funds exhibit some degree of disposition behavior. These funds underperform funds that are not disposition prone by 4-6% per year. Moreover, we find that the disposition effect has a significant impact on future fund flows. Without controlling for performance, disposition-prone funds experience 2-3% less flows each quarter than other funds. The difference in flows is probably due to poor performance of such funds. However, even after controlling for performance and other factors that potentially influence flows, funds with a high disposition effect experience 0.7-2% less flows than funds without such behavior. Past research has found that funds with low tax overhang garner larger inflows. Though disposition-prone funds are likely to have a lower tax overhang because they sell their winners quickly, we find that fund flows to disposition-prone funds are smaller than flows to non-disposition oriented funds after controlling for tax overhang. These results suggest that performance and tax efficiency as well as tax overhang are all important to mutual fund investors.

This research examines two landmark negotiations between the United States and Mexico. The first involves the conflict over the shared hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico. The second analyzes the dispute over the shared waters of the Colorado River. For over seventy years, pursuing unilateral development, the U.S. and Mexico alternated between deadlock and confrontation in both cases. However, they were able to buck this trend in 2012, reaching two agreements. For the first time, the two sides have established a binational framework through which to co-develop and jointly manage these transboundary natural resources, as partners. This research explores how the negotiators shaped these agreements, and in what ways they contributed to the resolution of these long-standing disputes. With interviews with over 70 negotiators in the U.S. and Mexico, including every one of the chief negotiators who had decision-making authority at the negotiating table, the dissertation argues that a critical factor in breaking the cycle of disputes to reach agreement was that both sides were able to shift from solely allocating costs to also allocating benefits. The two countries reinterpreted the broader political and economic circumstances surrounding the shared water and energy resources, influenced in part by drastic natural disasters and resource shortages. These events, in turn, modified the countries' alternatives, drew stakeholders to the negotiations with revised mandates, fostered new back table coalitions, and led to a reframing of beneficial trades that had not been obvious earlier. Changes in political leadership, especially in regard to the interpretation of and response to transboundary challenges, were additional enabling factors making this shift possible. By focusing on the negotiation process and the tension between creating and claiming value, the dissertation attempts to draw prescriptive negotiation and leadership advice that may be useful in other international resource management disputes, particularly between developing and developed countries. As such, it aims to highlight how stakeholders can move beyond hard-bargaining tactics and avoid the ultimatums that accompany the presumption that there are not enough resources to go around, and that one side must win and the other must inevitably lose.

The main subject of this study is the consensus analysis of negotiations of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs). Generally speaking, delays and interruptions caused by controversies and impasses end up becoming strong efficiency problems which jeopardize the consensus building during any negotiation. As a justification, the target of this study is to identify processes to help obtain, efficiently, agreements in the RTAs negotiations. Its final objective was to search for theoretical tools and techniques to be applied in situations of stoppage in a sense of eliminating the difficulties or making them at least easier to deal with. Secondarily other theoretical points of view were considered with the intention of understanding how strategies and theoretical tools can contribute in each/or different scenario of the negotiation. Through the different ways of looking at it for the conduction of the negotiations, for evaluating the dimensions of the negotiations and in order to build up the consensus, the researcher was able to understand the perception and the interpretation of the subject in view. At last the conclusion was that the applicability of the chosen framework is positive in helping solve problems and controversies as well as building up the consensus during the negotiations.

Abstract:
Background: In Sweden 76 % of the population has savings in mutual funds, with a combined wealth of 1 925 billion SEK. The tax on capital gains is 30 % and is activated when the profit is realized. Many Swedes avoid triggering this tax effect and is therefore locked-in in their mutual funds. Purpose The purpose of this study is, from interviews with private fund investors and industry players, to explain how the capital gains tax affects individuals’ reasoning and actions. This behavior will then be analyzed in terms of existing theories in the field. Method: We have used an abductive method to achieve the purpose of this study. The empirical material has been collected through semi-structured interviews.  We have conducted 10 interviews with private fund investors and 6 people in the fund industry. The material from the interviews was then explained by means of the theories we have selected. Conclusion: In our study we came to the conclusion that the lock-in effect varies depending on the fund savers age. The younger group was more indifferent to the capital gains tax, due to a shorter investment horizon. The older group had a more unspecified investment horizon and based their investment decisions along the tax consequence. Capital gains tax then had a braking effect, as it would reduce the total wealth.

Protopapa, Sophia. "A high transfer system : technical and social factors in the organisation and their effect on intrinsic job satisfaction, mutual gains and discretionary effort." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/27973.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addressed the training transfer problem contributing to knowledge by introducing the concept of high transfer, proposing a new definition for high transfer and presenting the High Transfer System. It enriched existing literature and explored organisational factors and antecedents of transfer by embedding training in the technical HR system and the social system in the organisation, which, if properly enacted, can activate employee intrinsic job satisfaction, mutual gains and employee discretionary effort for high transfer. Thus, it accounted for the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of high transfer on the job in the dynamic organisational contexts in which people work. The High Transfer System is aimed to build employee ability, increase their motivation and provide them with opportunities to participate at work, leading to high transfer, if it is introduced in a pre-existing favourable organisational context and is effectively enacted by the manager. Data were generated from 21 individuals in two companies through face-to-face qualitative interviews. An interpretivist framework was used to capture the subjective experience of individuals at work and the personal meanings they attach to the factors affecting transfer and its antecedents. The recorded data were translated from Greek into English, transcribed to text using Microsoft Word, coded and thematically analysed producing six themes. The High Transfer System was built based on the principles of Grounded Theory. Participants’ responses stressed the value of on-the-job transfer for individual and organisational performance in service organisations. They revealed that transfer is affected by several technical and social factors which account not only for the use of newly trained skills on the job but also for the transfer of an individual’s previous skills, experience and tacit knowledge. Data showed that transfer is about individual change which effectively takes place in a system of reciprocal social relationships and interrelated factors affecting not only the skills but also the personalities and emotions of employees who are trained, as well as their managers and peers.

Walker, Maria. "Factors facilitating the implementation and functioning of workplace forums." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/923.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: One of the first labour reforms introduced by the then newly elected democratic government of South Africa was the introduction of statutory workplace forums. This ground-breaking chapter in the 1995 Labour Relations Act outlined the first legally mandated form of workplace participation, beyond the sphere of the collective bargaining arena. To date, however, the provisions of the Act which govern workplace forums have been subjected to criticism by both labour and business alike, as well as from academics. The sad reality is that there has been a minimal uptake in the establishment of these forums in the 13 years since the provisions of the Act came into force. This research report has delved into the reasons for this resistance, from the side of both labour and business. The multitude of reasons that exist have been grouped under a series of headings that have then allowed the writer to focus on finding factors that would facilitate the establishment of statutory workplace forums. In considering the factors that would facilitate the enhanced uptake and establishment of workplace forums, the research has guided the writer towards the implementation process per se, in particular the attitudinal and mind-set factors that are required as pre-requisites before the more legislatively focussed aspects of the implementation cycle should be undertaken. While there are no doubt valid concerns with several of the clauses in the legislative provisions, in the opinion of the writer these are not the predominant reasons for the failure of the workplace forum vehicle. The adversarial mindset that still exists between business and labour, as well as the worldviews and consequences that stem from such a mindset, has been the largest obstacle in the establishment of workplace forums. Until both parties, and the broader South African society within which all businesses exist, are able to make the fundamental shift from “win or lose” to “mutual gains through co-operation” the workplace forum vehicle will not be implemented, and the drive to further workplace participation will not be successful. The writer has suggested various changes that should be made to the legislation, and processes that should be put in place to start to lay the foundations upon which the workplace forum model can later be built up on.

Negotiation is the most efficient tool to achieve something you want, it occurs when there are conflicts and alternatives to be selected that can involve the whole company. The various alternatives have common and conflicting interests, expressing the complexity of relationships. With the increasing demand for agility in responding to the new profiles to search, organizations need to be more versatile in the process and faster to react to market changes, and the Negotiation of Mutual Gains (NMG) are a current driving value-creation. This dissertation aims to propose the use of tools of the theory of the NMG for the managers as a tool supporter of public purchases purchasers of products and services at IT to achieve the expected results. For this, we performed a search of a descriptive and exploratory using qualitative approach. To achieve this objective, theoretical studies were made of themes: Organizational Flexibility, Management of Public Procurement, Information Systems, Strategic Alignment and theory of negotiation in order to get a better understanding of the research. It was not drawn up a structured questionnaire, the research instrument used in this study. Applied the questionnaire directly to participants, it was obtained a participation of 10 respondents, all of participating in public bidding processes Delta. Once performed the data collection, the responses were analyzed using a form of the technique of content analysis, called pattern-matching in order to compare the results with the theoretical framework used in the study. As a result of the study, it was identified using the distributive approach in bidding processes.

Abstract:
State of the art direction finding (DF) systems usually have several antennas in order to increase accuracy and robustness to certain factors. In this thesis, a three antenna DF system is built and evaluated. While more antennas give better DF performance, a three antenna system is useful for system simplicity and many of the problems in DF systems can be observed and evaluated easily. This system can be used for both azimuth and elevation direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. The system is composed of three monopole antennas, an RF front end, A/D converters and digital signal processing (DSP) units. A number of algorithms are considered, such as, three channel interferometer, correlative interferometer, LSE (least square error) based correlative interferometer and MUSIC (multiple signal classification) algorithms. Different problems in DF systems are investigated. These are gain/phase mismatch of the receiver channels, mutual coupling between antennas, multipath signals and multiple sources. The advantages and disadvantages of different algorithms are outlined.

Abstract:
AbstractEU–Turkey relations have been subject to manifold ups and downs for decades. The EU’s role in Turkey’s domestic transformation has long been a matter of interest to the academic community. This chapter examines to what extent and under what conditions the EU has served as an anchor for the Turkish economy during the last two decades, focusing on the effects of the EU anchor on Turkey’s macroeconomic and trade policy. It finds that maintaining a European anchor after the Helsinki European Council helped Turkey realize much-desired comprehensive macroeconomic reforms, especially during times when the EU anchor was combined with another multilateral anchor. Nevertheless, the EU’s anchor-providing role has not been consistent and amidst changing political circumstances it is no longer considered an ‘elixir’ for the Turkish economy. The establishment of the Customs Union (CU) is revealed to have been a significant driver of the transformation of Turkey’s trade policy. While the trade partnership remains one of the few well-functioning aspects of the volatile bilateral dialogue between the EU and Turkey, the EU’s role in the trade policy arena is diminishing, and the upgrading of the CU remains vital to achieve further momentum and enhance mutual gains.

Abstract:
Network embedding which is to learn a low dimensional representation of nodes in a network has been used in many network analysis tasks. Some network embedding methods, including those based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) (a promising deep learning technique), have been proposed recently. Existing GAN-based methods typically use GAN to learn a Gaussian distribution as a priori for network embedding. However, this strategy makes it difficult to distinguish the node representation from Gaussian distribution. Moreover, it does not make full use of the essential advantage of GAN (that is to adversarially learn the representation mechanism rather than the representation itself), leading to compromised performance of the method. To address this problem, we propose to use the adversarial idea on the representation mechanism, i.e. on the encoding mechanism under the framework of autoencoder. Specifically, we use the mutual information between node attributes and embedding as a reasonable alternative of this encoding mechanism (which is much easier to track). Additionally, we introduce another mapping mechanism (which is based on GAN) as a competitor into the adversarial learning system. A range of empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:
Automatically generating videos according to the given text is a highly challenging task, where visual quality and semantic consistency with captions are two critical issues. In existing methods, when generating a specific frame, the information in those frames generated before is not fully exploited. And an effective way to measure the semantic accordance between videos and captions remains to be established. To address these issues, we present a novel Introspective Recurrent Convolutional GAN (IRC-GAN) approach. First, we propose a recurrent transconvolutional generator, where LSTM cells are integrated with 2D transconvolutional layers. As 2D transconvolutional layers put more emphasis on the details of each frame than 3D ones, our generator takes both the definition of each video frame and temporal coherence across the whole video into consideration, and thus can generate videos with better visual quality. Second, we propose mutual information introspection to semantically align the generated videos to text. Unlike other methods simply judging whether the video and the text match or not, we further take mutual information to concretely measure the semantic consistency. In this way, our model is able to introspect the semantic distance between the generated video and the corresponding text, and try to minimize it to boost the semantic consistency. We conduct experiments on 3 datasets and compare with state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our IRC-GAN to generate plausible videos from given text.

Abstract:
In Mozambique, development programmes have traditionally drawn on music as a means to promote social transformation by educating citizens on key social development issues. Shifting the focus from music as a teaching medium to music as a rich source of information can provide vital insights into public opinion and political ideas, and significantly impact the development of citizen engagement projects. Maximum gains for development and civil society agencies can be achieved by mainstreaming gender into mutual learning activities between singers, audiences, and academics.
