Abstract:
Objective: To assess the influence of probe position, lipodermatosclerosis and method of calf muscle emptying on the venous refilling time as measured by photoplethysmography in both normal limbs and limbs with chronic venous disease. Design: Prospective evaluation of age- and sex-matched control and study groups. Setting: University Department of Surgery, Vascular Research Laboratory, Fremantle Hospital, Western Australia. Patients: There were 38 controls and 31 patients with venous ulceration. Interventions: Venous refilling times were measured in six positions on the leg in all subjects: the foot, 5 cm below medial tibial condyle in the upper calf, and in the gaiter region on the medial, lateral, anterior and posterior positions at 7.5 cm above the medial malleolus. Measurements were undertaken on active exercise and after bimanual calf compression in the medial gaiter region. Measurements were also undertaken in areas of lipodermatosclerotic skin and in normal-appearing adjacent skin. Results: In normal legs, the lowest refilling times were in the anterior and lateral gaiter positions. Venous patients had a shorter refilling time in the dorsal foot, medial gaiter, posterior gaiter and medial below-knee positions, when compared with controls (Mann–Whitney U-test, p<0.01). The shortest refilling time in patients with venous disease was in the medial gaiter region. Refilling time was slightly prolonged over Hpodermatosclerotic skin compared with adjacent normal-looking skin. Refilling time measured after passive emptying of the calf muscle by external compression was significantly prolonged compared with calf emptying by active calf compression ( p<0.01). This change was similar for both groups. Conclusions: When using venous refilling time on photoplethysmography to distinguish venous from normal limbs, the best separation is in the medial gaiter position. If other probe sites or methods of calf emptying are to be employed, it is imperative that individual laboratory normal ranges be established for the particular method being employed.

Kälvegren, Christian, and Tobias Sjölin. "Wave power - The future of energy supply? Focusing on its sealing solutions." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-209547.

Full text
Abstract:
A new concept for extracting renewable power has been developed at KTH Electric Power and Energy Systems, this time regarding wave power. Unlike other wave energy converters this concepts generator opens up the possibility to be operative also during low speed and at the same time preserve high power density and efficiency. This solution needs to be sealed since its components don’t withstand the ambient environment; this is therefore the purpose of the project. Several problems exist with the sealing solutions that currently are available, that is why it exists a need to produce a custom sealing solution for this concept. Some of the problems are, for example, leakage and fatigue failure that lead to unacceptably short life expectancy. The issues discussed in the report and the project, are whether there are any loads acting on the seal that are specifically critical, if there is any way to easily reduce these, if there are any solutions that are denser than the current ones (which also have approved properties of strength and life expectancy as a result of the requirements imposed on them), if these solutions would be applicable in all seas and if these solutions are also economically applicable. To answer this, most conceptualizations have been conducted using brainstorming where potential solutions were evaluated based on the extensive information retrieval, to finally reach out and outline the most promising final concepts. These were then modeled using the 3D-modeling software Solid Edge to finally be analyzed using the Ansys software. The results and conclusions from both the search for information and the detailed analyzes were that the critical loads are stresses that arise from compression, expansion and bending of the buoy, which can be reduced by creating an inner structure in the seal which causes loads to occur more continuously. There are also sealing solutions that are completely dense as they enclose the part of the wave power concept that needs to be sealed, so-called gaiter solutions. In addition, these solutions are applicable in all seas, both from a material perspective, but also from a dimensioning one such as the possibility of adjusting the length of the seal during the manufacture along varying wave heights of where it is to be applied. Regarding the last question, which addresses economic applicability, no sufficiently accurate results could be generated and hence no conclusions could be drawn.

Estudi i edició." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/671876.

Abstract:
Joaquim Rubió i Ors is a poet very present in the histories of Catalan literature but his poetry is totally unknown, outside the academic and scholarly circles, having enjoyed an unusual popularity that later has been denied to him, until falling almost the totality of his work in the most absolute oblivion, like the vast majority of the poetry of the 19th Century until Jacint Verdaguer, due to an accumulation of aesthetic prejudices that have been created throughout the 20th Century. This thesis represents the first in-depth biographical study of the poet and the first complete edition of his poetry in Catalan since his death. Since 1902, the date of publication of the fourth volume of the third edition of Lo Gaiter del Llobregat, begun in life and finished posthumously by his son Antoni Rubió i Lluch, his poetry has only been published in anthologies, and always the same half a dozen poems, except for the edition I made myself in 2006 for Edicions 62 with the poems of the first Gaiter. The thesis proposes and justifies a text based on the study of the different manuscripts and the different editions made during the poet's lifetime.

Lille 3, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009LIL30007.

Full text
Abstract:
This research on polysemy of links in Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) concerns her last (posthumous published) œuvre : Los Parentescos (2001). The main objective of this study will be to analyse the notion of links in all its meanings and implications and the problematic that ensues. This work aims to unravel the "rail knot" (from the expression "nudo-ferrovario" which is borrowed from Irse de casa) in order to demonstrate piece by piece the textual chains of the author's narrative framework. It will analyse the different strata of the text, visible and invisible, implicit and explicit and underline all the relations and tensions that unite and disunite the characters following the example of the links of Baltasar (the notion of "threads" and of "cables" being intrinsic to the narrative fabric). It will outline the "filial" liaisons and the different connections between the author and the text, between the author and the reader (liaisons communicated by the subtle use of para-text). Finally, the examination of the work seen through the author's corpus will enable the problematisation of the polysemic relations which the text weaves with itself, and will help sketch a theory regarding polysemy in Carmen Martín Gaite's writing

Abstract:
In this thesis work an intelligent controller based on a gait synthesizer for a hexapod robot used in rescue operations is developed. The gait synthesizer draws decisions from insect-inspired gait patterns to the changing needs of the terrain and that of rescue. It is composed of three modules responsible for selecting a new gait, evaluating the current gait, and modifying the recommended gait according to the internal reinforcements of past time steps. A Fuzzy Logic Controller is implemented in selecting the new gaits.

Abstract:
This study presents a new reading of the critically neglected work of Carmen Martin Gaite (1925-) in the light of feminist criticism. It views her writing as a whole and relates it to psychoanalysis and philosophical movements such as existentialism. This thesis demonstrates that Martin Gaite's writing makes a major contribution to women's fiction and a fiction that vindicates women and a female point of view to the extent that she has become one of the most important contemporary women writers in Europe. In the first of three sections, I consider the author's early period of writing in the 1940s and 1950s where I consider some of the key aspects of the development of existentialism in Spain. An examination of Spanish society and its attitudes to the role of Spanish women, enables us to understand contemporary anxieties regarding feminism. This is supported by analysis of Gaite's short stories, written under the influence of existentialist ideas, and the study of the novel Entre visillos demonstrates how, by creating a text in which women have to learn to exist for themselves and not only for others, she subverts the dominant concept of existentialism. In the second part, I look at the 1960s and 1970s as a period of change in Spanish society and argue that feminism and psychoanalysis have had a greater influence in her writing. In the novel her Ritmo lento she looks critically at Spanish society from a psychoanalytical approach and with the perspective of a feminism based upon "equality”. Then, after some years of silence and reflection, the writing shifts to a feminism of difference, using psychoanalysis as a means of penetrating the unconscious of her characters. Finally, against the context of the 1980s and 1990s, I analyse her use of fairy tales as a means of subversion and of creating a new society in which women have found a place for themselves.

Abstract:
Gait study is important to the development of a practical legged robot. While many works of gait study have been presented in the past, gait transition between two gaits has not been fully studied. In this paper, an approach to formulate gait transition between two periodic gaits and between a wave gait and a continuous follow-the-leader (FTL) gait is developed for quadrupeds and hexapods. Special foot placement conditions such as the FTL feature during the transition cycle can be included in the formulation process. This approach can be extended to formulate gait transition between other gaits.

Abstract:
Snake-inspired locomotion is much more maneuverable compared to conventional locomotion concepts and it enables a robot to navigate through rough terrain. A rectilinear gait is quite flexible and has the following benefits: functionality on a wide variety of terrains, enables a highly stable robot platform, and provides pure undulatory motion without passive wheels. These benefits make rectilinear gaits especially suitable for search and rescue applications. However, previous robot designs utilizing rectilinear gaits were slow in speed. This paper introduces a new class of rectilinear gaits to be utilized by a snake-inspired robot design which is capable of pure linear motion and variable traction. The general model for the gait class is based on serial robot dynamics using the Lagrangian formulation. The gait class includes four unique gaits: a forward and a turning gait, which both emphasize speed for the robot; and a forward and turning gait which emphasize traction. Also, we perform an analysis of the variable traction concept.

Abstract:
A new method of controlling and optimizing robotic gaits for a modular robotic system is presented in this paper. A robotic gait is implemented on a robotic system consisting of three Mobot modules for a total of twelve degrees of freedom using a Fourier series representation for the periodic motion of each joint. The gait implementation allows robotic modules to perform synchronized gaits with little or no communication with each other making it scalable to increasing numbers of modules. The coefficients of the Fourier series are optimized by a genetic algorithm to find gaits which move the robot cluster quickly and efficiently across flat terrain. Simulated and experimental results show that the optimized gaits can have over twice as much speed as randomly generated gaits.

Abstract:
In recent years, snake-inspired locomotion has garnered increasing interest in the bio-inspired robotics community. This positive trend is largely due to the unique and highly effective gaits utilized by snakes to traverse various terrains and obstacles. These gaits make use of a snake’s hyper-redundant body structure to adapt to the terrain and maneuver through tight spaces. Snake-inspired robots utilizing rectilinear motion, one of the primary gaits observed in natural snakes, have demonstrated favorable results on various terrains. However, previous variations of the rectilinear gait were inefficient in cyclic displacement. These gaits generated vertical waves traveling along the length of the robot. Generating these waves required significant joint energy for relatively small horizontal displacements. This paper presents analytical and experimental results for a rectilinear gait, which demonstrates significant linear displacement for relatively low joint effort. The low effort gait functions by propagating a wave through the length of the robot via expansions and contractions of the body segments, propelling the robot platform forward. The low effort rectilinear gait is demonstrated on a robot platform that incorporates high speed linear motion and variable traction through friction. We also report the results of a case study showcasing the practical benefits of the low effort gait.

Abstract:
We present the design and gait generation for an experimental ROLLERBLADER. The ROLLERBLADER is a robot with a central platform mounted on omnidirectional casters and two 3 degree of freedom legs. A set of passive rollerblading wheels is attached to the end of each leg. The wheels give rise to nonholonomic constraints acting on the robot. The legs can be picked up and placed back on the ground allowing a combination of skating and walking gaits. We present two types of gaits for the robot. In the first gait, the legs are picked up and placed back on the ground. In the second gait, the wheels stay on the ground at all times. Experimental gait results for a prototype robot are also presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The gait transition models of a quadruped are studied based on gait kinematics and CMAC neural networks are applied to learn and generalize these gait transition models. Three gait transition cases are studied: from wave gait to continuous follow-the-leader gait, from walk to trot, and from trot to gallop. Four solution methods are proposed for solving the gait transition models. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate and display the gait transition models. The good transition gaits are then selected to train CMAC neural network gait transition models. The performance of the CMAC gait transition models are evaluated and found to be satisfactory.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the effect of period-doubling bifurcation on passive dynamic walking (PDW) of a compass-like biped robot which consists of three point masses and two legs. The gait pattern of the robot consists of a single-support phase and a double-support phase which occurs instantaneously. The support and swing legs are exchanged at the double-support phase. Period-doubling bifurcation of PDW occurs when the slope angle of the ground becomes large, and the robot walks with a long step and a short step, alternately. Hip torque is designed based on delayed feedback control (DFC) to suppress the bifurcation. The equation of motion for the robot is numerically integrated and the walking speed is calculated. The simulation results show an increase in walking speed after a period-two gait emerges. Then, DFC is applied to the gait and stabilizes it to a period-one gait. After a period-four gait emerges, DFC is also applied to the period-four gait and stabilize it to period-two and period-one gaits. By comparing the period-one gait with the period-four and the period-two gaits, it is shown that the period-two gait has the fastest mean walking speed. The effect of the robot parameters is investigated and it is shown that the fastest walking speed for the period-one gait can be obtained when a leg mass position is chosen to a certain value.
