A new concept for extracting renewable power has been developed at KTH Electric Power and Energy Systems, this time regarding wave power. Unlike other wave energy converters this concepts generator opens up the possibility to be operative also during low speed and at the same time preserve high power density and efficiency. This solution needs to be sealed since its components don’t withstand the ambient environment; this is therefore the purpose of the project. Several problems exist with the sealing solutions that currently are available, that is why it exists a need to produce a custom sealing solution for this concept. Some of the problems are, for example, leakage and fatigue failure that lead to unacceptably short life expectancy. The issues discussed in the report and the project, are whether there are any loads acting on the seal that are specifically critical, if there is any way to easily reduce these, if there are any solutions that are denser than the current ones (which also have approved properties of strength and life expectancy as a result of the requirements imposed on them), if these solutions would be applicable in all seas and if these solutions are also economically applicable. To answer this, most conceptualizations have been conducted using brainstorming where potential solutions were evaluated based on the extensive information retrieval, to finally reach out and outline the most promising final concepts. These were then modeled using the 3D-modeling software Solid Edge to finally be analyzed using the Ansys software. The results and conclusions from both the search for information and the detailed analyzes were that the critical loads are stresses that arise from compression, expansion and bending of the buoy, which can be reduced by creating an inner structure in the seal which causes loads to occur more continuously. There are also sealing solutions that are completely dense as they enclose the part of the wave power concept that needs to be sealed, so-called gaiter solutions. In addition, these solutions are applicable in all seas, both from a material perspective, but also from a dimensioning one such as the possibility of adjusting the length of the seal during the manufacture along varying wave heights of where it is to be applied. Regarding the last question, which addresses economic applicability, no sufficiently accurate results could be generated and hence no conclusions could be drawn.
Ett nytt koncept för att utvinna förnyelsebar energi har framtagits på KTH Elkraftteknik, denna gång handlar det om vågkraft. Till skillnad från flera andra vågkraftverk så öppnar detta koncepts nyframtagna generator upp för möjligheten att vara verksamt även vid låga hastigheter samtidigt som det bibehåller hög krafttäthet samt verkningsgrad. Denna lösning av generatorn är i behov av att tätas då dess ingående komponenter inte tål den omgivande havsmiljön, detta är därför syftet med projektet som genomförts. Flertalet problem existerar med de lösningar som för nuvarande finns att tillgå, varför det finns behov av att ta fram en skräddarsydd tätningslösning till detta koncept. Dessa problem är exempelvis läckage och utmattningsbrott vilka leder till att livslängden hos tätningarna blir oacceptabelt kort. De frågeställningar vilka i rapporten och projektet behandlas är ifall det finns några belastningar verkande på tätningen som är specifikt kritiska, ifall det finns något enkelt sätt att reducera just dessa, ifall det finns några lösningar som är tätare än de som finns att tillgå idag (som också har godkända egenskaper gällande hållfasthet och livslängd till följd av de krav som ställs på dem), ifall dessa lösningar skulle vara applicerbara i alla hav och ifall dessa lösningar är ekonomiskt tillämpbara. För att besvara detta har flertalet konceptgenereringar utförts med hjälp av brainstorming där potentiella lösningar utvärderats baserat på en omfattande informationssökning, för att till sist komma fram till och skissera upp de mest lovande slutkoncepten. Dessa modellerades därefter upp med hjälp av 3D-modelleringsprogrammet Solid Edge för att slutligen analyseras med programvaran Ansys. Resultaten och slutsatserna från både informationssökningen och de utförliga analyserna var att de kritiska belastningarna är de spänningar vilka uppstår till följd av kompression, expansion och böjning av bojen, vilka kan reduceras genom att skapa en inre struktur i tätningen som leder till att belastningarna sker mer jämnt. Det finns även tätningslösningar vilka är helt täta då de inkapslar den del av vågkraftskonceptet som behöver tätas, så kallade damasklösningar. Dessa lösningar är dessutom applicerbara i alla hav både ur ett perspektiv gällande material men också ett dimensioneringsmässigt sådant, där möjligheten finns att justera tätningens längd vid tillverkningen utefter den varierande våghöjden där denna ska appliceras. Gällande den sista frågan vilken behandlar den ekonomiska tillämpbarheten kunde inga tillräckligt träffsäkra resultat genereras och därav inga slutsatser dras.

Joaquim Rubió i Ors és un poeta molt present a les històries de la literatura catalana però la seva poesia és totalment desconeguda, fora dels cercles acadèmics i erudits, havent gaudit d’una popularitat insòlita que després li ha estat negada, fins a caure quasi la totalitat de la seva obra en l’oblit més absolut, com la immensa majoria de la poesia del vuit-cents fins a Jacint Verdaguer, a causa d’un cúmul de prejudicis estètics que s’han anat creant tot al llarg del segle XX. Aquesta tesi representa el primer estudi biogràfic a fons del poeta i la primera edició completa de la seva poesia en català des de la seva mort. Des del 1902, data d’aparició del quart volum de la tercera edició de Lo Gaiter del Llobregat començada en vida i acabada pòstumament pel fill Antoni Rubió i Lluch, la seva poesia només ha estat publicada en antologies, i sempre la mateixa mitja dotzena de poemes, si exceptuem l’edició que vaig fer jo mateix el 2006 per a Edicions 62 amb els poemes del primer Gaiter. La tesi proposa i justifica un text a partir de l'estudi dels diferents manuscrits i les les diferents edicions fetes en vida del poeta.
Joaquim Rubió i Ors es un poeta muy presente en las historias de la literatura catalana pero su poesía es totalmente desconocida, fuera de los círculos académicos y eruditos, habiendo disfrutado de una popularidad insólita que luego le ha sido negada, hasta caer casi la totalidad de su obra en el olvido más absoluto, como la inmensa mayoría de la poesía del ochocientos hasta Jacint Verdaguer, debido a un cúmulo de prejuicios estéticos que se han ido creando a lo largo del siglo XX. Esta tesis representa el primer estudio biográfico a fondo del poeta y la primera edición completa de su poesía en catalán desde su muerte. Desde el 1902, fecha de aparición del cuarto volumen de la tercera edición de Lo Gaiter del Llobregat comenzada en vida y acabada póstumamente por su hijo Antoni Rubio i Lluch , su poesía solo ha sido publicada en antologías, y siempre la misma media docena de poemas, si exceptuamos la edición que hice yo mismo en 2006 para Edicions 62 con los poemas del primer Gaiter. La tesis propone y justifica un texto a partir del estudio de los diferentes manuscritos y las diferentes ediciones hechas en vida del poeta.
Joaquim Rubió i Ors is a poet very present in the histories of Catalan literature but his poetry is totally unknown, outside the academic and scholarly circles, having enjoyed an unusual popularity that later has been denied to him, until falling almost the totality of his work in the most absolute oblivion, like the vast majority of the poetry of the 19th Century until Jacint Verdaguer, due to an accumulation of aesthetic prejudices that have been created throughout the 20th Century. This thesis represents the first in-depth biographical study of the poet and the first complete edition of his poetry in Catalan since his death. Since 1902, the date of publication of the fourth volume of the third edition of Lo Gaiter del Llobregat, begun in life and finished posthumously by his son Antoni Rubió i Lluch, his poetry has only been published in anthologies, and always the same half a dozen poems, except for the edition I made myself in 2006 for Edicions 62 with the poems of the first Gaiter. The thesis proposes and justifies a text based on the study of the different manuscripts and the different editions made during the poet's lifetime.

Le fil de cette recherche sur la polysémie du lien chez Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) se tissera autour de la dernière œuvre - posthume - de l'auteur : Los Parentescos (2001). L'objectif premier de cette étude sera d'analyser la notion de lien dans toutes ses significations et implications, et la problématique qui en découle. Ce travail visera à dénouer le "nœud ferroviaire" (l'expression "nudi ferrovario" étant empruntée à Irse de casa), à démonter pièce par pièce le maillage textuel de la trame narrative de l'auteur. Il analysera les différentes strates, visibles ou invisibles, implicites ou explicites, du texte étudié. Il mettra en exergue l'ensemble des relations et des tensions qui unissent ou désunissent les personnages, à l'instar des accointances de Baltasar (les notions de "fils" et de "cables" étant intrinsèques au tissu narratif). Il mettra en évidence les liaisons "filiaires" et les différentes connexions entre l'auteur et le texte, entre l'auteur et le lecteur (liaisons qui passent aussi par une utilisation subtile du paratexte). Enfin, l'examen de l'œuvre, au regard du corpus de l'auteur, permettra de problématiser la relation polysémique que le texte tisse avec lui-même, et d'esquisser une théorie du lien dans l'écriture de Carmen Martín Gaite
This research on polysemy of links in Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) concerns her last (posthumous published) œuvre : Los Parentescos (2001). The main objective of this study will be to analyse the notion of links in all its meanings and implications and the problematic that ensues. This work aims to unravel the "rail knot" (from the expression "nudo-ferrovario" which is borrowed from Irse de casa) in order to demonstrate piece by piece the textual chains of the author's narrative framework. It will analyse the different strata of the text, visible and invisible, implicit and explicit and underline all the relations and tensions that unite and disunite the characters following the example of the links of Baltasar (the notion of "threads" and of "cables" being intrinsic to the narrative fabric). It will outline the "filial" liaisons and the different connections between the author and the text, between the author and the reader (liaisons communicated by the subtle use of para-text). Finally, the examination of the work seen through the author's corpus will enable the problematisation of the polysemic relations which the text weaves with itself, and will help sketch a theory regarding polysemy in Carmen Martín Gaite's writing

In this thesis work an intelligent controller based on a gait synthesizer for a hexapod robot used in rescue operations is developed. The gait synthesizer draws decisions from insect-inspired gait patterns to the changing needs of the terrain and that of rescue. It is composed of three modules responsible for selecting a new gait, evaluating the current gait, and modifying the recommended gait according to the internal reinforcements of past time steps. A Fuzzy Logic Controller is implemented in selecting the new gaits.

This study presents a new reading of the critically neglected work of Carmen Martin Gaite (1925-) in the light of feminist criticism. It views her writing as a whole and relates it to psychoanalysis and philosophical movements such as existentialism. This thesis demonstrates that Martin Gaite's writing makes a major contribution to women's fiction and a fiction that vindicates women and a female point of view to the extent that she has become one of the most important contemporary women writers in Europe. In the first of three sections, I consider the author's early period of writing in the 1940s and 1950s where I consider some of the key aspects of the development of existentialism in Spain. An examination of Spanish society and its attitudes to the role of Spanish women, enables us to understand contemporary anxieties regarding feminism. This is supported by analysis of Gaite's short stories, written under the influence of existentialist ideas, and the study of the novel Entre visillos demonstrates how, by creating a text in which women have to learn to exist for themselves and not only for others, she subverts the dominant concept of existentialism. In the second part, I look at the 1960s and 1970s as a period of change in Spanish society and argue that feminism and psychoanalysis have had a greater influence in her writing. In the novel her Ritmo lento she looks critically at Spanish society from a psychoanalytical approach and with the perspective of a feminism based upon "equality”. Then, after some years of silence and reflection, the writing shifts to a feminism of difference, using psychoanalysis as a means of penetrating the unconscious of her characters. Finally, against the context of the 1980s and 1990s, I analyse her use of fairy tales as a means of subversion and of creating a new society in which women have found a place for themselves.

Este texto propõe-se a analisar o discurso ficcional de Carmen Martín Gaite como um discurso alternativo à nação espanhola dominada pelo regime franquista (1939-1975), que se formou a partir da Guerra Civil Espanhola (1936-1939) e estendeu-se até a metade da década de 1970, com a morte do General Franco e com a pressão dos novos tempos. Esta discussão da narrativa imposta pelo poder político, moral e religioso ditatorial é aqui balizada pelas teorias críticas feministas, que se pautam por uma “outra” leitura divulgadora das vozes marginalizadas que compõem uma nação, proclamada pelos pronunciamentos oficiais como uníssona, democrática e desenvolvida. As estratégias desta narrativa alternativa, proposta pela ficção, são diversas, mas basicamente são inauguradas por um olhar silencioso, que resgata da memória uma verdade banida da história do período franquista. Buscamos nos artigos e ensaios, produzidos pela autora, referências à literatura feita por mulheres, assim como sua concepção acerca da própria literatura, de modo a melhor compreender seu discurso e suas filiações levadas ao texto ficcional. Os contos de Martín Gaite, reunidos nos volumes Cuentos completos e Cuéntame, são pela primeira vez estudados na academia brasileira e revelam ser uma rica fonte para a investigação dos estudos literários e para a compreensão da Espanha democrática. Estas narrativas breves apresentam uma narradora ventanera que se espreita nas janelas, as poucas aberturas das casas, para observar e denunciar um espaço em que as estratégias de dominação perpassam as questões de classe e, principalmente, as de gênero. Esta narradora empresta sua voz às personagens silenciadas, reivindicando o local de pertencimento da mulher, garantindo-lhe um lugar em um enunciado oficialmente restrito aos divulgadores do “novo regime” e construindo uma Espanha possível e real, na medida em que auxilia a desvelar uma verdade discursiva imposta, indicando um caminho de libertação através da consciência do aprisionamento contingente.

Esta discusión de la narrativa impuesta por el poder político, moralejo y religioso dictatorial es aquí jalonada por las teorías críticas feministas, que claman por “otra” lectura, promotora de las voces marginadas que componen una nación, proclamada por los pronunciamientos oficiales como unísona, democrática y desarrollada. Las estrategias de esta narrativa alternativa, propuesta por la ficción, son diversas, pero básicamente son inauguradas por una mirada silenciosa, que rescata de la memoria una verdad rechazada por la historia del período franquista. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar como a escritora Camen Martín Gaite (1925 - 2000) resgata a memória coletiva da Espanha por meio do resgate da sua própria memória, pelas obras El cuarto de atrás (1978) e Usos amorosos de la postguerra española (1987). Tendo sempre como objetivo compreender a sociedade espanhola do franquismo, veremos como a autora, a partir de suas reminiscências, retrata o período da história espanhola que ficou marcado pelas palavras restrição e racionamento. Analisaremos, portanto, o contexto político no qual cada obra foi produzida e a importância de cada uma delas para a literatura espanhola por terem rompido paradigmas. Este estudo mostrará como a autora se reinventa a cada obra publicada, pois, apesar da temática abordada ser sempre a mesma, os asfixiantes anos da pós-guerra espanhola, ela não se repete em nenhum momento. El cuarto de atrás trata-se de um romance híbrido que mescla autobiografia e ficção permeados pelo discurso ensaístico, já Usos amorosos de la postguerra española trata-se de um ensaio, sendo assim, analisaremos também as características dos gêneros que os definem.

Cette thèse s'attache à étudier en profondeur les dernières œuvres de la romancière espagnole Carmen Martín Gaite en partant d'une problématique que Roland Barthes ébauche dans son essai "Le plaisir du texte", ouvrage expressément cité par l'une des deux protagonistes du roman "Nubosidad variable". Est ainsi définie et explicitée, au cours de ce travail, la nature du plaisir-jouissance reflété par l'art narratif de cet écrivain, plaisir de lecture et plaisir d'écriture, tous deux unis dans un hypothétique idéal de parfaite communication. Liant l'idée de jouissance à une perverse destruction d'un système de valeurs pourtant accepté comme tel - laquelle idée affirme, par conséquent, l'existence d'un certain concept de dualité et de faille -, le propos général de cette analyse consiste en un examen attentif des ruptures systématiques et récurrentes que sous-tend l'art narratif de la romancière, principalement dans ses œuvres "Nubosidad variable" (1992), "Irse de casa" (1998) et enfin "La Reina de las Nieves" (1994). C'est, en effet, dans ce dernier roman que le concept de rupture rappelle et transcende en les appliquant les thèses exposées par Todorov dans son ouvrage "Introduction à la littérature fantastique" auquel faisait déjà allusion un roman antérieur de Carmen Martín Gaite, "El cuarto de atrás" (1978). Le fantastique se révélant être l'aboutissement, le paroxysme et le couronnement du plaisir "gai͏̈tien", il se rapportera, par tautologie, à l'essence même de cette écriture

Ernest Gaines collection of five short stories Bloodline, (1968) depicts the effects of racism and its denigrating effects on the lives of the black men. Gaines use of animal imagery furthers the effects of racism on the psychology of the blacks. The resolution comes around in the form of a mentor who helps the protagonists to break through the debilitating mind-set and work towards a new self-identity no longer defined by the white man. Gaines articulates the effects of lack of maturity, responsibility and understanding on the lives of the protagonists, their families and the community as a whole. Gaines brings out the new avatar of the black man who in his self-actualized journey arrives at an understanding of nurturing, caring and contributing to the community. It marks both the culmination and a beginning of true manhood in the lives of his central characters.

Cette étude cherche à penser la nécessité de la littérature : d'une part en la considérant d'un point de vue esthétique afin de s'approcher d'une définition, en commençant par se pencher sur le langage, puis sur ce qui fait de la littérature un art, "l'art littéraire" ; d'autre part, en considérant la littérature d'un point de vue ontologique, comme étant à la fois l'un des espaces permettant la représentation et l'interrogation - philosophique - de la pensée, mais aussi un espace où la pensée - quand elle risque le désastre - peut trouver à se transformer pour gagner l'art, l'art littéraire. Cette recherche est le résultat de l'analyse détaillée de trois romans, saisis comme fondamentaux, de l'oeuvre littéraire d'un auteur espagnol majeur du XXe siècle : Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000). Le premier roman étudié, "Los Parentescos" (2000), permet de rendre compte de la théorie du langage pratiquée et révélée par l'auteur à même le roman, et ainsi, de saisir le langage en tant que matière de la littérature. Le deuxième roman, "Ritmo lento" (1963), fait glisser cette quête de définition de la littérature de la perspective métalinguistique à la perspective philosophique en prenant pour objet la pensée dans la représentation de l'expérience de sa radicalité tournant au désastre. Le troisième roman, "La Reina de las Nieves" (1994), permet le retour à la considération esthétique de la littérature, et notamment à sa dimension essentiellement artistique, que notre auteur nous invite à décliner à travers les notions d'esthésie, mémoire, et immagination. Par où une oeuvre littéraire se révèle théorie littéraire ; par où on assiste à l'émergence d'une théorie de la nécessité de la littérature.

This dissertation examines three of Carmen Martín Gaite’s later novels, identifying existential issues that are presented through the narrative. It aims to unravel issues pertaining to personal identity, freedom, communication and ethical stances in a postmodern context. The thesis is divided into three studies, one for each novel examined. The corpus of novels includes Nubosidad variable (1992), La reina de las nieves (1994) and Lo raro es vivir (1996). The Introduction and the General Conclusions cover all three studies. The first examines the epistolary nature of Nubosidad variable, presenting the subjective and dialogical aspects of the texts in question. The protagonists’ quest for true identity, concealed beneath acquired social roles, elicits a search for authenticity. The second study analyses the intertextual character of La reina de las nieves, identifying the existential issues that are imbedded in the intertexts and the narrative. The third study looks into the importance of communication in a self-exploratory process in which death and life-giving issues are discussed. Identity is understood as a combination of ipse, selfhood, and idem, sameness and narrative identity as a narrative formation of discourse in which human experience is articulated and subject to change over time (Ricoeur). Freedom, responsibility, authenticity and subjectivity are viewed in light of theoretical considerations offered, inter alia, by Sartre and Kierkegaard. The study concludes that the main idea of these novels is that the act of writing gives purpose or meaning to life. Although death is ever-present, emphasis is placed on life challenges and the subject’s existential sense of direction. As regards ethical inclinations in the novels, there is an appraisal of the effort to acquire self-knowledge and self-fulfilment, assuming personal responsibility for choices made in life.

De entre visillos (1958) a la reina de las nieves(1994), les personnages romanesques de c. Martin gaite suivent l'evolution narrative de l'auteur. Son regard sur la jeunesse provinciale des annees cinquante s'interiorise avec ritmo lento: david, en crise avec lui-meme, ne s'integre pas dans une societe hostile. L'absence d'un interlocuteur veritable le perd. Eulalia et germain, protagonistes de retahilas cherchent aussi a se definir, mais le dialogue qu'ils instaurent est source de vie. La construction de soi subordonnee a l'interlocuteur ideal va s'affirmer, malgre fragmentos de interior ou les personnages, mures dans leur incommunicabilite, aboutissent a leur negation. El cuarto de atras restitue l'echange verbal, avec la presence de cet interlocuteur, il demontre le poids des souvenirs d'enfance et le role indispensable de la memoire-percus avec retahilas - dans la quete de l'identite. Le roman s'elabore parallelement a la conversation des deux personnages, a l'insu de la protagoniste-narratrice-auteur. L'oralite glisse vers l'ecriture, autre facteur fondamental dans la construction de soi. Dans nubosidad variable, sofia et mariana soignent la blessure de leur adolescence et acceptent leur realite, en s'offrant, par ecriture interposee, des souvenirs exhumes sans complaisance. Elles decouvrent la difficulte de recomposer leur identite, morcelee comme un puzzle dont chacune possede des fragments. Leonardo, dans la reina de las nieves, reconstitue lui aussi son passe. L'interlocutrice casilda conjugue oralite et ecriture: les dialogues et les romans qu'elle a ecrits existent vraiment, curieusement, il sont le reflet de l'identite de leonardo. L'ecriture de sa propre vie le conduira a cette inconnue qui sera son salut. Progressivement, les personnages de c. Martin gaite trouvent une issue a leur crise existentielle grace a la reconstitution de leur passe, mise au service d'une ecriture redemptrice offerte a un interlocuteur, protagoniste, narrateur et/ou ecrivain|
From entre visillos (1958) to la reina de las nieves (1994), the characters in the novels of c. Martin gaite follow her evolution in narration. Her portrayal of provincial youth in the fifties becomes introspective in ritmo lento. David, in conflict with himself, is an outsider in an hostile society. The absence of a real interlocutor will cause his destruction. Eulalia and german, protagonists in retahilas, also attempt to define themselves but the dialogue they set up will create life. Self-construction relying on the ideal interlocutor is emphasized, in spite of fragmentos de interior, whereincommunicability leads the characters to their own negation. El cuarto de atras restitutes oral exchange with the presence of this interlocutor and underlines the weight of childhood memories and the essential part of memory in the characters search for identity, as in retahilas. The novel emerges in parallel to the conversation between the two characters, without the protagonist-narrator-author being aware of it. Progressively, oral discourse gives way to writing, another primary function in self-construction. The act of writing his own story will drive him towards this unknown woman who will save him. Progressively, c. Martin gaite's characters will find an issue to their existential crisis by reconstructing their past, sometimes through writing offered to an interlocutor, protagonist, narrator and/or writer|

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to show how the Jungian process of individuation — the psychological development of a unique individual — is depicted in the fairy tales of the twentieth-century Spanish writer, Carmen Martín Gaite. The three shorter tales — El castillo de las tres murallas, El pastel del diablo and Caperucita en Manhattan — are explored here along with the novel, La reina de las nieves. Individuation, as well as being the means by which an individual person develops, also implies a new way of relating between human beings. Jung described the outcome of individuation as ‘objective cognition’ which, this thesis argues, is equivalent to love and conscious relatedness between persons. Dreams play a crucial role in the individuation process — as they do in the work of Martín Gaite — guiding the dreamer on his/her journey. Dreams facilitate encounters with aspects of the personal and collective unconscious, which appear in symbolic form. The protagonist of the story by Martín Gaite which is closest to a traditional fairy tale (El castillo de las tres murallas) and the novel which takes a traditional tale as its reference point (La reina de las nieves) illustrate the importance of dreams in the development of the protagonists. At the heart of each of the other two tales — El pastel del diablo and Caperucita en Manhattan — is an imagined text which illustrates, in symbolic form, aspects of the individuation process. Connections have been made in Jungian thinking between individuation and the development of Christianity into a third age, the Age of the Holy Spirit, because of the major shift in consciousness (akin to the change which occurred 2000 years ago with the birth of Christ). Alongside the exploration of individuation in the fairy tales, this thesis also considers parallels with the Christian story and indications of its development or renewal.

The aim of this thesis is to facilitate dialogue between the narrative fiction of three Spanish women novelists (Carmen Martin Gaite, Rosa Montero, and Lourdes Ortiz) and key concepts in the writings of Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin. The thesis centres on the concept of dialogue, both within and beyond textual boundaries. Dialogue may be an integral part of a narrative, where at a most basic level, characters are engaged in conversation; the thesis starts by focusing on texts which contain a split narrative voice, resulting in intratextual dialogue between two conversation partners, or interlocutors. On a second level, there may be a dialogue between the diverse levels of a more complex narrative; the texts analysed in the third chapter demonstrate this further fragmentation of the narrating voice. In these novels, a plurality of voices may be found, as well as written texts produced by the characters. All of these internal dialogues make up what is known as intratextuality and contribute to a text's heteroglossia. A further category of dialogue occurs when a text refers, by citation, mimicry, parody or revision, to other, external texts. This dialogue between texts is intertextuality; a fourth chapter develops an analysis of intertextual dialogues between independent novels or entire genres. These divisions of the thesis can only be relative, as will be seen when overlaps occur. The conclusion offers a discussion of a novel by Martin Gaite which brings together all of the three elements (dialogue, heteroglossia, and intertextuality)previously discussed separately. The fragments, strands, and webs referred to in the introduction to the thesis indicate the complexity of contemporary narrative fiction written by women; these. texts are composed of fragments of other, pre-existing discourses, combined to produce various strands of plot and overlapping webs of intrigue. Dialogue emerges as a salient feature of contemporary narrative fiction written by women. Whether it is also a feature of texts written by men, and the implications of their use of this strategy, still remains to be seen. By concentrating on women novelists, the thesis illustrates how Bakhtin's theory can be applied to a feminist analysis and a gendered reading of literature; and indicates the many substantial connections that exist between the texts produced from the late 1970s to early 19908 by the three different Spanish women writers.

In June 1917 W.B. Yeats wrote to his father : Much of your thought resembles mine . . but mine is part of a religious system more or less logically worked out, a system which will I hope interest you as a form of poetry. I find the setting it all in order has helped my verse, has given me a new framework and new patterns. (Wade 1954, 627) The new framework and new patterns that he claimed to have found in his system generated a new, and for Yeats, radically different sort of poetry. Before 1919 (The Wild Swans at Coole), the poetry had as its subject various traditional themes: the pity of love; the romance and heroism of Irish mythology; the threat of age, change and death. The poetry up to this point is, formally speaking, highly skillful, but locked into its own admissions of failure to touch or incorporate reality in any but a romantically defeatist way. However, the order which Yeats refers to in his letter, and the system he generated as a propaedeutic to this new order, once assimilated into the habit and texture of the poetry, generated new topics of its own which made those of the earlier work seem subjective, self- indulgent and intellectually uninformed. Yeats's poetry now changed drastically in focus and form, from subjective to objective poetry. Whereas the earlier poetry had opposed reality with romantic heroism or selfdestructive despondency, the poetry subsequent to his change of practice, incorporates a new vision of reality as the intrinsic architechtonics of poetry itself. Now the measure of human and aesthetic completion is no longer an inexplicable and inscrutable sadness, but an intelligent and informed detachment, an energy of mind that Yeats called "gaiety". My thesis explores this energy of mind and what it meant for Yeats and his poetry. My contention is that the idea of gaiety provides a way for Yeats to grant meaning to his life, a way for him to create himself. As the poetry is completed thanks to the new system, so is the poet. In order to see this, it is necessary to read the poems as a series of collections, or stories, that resonate back and forth with meaning and qualification and understanding. Yeats's system is his myth, and he writes his poetry in terms of and informed by that myth, shaping and re-shaping the experience of the created and fictional self until it has meaning in a way that the real self does not. The thesis explores this process of creation firstly in theoretical terms, using Lotman's ideas of Story and Myth, and looking at Yeats's intellectual and poetic inheritance. It goes on to examine some of the great poems in an attempt to define gaiety, and how Yeats achieves it in the poetry, and then to look at the early, pre-system poems to see how they differ. Finally, it takes the last of Yeats's lyric collections, Last Poems, and shows how gaiety works in the most mature poetry when the poems are read as narrative events within a story.

Le premier volume présente une étude du Hiéron ou sur la tyrannie, dialogue écrit par Xénophon d'Athènes, auteur prolifique du IVe siècle av. J. C. Le second volume présente le texte grec, une nouvelle traduction, des notes et un index répertoriant les mots grecs. L’étude poursuit plusieurs objectifs. Elle propose une réflexion sur la méthodologie d’approche de Xénophon ; une analyse de sa structure rhétorique ; une analyse de sa place dans le corpus xénophontique ; une étude du message historique ; une analyse du texte dans le contexte de la tradition des épinicies et du genre de Fürstenspiegel grec ; des biographies des prototypes choisis par l'auteur ; et des rapprochements avec les textes parallèles écrits par d'autres théoriciens politiques, Platon, Isocrate et Aristote. Selon nous, le dialogue de Xénophon doit être lu comme une réaction consciente et motivée au portait du tyran platonicien décrit dans les livres VIII et IX de la République. The first volume contains an elaborate study of the Hiero or Tyrannicus, dialogue written by Xenophon, a prolific author of the IVth century BC. The second volume presents a new translation in French, notes and an index of greek words. The study itself has several aims: it proposes a reflection on the methodology of reading Xenophon; an analysis of the rhetorical structure of the text; an analysis of its place in the corpus xenophonticum; a study of its political message in the historical context of the Greek IVth century; an analysis in the context of the epinician tradition, as well as the tradition of the Greek Fürstenspiegel. It also provides biographies and studies of the two prototypes of the persons of the dialogue, looks into the established topoi about the tyranny that Xenophon worked on and provides detailed comparisons with parallel texts written by important political theorists, Isocrates, Plato and Aristotle. I try to show that the dialogue must be read as a conscious and motivated reaction to the tyrant's portrait in books VIII and IX of the Republic. I also believe that Aristotle had read the Hiero, and the chapters of the Politics that deal with the methods of preserving the tyranny are influenced by some of the Xenophon's ideas. After a detailed study of different historians' hypotheses concerning the prototype tyrant, I conclude that Xenophon must have thought about Dionysius the Elder, tyrant of Syracuse between 403 and 376 BC. A certain amount of observations and arguments seem to prove that the dialogue was written shortly after 358 BC. The last part is devoted to the reception of the Hiero made by the american philosopher Leo Strauss (1899-1973) who proposed a radically ironic reading of the Hiero that is not historically plausible

Esse estudo tem como objetivo analisar como se desenvolve o processo de rememoração, como base da ficção, em dois romances de Carmen Martín Gaite: Retahílas (1974), produzido durante a ditadura franquista e El cuarto de atrás (1978), que começou a ser escrito no mês da morte de Franco em 1975. Nossa análise tem como foco a reconstrução da história das narradoras-protagonistas que, já adultas, evocam os anos da adolescência e da infância e de cujas evocações surgem fatos históricos vivenciados por elas. Esta relação entre literatura, memória e história é uma marca que concerne somente a estes dois romances dessa autora. Dessa forma, analisaremos este ir e vir das narradoras, em busca de um interlocutor ideal, numa tentativa de recompor um período histórico que marcou de maneira contundente o povo espanhol. Para tanto, estudaremos as articulações entre narradores-protagonistas, personagens, tempo, espaço, matéria narrada e História.

Esta relación entre literatura, memoria e historia es una huella que concierne solo a estas dos novelas de esa autora. Así, analisaremos este ir y venir de las narradoras, en búsqueda de un interlocutor ideal, en un intento de recomponer un periodo histórico que dejó huellas contundentes en el pueblo español. Para tanto, estudiaremos las articulaciones entre narradores protagonistas, personajes, tiempo, espacio, materia narrada e Historia.

Every movement has a goal. For reaching, the goal is to move the hand to a specific location. For locomotion, however, goals for each step cycle are unclear and veiled by the automatic nature of lower limb control. What mechanical variables does the nervous system "care" about during locomotion? Abundant evidence from the biomechanics literature suggests that the force generated on the ground, or endpoint force, is an important task variable during hopping and running. Hopping and running are called bouncing gaits for the reason that the endpoint force trajectory is like that of bouncing on a pogo stick. In this work, I captured kinematics and kinetics of human bouncing gaits, and tested whether structure in the inherent step-to-step variability is consistent with control of endpoint force. I found that joint torques covary from step to step to stabilize only peak force. When two limbs are used to generate force on the ground at the same time, individual forces of the limbs are not stabilized, but the total peak force is stabilized. Moreover, passive dynamics may be exploited during forward progression. These results suggest that the number of kinetic goals is minimal, and this simple control scheme involves goals for discrete times during the gait cycle. Uncovering biomechanical goals of locomotion provides a functional context for understanding how complex joints, muscles, and neural circuits are coordinated.

This thesis tackles the work of Ernest J. Gaines, a contemporary African-American writer from Louisiana, by exploring three main notions, identity, community and languages, and by showing that his fiction opens a space where a community of language, stories and history can take shape, and where identity is built in an interactive and performative way, in constant contact with the other, be he Black, Mulatto or White. It shows that anamnesis enables Blacks to become aware of the necessity to resist and to reappropriate their (h)istory - a lively history feeding on individual memory. Gaines' work not only pays a vibrant tribute to the word, but also opens a dialogic and polyphonic space : Ernest J. Gaines is thus above all a story teller, who pays allegiance to the oral tradition by letting voices arise from his writing

Le developpement d'un incendie constitue un des incidents industriels les plus couteux non seulement en raison des degats qu'il peut occasionner, mais aussi par la perte d'activite qu'il entraine. Dans ce domaine, electricite de france deploie un effort permanent pour assurer la surete de ses centrales nucleaires, notamment en approfondissant sa connaissance des materiaux susceptibles de bruler dans une centrale, materiaux tels que les cables electriques. Ce travail a pour objectif la mise au point d'une methode experimentale et numerique pour caracteriser le comportement au feu des cables electriques. L'etude a d'abord porte sur le phenomene de pyrolyse d'un cable electrique. La degradation thermique d'un cable soumis a un flux de chaleur uniforme a ete simulee numeriquement grace a un modele unidimensionnel d'echauffement de solide couple a des lois cinetiques de type arrhenius. Les resultats ont ete compares avec succes a plusieurs essais mettant en jeu deux types de cables electriques communement utilises dans les centrales nucleaires francaises. L'etape suivante a consiste a determiner un protocole d'essais experimentaux afin de caracteriser, d'une part, l'echauffement et la perte de masse d'un cable et, d'autre part, la puissance liberee par la combustion des gaz de pyrolyse selon l'avancement de la degradation thermique du cable. Le principal banc experimental employe pour ces essais presente l'avantage de separer la pyrolyse en phase condensee et la combustion en phase gazeuse. Ces resultats constituent une premiere approche pour comprendre le couplage pyrolyse-combustion. Enfin, le comportement au feu d'une nappe de cables electriques a ete etudie grace au developpement d'une cellule d'essais en grandeur semi-reelle.

The importance of preceptorships, as a mechanism to transfer knowledge of evidence-based nursing practices and developing confidence in nurses, is well-known. However, the effectiveness of preceptorships to develop confidence in perinatal nurses who provide safe care to childbearing women is unknown. Guided by Kolb's model of experiential learning and using a narrative analysis approach, this study examined perinatal nurse residents' perceptions of experiences that enhanced learning and developed confidence during preceptorship. Twenty nurses who completed a perinatal nurse residency of 18 weeks or more in the past 12 months participated in audiotaped, structured interviews. Their answers were transcribed and data analysis software was used to organize the interview data. Words and sentences were analyzed for themes. The following 7 themes emerged as confidence-building elements in perinatal nurse residency programs: 'break larger tasks into smaller steps,' 'offer encouragement,' 'provide written instructions,' 'push me a little,' 'practice with drills and quizzes,' 'show me, then let me do it,' and 'debrief after the day'. Nurses' perceptions of incivility from health care providers and experienced staff nurses was an unexpected finding. Preceptors, educators, and facilities can use these themes to standardize and strengthen perinatal preceptorships. This study has implications for positive social change by ensuring that perinatal nurse residents benefit from preceptorships that focus on the best ways to teach, instill confidence, and subsequently, pregnant women will receive safe, evidence-based care from a confident perinatal nurse. Organizations can use the results to structure quality perinatal preceptorships, retain confident nurses at the bedside, and enhance patient satisfaction.

Ce travail propose une réflexion sur le principe féminin dans l’œuvre romanesque d’Ernest J. Gaines : Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, A Gathering of Old Men, In My Father’s House, A Lesson Before Dying, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Il tente de définir le sujet féminin et d’identifier ses principes moraux [par opposition aux principes masculins]. Il s’articule autour de trois parties et dévoile une évolution du principe féminin dans l’œuvre gainesienne. De Catherine Carmier à The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, le principe féminin se fortifie. Dans les premiers romans, le féminin agit conformément au devoir [et par devoir], il prône un idéal de vertu, une sagesse qui l’empêche de créer. Le féminin s’affirme alors progressivement par le biais du langage dans un face à face avec le masculin et déconstruit l’idéologie blanche. Ce travail explore la violence de la construction anormale du sujet noir et les stratégies de déconstruction du mythe de la suprématie blanche. L’analyse de la libération identitaire révèle une déstabilisation des frontières du genre. Face au masculin dévirilisé, le féminin se virilise et relève la féminité du masculin. Enfin, dans le roman The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, le féminin devient militantisme et activisme. La mère de la communauté noire, s’identifiant à la loi Divine de la famille, parvient à créer, à s’imposer, à transmettre des principes moraux à des hommes en devenir. Les destins du féminin et le masculin sont alors en miroir : ils travaillent pour obtenir la reconnaissance de l’homme blanc, se perfectionnent. Ce travail révèle l’idée de la mort digne, idée d’une liberté qui s’affirme dans la négativité
This thesis studies the principles of the feminine in Ernest J. Gaines’ six novels: Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, A Gathering of Old Men, In My Father’s House, A Lesson Before Dying and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. It defines the feminine subject and identifies its moral principles. There is a gradual evolution of the feminine in the works of Ernest J. Gaines. From Catherine Carmier to The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, the feminine strengthens itself. In the first novels, the feminine acts out of duty, advocates wisdom, which prevents it from creating things. The feminine gradually reaffirms itself through language and faces the masculine. This work explores the violence of the abnormal construction of the Black self and the strategies of deconstruction of the myth of white supremacy. The analysis of the reconstruction of the self shows a redefinition of genres. The feminine is virilized and feminizes the masculine. Finally, in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, the feminine becomes militant and activist. The mother of the black community, identifying herself with the female Divine Law of the family, embodies female agency; she raises her sons and teaches them moral principles. The feminine and the masculine function as mirror images of each other; they work to get the recognition of the White man, and they seek to improve themselves. This study highlights the idea of dignity in death, of freedom which asserts itself in negativity

Um dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, wird zukünftig der Schwerpunkt der GAIR-Mitteilungen deutlich stärker auf den fachlichen Diskurs gelegt. Das neue Format deckt neueste Entwicklungen in Gesetzgebung und Rechtsprechung aller Rechtsgebiete im In- und Ausland ab, soweit sie das Recht islamisch geprägter Staaten oder aber Menschen aus solchen Staaten betreffen. Wesentlich ergänzt wird dieses Angebot durch Tagungsberichte, Rezensionen und Aufsätze, in denen auch islamrechtliche Fragestellungen diskutiert werden. Eine wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft kann ihren inneren Austausch und ihre Wirkung nach Außen nur sicherstellen, wenn sie ihren Mitgliedern und auswärtigen Interessierten ein zeitgemäßes Diskussionsforum bietet. Angesichts des gestiegenen Bedarfs an zuverlässigen Informationen über das islamische Recht und die rechtlichen Entwicklungen in islamisch geprägten Staaten besteht seitens der GAIR die Notwendigkeit, hierzu einen verantwortungsvollen Beitrag zu leisten. Um dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, wird zukünftig der Schwerpunkt der GAIR-Mitteilungen deutlich stärker auf den fachlichen Diskurs gelegt. Das neue Format deckt neueste Entwicklungen in Gesetzgebung und Rechtsprechung aller Rechtsgebiete im In- und Ausland ab, soweit sie das Recht islamisch geprägter Staaten oder aber Menschen aus solchen Staaten betreffen. Wesentlich ergänzt wird dieses Angebot durch Tagungsberichte, Rezensionen und Aufsätze, in denen auch islamrechtliche Fragestellungen diskutiert werden. Ab 2010 wird darüber hinaus eine eigene Rubrik „Rechtsvergleichung“ aufgenommen, die theoretisch-methodische Aspekte aufgreifen soll. Eine wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft kann ihren inneren Austausch und ihre Wirkung nach Außen nur sicherstellen, wenn sie ihren Mitgliedern und auswärtigen Interessierten ein zeitgemäßes Diskussionsforum bietet. Angesichts des gestiegenen Bedarfs an zuverlässigen Informationen über das islamische Recht und die rechtlichen Entwicklungen in islamisch geprägten Staaten besteht seitens der GAIR die Notwendigkeit, hierzu einen verantwortungsvollen Beitrag zu leisten. Um dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, wird zukünftig der Schwerpunkt der GAIR-Mitteilungen deutlich stärker auf den fachlichen Diskurs gelegt. Das neue Format deckt neueste Entwicklungen in Gesetzgebung und Rechtsprechung aller Rechtsgebiete im In- und Ausland ab, soweit sie das Recht islamisch geprägter Staaten oder aber Menschen aus solchen Staaten betreffen. Wesentlich ergänzt wird dieses Angebot durch Tagungsberichte, Rezensionen und Aufsätze, in denen auch islamrechtliche Fragestellungen diskutiert werden. Ab 2010 wird darüber hinaus eine eigene Rubrik „Rechtsvergleichung“ aufgenommen, die theoretisch-methodische Aspekte aufgreifen soll. Eine wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft kann ihren inneren Austausch und ihre Wirkung nach Außen nur sicherstellen, wenn sie ihren Mitgliedern und auswärtigen Interessierten ein zeitgemäßes Diskussionsforum bietet. Angesichts des gestiegenen Bedarfs an zuverlässigen Informationen über das islamische Recht und die rechtlichen Entwicklungen in islamisch geprägten Staaten besteht seitens der GAIR die Notwendigkeit, hierzu einen verantwortungsvollen Beitrag zu leisten. Um dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, wird zukünftig der Schwerpunkt der GAIR-Mitteilungen deutlich stärker auf den fachlichen Diskurs gelegt. Das neue Format deckt neueste Entwicklungen in Gesetzgebung und Rechtsprechung aller Rechtsgebiete im In- und Ausland ab, soweit sie das Recht islamisch geprägter Staaten oder aber Menschen aus solchen Staaten betreffen. Wesentlich ergänzt wird dieses Angebot durch Tagungsberichte, Rezensionen und Aufsätze, in denen auch islamrechtliche Fragestellungen diskutiert werden. Ab 2010 wird darüber hinaus eine eigene Rubrik „Rechtsvergleichung“ aufgenommen, die theoretisch-methodische Aspekte aufgreifen soll.
