Abstract:
This study examines the application of an IRT analysis of words on lists including the General Service List (GSL), New General Service List (NGSL), Academic Word List (AWL), New Academic Word List (NAWL), and TOEIC Service List (TSL). By comparing line graphs, density distribution graphs, and boxplots for the average difficulty of each word list to related lists, we can get a visualization of the data’s distribution. Japanese EFL students responded to one or more of 84 Yes/No test forms compiled from 5,880 unique real words and 2,520 nonwords. The real words were analyzed using Winsteps (Linacre, 2005) resulting in IRT estimates for each word. By summing the difficulties of each word, we can calculate the average difficulty of each word list which can then be used to rank the lists. In effect, the process supports the concurrent validity of the lists. The analysis indicates the word family approach results in more difficult word lists. The mean difficulties of the GSL and the BNC_COCA appear to be more divergent and more difficult particularly over the first 4000 words, possibly due to the use of Bauer and Nation’s (1993) Affix Level 6 definition for their compilation. Finally, just as we should expect word lists for beginners to have higher frequency words than subsequent lists, we should also expect them to be easier with more words known to learners. This can be seen with the gradual but marked difference between the different word lists of the NGSL and its supplemental SPs.

Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to find out the intrinsic elements and the moral values in Totto Chan: the Little Girl at the Window novel. This research employed descriptive qualitative as the method. The data were collected by using library research. Intrinsic elements involved theme, character and characterization, plot, setting and point of view. Moral values in this novel were honesty, willingness to take responsibilities, independence and humility. Research result showed that the education was applied well in Tomoe Gakuen. Tomoe Gakuen was the real form of a wanted dream school. Mr. Kobayashi asthe headmaster managed to create his dream school in Japan, even in the World War II period.

Abstract:
The purpose of the paper is to examine how water scarcity affects women in Gakuto and strategies they use to adapt to water scarcity. Water is a basic necessity and a requirement for all according to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Botswana is one of the countries faced with water scarcity. The key geographical features of low rainfalls and semi-arid conditions contribute to the scarcity of water resources in the country. The paper highlights challenges faced by women in Gakuto village and strategies they use to cope with water scarcity. A conceptual framework has been used to discuss the relevant concepts that underpin the research. These are water scarcity, adaptation and coping, vulnerability. Data was collected during a site visit through semi structured interviews, field observations and secondary data sources from the government reports and publications. Using semi structured interviews, 23 women from 12 households were interviewed to outline challenges they face in accessing water and sanitation in the village. A traditional leader was also involved to outline the situation of water access in the village. Results show that over 80% of participants travel more than 1km from their households to access water. According to World Health Organisation, in Africa, women walk an average of 10 km per day collecting water. Data was coded and analysed to outline an overview of the various coping and adaptation strategies that participants employ at household level. Majority of them use rainwater, change water routine, access water through social networking and reuse at household level.

Abstract:
Focusing on his experiences and research on the apparent interaction between native-speakerism and nationalism, Martin Cater addresses how learner beliefs in eikaiwa can be shaped by larger influences from the ELT industry and Japanese society. He discusses how native-speakerism and the Japanese nationalist ideology of nihonjinron can be seen in the stated beliefs of Japanese English learners and how these ideas are sometimes promoted by eikaiwa schools. However, he also gives examples from his personal experience of how these problematic ideologies can be disrupted through grassroots action by teachers.

Abstract:
Assessing student presentations can be made more reliable with video-recording and post-performance rating. Further, self assessment and peer assessment can aid in the learning process by students when using specific, easy-to-understand rubrics. A ten-year action research study involved video-recorded performance assessment tasks using a free, open-source Moodle module developed by Sapporo Gakuin University. The Video Assessment Module (VAM) allowed teachers to video record English presentations and upload them to the module for students for self and peer assessment on specific rubrics using qualitative and quantitative criteria. When compared to paper rubrics, the VAM reduced teacher management time and students could use out-of-class time to assess asynchronously without time pressure. Results showed that there was a higher difference in teacher variance for self assessment when compared to teacher variance with peer assessment. Qualitative and quantitative results reported value in using the tool by both students and teachers. This study also showed that students can be trained to use online rubrics to score presentations efficiently, giving further validity for using and developing online modules for video assessment.

Abstract:
Masahiro Yoshida of the University of Tokushima described (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 5021) the Pt-mediated rearrangement of alkynyl oxiranes such as 1 to the furan 2. Roman Dembinski of Oakland University reported (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 5881) a related zinc-mediated rearrangement of propargyl ketones to furans. The cyclization of aryloxy ketones such as 3 to the benzofuran 4 developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 6579) by Ikyon Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology is likely proceeding by a Friedel-Crafts mechanism. Sandro Cacchi and Giancarlo Fabrizi of Università degli Studi “La Sapienza”, Roma, observed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 2629) that base converted the enamine 5 to the pyrrole 6. Alternatively, oxidation of 5 with CuBr led to a pyridine. Zhuang-ping Zhuan of Xiamen University prepared (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2008, 350, 2778) pyrroles such as 9 by condensing an alkynyl carbinol 7 with a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound. Richard C. Larock of Iowa State University found (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 6666) that combination of an alkynyl ketone 10 with 11 followed by oxidation with I-Cl led to the pyrazole 12. The “click” condensation of azides with alkynes, leading to the 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3- triazole, has proven to be a powerful tool for combinatorial synthesis. Valery V. Fokin of Scripps/La Jolla and Zhenyang Lin and Guochen Jia of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 8923) a complementary approach, using Ru catalysts to prepare 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3- triazoles. Remarkably, internal alkynes participate, and, as in the conversion of 13 to 15, propargylic alcohols direct the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition. A variety of methods have been put forward for functionalizing pyridines. Sukbok Chang of KAIST described (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 9254) the direct oxidative homologation of a pyridine N -oxide 16 to give the unsaturated ester 18. Jonathan Clayden of the University of Manchester observed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 3567) that metalation of 19 gave an anion that rearranged to 20 with complete retention of enantiomeric excess. Shigeo Katsumura of Kwansei Gakuin University developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 4349) an intriguing three-component coupling, combining 21, 22, and methanesulonamide 23 to give the pyridine 24.
