Abstract:
A song can manifest itself as a critical instrument in the vast socio-political atmosphere. Often times a song conceals its real meaning within layers of linguistic elements and through visual communication. Upon the release of Childish Gambino’s This is America (2018), the music video has been assumed widely assumed to contain semiotic elements that criticize the injustice politics of race in America. To dig deeper into this assertion, we use Machin’s Lyrics Analysis (2010) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar approach (2006) to analyze the illustrated semiotic elements. Both frameworks are two Multimodal Discourse Analysis approaches that explore interdisciplinary analysis in the discourse-oriented research. This article finds that Gambino does question the practice of black discrimination through gun and police violence in present America by utilizing distant words and excessive gestures in his visual communication as a diversion. They are purposefully placed to gain a profound observation from the audience, and thus able to spark a conversation regarding the issue in a greater scale. Furthermore, it is found that This is America applies comical aspects in the visual elements as a layering device. Through humorous semiotic elements, Gambino is discovered to highlight the commodification of black art in his music video.

Bob Marley says one good thing about music—when it hits you, you feel no pain. So hit me with music. On the transition of Aretha Franklin, and the vitriolic trolling of her funeral and Childish Gambino 2019 Grammy award winning song and record of the year for “ This is America,” this piece is using music as a conceptual frame for understanding the pain of Black people in the United States. Recently, musicians Beyoncé, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pink, and many others have used their music to contest inequality in America. I grew up in Jamaica on Motown, Country, and Reggae music. This is what Aretha and many other musicians have meant to me.

Abstract:
This study is aimed to identify the verbal sign used in the music video “This is America” by Childish Gambino. This study used a qualitative library research approach. Based on that approach, the data were described according to the theories applied in this study. The data collected by note taking and documentation methods. The first theory applied in this study was the verbal sign proposed by Dyer. It was used to analyze the verbal sign in the music video. The second theory applied was the theory of meaning proposed by Leech to analyze the meaning used in the music video. The results showed that the meaning of the lyrics refers to the African American society’s problem of racism, police brutality, violence and gun possession. The lyrics contained the connotative and conceptual meaning.

Abstract:
‘This is America’ music video which released in May 2018 has been ranked at the best songs of 2018 and marked to be the most viral music video where gun shooting scenes and other controversial scenes are clearly portrayed. It has become a hot issue to be discussed in a number of mass media in America and has reached a million viewers on YouTube. Childish Gambino as the singer and songwriter put some metaphors sequences about criticism on races and the discrimination experienced by black American people. Roland Barthes semiotic approach is used to analyze visual scenes messages along with the myths. The video has portrayed strong scenes about Black people as a minority. There were 7 scenes that had been analyzed. All scenes represented racism, riots, hedonism, and social injustice to black people.

Abstract:
The fact that music evoke emotions inside us is something that probably all of us are willing to agree on. Music can make us laugh, cry, dance - every possible expression of emotions can be created through it. Perhaps may the ultimate song be the one that make us feel all of these emotions at once, and make us want to listen to it, over and over again. Some songs and music videos blow up and create millions or even billions of views. At times, music can be more than just a song, making people want to sit down and discuss its meaning for hours. The song This is America and its music video is a good example of this phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to explore the elements of this particular video, how it alludes with the current political context and the aftermath that have aroused from it. To explore the reason behind the enormous popularity of this video, we composed a comprehensive research question, that goes “How are we to understand the meaning in This is America?”. From the background of our research summary, we were able to find that the ambiguousness and the potential of a wide interpretation of a popular cultural phenomenon, is what lays the ground for its popularity. Through history, it can be said that music, that have been made from alienation, have a possibility of becoming even more popular. With our research summary in hand, we broke down the music video This is America into sections, in order to learn its meaning and signification, and to understand its popularity. The video and its lyrics, brings up subjects such as gun politics in the United States, the remaining traces of slavery, and how people of colour still suffer from oppression. The enormous popularity of the video probably comes from the wide range of subjects and signs that it addresses. Basically anyone who watches it will see something they recognize, regardless of if the person is five or 105 years old. Children recognize the dances from the video game Fortnite, while the elder recognize the character Jim Crow, who they associate with the segregation in the United States in the beginning of the 20th century. A music video can tell us more than we originally think, which is also what this essay points to. If given an additional look, a music video might be able to give an insight to a world that is unknown to us. It may even open the door to provide a portrayal of society that regular media rarely presents.

Abstract:

In this text about the mathematics education in a primary school in the Gambia, I am researching what this mathematics education consists of and what surrounding factors might be affecting it. The pupils of the school in question speak several different languages. This language situation is one of the factors considered in the research. A connection between the real life led by the pupils and their mathematics education was a second factor. The third factor is financial resources or the lack thereof. I wanted to see if a lack of sufficient financial resources was visible in forming the education and the teaching of the pupils. The teaching of mathematics in the school seemed to be based on behaviourism, but could perhaps take benefit from the ethnomathematics perspective. Through observations, analyzing documents and an interview, I realized that the government had set ambitious objectives for the teachers to follow, but due to lack of economical resources, as far as my study found, these are not achieved. As ambitious objectives, which are not followed by sufficient funding is an issue not only applicable in Gambian schools and since Sweden is a growing multicultural society, I can use my knowledge from this study in my work in Swedish schools.

Abstract:
Humans have a tendency to engage in economically irrational behaviors such as gambling, which typically leads to long-term financial losses. While there has been much research on human gambling behavior, relatively little work has been done to explore the evolutionary origins of this behavior. To examine the adaptive pressures that may have led to this seemingly irrational behavior in humans, nonhuman primates were tested to explore their reactions to gambling type scenarios. Several experiments based on traditional human economic experiments were adapted for use with a wider variety of primate species including chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys. This allowed for testing multiple species using similar methodologies in order to make more accurate comparisons of species abilities. This series of tasks helps to elucidate risky decision-making behavior in three primate species.

Cormack, Anne Margaret. "Gambling against Rawls." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2007. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/8543/.

Full text
Abstract:
In A Theory of Justice (1971) John Rawls attempted to solve the problem of distributive justice by combining self-interest, ignorance and risk-aversion. He argued that if self-interested persons in a situation of uncertainty imposed by a veil of ignorance were choosing principles for the basic structure of society, then they would be risk-adverse and choose two principles – The Principle of Equal Liberty and the Difference Principle. Critics have argued against this risk-adverse element of Rawls’ theory but those critics as well as Rawls made certain presuppositions about risk-aversion, risk-taking and gambling. This thesis also examines the risk-aversion in Rawls’ theory but addresses the previous shortfall by exploring the issue of risk and gambling in two interrelated ways. It applies a Foucauldian approach to the history of risk and gambling in order to contextualise the current views and then investigates the contemporary meaning by drawing on research leading up to the UK Gambling Act 2005. Drawing on these findings it argues that not only might risk-taking occur in the original position but that different types of participants could show different degrees of risk-taking behaviour. By exploring the theoretical debates between essentialism and anti-essentialism, it further argues that it is unlikely that the veil of ignorance would be able to screen out those differences. It then employs theories of identity and difference in the work of Heidegger, Deleuze and Lyotard in an attempt to overcome that weakness in Rawls’ theory but finds that this may not be possible. After highlighting a connection between impartiality and gambling, it concludes, in contrast to Rawls, that risk-taking rather than risk-aversion lies at the heart of social justice. The implication of this reversal is that it may have an impact on policy-decisions in other areas of the justice system.

Abstract:
Abstract Musu Bakoto Sawo takes readers through her personal journey as a former child bride. In demonstrating the relationship between menarche and child marriage, she explains how parents deny girls their right to education by sending them to their marital homes prematurely. Sawo explores the factors that contribute to the high prevalence of child marriage in The Gambia and identifies mechanisms that support curbing it. The chapter then moves to drawing attention to her activism and work in debunking social norms that prevent girls from reaching their potentials. Sawo concludes by sharing her optimism in the eradication of harmful traditional practices in The Gambia and her dream for Gambian women and girls: empowering, uplifting, and safe spaces.

Abstract:
The discovery of natural local resources for tanning and coloring agents are growing dramatically to sustain a cleaner leather manufacturing technology. Gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb) has been found potential as tannin and dyestuffs for leather and textile industry. Therefore, to explore these issues, a combination tanning and finishing system were evaluated to observe the efficiency of this extract on leather processing. A combination tanning system based on chrome or glutaraldehyde – gambir and followed by gambir as coloring agent with different concentrations (100 - 200 parts/L) have been applied. In this FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) analysis of gambir extract showed the presence of phenolic hydroxyl group. Our results revealed that chrome - gambir and glutaraldehyde - gambir finished leather product with 150 parts/L of gambir extract showed excellent rub fastness, color fastness to perspiration and washing. Most of the result values obtained were generally at satisfactory levels which were between 3/4 and 5 fastness values. Visual evaluation reported that chrome-gambir finished leather product with 150 parts/L of gambir extract exhibited better uniformity of colour fastness.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: We were interested in studying the prevalence and correlates of disordered gambling among people with psychotic disorders. Participants: Adults (18-65 years) with psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, Psychosis NOS, first episode psychosis or first episode schizophrenia, early psychosis or early schizophrenia, schizophreniform psychosisschi-zophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, psychosis NOS). Indication: Disordered gambling or pathological gambling or gambling disorder. Comparator: Adults with psychotic disorders who do not have disordered gambling or healthy controls. Outcome: Prevalence and correlates. To investigate these issues further, we systematically reviewed published studies that report an association between psychosis and disordered gambling. We aimed to summarize the rates and correlates of disordered gambling among people with psychotic illnesses. We hypothesized that the rates would be higher than seen in the general population. In keeping with reports on gambling in general, we also hypothesized that gambling disorder in psychosis would be associated with being male, younger age, lower education, and lower socio-economic status.

Stark, Sasha, Heather Wardle, and Isabel Burdett. Examining lottery play and risk among young people in Great Britain. GREO, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.33684/2021.002.

Abstract:
Purpose & Significance: Despite the popularity of lottery and scratchcards and some evidence of gambling problems among players, limited research focuses on the risks of lottery and scratchcard play and predictors of problems, especially among young people. The purpose of this project is to examine whether lottery and scratchcard participation is related to gambling problems among 16-24 year olds in Great Britain and whether general and mental health and gambling behaviours explain this relationship. Methodology: Samples of 16-24 year olds were pooled from the 2012, 2015, and 2016 Gambling in England and Scotland: Combined Data from the Health Survey for England and the Scottish Health Survey (n=3,454). Bivariate analyses and Firth method logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between past-year lottery and scratchcard participation and gambling problems, assessing the attenuating role of mental wellbeing, mental health disorders, self-assessed general health, and playing other games in past year. Results: There is a significant association between scratchcard play and gambling problems. The association somewhat attenuated but remained significant after taking into account wellbeing, mental health disorders, general health, and engagement in other gambling activities. Findings also show that gambling problems are further predicted by age (20-24 years), gender (male), lower wellbeing, and playing any other gambling games. Implications: Results are valuable for informing youth-focused education, decisions around the legal age for National Lottery products, and the development of safer gambling initiatives for high risk groups and behaviours, such as scratchcard play.
