This study explores the intriguing connections between anthroponymy and chess, revealing how the names of chess openings offer captivating insights into the game’s history and culture. Drawing inspiration from the popularity of chess streamers on YouTube, the research adopts a qualitative content analysis approach to examine the linguistic and cultural origins of commonly used chess openings. Abstract: This essay considers how a particular trace of Faulkner’s 1942 short-story draft of “Knight’s Gambit,” which he failed to place in any mass-market magazine, clarifies the stakes of his final 1949 novella with the same title. In the draft, the key motive for Max Harriss’s attempted murder of Gualdes (Gualdres in the published version) involves the repayment of a gambling debt. In revising, Faulkner recognized the weakness of the original motive. But while the novella completely changes Max’s motive, it does not erase male gambling debts as much as it displaces them throughout the narr

The gender-equality paradox refers to the puzzling finding that societies with more gender equality demonstrate larger gender differences across a range of phenomena, most notably in the proportion of women who pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. The present investigation demonstrates across two different measures of gender equality that this paradox extends to chess participation ( N = 803,485 across 160 countries; age range: 3–100 years), specifically that women participate more often in countries with less gender equality. The article is devoted to reflections on where digitalization and artificial intelligence can lead to modern society. The author metaphorically compares the influence of digitalization on human thinking with a gambit - the beginning of a chess game, in which a piece or pawn is sacrificed for the sake of a quick transition to the attack, ensuring a clear victory. A kind of “sacrifice” in this case is human thinking and intellect. Parallels between the world and a chessboard are not uncommon. Two of these figures, the art critic Pavel Muratov and the poet Vladislav Khodasevich, present sophisticated analyses of cinema's place within an Americanized mass culture, which lead them to pessimistic conclusions about the place of art in European exile. Abstract The wound that Dionisio Jaruco or Gamboa received in the knife fight with the musician José Dolores Pimienta did not prove to be inevitably fatal. The blow was not delivered with the end of the knife but with the edge, and although the weapon separated the muscles of the left side of his chest diagonally, at the height of the nipple, it did not injure any delicate bodily part in its long trajectory. Hence, even though he fell to the ground on his back, it was not in fact because the wound deprived him of all his strength. He stumbled over a paving stone as he dodged the blow, and what
