Full textIn the United States, gambling on sports is a widespread and popular activity. Yet, the extent of that popularity is largely unknown because the practice is illegal, with the exception of a handful of states. To determine the scale of this market, I construct a series panel regression models that explain the size of the legal sports betting market in Australia using continuous macroeconomic and behavioral variables in addition to dummy variables signaling regulatory shifts. Using the relationships between these variables and sports betting expenditure, I will estimate the size of the United States market on a state-by-state basis. After sizing the U.S. market, I will briefly discuss the key finding of the synergistic relationship between sports betting and Internet as well as the inevitable tradeoffs between the economic benefits and consequences of legalization

Full textGames of chance were known and practiced by man since the earliest civilizations. But all the way since the greco-roman antiquity, these games have attracted the ire of moralists, clergymen and legislators, each for their own motives. Strict laws were enacted by the Antiquity legislators, laws that were later upheld by canonists and jurists of the Old law, as well as the civil Code editors, in order to eliminate, or at least confine this recreational practice. But the human desire to enjoy these games of chance was stronger than these laws, and the practice survived. Over the course of the 20th century, and while certain States around the world chose absolute prohibition, others, like France, opted for a controlled authorization under the auspices of the State. Thus was created the prohibition-monopoly-exception triptych, under which gambling grew considerably. And when the technological development allowed games of chance to be provided through the internet, the gambling industry reached in France and around the world, limits never known before in the course of the human history. But this exceptional development has brought new challenges along, mainly in the finance and security areas, but also at the European legal level where the French monopoly model was criticized. To take up these challenges, new laws were enacted in recent years. But all fell short of the challenges scale. The task was initiated, but most of the work remains to be done

.002). Also, results demonstrated that sport gambling students and non-gambling students showed significant differences in financial risk-taking attitudes (p<
.01). Personality and gender variables accounted for a significant amount on the financial risk-taking attitude of the non-gambling subjects. Personality, gambling motivations and gender accounted for a significant amount on the financial risk-taking attitude of sport gambling subjects. Sport gambling students showed no significant difference in their gambling motivations according to their gender (p>
.01). Sport gambling students were primarily motivated with intrinsic motivating factors of gambling. Personality, financial risk-taking attitude and gambling experience accounted for a significant amount on the gambling motivations of sport gambling students. Finally, this study pointed that university students who were more extraverted and more open were more prone to gambling on sport events and were more permissive towards financial risk-taking. Additionally, results revealed that enjoyment, amusement and learning were the primary motivating factors that lead university students towards sport gambling.

Full textHistorically as regards gambling, there is a homogeneity of national laws because most regulations are built around a state monopoly and / or grant of an exclusive license. The particularity of this economic activity has been recognized by the European Justice Court allowing it to derogate, under certain conditions, the principles of freedom to provide services and freedom of establishment. The advent of online gambling, however, changed the understanding of the sector due to the transnational nature of this new activity. In this regard, States have attempted to provide answers to issues related to money laundering, consumer protection, match fixing and the existence of illegal websites that pose. The heterogeneity of the solutions does not allow to effectively respond to these pitfalls or to satisfy the requirements defined by the Treaties. Therefore, the European Commission brought infringement proceedings against some states and has published a Green Paper to search for tracks that would ensure a consensus among Member States without it having to intervene more through of European regulation. However, many obstacles from European laws available to the European Commission a limited space of proposals that aim primarily at strengthening cooperation between regulatory authorities and probably will not help to solve the above issues. It is in this context that our research work will enroll. Also, having studied European positive law, we will focus, from a comparative law study of the main existing legal models on the territory of the Union (Belgian law, English law, French law and Italian law) to determine an instrument of European harmonization to ensure a high level of consumer protection and fair competition between gambling operators

The dissertation is the result of a research about the lotto gambling in the territory of Salvador city during the last terms of 2002 and 2003. The methodology basis was inductive with documental, bibliographical and field research. The main goal of the research was to categorize Salvador’s urban inner space from the analysis of the relations among the several different neighborhoods over the city through the lotto gambling. The different types of games are: Numbers Forecast (Mega Sena, Lotomania, Quina and Dupla Sena), Tickets (Instantânea and Federal) and Sports Forecast (Loteca and Lotogol). These different types of games enabled the analysis of the different kinds of people profiles that are attracted do these games. With these elements at hand, some of Salvador’s territory characteristics were described answering the research’s main questioning: the lotto gambling in the different neighborhoods of Salvador may or may not help to draw the territorial dynamics and the territoriality of Salvador? The theoretical basis and the field work had its development mainly from the researches of Walter Christaller, with these concepts: territory, territory dynamics’ relations and urban center. At the end was seen the lotto gambling spots identified, map and classified by neighborhood e by the type of game in four categories: the 25% most visited, the ones with 25% to 50%, the responsible for 50% a 75% of visits and the ones with 75% to 100% of visits. From the 25% most visited to the last (75% to 100%) it is possible to see a decay of centrality in the neighborhoods and also a decay of importance in the population of Salvador. That shows the hierarchy of neighborhoods in the city and also the dependency of one another in their relations. Confirming in this way the central places theory referred from Walter Christaller.

Full textIn this dissertation, I study three topics in microeconomics — targeting, gambling and retirement saving. The first chapter, based on joint work with Francis Bloch, studies the friend-based ranking approach to targeting. A social planner aims to extract a ranking of individuals by asking each individual to rank his or her friends. We study how the structure of the community’s social network determines the planner’s ability to extract a truthful and efficient ranking. Our analysis highlights the importance of common friends. The second chapter, based on joint work with Joshua Blumenstock, studies online sports betting, which has gained widespread popularity in Kenya and other East African countries. We use a large dataset of sports betting transactions to provide evidence that gamblers can become overconfident in their ability to predict the outcome of matches. We argue the overconfidence persists because gamblers overestimate how frequently their friends win and because gamblers overweight past success relative to past failure. In the third and final chapter, I use a field experiment to study the impact of providing employees at a large South African company with a retirement calculator on retirement saving. The calculator provides projections of retirement income and helps to counter misperceptions of exponential growth. Even though most employees save at the minimum rate and the intervention was timed to coincide with salary increases, the calculator did not lead to large increases in saving

This study adopted the gambling passion scale (Rousseau et al., 2002) and the dualistic model of passion (Vallerand et al., 2003) to research levels of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) for gambling passion and viewing passion among local players of Taiwan's legal sports lottery and illegal sports bettors. Also examined their gambling behavior and viewing behavior. Besides comparing the two passion types for each gambling group, it examined the connection between gambling passion and viewing passion. Questionnaires were conducted in Taipei and New Taipei cities on January 2011. An empirical test with 221 valid samples was conducted by SPSS12.0 to analyze descriptive statistics, comparative differences and regression analysis. The results have four parts. First, The average values of sports lottery Participants’ HP toward gambling is higher than OP toward gambling. The average values of illegal sports bettors’ HP toward gambling is closer to OP toward gambling. Second, Two types of sports bettors’ HP for sports viewerships is higher than OP for sports viewerships. SUMMARY According to the Liberal Times, Fubon Bank, which owned the first sports lottery franchise, was expecting 19 billion sales in the first six years. However, sales in six years turned out to be less than 10 billion, which failed to meet even 50% of Fubon Bank’s target. In addition, its purposes, including increasing taxes, supporting the development of the sport and cracking down on illegal gambling, also failed. Therefore, this study is an attempt to find the optimal combination for an “Online Gaming Platform” through a conjoint analysis. The thesis is based on the theory of product attributes and the theory of market segmentation. Initially, eleven product attributes were aggregated by interviewing active users. After the pilot test, it was found that the most important four product attributes include “Betting Odds,” “Legality,” “Winning condition,” and ”Convenience of Betting. ” Next, different levels were set for each product attribute. Finally, eight stimulus sets were designed as a formal questionnaire using SPSS. As a result, we found that the preference for product attributes is ranked as follows: “Legality,” “Betting Odds, ” “Winning condition,” and Convenience of Betting” and the optimal combination is “Betting Odds:1.97,” “Convenience of Betting: More than two,” “Legal,” and “Multiple bet option” was last. Finally, this thesis introduces demographic variables by which to analyze the preferences of different population segments. It is suggested that Taiwan Sports Lottery can begin with improving “Betting Odds” and” Winning condition.”

Sports lottery is popular in Taiwan because it is simple, pluralistic and beneficial for the public welfare. The outcome of betting is largely determined by whether the gamblers believe that the game is truly about probability or technically influenced. The fact that the sports lottery companies have made profits for a long while has eliminated the possibility that the design is more advantageous for the house. The non-existent causality believed by gamblers has created the idea of hot hand and gambler's fallacy, causing false perception on betting, thereby saving the house. The researchers spent two months observing and recording 15 sports lottery experts' reasoning for outcome judgment (winning or loss) and their accuracy rate. Next, according to their outcome judgment reasoning, the researchers found four key factors used by punters on betting, the earned run average (ERA) of the starters, the average scores from about ten matches, the ERA of the relievers, and the length of the winning streaks, and used these four factors as the base for formulating a questionnaire on the social judgment theory. This questionnaire was used to investigate punters' decision-making knowledge for outcome judgment. The study result suggests that overall, the length of the winning streaks is the most emphasized factor by the subjects, and the subjects believe that the higher the better (a positive correlation). The second is the ERA of the starters, which also displays a positive correlation. The remaining two are less valued. As a result, subjects are affected by hot hand rather than the gambler’s fallacy. Furthermore, the age, gender and number of bet do not have a significant impact on subjects’ outcome judgment. It can be found from the record that the average accuracy rate of the 15 sports lottery expert is 48% only. In other words, for sports lottery, winning or not is only a matter of chance rather than techniques.

The author of this study suggests that the government should speed up the process of setting up the sports lottery. It has been proven that the sports betting, given the condition that it is clean and fair, can increase the interests on sports industry wherever the professional sports is existed. Legalizing the sports betting is believed to be the only way to provide a secure and worry-free environment for the players and fans. It is also the way to keep the gang operations out of the professional baseball.
