In the United States, gambling on sports is a widespread and popular activity. Yet, the extent of that popularity is largely unknown because the practice is illegal, with the exception of a handful of states. To determine the scale of this market, I construct a series panel regression models that explain the size of the legal sports betting market in Australia using continuous macroeconomic and behavioral variables in addition to dummy variables signaling regulatory shifts. Using the relationships between these variables and sports betting expenditure, I will estimate the size of the United States market on a state-by-state basis. After sizing the U.S. market, I will briefly discuss the key finding of the synergistic relationship between sports betting and Internet as well as the inevitable tradeoffs between the economic benefits and consequences of legalization

Stanley, Matt. "Predictor Variables of Online Sports Problem Gambling by College Fraternity Members." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/897.

Full text
Abstract:
The quantitative study identified predictor variables of online sports problem gambling, as measured by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) among fraternity students at major college universities. The data were composed of 125 college fraternity students from ages 18 to 25 years of age. The average SOGS score was 1.776 with a standard deviation of 1.93. A SOGS score of 5 or greater indicates a probable problem gambler. The study used the Blaszczynski and Nower (2002) pathways model to determine how fraternity students could become problem gamblers. A stepwise regression model was run in SPSS using multiple independent variables taken from the survey to determine which of the independent variables were significantly correlated with the dependent variable, SOGS score. The study found 5 independent variables to be statistically significant: family history of gambling, competitive wagering, tobacco use, placing a wager with a friend, and wagering with funds acquired by illicit means. These 5 variables hold an R-squared (adjusted) of .26, which means that about 26% of the variability in the SOGS scores can be accounted for by these 5 variables. The study results supported the hypothesis that a complex set of social, biological, and psychological factors may contribute to determine how fraternity students could become problem gamblers. This study identified multiple individuals and parties who would benefit from further research about the ill-effects of online sports gambling among fraternity students.

Abstract:
The role risk taking has played in American history has helped shape current legislation concerning gambling. This thesis attempts to explain the discrepancies in legislation regarding distinct forms of gambling. While casinos are heavily regulated by state and federal laws, most statutes dealing with lotteries strive to regulate the activities of other parties instead of those of the lottery institutions. Incidentally, lotteries are the only form of gambling completely managed by the government. It can be inferred that the United States government is more concerned with people exploiting gambling than with the actual practice of wagering. In an effort to more fully understand the gambling debate, whether it should be allowed or banned, I examined different types of sources. Historical sources demonstrate how ingrained in American culture risk taking, the core of gambling, has been since the formation of this nation. Sources dealing with the economic implications of gambling were also studied. Additionally, sources dealings with the political and legal aspects of gambling were essential for this thesis. Legislature has tried to reconcile distinct problems associated with gambling, including corruption. For this reason sports gambling scandals and Mafia connections to gambling have also been examined. The American government has created much needed legislature to address different concerns relating to gambling. It is apparent that statutes will continue to be passed to help regulate the gambling industry. A possible consideration is the legalization of sports wagering to better regulate that sector of the industry.

Abstract:
Today' s Sport organizations faces many challenges; they are to compete not just only on the pitch but also in many other fields. The commercialization of sports has contributed to that these sport organizations has evolved to be more like a regular company rather than just a non-profit sport team. With it comes the importance of brand and sponsorship. Today in 2019 it’s more common than ever that companies that offers gambling sponsor sport organizations. Public debate about the topic has concluded that gambling addiction is a growing public health problem in Sweden. This creates a dilemma for sport clubs and their directors, funding from sponsors is crucial for the success of the team but at the same time these sport clubs need to care about their brand. The purpose of this study is to examine how the attitudes of the supporters is affected by the sponsor agreements with gambling companies. The study also aims at seeking understanding in how sport organizations act according with Corporate Social Responsibility and the ideals of sports. To examine this topic five different theories has been used, in which four are brand theories and one is the Corporate Social Responsibility. The brand theories are as follows: Brand Equity, Brand Relationships, Word of Mouth and Brand Image Transfer. This study uses Triangulation as a method in form as semi-structured interviews and surveys. The result from this study implies that supporters indeed has negative attitudes towards gambling organizations, these negative attitudes affect sport brands in a negative way. Sponsorship deals from other organizations that the supporters have positive attitudes towards can help to decrease these negative impacts. The result also implies that most of the supporters doesn’t have an opinion about the club’s sponsorship deals.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the relationship between mood and behavior of bettors using a dataset provided by a betting company, Chance a.s., which operates in the Czech Republic. We consider three types of proxies for the mood: weather in regions, sport successes and the results of elections, and we build a fixed effect model to estimate the effect of mood on betting behavior. We provide strong evidence that the weather proxy has a significant effect on daily turnovers of the betting company and there also seems to be an effect of sport optimism. On the contrary, we failed to find any impact of elections. The results show that better mood tend to discourage clients from sports and lottery betting which is consistent with the increase in risk aversion or the depletion of a common self-control resource due to active mood regulation attempts. Additionally, we provide an evidence that the intra-month cycle in turnovers corresponds to liquidity constraint of bettors which disproves the permanent income hypothesis.

Abstract:
Games of chance were known and practiced by man since the earliest civilizations. But all the way since the greco-roman antiquity, these games have attracted the ire of moralists, clergymen and legislators, each for their own motives. Strict laws were enacted by the Antiquity legislators, laws that were later upheld by canonists and jurists of the Old law, as well as the civil Code editors, in order to eliminate, or at least confine this recreational practice. But the human desire to enjoy these games of chance was stronger than these laws, and the practice survived. Over the course of the 20th century, and while certain States around the world chose absolute prohibition, others, like France, opted for a controlled authorization under the auspices of the State. Thus was created the prohibition-monopoly-exception triptych, under which gambling grew considerably. And when the technological development allowed games of chance to be provided through the internet, the gambling industry reached in France and around the world, limits never known before in the course of the human history. But this exceptional development has brought new challenges along, mainly in the finance and security areas, but also at the European legal level where the French monopoly model was criticized. To take up these challenges, new laws were enacted in recent years. But all fell short of the challenges scale. The task was initiated, but most of the work remains to be done

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was three-fold
to determine the personality and financial risk-taking attitude differences between sports gambling students and non-gambling students, to specify gambling motivations of the sport gambling students and to identify the relationship among personality traits, financial risk-taking attitude and gambling motivations of the students who gamble on sport events. The subject group of this research was composed of 1109 Middle East Technical University students who were participating in sport gambling activities (n=435) and who had never participated in sport gambling activities (n=674). While males were composing the 63.1% (n=700), females composed 36.9% (n=409) of the total research group. The mean age of the subject group was 21.77 ±
2.12. Big Five Personality Inventory (John, Donahue, &
Kentle, 1991), Investment Risk Attitude Scale (Nyhus, 1995) and Gambling Motivation Scales (Chantal, Vallerand and Vallieres, 1994) were used in the data collection process of the research. Results indicated that sport gambling students and non-gambling students showed significant differences in personality (p<
.01). There was significant differences between sport gambling students and non-gamblers in extraversion , conscientiousness and in openness trait (p<
.002). Also, results demonstrated that sport gambling students and non-gambling students showed significant differences in financial risk-taking attitudes (p<
.01). Personality and gender variables accounted for a significant amount on the financial risk-taking attitude of the non-gambling subjects. Personality, gambling motivations and gender accounted for a significant amount on the financial risk-taking attitude of sport gambling subjects. Sport gambling students showed no significant difference in their gambling motivations according to their gender (p>
.01). Sport gambling students were primarily motivated with intrinsic motivating factors of gambling. Personality, financial risk-taking attitude and gambling experience accounted for a significant amount on the gambling motivations of sport gambling students. Finally, this study pointed that university students who were more extraverted and more open were more prone to gambling on sport events and were more permissive towards financial risk-taking. Additionally, results revealed that enjoyment, amusement and learning were the primary motivating factors that lead university students towards sport gambling.

Abstract:
This study deals with sport's controversial dependence on the gambling market. The aim of the study is to analyse the comments of authorities, organisations and associations regarding the governmental public inquiry (SOU 2017:30) A re-regulated gambling market. The method used to collect and analyse data was a literature review in the form of a qualitative content analysis. The gambling market brings enormous amounts of money to the Swedish sports movement. The gambling policy that has been pursued in Sweden has encouraged the gambling market to return profit money to the sports movement. The problem has thus been to be able to apply national laws to foreign gambling companies. The advent of the Gambling Act (2018:1138) brought some significant changes, most notably the introduction of the licensing system and the 18 percent excise tax.  The results of the study show that the advent of the Gambling Act (2018:1138) has provided the opportunity for the state to collect taxes from foreign gambling companies and to be able to work more effectively against gambling abuse. Furthermore, it means creating a balance to meet the demand in the gambling market as well as being able to provide a high level of consumer protection.

Abstract:
Historically as regards gambling, there is a homogeneity of national laws because most regulations are built around a state monopoly and / or grant of an exclusive license. The particularity of this economic activity has been recognized by the European Justice Court allowing it to derogate, under certain conditions, the principles of freedom to provide services and freedom of establishment. The advent of online gambling, however, changed the understanding of the sector due to the transnational nature of this new activity. In this regard, States have attempted to provide answers to issues related to money laundering, consumer protection, match fixing and the existence of illegal websites that pose. The heterogeneity of the solutions does not allow to effectively respond to these pitfalls or to satisfy the requirements defined by the Treaties. Therefore, the European Commission brought infringement proceedings against some states and has published a Green Paper to search for tracks that would ensure a consensus among Member States without it having to intervene more through of European regulation. However, many obstacles from European laws available to the European Commission a limited space of proposals that aim primarily at strengthening cooperation between regulatory authorities and probably will not help to solve the above issues. It is in this context that our research work will enroll. Also, having studied European positive law, we will focus, from a comparative law study of the main existing legal models on the territory of the Union (Belgian law, English law, French law and Italian law) to determine an instrument of European harmonization to ensure a high level of consumer protection and fair competition between gambling operators

Abstract:
This Master´s thesis deals with the impact of legislative changes in the realm of lotteries on the funding of sports by municipalities. This issue is explored in the practical part and the town of Jindřichův Hradec was used as an example. The aim of the thesis is to characterize the system of the funding of sports. Also, the thesis compares and contrasts the legislative state of the Act No 202/1990 Coll. of lotteries and similar games before and after its amendment which came into force on 1st January 2012. Finally, the thesis describes and assesses the support of sport clubs and sport associations by the town of Jindřichův Hradec, including practical calculations of the effects the law amendment had on the local handball club and its financial resources. It was found out that, in comparison with similar-scale cities, the town of Jindřichův Hradec provided above-average financial resources into the field of sport. The comparison of subsidy rules revealed that the new subsidy program presents the improvement, especially with the following aspects. First, there is the introduction of the preferred sport clubs institution. Second, there is the cancellation of the initial division into categories. Third, there is the establishment of the independence of the grant committee members. After an initial hesitation, the town approached the division of the money gained from lotteries very transparently and it usually tied up the allocation of the revenues to a current subsidy system. As far as the local handball club is concerned, there was palpable a positive change between the periods before and after the amendment.

The dissertation is the result of a research about the lotto gambling in the territory of Salvador city during the last terms of 2002 and 2003. The methodology basis was inductive with documental, bibliographical and field research. The main goal of the research was to categorize Salvador’s urban inner space from the analysis of the relations among the several different neighborhoods over the city through the lotto gambling. The different types of games are: Numbers Forecast (Mega Sena, Lotomania, Quina and Dupla Sena), Tickets (Instantânea and Federal) and Sports Forecast (Loteca and Lotogol). These different types of games enabled the analysis of the different kinds of people profiles that are attracted do these games. With these elements at hand, some of Salvador’s territory characteristics were described answering the research’s main questioning: the lotto gambling in the different neighborhoods of Salvador may or may not help to draw the territorial dynamics and the territoriality of Salvador? The theoretical basis and the field work had its development mainly from the researches of Walter Christaller, with these concepts: territory, territory dynamics’ relations and urban center. At the end was seen the lotto gambling spots identified, map and classified by neighborhood e by the type of game in four categories: the 25% most visited, the ones with 25% to 50%, the responsible for 50% a 75% of visits and the ones with 75% to 100% of visits. From the 25% most visited to the last (75% to 100%) it is possible to see a decay of centrality in the neighborhoods and also a decay of importance in the population of Salvador. That shows the hierarchy of neighborhoods in the city and also the dependency of one another in their relations. Confirming in this way the central places theory referred from Walter Christaller.

Auclair-Vaillancourt, Amélie. "La dissociation : un phénomène normal ou pathologique?" Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/44504.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I study three topics in microeconomics — targeting, gambling and retirement saving. The first chapter, based on joint work with Francis Bloch, studies the friend-based ranking approach to targeting. A social planner aims to extract a ranking of individuals by asking each individual to rank his or her friends. We study how the structure of the community’s social network determines the planner’s ability to extract a truthful and efficient ranking. Our analysis highlights the importance of common friends. The second chapter, based on joint work with Joshua Blumenstock, studies online sports betting, which has gained widespread popularity in Kenya and other East African countries. We use a large dataset of sports betting transactions to provide evidence that gamblers can become overconfident in their ability to predict the outcome of matches. We argue the overconfidence persists because gamblers overestimate how frequently their friends win and because gamblers overweight past success relative to past failure. In the third and final chapter, I use a field experiment to study the impact of providing employees at a large South African company with a retirement calculator on retirement saving. The calculator provides projections of retirement income and helps to counter misperceptions of exponential growth. Even though most employees save at the minimum rate and the intervention was timed to coincide with salary increases, the calculator did not lead to large increases in saving

This study adopted the gambling passion scale (Rousseau et al., 2002) and the dualistic model of passion (Vallerand et al., 2003) to research levels of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) for gambling passion and viewing passion among local players of Taiwan's legal sports lottery and illegal sports bettors. Also examined their gambling behavior and viewing behavior. Besides comparing the two passion types for each gambling group, it examined the connection between gambling passion and viewing passion. Questionnaires were conducted in Taipei and New Taipei cities on January 2011. An empirical test with 221 valid samples was conducted by SPSS12.0 to analyze descriptive statistics, comparative differences and regression analysis. The results have four parts. First, The average values of sports lottery Participants’ HP toward gambling is higher than OP toward gambling. The average values of illegal sports bettors’ HP toward gambling is closer to OP toward gambling. Second, Two types of sports bettors’ HP for sports viewerships is higher than OP for sports viewerships. The average values of sports lottery participants’ viewing passion are higher than illegal sports bettors. Third, when sports bettors’ OP toward gambling is higher, they will spend more money which they won on gambling. Illegal sports bettors’ bet is higher than sports lottery participants. Fourth, Sports lottery participants’ viewing behavior is indeed higher than illegal sports bettors.

SUMMARY According to the Liberal Times, Fubon Bank, which owned the first sports lottery franchise, was expecting 19 billion sales in the first six years. However, sales in six years turned out to be less than 10 billion, which failed to meet even 50% of Fubon Bank’s target. In addition, its purposes, including increasing taxes, supporting the development of the sport and cracking down on illegal gambling, also failed. Therefore, this study is an attempt to find the optimal combination for an “Online Gaming Platform” through a conjoint analysis. The thesis is based on the theory of product attributes and the theory of market segmentation. Initially, eleven product attributes were aggregated by interviewing active users. After the pilot test, it was found that the most important four product attributes include “Betting Odds,” “Legality,” “Winning condition,” and ”Convenience of Betting. ” Next, different levels were set for each product attribute. Finally, eight stimulus sets were designed as a formal questionnaire using SPSS. As a result, we found that the preference for product attributes is ranked as follows: “Legality,” “Betting Odds, ” “Winning condition,” and Convenience of Betting” and the optimal combination is “Betting Odds:1.97,” “Convenience of Betting: More than two,” “Legal,” and “Multiple bet option” was last. Finally, this thesis introduces demographic variables by which to analyze the preferences of different population segments. It is suggested that Taiwan Sports Lottery can begin with improving “Betting Odds” and” Winning condition.”

Abstract:
This study has endeavored to discover the pertinent characteristics associated with sports gambling. Three variables appear to be especially prominent in the literature concerning gambling. Chasing one's losses is a gambling specific behavior that has been linked to pathological gambling (Lesieur, 1984). When gambler's chase their losses, they attempt to win back previously lost wagers with future gambles. In addition, previous research has focused on both the cognitive and decision making processes associated with gambling (Kahneman & Tversky, 1978; Langer, 1975). I have hypothesized that the manner in which cognitive processes, decision making, and chasing one's losses interact is a primary variable that contributes to pathological gambling. An additional hypothesis concerns the manner in which sports knowledge affects gambling behavior. The research described in this dissertation has attempted to examine the relevant cognitive and decision making processes associated with pathological gambling. Subjects engaged in gambling simulation over a six week period of time. This simulation replicated real-world gambling with the exception that money could not be lost. The top three winners were paid a percentage of their earnings in order to help insure internal validity. Results indicate that subjects with a high degree of sports knowledge gambled at a higher level and lost a greater amount of wagers than subjects with a low degree of sports knowledge. Implications associated with this include the possibility that individuals utilize knowledge as way to discount and distort statistical probabilities associated with gambling. In this study, cognition processes and decision making were not related to gambling outcomes.

Sports lottery is popular in Taiwan because it is simple, pluralistic and beneficial for the public welfare. The outcome of betting is largely determined by whether the gamblers believe that the game is truly about probability or technically influenced. The fact that the sports lottery companies have made profits for a long while has eliminated the possibility that the design is more advantageous for the house. The non-existent causality believed by gamblers has created the idea of hot hand and gambler's fallacy, causing false perception on betting, thereby saving the house. The researchers spent two months observing and recording 15 sports lottery experts' reasoning for outcome judgment (winning or loss) and their accuracy rate. Next, according to their outcome judgment reasoning, the researchers found four key factors used by punters on betting, the earned run average (ERA) of the starters, the average scores from about ten matches, the ERA of the relievers, and the length of the winning streaks, and used these four factors as the base for formulating a questionnaire on the social judgment theory. This questionnaire was used to investigate punters' decision-making knowledge for outcome judgment. The study result suggests that overall, the length of the winning streaks is the most emphasized factor by the subjects, and the subjects believe that the higher the better (a positive correlation). The second is the ERA of the starters, which also displays a positive correlation. The remaining two are less valued. As a result, subjects are affected by hot hand rather than the gambler’s fallacy. Furthermore, the age, gender and number of bet do not have a significant impact on subjects’ outcome judgment. It can be found from the record that the average accuracy rate of the 15 sports lottery expert is 48% only. In other words, for sports lottery, winning or not is only a matter of chance rather than techniques.

The suggestion and conclusion was offered after the cause-result analysis on the matter itself and human natural behavior. The conclusion of this study is as followed: As betting is one of the human nature, added that Taiwanese people are very much into “taking chances” as if the motivation of betting is in the blood of people on this island, the government should take advantage on such behavior to not only solve the problems of the underground gambling but using the collected funds to invest on social welfare and charities works. The author of this study suggests that the government should speed up the process of setting up the sports lottery. It has been proven that the sports betting, given the condition that it is clean and fair, can increase the interests on sports industry wherever the professional sports is existed. Legalizing the sports betting is believed to be the only way to provide a secure and worry-free environment for the players and fans. It is also the way to keep the gang operations out of the professional baseball. Not only the professional baseball in Taiwan will survive and revive by legalizing the sports betting, fans around the country will again truly enjoy baseball once again.

Results of the empirical part are suggesting that adolescent boys have experiences with fixed-odds betting even though they are not of age. Frequently, the reason for betting is being involved in sport and the favourite form is on-line betting.

Abstract:
My diploma thesis is both theoretical and empirical. It deals with modern nondrug addictions which are not yet classified as addictions according to the International Classification of Diseases, but their symptoms and common characteristics with recognised addictions allow us to label them as such. The theoretical part of my thesis concerns mainly a definition of these addictions, their typical symptoms, prevention and therapy. The practical part contains tables derived from the results of research carried out in the form of questionnaire surveys. One questionnaire was designed for adults, another for children and youth adults. Both aim to monitor the occurrence of modern addictions in today's population. The practical part also contains a questionnaire which confirmed or disconfirmed a suspicion of workaholism in the case of two selected persons. The appendixes to my thesis contains all the mentioned questionnaires and a case study of a person cured from a gambling addiction. The appendixes also contain graphs supplementing the practical part of the thesis, a list of rehabilitation institutions where individual addictions can be treated as well as contact information of various workplaces which provide help and counselling.
