Abstract:
AbstractDecreased gamma activity has been reported both in children and adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, while ADHD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder, our insight into the associations of spontaneous gamma band activity with age is limited, especially in adults. Therefore, we conducted an explorative study to investigate trajectories of resting gamma activity in adult ADHD patients (N = 42) versus matched healthy controls (N = 59). We investigated the relationship of resting gamma activity (30–48 Hz) with age in four right hemispheric electrode clusters where diminished gamma power in ADHD had previously been demonstrated by our group. We found significant non-linear association between resting gamma power and age in the lower frequency gamma1 range (30–39 Hz) in ADHD as compared to controls in all investigated locations. Resting gamma1 increased with age and was significantly lower in ADHD than in control subjects from early adulthood. We found no significant association between gamma activity and age in the gamma2 range (39–48 Hz). Alterations of gamma band activity might reflect altered cortical network functioning in adult ADHD relative to controls. Our results reveal that abnormal gamma power is present at all ages, highlighting the lifelong nature of ADHD. Nonetheless, longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our results.

<abstract><p>Latin square, also known as Latin square matrix, refers to a kind of $ n\times n $ matrix, in which there are exactly $ n $ different symbols and each symbol appears exactly once in each row and column. A Latin square graph $ \Gamma(L) $ is a simple graph associated with a Latin square $ L $. This paper studied the relationships between the (total) Roman domination number and (total) domination number of Latin square graph $ \Gamma(L) $. We showed that $ \gamma_{R}(\Gamma(L)) = 2\gamma(\Gamma(L)) $ or $ \gamma_{R}(\Gamma(L)) = 2\gamma(\Gamma(L))-1 $, and $ \gamma_{tR}(\Gamma(L))\ge \frac{8\gamma_t(\Gamma(L))}{5} $ for $ n\ge 2 $. In 2021, Pahlavsay et al. proved $ \gamma(\Gamma(L))\ge \lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $ and $ \gamma_t(\Gamma(L))\ge \lceil \frac{4n-2}{7}\rceil $ for $ n\ge 2 $. In this paper, we showed that $ \gamma_R(\Gamma(L))\ge 2\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $ (equality holds if, and only if, $ \gamma(\Gamma(L)) = \lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $) and $ \gamma_t(\Gamma(L)) &gt; \frac{4n}{7} $ for $ n\ge 2 $. Since $ \gamma_R(G)\le 2\gamma(G) $ and $ \gamma_{tR}(G)\le 2\gamma_t(G) $ for any graph $ G $, our results can deduce or improve Pahlavsay et al.'s results. Moreover, we characterized these Latin squares for $ \gamma_R(\Gamma(L)) = 2\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $, which is equal to $ \gamma(\Gamma(L)) = \lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $.</p></abstract>

Persistent expression of the gamma-globin genes in adults with deletion types of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) is thought to be mediated by enhancer-like effects of DNA sequences at the 3' breakpoints of the deletions. A transgenic mouse model of deletion-type HPFH was generated by using a DNA fragment containing both human gamma-globin genes and HPFH-2 breakpoint DNA sequences linked to the core sequences of the locus control region (LCR) of the human beta-globin gene cluster. Analysis of gamma-globin expression in six HPFH transgenic lines demonstrated persistence of gamma-globin mRNA and peptides in erythrocytes of adult HPFH transgenic mice. Analysis of the hemoglobin phenotype of adult HPFH transgenic animals by isoelectric focusing showed the presence of hybrid mouse alpha2-human gamma2 tetramers as well as human gamma4 homotetramers (hemoglobin Bart's). In contrast, correct developmental regulation of the gamma-globin genes with essentially absent gamma-globin gene expression in adult erythroid cells was observed in two control non-HPFH transgenic lines, consistent with autonomous silencing of normal human gamma-globin expression in adult transgenic mice. Interestingly, marked preferential overexpression of the LCR-distal (A)gamma-globin gene but not of the LCR-proximal (G)gamma-globin gene was observed at all developmental stages in erythroid cells of HPFH-2 transgenic mice. These findings were also associated with the formation of a DNase I-hypersensitive site in the HPFH-2 breakpoint DNA of transgenic murine erythroid cells, as occurs in normal human erythroid cells in vivo. These results indicate that breakpoint DNA sequences in deletion-type HPFH-2 can modify the developmentally regulated expression of the gamma-globin genes.

Abstract MRL/lpr mice develop lymphoproliferation and accelerated autoimmune glomerulonephritis from which they ultimately die. To investigate the role of IFN-gamma in the manifestation of the disease, we generated MRL/lpr mice lacking the IFN-gamma receptor (MRL/lpr gammaR -/-). The absence of IFN-gamma signaling had no effect on generalized lymphoproliferation, expansion of CD4- CD8- double-negative T cells, or hypergammaglobulinemia. By contrast, glomerulonephritis as detected by proteinuria and histology was absent in MRL/lpr gammaR -/- mice. While serum IgG1 anti-dsDNA Abs were increased in all three strains of MRL/lpr mice (gammaR +/+, +/-, -/-), those of the IgG2a and IgG3 isotypes were low in MRL/lpr gammaR -/- mice. Immune complexes and C3 deposition were dramatically reduced in the glomerular capillaries of MRL/lpr gammaR -/- mice compared with MRL/lpr gammaR +/+ and +/- mice. Therefore, IFN-gamma plays a key regulatory role in the development of nephritis in MRL/lpr mice. Low levels of IFN-gamma-dependent IgG2a and IgG3 autoantibodies in MRL/lpr gammaR -/- mice might protect them from the pathogenic features of IgG3 cryoglobulins and complement-activating IgG2a and IgG3.

Abstract:
DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) are a deleterious form of DNA damage. Densely ionising alpha radiation predominantly induces complex DSBs and sparsely ionising gamma radiation—simple DSBs. We have shown that alphas and gammas, when applied simultaneously, interact in producing a higher DNA damage response (DDR) than predicted by additivity. The mechanisms of the interaction remain obscure. The present study aimed at testing whether the sequence of exposure to alphas and gammas has an impact on the DDR, visualised by live NBS1-GFP (green fluorescent protein) focus dynamics in U2OS cells. Focus formation, decay, intensity and mobility were analysed up to 5 h post exposure. Focus frequencies directly after sequential alpha → gamma and gamma → alpha exposure were similar to gamma alone, but gamma → alpha foci quickly declined below the expected values. Focus intensities and areas following alpha alone and alpha → gamma were larger than after gamma alone and gamma → alpha. Focus movement was most strongly attenuated by alpha → gamma. Overall, sequential alpha → gamma exposure induced the strongest change in characteristics and dynamics of NBS1-GFP foci. Possible explanation is that activation of the DDR is stronger when alpha-induced DNA damage precedes gamma-induced DNA damage.

Abstract:
Gamma-ray binary stars are intriguing interacting stellar systems that exhibit emission across the whole electromagnetic spectrum. This thesis is focused on optical and gamma-ray emission of gamma-ray binary stars (GRBis). I have performed radial velocity measurements of 1FGL J1018.6-5856 to derive the orbital parameters of the system. In particular, I derive, for the first time, the orbital eccentricity which, together with other parameters, enables us to attain the orbital geometry of the system. I also use the derived parameters to put constraints on the mass of the compact object. For a large range of orbital inclination angles, a neutron star is favoured, while a black hole is allowed for very low inclination angles. I have also explored the long term variability of the Be disc in LS I +61 303. Using the measured parameters of the Hα emission line together with a semi-analytical model which describes the motions of particles in the disc, I examine long term geometric changes of the Be disc in LS I +61 303. I have explored different possible scenarios for the Be disc changes by studying the variability of the eccentricity and argument of pericenter on the superorbital timescale. One of the effects we have examined from the implication of our results is the Kozai Lidov mechanism, which has so far only been explored theoretically. I have explored the Bethe-Heitler mechanism for the production of gamma-ray emission, where energetic protons collide with stellar photons to produce energetic electron-positron pairs which upscatter photons to high energies. This mechanism has been neglected in studies of photo-hadronic processes due to the larger radiative efficiency of pion production. I demonstrate, however, that the BetheHeitler process can dominate the radiative output at lower proton energies where pairs can form but not pions. I calculate the spectrum and modulated flux in the context of the pulsar wind scenario, with photon-photon absorption and cascading effects taken into account. The effects of the ambient magnetic field around the massive star are also considered, which result in quasi-isotropic gamma-ray emission, and the orbital modulation of the flux resulting in photon-photon absorption. The work presented in this thesis encompasses different observational and theoretical aspects of gamma-ray binaries in which I use data and modeling to address some of the puzzling features of these systems. These include understanding the nature of the compact object, and thereby the physical mechanism driving the multiwavelength emission, the variability of the Be disc and its long term interaction with the compact object, and the origin of high energy emission. The results and methods presented have potential implications not only for understanding these objects, but also for other classes of interacting binaries.

Abstract:
HWZPR is a research reactor with natural uranium fuel, D2O moderator and graphite reflector with maximum power of 100 W. It is a suitable means for theoretical research and heavy water reactor experiments. Neutrons from the core participate in different nuclear reactions by interactions with fuel, moderator, graphite and the concrete around the reactor. The results of these interactions are the production of prompt gammas in the environment. Useful information is gained by the reactor gamma spectrum measurement from point of view of relative quantity and energy distribution of direct and scattered radiations. Reactor gamma ray spectrum has been gathered in different places around the reactor by HPGe detector. In analysis of these spectra, 1H(n,γ)2H, 16O(n,n′γ)16O, 2H(n,γ)3H and 238U(n,γ)239U reactions occurring in reactor moderator and fuel, are important. The measured spectrum has been primarily estimated by the MCNP code. There is agreement between the code and the experiments in some points. The scattered gamma rays from 27Al (n,γ)28Al reaction in the reactor tank, are the most among the gammas scattered in the reactor environment. Also the dose calculations by MCNP code show that 72% of gamma dose belongs to the energy range 3–11 MeV from reactor gamma spectrum and the danger of exposure from the reactor high-energy photons is serious.

Abstract:
The energy spectra, multiplicities and average energies of the prompt, total and delayed γ-rays accompanying the spontaneous fission of 252Cf were collected from the literature and dedicated databases. They were carefully analysed for consistency with a view to producing reference data for usage in various applications. This could be accomplished for the prompt fission gamma ray spectrum up to 20 MeV since dozens of measurements exist and reasonably agree. The prompt fission gamma ray spectrum (PFGS) was non-model evaluated by fitting the preselected experimental data with the help of the generalized least-squares (GLS) code GMA. The resulting spectrum could be considered as a reference for the γ-ray energies from 0.1 to 20 MeV with uncertainties varying between ≈ 3 and 25%. This reference gamma spectrum will be a substantial contribution to the precise and complete characterisation of the 252Cf source since the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS), which has been accepted as a standard for a long time, has comparable uncertainties. The average gamma multiplicity and energy were also surveyed and used to derive the recommended values. The prompt X- and γ-ray energy spectra below ≈ 100 keV and delayed photon spectra in the whole energy range, as well as their multiplicities, are still seldomly and incompletely measured, that excepts an evaluation based on experimental data. The comparison with existing theoretical prompt and delayed 252Cf(s.f.) γ-spectra or with those presented in the major evaluated cross section libraries explored their incompleteness or deviations from the evaluated PFGS. The existing measurements of the pionic and muonic radioactivity of 252Cf(s.f.) and 235U(nth,f) were reviewed and the potential impact of gammas from the π0 decay on the high energy part of the PFGS was investigated.
