The origin of cosmic-rays is one of the long-standing problems in astro physics. In recent years, strong evidence has been found that certain classes of object contain and are able to accelerate particles to high energies. In this thesis the origin problem is addressed in two different ways. This thesis shows how improvements can be made to two dimensional gamma - ray source analysis by using a probabilistic approach to describe the possible source location and likelihood of a candidate gamma-ray event. The mapping algorithm developed assesses the significance of source detection, and background subtraction is implemented both by a modified standard approach and by the development of a multivariate kernel analysis.

The experimental set-up at the Baksan Air Shower Array, used to detect air showers above ~0.2xl0(^14)eV, is described. An estimation of the angular resolution using the cosmic ray shadow of the Sun and the Moon gives a value of ~2.5˚ which is consistent with previous estimates from Monte-Carlo simulations. Using data from this array covering 1985-1992, a search is made for 7-ray emission from 18 candidate sources. Upper limits to the flux from these sources are stated in all cases. Interpretation of the present gamma-ray data above 100 MeV is discussed in relation to cosmic ray interactions with the atomic and molecular hydrogen in the Galactic plane. The SAS II gamma-ray data are analysed for supportive evidence on the 2CG candidate sources identified from the COS B observations. The strongest sources are confirmed.
