It is observed that as the energy decreases, mean lethal radiation dose (Do)decreases as well and become more potent. It is therefore proposed that radiation quality in biological systems should be assessed in the mitotic phase of the cell cycles. Furthermore, based on the mean lethal radiation dose within specific energy range, an appropriate quality factor of x-rays, gamma rays and electrons should be assigned.

Despite the fact that Cen A is one of the best studied extragalactic objects the origin of its hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray emission (100 keV <E< 50 MeV) is still uncertain. Observations with high spatial resolution in the adjacent soft X-ray and hard gamma-ray regimes suggest that several distinct components such as a Seyfert-like nucleus, relativistic jets, and even luminous X-ray binaries within Cen A may contribute to the total emission

Coherent light in the gamma-ray range would have wide-ranging applications in the probing of matter on sub-atomic scales.

AbstractThe power per logarithmic bandwidth in gamma-ray burst spectra generally increases rapidly with energy through the x-ray range and does not cut off sharply above a few MeV. This spectral form indicates that a very small fraction of the energy from a gamma-ray burst source is emitted at low energies or is reprocessed into x-rays and that the high-energy gamma rays are not destroyed by photon-photon interactions. The implications are that the emission mechanism for the gamma-ray bursts is not synchrotron radiation from electrons that lose most of their energy before being re-accelerated

This contribution gives a very short overview on the emission of supernova remnants and the processes that are responsible for both the thermal and non-thermal origins of the emission, typically observed in radio, X-rays, and up to gamma-rays. We discuss in particular the case of the Galactic SNR CTB 109. As detailed X-ray studies combined with observations in radio have shown, CTB 109 is interacting with a giant molecular cloud complex. The interaction of the SNR shock with dense interstellar clouds is responsible for both the unusual semi-circular morphology of the SNR and the bright X-ray f

Clusters of galaxies are believed to contain a significant population of cosmic rays. From the radio and probably hard X-ray bands it is known that clusters are the spatially most extended emitters of non-thermal radiation in the Universe. Due to their content of cosmic rays, galaxy clusters are also potential sources of VHE (> 100 GeV) gamma rays. Recently, the massive, nearby cluster Abell 85 has been observed with the H.E.S.S. experiment in VHE gamma rays with a very deep exposure as part of an ongoing campaign. No significant gamma-ray signal has been found at the position of the cluste

Proton therapy uses a beam of protons to destroy cancer cells. A problem of the method is the determination of what part of the body the protons are hitting during the irradiation. In a previous study we determine that by capturing the gamma rays produced during the irradiation one can determine the location of the proton-body interaction, in this work we investigate if by examining the gamma rays produced it is possible to determine the body part that produced the gamma rays by the proton collision. This study uses GEANT4 computer simulations of interactions of proton-tissue, protonbrain, pro

The pMOS dosimeters sensitivity (Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland) to gamma and X-ray irradiation and 2000 h fading at room temperature is presented. The radiation fields were created using a 60Co source for two dose ranges (1-5 Gy and 10-50 Gy) as well as for X-ray units of a 280 kV spectrum for a single dose range from 0.1 to 1 Gy. Irradiation was performed in low-field mode (no gate bias during irradiation, Virr = 0 V), sensitivity characterized by the threshold voltage shift as a function of the absorbed radiation dose and time after irradiation. Centaurus A, powered by a 55 million solar mass supermassive black hole, has been intensively monitored in all accessible wavelength ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, its very-high energy gamma ( γ ) ray flux (TeV photons), obtained from H.E.S.S. is relatively faint, hampering detailed light curve analyses in the most energetic energy band. Yet, the extensive long-term light curve data from Fermi-LAT and Swift-BAT (hard X-rays) allows for cross-correlation studies. We find a hint that X-ray emission from Centaurus A precedes the γ rays by 25 ± 125 days. If this lag is real and r
