Abstract This essay considers the representation of Gandhi in the detailed statement given to the court by his assassin, Nathuram Godse, in 1948. It discusses how Gandhi was perceived by those who wished to re-create Hinduism as a modern political ideology. Juxtaposing the views of Godse and his political mentor, V. D. Savarkar, with those of Gandhi, the essay focuses on the overdetermined invisibility or illegibility of Gandhi's conceptions of truth, religion, and political community in the discourse of the Hindu right. The proliferation of knowledge and the interconnectivity of societies have made information easily accessible, marking a significant gauge of human advancement. Nonetheless, there is a troubling underbelly to this progress. Terrorism, violence, corruption, and the widening disconnect among individuals represent grave threats to humanity. When the very existence of humanity is at risk, the pursuit of progress loses its significance. In such dire circumstances, Mahatma Gandhi's principles can provide solace and guidance

Anti-corruption movements play a vital role in democratic development. From the American Gilded Age to global demonstrations in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, these movements seek to combat malfeasance in government and improve accountability. While this collective action remains a constant, how government elites perceive and respond to such agitation, varies. My dissertation tackles this puzzle head-on: Why do some democratic governments respond more tolerantly than others to anti-corruption movements? Gandhi developed the revolutionary strategy and most of the tactics, and he was the undisputed leader of the mass movement. Though they had a close relationship, like uncle and nephew, they diverged widely on several key issues, notably Gandhi’s fasts. Nevertheless, Nehru always drew back from the brink of a schism, and he regularly acceded to Gandhi’s plans. Shortly after independence, Gandhi was assassinated and Nehru led India forward.
