Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to first analyze the reasons of a brick-wooden building tilts in Yunnan province in China. Then, a jacking method which combines the stress release methods and the excavation of stress release trench were put forward. Design/methodology/approach This method uses the anchor static pile to guarantee the safety of the building in the process of rectifying. Findings The practice showed that the inclination rate of the building was stable in the process of jacking, which proved the efficiency of the proposed method. Originality/value It has a great value for similar rectification projects, and for the protection of cultural heritage and ancient buildings have a positive effect.

Abstract:
“In my entire life I did not produce a single painting that was uppermost in mind to create,” the celebrated painter Dong Xiwen (1914–1973) reportedly lamented on his deathbed. Dong may not have produced the dream piece that he would truly cherish, but he did create, albeit unwillingly, a deeply controversial work of art in his 1953 oil painting The Founding Ceremony of the Nation (Kaiguo dadian) (Figures 1 and 2), for it epitomizes the tension between art and politics in the People's Republic of China (PRC). In this famous piece, Dong portrays Chairman Mao Zedong (1893–1976) in Tiananmen Square on 1 October 1949, with his senior associates in attendance—Liu Shaoqi (1898–1969), Zhu De (1886–1976), Zhou Enlai (1898–1976), Gao Gang (1905–1954), Lin Boqu (1886–1960), and others. They are surrounded by huge lanterns, a Chinese symbol of prosperity, and a sea of red banners that declare the founding of a new nation. When first unveiled in 1953, the painting was widely hailed as one of the greatest oil paintings ever produced by a native artist. In just three months more than half-a-million reproductions of the painting were sold. But the fate of this work soon took an ominous turn, and the artist was requested to make three major revisions during his lifetime. In 1954 Dong was instructed to excise Gao Gang from the scene when Gao was purged by the Party for allegedly plotting to seize power and create an “independent kingdom” in Manchuria. During the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s Liu Shaoqi was accused of advocating a “bourgeois reactionary line” and subsequently was purged, and Dong was ordered in 1967 to redo his painting again and erased Liu from the inauguration scene. Then, in 1972, also during the Cultural Revolution, the radicals, commonly labeled the “Gang of Four,” ordered a third revision, namely, that Lin Boqu be eliminated from the painting for allegedly opposing the marriage of Mao and Jiang Qing (1914–1991) during the Yan'an days. By this time Dong was dying of cancer and was too ill to pick up the brush, so his student Jin Shangyi (b. 1934), and another artist, Zhao Yu (1926–1980), were assigned the task. These two artists, afraid of doing further damage to the original piece, eventually produced a replica of the painting, with the ailing Dong brought from the hospital for consultation on his embattled work. Though Dong died the following year, the ill-fated story of The Founding Ceremony of the Nation did not end: in 1979, with the demise of the Gang of Four and the Party's official rehabilitation of Liu Shaoqi, the images of Liu, Gao Gang, and Lin Boqu were restored in the painting. Because Jin Shangyi was on a foreign tour, Yan Zhenduo (b. 1940), a graduate of the Department of Oil Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), was called upon to help reinstall the three leaders.

Full text
Abstract:
Concentrations of 17 trace metals bound in total suspended particulate (TSP) were measured at four urban residential locations (Jong Ro [JR], Gwang Jin [GJ], Gang Seo [GS], and Yang Jae [YJ]) in Seoul, Korea from February to July 2009. The maximum concentrations of metals were recorded by Fe in the range of 2599 (JR) to 2914 ng m-3(GJ), while the least values were observed from Ag or Co with a few ng m-3. The relative ordering of the mean concentration (ng m-3) at these sites is generally found on the order of Fe > Zn > Ba > Mn > Pb > Cu > B > Cr > Ni > Sr >V > As > Li > Cd > Mo > Co > Ag or with a few exceptions (e.g., a reversal between Ba and Mn or between Ni and Sr). Calculation of the enrichment factor suggests the significant role of man-made processes on such metals as Cd, Zn, and Pb. Inspection of the temporal patterns indicates the peak occurrence of most metals during the spring season due in part to the Asian Dust (AD) event. However, according to the factor analysis, sources of these metals were dominated by both resuspended soil/road dust and the combustion of fossil fuels. The overall results of our study suggest that the interaction between the environmental conditions and roadside traffic activities are paramount in explaining the metal pollution in these urban residential areas.

Zhang, Lu. "Lecture sémiotique du Sou shen ji de Gan Bao : modèles théoriques et interprétations du discours." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015USPC0018/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Sou shen ji is the most representative and influential work of the zhiguai genre, its historic and artistic value is unmatchable, compaired with other works of the same genre. The author, Gan Bao, is a very famous historian and scholar in Dong Jin dynasty. Among his numerous historical and literary works, it is Sou shen ji, who has had the biggest success. This work collects around four hundred and sixty-four stories independent one from each other, and the subjects are also very various, reflecting to some extent the mentality and the beliefs of the Chinese of the time. In this thesis, we have studied this work in a semiotic perspective, using the semiotic theory of Greimas. In the discursive part, we have done some analyses, from a discoursive and a cultural point of view, of the chinese conception of shen, from four categories : the gods who have a function (shen神), the immortals (xian仙), the ghosts (gui鬼), and the yaoguai妖怪, in order to draw a clearer picture of the conception of shen to the chinese. We can see that in the chinese culture, the conception of shen, located at the intersection of the religion, the politics, and the ethics, is not a concept defined in theological and transcendental termes. In the narrative part, we focus on the narrative features of the stories in Sou shen ji, and at the same time, we also try to build a narrative model which is more applicable to these stories and to the description of the intersubjective relationship

Abstract:
This chapter examines the historical evolution of Chicago’s African American underground economy. During the first decades of the twentieth-century games of chance associated with cards and dice were the primary source of gambling revenue in black Chicago. By the early 1930s, this facet of the underground economy had been surpassed by policy, also referred to as “the numbers game.” An important linkage between these two periods was that gambling proprietors funneled some of their profits back into the larger community. Later in the twentieth century, gang-controlled drug trafficking became the primary manifestation of black Chicago’s underground economy. Unlike the earlier period’s relatively violence-free focus on games of chance, the selling of illicit drugs by street gangs turned black Chicago into a battleground.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the question of who joins a county line. Where do they come from? Why do they join? The chapter considers the concept of the Pool of Availability. The Pool of Availability comprises young people who have grown up in marginalised, vulnerable communities, and through a combination of habitus, social field, and social environment are now readily available and even conditioned to step into the street gang. Where street gangs become the logical answer to the prevailing conditions, the youth who affiliate to gangs do so as ‘rational agents’ joining ‘rational organisations’. The chapter offers case study insights from respondents articulating their lived experience of involvement and life inside a county line. It explores options for entry and types of role alongside the prerequisites for joining a county line crew, managing a line, and the logistics of getting staff to customers.

Abstract:
Islam’s impact on China is growing because its external and internal influences are more intertwined than ever. Islamic civilization permeates the New Silk Road, shaping all of China’s efforts to integrate megaregions throughout Afro-Eurasia. At the same time, the development of Islam inside China changes the way Chinese people define themselves as a nation and as members of the human family. The deeper China enmeshes itself in the Islamic world, the more Chinese must ask themselves what it means to be Chinese. When Chineseness is understood more inclusively and universally, China gains greater effectiveness in relating to Muslims everywhere, regardless of nationality. For generations, Chinese scholars from many disciplines have drawn upon Sino-Islamic interchanges to reinterpret Chinese identity in more pluralist and cosmopolitan ways. Especially notable are the contributions of Gu Jie Gang in history and ethnography, Fei Xiao Tong in social science, and Tang Jun Yi in neo-Confucian philosophy.

Abstract:
The chapter reconsiders Georgia’s chain gang labor system by shifting the lens from the Jim Crow South’s convict labor production to the medicalized control over incarcerated Black women’s reproduction. In its exploration of medicalized language and the role of doctors in convict labor camps, this chapter explores how incarcerated black women experienced reproductive exploitation and control after the Civil War. At the heart of this essay is the Jim Crow South’s broader assault on black motherhood and the ways in which the Southern convict labor camp was a site meant to regulate labor production and human reproduction as shared elements of a carceral network. During slavery, black women’s wombs were commodified. After slavery, they were no longer of value. The chapter concludes that the regulation of black woman and motherhood at the site of Southern prisons had deleterious consequences for black women and the black family that stretched beyond the prison.

Abstract:
The chapter analyses the public discourse of a Swedish Salafi group, concerned with concrete social ills in the local community. The group is against violence, carrying out missionary activities focused on piety, correct practice and behaviour. Three topics are analysed using material from their YouTube-channel: 1) Reaching Paradise through Renunciation, 2) Establishing a Non-Violent Strategy, and 3) Social development. Through missionary activities (daʿwa), they respond to the current situation with foreign fighters, terrorism and gang criminality. The message is straightforward and self-assured as it attempts to disrupt the positive images some young people may have of violent lifestyles and create new role models to emulate. They are thereby striving to present a positive message: if people join their project of moral reform and renunciation, they will contribute to strengthening suburbs and create a peaceful environment. At the same time, in-group identity construction is strong and exclusionist.

Soc. 2009, 131, 5763) that trialkylaluminum reagents opened epoxides of enol ethers at the more substituted position, delivering protected diols such as 10. Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University created (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 1838) an organocatalyst for the addition of an aldehyde 11 to an imine 12, to give 13. Markus Kalesse of Leibnitz Universität Hannover showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 3485) that an organocatalyst could mediate the selective γ-reactivity of 15, leading to 16. Barry M. Trost of Stanford University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 1674) that an organocatalyst directed the addition of diazoacetate 18 to an aldehyde, to give, after further reaction with a trialkylborane, the syn aldol product 19. Professor Trost also demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 4572) that a related complex mediated the conjugate addition of 22 to 21. Enantioselective construction of arrays of alkylated stereogenic centers is a particular challenge. Ji Zhang, then at Pfizer, found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 1167) that the chiral auxiliary of 24 directed both the conjugate addition and the subsequent protonation, and also allowed the product 25 to be brought to > 98% purity by crystallization. Tönis Kanger of Tallinn University of Technology developed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 3772) an organocatalyst for the conjugate addition of aldehydes to nitrostyrenes such as 26 to give 27.

Abstract:
Continuing efforts toward the direct functionalization of aromatic C-H bonds, Nobutaka Fujii and Hiroaki Ohno of Kyoto University described (Chem. Commun. 2009, 3413) a Pd-mediated protocol for the ortho hydroxylation of aryl tetrahydropyrimidines such as 1. To use a boronic acid as an activating/directing group, Michinori Suginome, also of Kyoto University, devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 7502) the pyrazolylpyridyl derivative 3. The product 4 could be returned to the boronic acid or carried on to the borate ester, in each case with recovery of the directing group. Eiichi Nakamura of the University of Tokyo established (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 49, 2925) that ortho arylation of 5 could be accomplished even in the presence of a reactive aryl halide. In a complementary approach, Matthew J. Gaunt of the University of Cambridge developed (Science 2009, 323, 1593) a procedure for C-H arylation of anilides such as 7 that showed good meta selectivity. Mamoru Tobisu and Naoto Chatani of Osaka University have found (Chem. Lett. 2009, 38, 710) for the conversion of aryl ethers such as 9 to the tertiary amine. Masahito Ochiai of the University of Tokushima observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 8392) the remarkable inversion of an arene sulfonamide such as 11 to the protected aniline 12. Matthias Beller of the Universität Rostock established (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 49, 918) a Pd-mediated procedure for the conversion of even a congested aryl halide 13 to the phenol 14. The first C-C bond formations with phenols used very reactive, but expensive, leaving groups such as triflates. With improving ligand design, conditions have been found that work well even with inexpensive mesylates. Now, Zhang-Jie Shi of Peking University (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 14468) and Neil K. Garg of UCLA (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 14422), working independently, developed similar procedures for the Ni-mediated arylation of esters such as 15. Both groups found that pivalates worked particularly well. For some highly-substituted benzene derivatives, construction of the aromatic ring can be an economical approach.

Abstract:
The value of universities is not simply their contribution to human capital and economic growth, welcome though these are. Universities should enable a graduate to lead a flourishing, fulfilled life. That must mean the capacity to engage with the wide range of extraordinary intellectual and cultural achievements to which we are heirs and to which we should add for the next generation. It is the most important single responsibility of our universities and it is where the most significant reform is required. English education requires 16-year-olds to take life-changing decisions to specialize in just three subjects, and indeed allows students to drop a range of subjects at the age of 14. No other major Western country does this. It is the source of many of the other problems which we worry about. Fewer girls do STEM subjects after the age of 16 than in most other countries because in England they are presented with irreversible decisions to give them up when they are much too young. We suffer particularly acutely from C. P. Snow’s two cultures because our teenagers can join one of two apparently deeply hostile gangs—the humanities or the sciences, the Montagues and the Capulets of intellectual life—when most other countries avoid promoting such divisions. When employers complain about employability they often mean that young people have been force-fed for a narrow academic curriculum without a wider range of subjects and skills. Above all, as I look back on my education, my greatest regret—and that of many friends and contemporaries as we get older—is that we missed out on great scientific or cultural achievements of our age because of early decisions whose long-term significance we completely failed to recognize. I greatly enjoyed studying History, English, and German for my A levels but now I am shocked at the barbarism of a system which restricted my studies to those three subjects at the age of 16. This is the intellectual and cultural damage inflicted by our educational system when above all it should broaden our horizons and enlighten us. That this system is preserved on the claim it is necessary for high academic standards is even more scandalous.

Abstract:
Investigation of high-altitude ignition performance of several Chinese jet fuels with different properties has been conducted at a simulated altitude facility. Jet fuels were tested in a small pilot combustion chamber taken from an existing aeroengine. The fuels consist of Da-Qing oil, Da-Gang oil, Nan-Jing oil, Gu-Dao oil (so called as high density fuel) as well as a compound oil. Test results show that the lower the fuel density (its viscosity is also lower, but vapour pressure is higher), the better the high-altitude ignition performance. The high-altitude ignition performance of high density fuel is rather bad, but can be significantly improved by mixing it with a small quantity of low density oil (about 10 percent). Using a small flow number atomizer may obviously improve the weak ignition limit of the high density fuel, but the ignition velocity-pressure limit and the rich ignition limit are shrunk. Test results also show that prevailing theory model for spark ignition is feasible.

Abstract:
In this work, we present an interesting attempt on mixture generation: absorbing different image concepts (e.g., content and style) from different domains and thus generating a new domain with learned concepts. In particular, we propose a mixture generative adversarial network (MIXGAN). MIXGAN learns concepts of content and style from two domains respectively, and thus can join them for mixture generation in a new domain, i.e., generating images with content from one domain and style from another. MIXGAN overcomes the limitation of current GAN-based models which either generate new images in the same domain as they observed in training stage, or require off-the-shelf content templates for transferring or translation. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of MIXGAN as compared to related state-of-the-art GAN-based models.

Abstract:
Delafossite CuAlO2 is a p-type transparent semiconductor oxide with space group R-3m (N°166) is a material with extended applications in different fields. Structural parameters, band structure, and density of CuAlO2 have been investigated in the light of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) using PBE pseudopotentials (norm-conserving pseudopotentials). Our calculations are performed with the ABINIT package using cut-off energy of 100 Hartree, showing convergence to cut-off energy up to 30 Hartree. The lattice parameters of CuAlO2 obtained after the relaxation process are a = b = 2.904 Å and c = 17.202 Å; and consequently, volume of V=174.014 Å3 , also the derivate of the bulk modules Bo´=4.1, and bulk modulus Bo=174 Gpa were found. We find that discrepancies between our calculated lattice parameters a, c, and c/a are overestimated about 0.798%, 0.591%, and 0.219% compared to the reference’s theoretical calculations of Qi-Jun Liu et,al respectively. The calculated energy band structure of CuAlO2 and the high-symmetry points of Brillouin Zone show that the delafossite structure has an indirect band gag (~ 1.21 eV) because the top valence and the bottom conduction are found at F point and Г point, respectively. This work aims to study structural parameters, band structure, and density of states of delafossite CuAlO2 and give one application as solar cell.
