Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to provide a geopolitical analysis of the consequences engendered by the massive Hispanic immigration wave that has hit the Los Angeles region from the 1980s onward. We will specifically focus on the impact of the increasing spatial concentration of Latinos in Compton (a poor city traditionally considered as a black enclave) on the highly mediatized deterioration of interracial relations between blacks and Latinos in two specific areas : gangs and local politics. In the first part, we will detail the socio-Demographic changes that have affected Compton over the decades. We will analyze the two ethnic successions that the city went through as well as the specific socio-Economic contexts in which they occurred. This will lead us to introduce the issues at stake and the consequences of the increasing spatial concentration of Hispanic immigrants on race relations at the local level. The second part deals with the consequences of this immigration wave on the relations between black and Latinos gangs. We will describe the shift in the local balance of power and we will assess the racial dimension of this rise in interracial tensions. Lastly, in a third part, we will analyze the paradoxical lack of political representation that characterizes Compton Latinos, in spite of an overwhelming numerical superiority. We will detail the causes of such an absence of political incorporation and evaluate its impact on interracial relations

Full textWhite croaker (Genyonemus lineatus family: Sciaenidae) are a benthic foraging fish associated with soft sediment and wastewater outfalls in Southern California. While they are used as a sentinel species due to their high organochlorine contaminant loads, little is known of their movements in relation to contaminated habitats. Acoustic telemetry was used to characterize the site fidelity, area use, and dispersal of 97 white croaker on the Palos Verdes Shelf, California. White croaker demonstrated generally low, but highly variable residency and recurrence to the Palos Verdes Shelf and exhibit nomadic movement patterns. Although the entire monitored shelf was visited by white croaker, habitats in proximity to wastewater outfalls and between 25–35 m depth were preferentially used. Approximately half of white croaker migrated into Los Angeles Harbor. These data are vital for understanding organochlorine contaminant exposure for planning future remediation and monitoring.
Garcia, Mayra. "College preparedness program for high school students in South Los Angeles, California| A grant proposal." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1584933.
Full textThe purpose of this project was to write a grant proposal to develop and fund a College Preparedness Program to educate students in South Los Angeles about college requirements, process and resources. An extensive literature review was conducted in order to examine the risk factors implementing college attendance for students in South Los Angeles and strategies utilized in the past to increase college enrollment. The Annenberg Foundation was selected as the funder for this program.
The proposed program would be offered to high school students enrolled at Youth Opportunities High School, located in the community of Watts in south Los Angeles. If funded, the program will aid students with college planning, preparedness and workshops. The overall goal of this program will be to increase high school students' knowledge about college, provide guidance and support to increase college enrollment. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

Full textThe purpose of this project was to fund a mobile wellness program for the homeless in Los Angeles County, California. This program will collaborate with service providers in the selected planning areas to promote and support the services of the program to the homeless. The host agency of this proposed project is the John Wesley Community Health Institute, located in Los Angeles County, California.
After conducting a review of the literature, the grant writer designed a program to provide primary care, behavioral health, and case management services to the homeless population. Specifically, this project will fund a mobile health clinic to offer services to four Service Planning Areas (SPAs) in Los Angeles County. The Annenberg Foundation was determined to be the most appropriate match for funding of the project.
The actual submission or funding of this grant was not required for the successful completion of the project.

Full textThe submarine-fan-dominated, proximal Los Angeles basin contains interstratified hemipelagic strata coeval with the widespread Miocene Monterey Formation that accumulated in other California margin basins. Although more detritalrich and containing greater abundance of plagioclase and muscovite than more distal, outboard basins, a four-part compositional zonation is recognized in the fine-grained facies, similar to the stratigraphic succession of the Santa Barbara coastal area. In ascending stratigraphic order, these include a basal interbedded calcareous-siliceous zone, a phosphatic zone, a calcareous-siliceous zone, and an uppermost siliceous zone. To establish these zonations, 125 samples from five wells in a north-south transect across the western basin from East and West Beverly Hills, Inglewood, and Wilmington oil fields were analyzed for bulk chemical composition by XRF and quantitative mineralogy by XRD and FTIR. The mineralogic composition of the fine-grained detrital fraction makes use of geochemical equations for sedimentary components developed elsewhere unsuitable to the Los Angeles basin.

Full textThe thesis focuses on the City of Los Angeles’ acquisition of land at Taylor Yard, a 247-acre site located along the Los Angeles River (LAR), and plans to develop new greenspace projects on this previously industrial site. The Taylor Yard case study provides an example of the opportunities and struggles that face communities as they advocate for the creation of more greenspace within dense, urban Los Angeles. Employing a qualitative mixed methods approach based on media analysis, participant observation at meetings, survey questionnaires, and semi- structured interviews, the study analyzes the historical context, contemporary political ecology, and the socioeconomics that have played a role in the reconfiguration of Taylor Yard. The study examines how community-based organizations are changing the ways people perceive and utilize urban nature, encouraging and embracing local community involvement, and working towards achieving greenspace equity as well as perceptions and utilization of urban greenspace. Results demonstrate that environmental restoration and greenspace projects provide a means to educate and empower the community, and an opportunity for them to reshape their environment in ways that can enhance their livelihoods.

Chavez, Jacqueline A. "Principal stress analysis of rock fracture data from the Long Beach oil field, Los Angeles basin, California." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1587889.
Full textTwelve electric borehole-image logs from oil wells located in the Long Beach oil field were used to conduct a fracture analysis of principal stress orientations associated with the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone. The fractures analyzed are located in the Puente, Repetto, Pico, and San Pedro formations. Fractures were grouped based on fracture type, orientation, and formation. In-situ SHmax orientation was interpreted to range between 320? to 40?. Variations form the in-situ stress were observed across every formation and interpreted as paleo-stress. The SHmax orientation begins to change from NW to N-NW in the Pico Formation, which may signal the onset of the dextral movement of the Newport-Inglewood Fault 2.5 million years ago or later. The NE SHmax orientation in the San Pedro Formation may reflect stress trajectory changes as the Newport-Inglewood Fault continues to propagate in the Pleistocene. Additional SHmax orientations indicate a more complex structural evolution of stress trajectories.

Full textThis master’s thesis investigates the economic factors that are affecting the financial decision-making of educated, middle to upper class Millennials in Los Angeles, California. This thesis explores how economic factors, preferences, and self-efficacy interact to determine housing pathways. This thesis also asks whether Millennials in Los Angeles will be able to afford homes and how the cultural narrative of the American Dream affects preferences. In order to answer these questions, twenty in person interviews are conducted with residents of Los Angeles in which they are asked about their values and preferences regarding housing, and the economic factors they are currently facing. This thesis finds that participants are struggling to navigate through economic factors such as student loans, a changing labor market, urbanization, high cost of living, stagnating wages, and high housing prices. This thesis finds that participants are experiencing low self-efficacy when it comes to finances, which seems to be a proportional reaction to the current economic climate. This thesis also finds that most participants want to own homes, however, in reality very few will be able to afford to buy homes in Los Angeles and will have to rent indefinitely. Lastly, this thesis finds that participants are rejecting the old American dream and that their preferences and values are different from baby boomers', however the housing market has not yet evolved to meet the demand of those changing preferences.

Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85023.
Full textThe thesis, through an analysis of the shopping centre in the United States, Canada and France, wants to shed light on the progressive emergence of its form and spatial characteristics in those countries. This comparative study underlines the mechanisms of diffusion of the shopping center paradigm developed up in the United States and the consequences of its transfer in the other contexts. The morphological and longitudinal analysis of shopping centers located in the Los Angeles, Montreal and Paris metropolitan areas aims to evaluate the influence of the local context on the emergence of specificities related to this building type, to the urban tissues containing it, and to their respective evolution over time.
