Abstract[Determination of the Optimal Number of Trucks in the Garbage Transport Process] The garbage collection process in Batam city is carried out by garbage truck. Trucks must enter the housing and take out the garbage that is in front of each house. the number of garbage trucks is not enough so that the garbage overflows in front of the house. Residents took the initiative to dispose of the garbage in any place so as to create illegal polling stations. The objective of this research are to find the optimum garbage truck to avoid garbage pile in front of the residents' house and to prevent the occurrence of illegal polling stations. The approach used is queuing theory with limited population. Garbage trucks serve a number of houses in one area. The number of houses in one area is limited and fixed. The house is designated as a customer if the amount of garbage in front of the house is more than 5 bags or more than 20 kg. Some data to be observed is the arrival rate and speed of service. Some parameters to be calculated are the queue level, the time of the object in the queue, the probability of the object in the queue sistem, the probability of a number of objects in the queue, and the total cost which is a combination of queuing costs and operational costs. This research was conducted in Batam City. The results show that queuing theory with limited population can be applied to calculate the number of optimum garbage trucks. Implementation of the proposed improvements has an impact on the increase of speed of service rate from 267.2 houses per day to 480.8 houses per day. The optimum number of trucks in region after the implementation of the improvement is 2 Keywords: Queue; Finite Population; Garbage truck

Abstract:
Due to the large amount of waste generated by urban construction, the transportation of construction waste has a significant impact on urban traffic. Understanding the transportation trajectory of garbage trucks can improve the management of transportation routes and reduce traffic accidents. This study analyzes electric waybill and state data of garbage trucks to identify hot nodes of construction waste transportation, where the volume of garbage trucks is relatively high. Management should strengthen the hot nodes to reduce traffic accidents. First, several machine learning methods are used to improve the prediction accuracy of electric waybill generation, where the garbage truck recorded on the electric waybill is regarded as a working truck. Second, the transportation trajectory of working trucks is extracted, and its spatiotemporal characteristics are further analyzed. Hot nodes are found based on density clustering. Finally, a case study is conducted based on the Shenzhen construction waste transportation system. The results show that the XGBoost model can improve the accuracy of the generation of waybill to 90.5% compared with the decision tree model, random forest, and GBDT. Moreover, the density clustering model can discover the hot nodes of construction waste transportation. Considering the minimum number of samples and the neighborhood radius, the clustering number is determined as 100. The ratio of noise points is determined as 0.79. The results can provide decision support for the management of electronic waybill and garbage truck transportation.

Abstract:
Waste management is necessary in today's world because, with the growing population, waste generated by the human is also increasing. Million Tons of waste is being produced by the people all over the world every day. If waste is not properly disposed off, it may lead to huge health issues and it may have adverse effects on our environment also. Among all, waste collection and transportation are one of the costliest stages in solid waste management. As the truck driver must go to each bin every single day and check whether the bin is full or not. If the bin is not full, it is not only waste of time but also wastes of fuel for truck and it also increases pollution due to smoke released from trucks, needs more men for checking all the bins in different routes. In this paper, we are going to propose a smart solution for this problem using the Internet of Things. We use an ultrasonic sensor to measure the size of the bin, and raspberry pi to process the information further. This sensor data will be sent to the cloud using Wi-Fi module of raspberry pi, from the cloud the data is sent to android app. When the trash inside the bin crosses the certain threshold level, that bin and its location are shown in the App using google maps, and the current location of the truck driver is detected, and shortest path is shown. By this the garbage bins can be emptied before the dustbin overflow.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an algorithm for optimizing the garbage collection route in a local community (or a separate settlement). The study was conducted for one garbage truck. To achieve the maximum efficiency of the algorithm, it has been assumed that the points of discharge of collected waste by a garbage truck could be arranged along the way between the proposed clusters of garbage collection points. The optimization of the built routes has been proven, taking into consideration the above assumptions. The study's results could be used to reduce the budget expenditures by territorial community authorities for the collection and disposal of waste. The reported solutions could significantly shorten the garbage collection time, which would improve the environmental and aesthetic situation within the study area. The use of a new algorithm makes it possible to display the results both in quantitative and qualitative forms. An improved k-means algorithm with a maximum cluster size was selected for clustering. Each cluster was built on the basis of the maximal value of garbage truck tonnage. That means that the size of the cluster would be determined by the value of the maximum amount of waste that can be removed by a garbage truck in one run. A task of the traveling salesman was applied to find the shortest path between representatives of one cluster (garbage collection points) calling at all its points and to establish the optimal path between all the clusters formed for a territorial community. The issue related to efficient waste disposal in local communities tends to aggravate rapidly while the task to optimize garbage collection and removal is becoming increasingly acute. This is because at present, along with the increase in the global population, all types of production are increasing their volumes, which, in turn, leads to an increase in the amount of waste, in particular, household.

Abstract:
Vehicles that collect and transport household waste are equipped with complex systems that perform the loading of the waste from the stationary collection containers, take over and pre-compact of material, compaction in the body of the structure and finally the landfill of the collected waste. Of all these operations, the compaction process is by far the most mechanically demanding. In this paper, the structural analysis of the compactor plate from a garbage truck is presented. In the first stage it was carried out parametric modelling of the assembly composed of compactor plate, counter pressure plate, the back of the garbage truck and to be compacted material. After assembly, the dynamic simulation of the compaction process in the garbage truck was performed, and the compaction mechanical stresses for the compactor plate were loaded in the Simulation module of the SolidWorks 2016 program. Here the finite element analysis was performed, resulting in the value and dispersion of the equivalent stresses (calculated by von Mises criterion), displacements and relative deformations of compactor plate from the analysed garbage truck.

In this thesis, a low cost system for a garbage truck to acquire the GPS coordinates of its working route and to forecast its position through wireless packets is developed. Different to the existing forecasting system, which uses high-end systems and devices such as industrial computers, 3G wireless network, data servers and smart phones, the developed system uses a simple stand alone wireless network based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The system includes truck-end and use-end. In the truck-end, an NMEA GPS module is implemented to acquire GPS coordinates and an IEE802.15.4 compatible system chip CC2530 is used to deal the other functions such as the calculation of coordinates, the packet transmission, etc. To fit the poor calculation ability of 8051, which is embedded in the CC2530, a simplified function in calculating GPS coordinates is also implemented. In the user-end, since low cost is a very important consideration, only a CC2530 chip is implemented. To make the user-end learn the position, the user needs only to press the learning bottom when the objective garbage truck is coming.

Up till now, the reserves of petroleum are less than 40 years old all over the world. Recently, due to the fast energy consumption of Mainland China, the price of petroleum is getting higher and higher, resulting in high petrochemical energy price, too. The importing rate of Taiwan is up to 98% recently so special attention sould be paid to the safety problems of energy consumption and needs. This study carries on 11 kinds of physical and chemical characteristic analysis biodiesel (B20 and B40) and super gasoline, including flash point, water and sediment, kinematic viscovity, sulfur content, copper strip, carbon residue, cetane number, and cetane index. This result indicates that the characteristics of biodiesel are better than that of premium gasoline. Besides that the black smoke emission has been reduced, too. In the respect of economical assessment, the import cost of pure biodiesel (B100) is about 44/L, 19.9/L of super diesel, which comes to 24/L of B20 (20% biodiesel and 80% super diesel). It is presumed that when B20 and B40 are added into vehicles under different rotation rate and load, they can reach the removal amount of HC concentration by 0.63~7.18 tons, but the concentration of NO, CO, and CO2 has the trend of increase. When the annual production of biodiesel is up to more than 12,000 kL, it can reach the steady economic state, and the price of biodiesel I would be about 26/L, while the price of B20 would be merely 20.4/L. The price of B20 is a little higher than super diesel. If the government replenishes, the petroleum market will be more competitive than before. This study also utilizes the factor analysis of multivariate analysis to discuss air pollutants emitted by engine. The result shows that there are five main factors that influence the fuel emission, and the engenvalues bigger than 1 are 8.310, 4.239, 2.051, 1.479, and 1.128 respectively. These five factors are called the combustion efficiency factor, non-loading combustion characteristic factor, full-loading combustion characteristic factor. In Taiwan, the volume of consumption of traffic is more than three million kL per year, while it can reach the satble economic state that requires approximately only 100,000 kL per year.

Garbage collection has been an important aspect of urban sanitary and health issues. Most cities have set up some type of garbage collection plan using the combination of collection points and collection routes. However, in lacking of real time and reasonable approach the collection plan causes the route distribution crowded, working hours unbalanced and service boundary blurred. In garbage collection route planning, planner should not only consider the distance or cost, instead, work load balance and garbage load balance should also be considered. Therefore, how to redistribute exist routes using the same collection points to fulfill the desired objectives is the prime goal of this study. Garbage collection route planning belongs to Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP). In this study, we tried to balance working hours load first, at the same time considering the 3 times of standard deviation of garbage load, collection points and collection distance as constraints. This study applys the Geographic Information System technique and uses VRP’s Cluster First Route Second algorithm along with Voronoi Diagram and Floating Catchments Method to cluster all the collection points and generate service area of each route. Once the area of each route can be generated, we then use Nearest Neighbor Method to construct the final route and calculate the daily garbage load and travel distance. By this approach, we wish to minimize the total operation cost and give a systematic procedure to plan the future garbage collection routes in the study area. This study shows that in Nantun District we can layout 14 sub-districts and 8 of them are within the requirements of this study. However, 6 of them are unable satisfy the requirements due to the population distribution and current road structure. As a whole, this study proves that only 7 garbage trucks needed verses currently 10 trucks after using the new approach, the total trips of collection drops from 21 to 14 and the total travel distance reduced dramatically from 471 Km. to 160 Km. which are few significant improvements generated from this study. We hope that the results from this study can serve as an important role of planning the future garbage collection points by following the dynamically changing of urban development and population distribution. Further, by establishing a systematic and informatic operation the city government can adjust garbage collection routes in shortest period of time so that conflicts can be reduced.

Abstract:
Garbage in Taiwan is at the center of a musical assemblage that resonates beyond the waste collection soundscape. Taiwanese garbage trucks are musical: Badarzewska's Maiden's Prayer or Beethoven's För Elise announce the brigade's arrival at designated times and pick up locations. Neighbors stream into the street for a turn at depositing their presorted waste into the proper receptacles. Taiwan's semi-tropical climate combined with a densely situated human population, and the presence of well-established rat and cockroach populations, combine to make garbage management a matter of daily urgency. This chapter takes Taiwan's pop music, primarily Mandopop, from the early 1980s through the mid-2010s as evidence of ways in which everyday practices aimed at dealing sustainably with household waste have seeped into a wide range of sensibilities.

Abstract:
The chapter opens with a survey of the corporate displays and product features at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, highlighting the irony of the civil rights protest around the new Ford Mustang. It then explores major trends in consumer patterns with a focus on automobiles. The following section explores how the “Great Compression” influenced patterns of consumption, recreational pastimes, and leisure. It also looks at trends in home and household goods design, as well as growing diversity in consumption such as the new popularity of ethnic foods, led by pizza. The next section looks at the sources of the prosperity that fed the boom in consumerism. Finally, the last section deals with trash, a dark side of the consumerism where ironically some people measured the strength of the economy by the number of garbage trucks at landfills.

Abstract:
The political battles between anti-regulatory and libertarian conservatives and environmentalists have focused on two major and interrelated issues: sustainability and climate change. The opening of this chapter sets the stage by looking at the “Great Pacific vortex,” a vast whirlpool of plastic garbage the size of Texas, as a symptom of environmental distress. The battle over unrestrained growth took the form of “the Bet,” a wager between the Malthusian population doomsayer Paul Ehrlich and the libertarian economist Julian Simon. Whereas Ehrlich said growing world populations threatened life on earth, Simon argued that population growth was the solution, not the problem. Scarcity triggers a substitution effect (kerosene for whale oil) and as population increases so does human ingenuity. In the 1990s, the battle over climate change upstaged the argument over population. Enter Al Gore. As scientists battled to build a climate model that predicted the impact of greenhouse gases on temperatures, Gore heard a lecture in which his professor at Harvard, Roger Revelle, showed the class a graph of the “Keeling Curve” that demonstrated an unmistakable pattern of rising temperatures. It transformed the path of Gore’s life and the debate over climate change. The formation of the IPCC, along with the climate conferences at Rio in 1992 and Kyoto in 1997, provided an international platform on which scientists and government officials debated the nature of climate change and the need for governments to act. The Bush administration not only rejected Kyoto but also encouraged increased purchases of gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks.

Abstract:
HOST is an innovative vehicle concept suitable for the urban transport of both persons and goods. To lower the impact of mobility on the cities, cleaner vehicles are not enough: an integrated passenger and freight strategy must be adopted. Cleaner vehicles must be specifically designed for the purpose to be better than conventional ones under any aspect, including costs. To lower such costs and to start up the Low Polluting Vehicles (LPV) market the versatility of LPVs has to be enhanced. HOST aims at developing a fully versatile low-cost LPV concept. Versatility is achieved by making HOST vehicle modular and cost reduction is obtained by using the same vehicle for different purposes, simply changing different cabins on the same chassis. The main four tasks HOST is conceived for are: • Nocturne collective taxi; • Daytime car sharing services; • Daytime freight collection and distribution; • Nocturne garbage collection. The four mentioned services are not the only ones HOST may be used for, but are those for which it is specifically studied. Such choice is made for one very simple reason: all of the four tasks belong to the same family of “municipal services”. Using the same chassis to operate all the different services is feasible and can finally create the critical mass of final users, so to reach convenient prices. The four services chosen, two addressing passenger mobility and two addressing freight mobility, go all in the way of reducing city mobility impact. Car sharing and nocturne collective taxi systems, if integrated with public transport, can increase its attractiveness, pushing more people to use it. Freight pick-up and delivery and garbage collection need a low polluting alternative to be re-organised, so to become sustainable. The powertrain layout and the possibility to easily vary the platform main dimensions enable HOST to be equipped with very different bodyworks, which let the car manufacturer provides both private and public bodies, such as municipalities or urban mobility authorities. More in detail the energy system is all included in the HOST platform and it is conceived in shaped boxes, so that its modules become inter-exchangeable. A series hybrid configuration let HOST to be equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) coupled with an energy recovery system (batteries+supercapacitors), anyhow is already designed to utilise fuel cells (FC) powered by pure hydrogen just changing the energy module (and the tank), being this last the final purpose of the concept design. Thanks to these two solutions HOST is able to run as a zero emission vehicle for a limited period (ICE) or for the whole driving cycle (FC). A full drive-by-wire solution is adopted and the only mechanical connections between the cabin and the platform will be a specifically designed mechanical anchorage, these solutions will allow the easy installation/removal of any cabin. The vehicle has four wheel drive capability (4WD), thus featuring a good grip even on slippery roads. The four electric motors (one per wheel) allow an easy traction control, ensuring stability and safety. The chassis has a four wheel total steering (4WS) configuration, that enables the vehicle to rotate around its vertical axis as well as the to shift horizontally. These characteristics give HOST decisive advantages for the missions it has been conceived for. The 4WS capability gives to the vehicle easy manoeuvring in little streets in the cities centres and they are useful for the accurate positioning to be easily accessible by wheel chairs, during freight loading/unloading operations and while it runs as a garbage truck. Only a modular vehicle featuring the reusing concept can cover contemporarily all the selected services: one vehicle chassis with different sizes interchangeable energy generation modules and different bodies, depending on the service it is used for. Such concept, other than abating the environmental impact, will allow: • a reduction of costs: one chassis can fit several bodies compensating the higher cost of a low environmental impact energy and traction system; • a reduction of occupied space: the vehicle is always in use, night and day; • a reduction of waste materials, increasing their lifetime; • an increased life of vehicles, due to the possibility of changing bodies and energy generation modules; • traffic congestion reduction: using and reusing one vehicle for several services.

Beck, Aaron. RiverOceanPlastic: Land-ocean transfer of plastic debris in the North Atlantic, Cruise No. AL534/2, 05 March – 26 March 2020, Malaga (Spain) – Kiel (Germany). GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/cr_al534-2.

Full text
Abstract:
Cruise AL534/2 is part of a multi-disciplinary research initiative as part of the JPI Oceans project HOTMIC and sought to investigate the origin, transport and fate of plastic debris from estuaries to the oceanic garbage patches. The main focus of the cruise was on the horizontal transfer of plastic debris from major European rivers into shelf regions and on the processes that mediate this transport. Stations were originally chosen to target the outflows of major European rivers along the western Europe coast between Malaga (Spain) and Kiel (Germany), although some modifications were made in response to inclement weather. In total, 16 stations were sampled along the cruise track. The sampling scheme was similar for most stations, and included: 1) a CTD cast to collect water column salinity and temperature profiles, and discrete samples between surface and seafloor, 2) sediment sampling with Van Veen grab and mini-multi corer (mini-MUC), 3) suspended particle and plankton sampling using a towed Bongo net and vertical WP3 net, and 4) surface neusten sampling using a catamaran trawl. At a subset of stations with deep water, suspended particles were collected using in situ pumps deployed on a cable. During transit between stations, surface water samples were collected from the ship’s underway seawater supply, and during calm weather, floating litter was counted by visual survey teams. The samples and data collected on cruise AL534/2 will be used to determine the: (1) abundance of plastic debris in surface waters, as well as the composition of polymer types, originating in major European estuaries and transported through coastal waters, (2) abundance and composition of microplastics (MP) in the water column at different depths from the sea surface to the seafloor including the sediment, (3) abundance and composition of plastic debris in pelagic and benthic organisms (invertebrates), (4) abundance and identity of biofoulers (bacteria, protozoans and metazoans) on the surface of plastic debris from different water depths, (5) identification of chemical compounds (“additives”) in the plastic debris and in water samples.
