The embassy of Don García de Silva y Figueroa, sent in 1614 by Philip iii of Castile and ii of Portugal to negotiate an alliance with Shah Abbas against the Ottomans, was a fiasco. Not only did it fail to secure a deal, but within three years of the ambassador’s departure from Ispahan, in 1622, Persian troops, with the help of English ships, conquered the strategic island and fortress of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, marking a turning point in the decline of Portuguese power in Asia. Durante a União Ibérica (1580-1640), as relações entre o Estado Português da Índia e a Pérsia conheceram desenvolvimentos importantes. Os monarcas espanhóis tentaram cooptar os safávidas para uma aliança estratégica contra o Império otomano, despachando sucessivas embaixadas para a corte persa. A embaixada de D. Garcia de Silva y Figueroa à Pérsia, que decorreu entre 1614 e 1624, insere-se neste contexto mais vasto. Los fallos de ingeniería naval y de organización en el viaje y tornaviaje de Lisboa a Goa señalados por Vasconcelos en 1616 se comprueban con los relatos de ambas travesías realizados por don García de Silva y Figueroa en 1614, fray Redento da Cruz en 1617, y el del ataque en 1616 por una flotilla inglesa a la nao São Julião comandada por Manuel de Meneses. El informe enviado a Felipe IV por Fernando de Toledo en 1626 demuestra que dichos fallos seguían sin corregirse.
