Full textThis thesis makes a study of the "administrateurs civils" graduated from the "Ecole nationale d'administration" who are working in Parisian ministries. Dealing with the theory of elites, the sociology of the professions, the administrative science and the study of public policy-making, this work is based on statistics, long semi-directive interviews and ethnographic methods of observing. The opus is divided into five chapters. The first chapter analyses the "énarques" sociogenesis before their access to the school (origins, socialization, etc. ). The second one describes the double process which takes place at the ENA : it creates conformity and cultural homogenization by shaping the "énarques" according to the pattern, as well as corporative differentiation by classing them on the ending list. The third chapter studies the variety of the careers and, after various analyses upon those very French phenomena, "pantouflage" and politicization, concludes that the "administrateurs civils" are not a real corps. The fourth chapter makes a study of the occupations and the everyday life of the French civil servants : it underlines both the existence of local cultures - ministerial even directional - and of a global "state culture" that the "énarques" guard and promote just by doing their job because it is their common "status culture". The last chapter, studying the role of the "administrateurs civils" within the public decision-making, evaluates the very nature and the limits of their power over the French society governing processes. At last, the "adminstrateurs civils" appear ambiguously to be servants and/but ministers

The goals of this thesis are to specify its connection to the previously existing units, describe its specific character in terms of organization, operations and infrastructures, to decipher and dissect its domestic and municipal service in order to compare it with that of other French military regiments and Gendarmerie legions, to define the role of these “guardians of the city” within the Gendarmerie of this period and compare it with that of our current Republican Guard.Divided into three parts, this thesis consecutively examines :- the components of the Guard’s infantry and cavalry, its regimental organization and administration, its various inner mechanisms and composition, its recruitment, symbolism and uniforms;- its daily life, military and municipal training, barracks and discipline;- the public roadway police in Paris and the forces which ensure it, the influence of police headquarters on the Guard, its role in maintaining and reestablishing order. The working hypothesis is to show how different the Republican Guard of the Belle Epoque is compared to the current Guard, so similar to it in its shape, performances, traditions, and establishment, so far-removed in its sole purpose of presidential guard, guardian of the French Republic’s establishments

Full textThe discussion on the subject of the conditions in which the social dialogue in the National gendarmerie is exercised belongs to the theme of the relationship between the Nation and its armies, and gives rise to the question, inherent to any democratic society, of the control of its guardians by the City. Traditionally, the social dialogue is founded on the paradigm of “judicial confinement”. This concept relies on two axioms. Firstly, the refusing to adopt a policy of internal pluralism within the State, which consists of putting in place a control of the guardians by their exclusion from the City, through a derogatory judicial system when it comes to collective freedom. Secondly, the will to conserve the decision maker’s freedom by creating a specific institutional setting which depends upon a procedure of consultation. However, this paradigm is undermined nowadays due to the “guardians’ revolt”. Twice over, both in 1989 and in 2001, the resort to protest action demonstrated the trivialization of the number of options when it comes to action by servicemen of the gendarmerie. By sanctioning the appearance of a new arena in the field of social dialogue, the uprising of the guardians sanctions the accession of pluralism. It also demonstrates a reconsideration of the freedom of the decision maker, who is obligated to enter into a negotiation procedure. Thus, the social dialogue appears in the process of a restructurisation. There are two procedures of evolution in play: an attempt at reforming the “judicial confinement”, as well as the appearance of a new paradigm that relies upon a procedure of control of the guardians through inclusion: the “citizen soldier”

Full textOver the past few years, caretakers in the social housing sector have increasingly been considered as a cure to the " urban crisis " in " problem neighbourhoods ". The following analysis aims at showing how these grass-roots people, at the bottom of the prestige ladder, manage to build a satisfactory image of themselves from a number of resources of recognition and identity. Among them are to be found not only the identities set up and circulated by the Council Housing Association as an institution, but also their past, made up of representations of the caretaker of yesteryear, the various social worlds typical of their daily social scene - tenants, " office " staff, policemen, postmen -, the physical and material environment - the built-up environment, public areas, entrance halls - and finally each individual's own experiences. In other words, the institutional dimension of their identities fits into historical, material, social and personal dimensions

The evolution of the guard's mission which is the basis of his statute doesn't offer him more than a function of an executant in the contemporary jail. Full textSubstantial investments are being made in the area of video surveillance in order to increase public and infrastructure safety. In control rooms, the operator must monitor a number of visual scenes that usually exceeds the number of screens available. In this context, two surveillance different approaches to surveillance may be favoured: the "equally distributed" strategy, where equal distribution in the display time of cameras is preferred, and the "prioritized" strategy, where the display duration of some cameras is longer compared to other feeds. However, the impact of these monitoring strategies on operator performances is still unclear. This study seeks to assess the extent to which both strategies are used spontaneously by (non-expert) operators, and then to assess their impact on performance using a realistic video surveillance simulation. Placed in a security monitoring environment at an outdoor festival, participants must monitor eight video streams for the purpose of detecting and reporting incidents (for example, a missing child). However, the interface can only display six screens at a time. The strategy for managing the display of the cameras used is evaluated using a mathematical index based on the display time of the cameras. This index reveals that the "prioritized" strategy is used by the majority of subjects (60.3%). Yet, the detection rate of incidents does not differ significantly according to the strategy used. These results suggest that the equally distributed strategy is equally valuable as the prioritized strategy. In addition, the number of false alarms is marginally inferior for participants who equally distributed video feeds. These findings suggest that it is unnecessary to favour one of the two camera display strategies under study. Thus, either of these strategies could be chosen by operators according to their preferences rather than being imposed.

Full textDiscernment is considered an almost natural quality that would be common sense. In the police it is an indispensable individual skill. However, after a prolonged immersion in the professional field of « peacekeepers » and an analysis of the activity on patrol, discernment appears as the product of a collective interpretation activity and a collective interpretative experience. Using an ethnographic approach, this thesis attempts to capture the collective experience that is being developed : by continuously interpreting and reinterpreting the course of things, policemen build situations of action through interpretative consensus, stories and cultures

Full textIn Catholicism, the link between the protective angel and a collectivity or an individual recalls the relationship of patronage within the cult of the saints. Well-adapted to the clerical discourse of the Counter-Reformation, particularly to the Jesuit discourse on the "Final Judgment", the guardian angel has the advantage of orienting the piety of the faithful towards the central cults of Catholicism. On the borderline of the liturgy of the holy angels, one also finds a syncretic production which includes certain elements of the modern catholic conception of the guardian angel and the saint, but this is inspired also by theoretical speculations on the saints in the first centuries, on the kabbalic doctrines of the Renaissance, 19th century occultism, and modern zodiacal astrology. Far from a semiotic or theological reading, this anthropological exploration therefore analyses the different forms of devotion to the guardian angel, from the anonymous catholic guardian angel to the 72 angels in contemporary esotericism assigned to the whole of humanity, in considering also the idea of the death of close kin identified with the particular angel of the individual

Full textThe aims of this study were to establish the prevalence of psychotropic drug use and to measure the associations between a high level of job strain and an imbalanced extrinsic efforts-rewards ratio with the use of psychotropic drugs among Quebec’s correctional officers (CO’s). Another aim was to examine if interpersonal violence was associated with psychotropic drug use. Finally, we have tested if interpersonal violence at work was an intermediate factor in the causal pathway between psychosocial risk factors at work and psychotropic drug use. The prevalence of psychotropic drug use was 14.7 %. Job strain was not associated with psychotropic drug use among Quebec’s CO’s in our study. An imbalanced extrinsic efforts-rewards ratio was statistically associated with psychotropic drug use. When considering interpersonal violence at work, intimidation was not associated with psychotropic drug use, but psychological harassment was. Finally, interpersonal violence at work was not an intermediate variable in the association between psychosocial risk factors at work and psychotropic drug use.
Bauvet, Sébastien. "L'emploi de l'insécurité : fonctions sociales et expériences professionnelles des travailleurs de la sécurité privée en France." Paris, EHESS, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHES0085.
Full textFocusing on the joint analysis of security trends and the casualization of labor and employment, this thesis studies an increasingly visible but yet still little known professional group: private security workers. In exploring the symbolic and material construction of the group, it shows a paradox between rising power of the sector and the lack of recognition of employees. This is explained by the poor public perception of this type of position, and the consequences of outsourcing to maximize the economic and social benefit for employers and contractors to the detriment of job security and the valorization of the work of employees. There is also evidence that recruitment is essentially based on default orientation and the urgency of securing work. The prior experience of social ruptures and the conditions of "social insecurity" here feed a disposition to accept great responsibilities and to face "civil insecurity" : this is an essential aspect of the meaning of working in insecurity. Recruiting in the vulnerable categories of society (in terms of social and/or ethno-national background), the group does not tend to form workers' collectives. The struggle against uncertainty and the search for recognition occurs at the margins of the security ideology, through the mobilization of resources acquired in previous employment or education. Thus, the plasticity of the manner in which the private security workers' group handles its functions corresponds to the implicit features of the intensification of societies of control

Full textGuardian angel enjoyed increasing success in Early Modern Europe. This study tries to show how this popularity was made possible as well as what it tells us about Catholic confessionalisation and modern religious anthropology. To do so, this study links liturgical, theological, devotional and spiritual discourses and practices. In order to analyze the process which led to the recognition by the Roman Church in 1608 of a liturgical office to be celebrated ad libitum in the entire Catholic world, this thesis describes the medieval manifestations of the cult in the Iberian Peninsula and its transformation in the wake of the Catholic Reform of Liturgy. In-depth analysis of liturgical books and the Roman archives – especially the Congregazione dei Riti's – evidences the transition from a presentation of guardian angel as collective protector to his presentation as individual protector. To explain this transition, the role played by Rome in the process of defining modern Catholicism is considered and the figures involved in the decision of 1608 as well as the spiritual and theological background are described. Lastly, the place of guardian angel in the new trends of religious thought is analyzed in the light of larger issues such as individualism and the relationship between man and God

Full textThe comprehension of the sporting duels is a complex task, because it requires to control an interaction between two subjects. Under real conditions of play, it is impossible to control all the parameters. Thus no relation can be made between a movement and the response of the opponent. Virtual reality offers new prospects to make interact sportsmen in environments entirely under control. In this thesis, we propose to develop and validate a process for the analysis in sporting duels, in a precise application: the duel between a goalkeeper and a thrower in handball. First, we show that the reactions of the goalkeeper are identical, for the same throw, in a real and virtual environment. Once our tool is validated, we modify the gesture of the humanoid thrower thanks to a model of movement. This enables us to define the influence of the thrower's movements on the reaction of the goalkeeper. We quantify thus, the influence of the wrist, climbing the bust, and the modification of ball release on the goalkeeper's reaction

Full textVisual perception is a basic element allowing us to interact with our environment. During sport activities, the visual information uptake enable an athlete to extract and select visual cues necessary to anticipate the opposing action. In the field of sports, visual information uptake analysis has been widely carried out but all the methodologies used involve functional and material limits. The purpose of this work is to evaluate and introduce an innovative methodology based on virtual reality for analyzing visual information uptake. This methodology is applied to the handball goalkeeper activity in a duel situation. Firstly, the results obtained with our methodology and with a video-based technique are compared in order to demonstrate the interest of virtual reality in the field of sport. Secondly, we focused our attention on the setting-up of our methodology. Specifically, we aimed to analyze the influence of the graphical level of detail of the throwing action on the goalkeeper’s performance. At last, our methodology is used to analyze the visual information uptake of the handball goalkeeper. More precisely, the relative importance of visual cues from ball trajectory and throwing motion is estimated

Full textThe contribution of prison warders to the social reintegration of people sentenced to loss of liberty has become a reality. It comes within the framework of a partnership set up with other people working in the prison system, and particulary with social workers. To better identify their specific contribution, we should tackle the concept of social reintegration through a dynamic approach. The latter makes it possible to distinguish three stages in the process of integrating convicts (who had lost their liberty) back into social life : the criminological stage, the penitential stage and the social and emotional stage. The result from this is that not only the reintegration of convicts is a real datum, but it is also a realistic process. The specific contribution of prison warders is to be placed at the penitential level. This contribution mainly deals with the moral improvement of convicts. And this contribution is all the more neccessary as the moral improvement of convicts - that is a proper relation to rules - is a vital prerequisite for their social reintegration once they served their sentences. The reason for the eclipse of such a contribution is to be found in the prison misunderstanding unich tends to reduce the concept of social reintegration to its one and only social and emotional aspect. Besides, the dynamic approach of reintegrating people who have lost their liberty back into society shows in a crucial way the absence of criminologists - as specialists of the criminal phenomenom - in the plan of action aimed at supporting convicts. The absence of such a specialist, who is the interface between the prisoner and people taking an active part in supporting him is the cause of many dysfunctions occurin whilst preparing the prisoner's release

This study is not for all that a framework of senior executive sociology, but attempts to bring out and analyze the operative mechanisms in the professional practice of intermediary executives : first level supervisors. It attempts to give elements of understanding on "rule life" within an organization and to grasp the way in which actors contribute to the building up of rules which are effective, legitimate and shared. The results show that in this dangerous universe, subjected to the hazards of human behavior, supervision activity oscillates between the work of negotiation and that of teaching and which illustrate the involvement of penitentiary staff in action to reach the desired result : calm in detention

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to analyse the different stages giving rise to and participating in violence in jails. This from of violence is heterogeneous : the prison is a structurally conflictual world in which the method of organisation breeds violence which can be organisational, institutional, symbolic (diciplinary commission) and which recoils on the prisoners and their families, as well as on the staff members. But this violence is also interpersonnal, individual (violence aimed et oneself) and collective (mutiny). Finally, the study of the prisoners and of the guards has allowed to understand the different social representations of violence in jails : violence of the system, of prisoners against prisoners, of prisoners against guards against prisoners

Full textThe "social problem" posed by social housing neighbourhoods is presently leading social housing landlords, in common with many other institutions, to adopt new approaches to dealing with social issues. This had led to the development of estate-based approaches to the management of housing and an exxpansion of professional competencies. Here we examine the profession of the estate-based housing manager as a means of shedding light on social change at neighbourhood level and as an indicator of the way in which the intervention methods used by social housing organisations have evolved. By means of a historical review of the purpose of social housing in France and of the changes in the functions and profiles of concierges and caretakers, we set out the various paradigms which have shaped conceptions of their social role, and which today are marked by a repositioning of these purposes and of the work done by social housing staff as they face up to the problems posed by the crisis in neighbourhood level social infrastructure. We then draw on reflections from within sociology to propose an anthropological sociological approach to understanding the profession. This views the profession as a social phenomenon, and attemps to make links between the notions of a mechanism for delivering a " 'social contribution " and the process of " identity construction ". This approach makes it possible to treat the profession of the estate based social housing manager in terms of " social networking ", raising questions concerning the goals and limits of their remit, and the multiple competencies upon which they rely in order to provide for information flows to the landlord and residents, to provide overall monitoring and technical support services, and to promote residential harmony. It also makes it possible to understand the ongoing process of social labelling and boundary construction, which allows us to explore further the nature of their professional identity, as well as the status and position of the profession within the social housing organisation and within a socio-spatial context

Full textThis study analyses the resistances expressed by French prison guards, when confronted to the relatively recent assignment of female colleagues in prisons for men. Mobilizing a clinical epistemology, it focuses on a subjective and cross-disciplinary approach of the way prison guards express their opinions, analysis and feelings. The outcomes show that these resistances are linked to the military and religious origins of the prisons which were, until recently, monosexual. Besides, female presence, in this particular environment, changes relations built upon a strict sexual discrimination. It also introduces risks of competing behaviors and of transgressing the forbidden intimacy. Thus, women's presence compels the staff and the penitentiary administration to reconsider the sexual and affective frustrations suffered by prison inmates. This subsequent development must be analysed through the general history of women going into traditionally male occupations, thus challenging hegemonic masculinity and contesting the traditional division of labour. By law, only male guards can strip-search male inmates in France: this task, considered as « dirty work », intensifies male guards' feelings of injustice as it compels them to transgress the major proscription attached to the respect of the Skin-Ego, namely the first narcissistic envelope. The abolition of tight limits between males and females increases the need to resort to splittings between guards and prisoners on both a physical and psychic basis. To pursue this policy, considering the interferences between the institutional, professional and psychological dimensions, appear necessary

Full textOne of the purposes of this research is to produce a sociological analysis based on observation and interviews. Following extensive field work performed in three correctional facilities, our aim is to analyse the methods and challenges related to the placement of offenders in correctional facilities, which we also call the "prison environment", defined as a set of buildings, divided into floors, and composed of cells. We explore each of the social practices that go to make up the organisational management of prison inmates. As a result, the prison is analysed as a social organisation featuring power relations in which correctional officers and inmates each have their role to play in a workspace, for one group, and a place of confinement for the other. Based on the interaction between inmates and correctional officers, we attempt to produce an analysis of the placement of offenders in correctional facilities as set against a background in which correctional officers wish to avoid disorder and inmates desire adaptations to be made to prison conditions. Our study also takes into account various personal accounts from a range of stakeholders that make up the prison environment, grouped under the name of "external stakeholders". Who is involved in the placement of inmates? What does the process consist of? Is the inmate's opinion taken into account? The answers we provide to these questions are made within an environment subject to certain constraints particular to prison organisations, and which has a highly specific relationship to space and time. Our work suggests two main hypotheses: the first relates to the "ethnicization of social relations". We think that the management of the prison population is ethnicized, and that this recourse to "ethnicization" appears, at first sight, obvious in light of the high proportion of foreign prisoners and prisoners of North African origin. The second hypothesis relates to the existence of a form of negotiated management of the "prison environment". This negotiation appears to be the product of specific exchanges between inmates and correctional officers. What is the reality of the situation? This is the primary purpose of the thesis in question

Full textOur research is divided into three stages. 1)a review of literature covering stress and coping, organisational stress and health and burnout in the prison service as well as the meta-analysis. By incorporating the multi-factor health psychology model, the analysis is extended beyond the "person-environment" static relationship. This model stipulate the synthesis of the three principal explanatory factors of psychic and physical health. These factors are the environmental and socio-demographic antecedents, the individual and psychosocial antecedents and finally the transactions and adjustment stategies. 2) -two studies conducted within the French prison, and relating to Karesek's job control demand model (1979), to coping (Lazarus and al. , 1978) and to burnout (Freudenberger, 1974). The purpose of these studies is to test the weight as well as the consequences of the Karssek model on coping and burnout. 3) -a meta-analysis of burnout measured with the aid of the MBI (Maslach and al. , 1981). This method, applied in addition to the already conducted studies, should enable us support our knowledge of premonitory burnout mechanisms. Our studies underscore the weight of the 2 dimensions of the Karasek model on emotional exhaustion. Our studies confirm the moderating role of coping on burnout. Moreover, it appears that each one of the MBI burnout dimensions emerges in an independent manner in relation to the 2 other dimensions. The research density associated with burnout should be noted. In order to avoid needless multiplication of hypotheses, we are opting for the principle of parsimony and allowing the following reasoning : If the antecedents of burnout are the same in all populations, then applying a meta-analysis becomes possible. Our meta-analysis reflects the existence of a core of antecedents shared by the MBI's 3 dimensions. A correlation betwen depersonalisation and emotional exhaustion is the only one that appears to emerge

Full textThe thesis is based on the duality of legitimation and regulation aspects of the executant corps of the judicial decision of freedom privation. These aspects are at the same time complementary and conflict-provoking and are based on two systemes : a first functional, administrative and judicial regulation system and a second legitimation system which fluctuates between security and re-insertion. The thesis shows, in the period of thirty years, from 1958 to 1988, how a civil servants corps whose identity is over-determined by the special statute of 1958 turns into a neocorporatism way. This statute is hall the more necessary to the constitution of a professional legitimacy so as penal policies conducted during this period had also fluctuated between two poles, one drawn towards law and security, the other one towards prevention and re-insertion. At the end of its demonstration, this work leads onto the hypothesis of a crisis of legitimation models of the state, which tries to face it by conducting modernization policies which are insufficient to regulate legitimacy problems

Full textThis PhD thesis aims at analysing the place within the city of everyday security actors in Nairobi, Kenya. I call them “veilleurs” (sentinels of the city), playing on the double meaning of the word in French : referring both to their professional activity (watching over the city) and their feeling of living a passive life (watching all day long can be considered as a non-action). The study focuses on two groups in particular : private security guards at the gate of residential compounds in the planned city, and youthgroups members in slum areas. Adopting an individual and everyday-centred approach, this work fits in with the recent renewal of security studies. For the last ten years, those have been advocating a closer attention to “micro” effects produced by security assemblages, especially on subjectivities, affects, bodies, and everyday routines. The city of Nairobi displays a double feature that sheds new light on the sensitive question of the veilleurs. First, its urban fragmentation appears as particularly iconic in terms of imaginaries. Second, Nairobi can be qualified as an “anxious city” in light of the recent political violence (2007-2008) and the emerging terrorist threat. This study is based on both an ethnographic approach and a creative methodology using poetry as a way to free the speech of my interlocutors. It seeks to analyse the place of the veilleurs through three layered readings: their ambiguous political condition (being “on the line” between familiarity and otherness: neither inside nor outside the community they are supposed to watch over), the uncertain everyday life resulting from this condition, and the diverse imaginaries they produce to make sense of it. These three layers allow me to develop both a spatial and social reading of the key concepts of abandonment, lives on hold, and complex place to better understand this particular category of urban workers

Full textAbstract: This thesis deals with the practices of assigning detainees inside short-term prisons. Our findings are based on an ethnographic survey in men’s prisons. We examine the ways in which order is produced through observing prison warders’ practices – ways in which prisoners are classified, categorized, assigned and monitored. The analysis takes also into account the observed practices from the inmates’ perspective. By combining the study of the modes of identifying inmates with how the detention sectors are organized, this study wants to show that space management also shapes individual “careers” within the institution. To this end, it analyses the ways in which the prison order is produced in relation to its external environment, and in particular the prisoners’ territories of origin. Three approaches are put to the test: one focuses on the study of the arrivals’ quarters; another one revolves around the assignment practices as they are implemented and perceived; the third one eventually looks at the implementation of prison intelligence. These entry points make it possible to grasp the way in which prison practices and categories filter, i.e. select, information on the external environment of the institution but also on the trajectory of prisoners. The reconfiguration of surveillance practices in the light of contemporary reforms of penal confinement will therefore be examined from this perspective. The material used in this study is the result of a nine-month ethnographic survey in two short-term prisons in different French regions. It combines the observation of professional practices in detention and the role of professionals in assignment commissions. It is also based on semi-directive interviews conducted with detainees, supervisory and management staff

Full textThe angel was never as present as during the modernist era, that is at a time when thereligious figure, in its expression, its form, and even in its substance, its objects, waschallenged by the intense philosophical reflection and by the scientific and technicaldiscoveries stemming from the Enlightenment era. It is this acknowledgement basedon an omnipresence of angels, in nineteenth and twentieth art and literature alike, which led us to ask a simple question – what is the angel a sign of? What does itsymbolize? What meaning may be given its large presence? We have decided, to understand it, to get back to the sources of the angel in order toshed light onto the foundations of that which, quite obviously, establishes itself asone of the most important myths in the present-day imagination. We have alsodecided to show how the mutation from a biblical figure to a profane myth hadmanaged to happen and what were the mechanisms through which thismetamorphosis had taken place; we have also tried to know what was at stake in thisprocess. This study proposes to examine the representations of angels in art and literaturefrom 1850 to 1950 in order to discover how these traditional figures came to becomemodern myths. How can their contemporary representations testify of a newrelationship with the divine ? We'll try to answer this question by studying two majorsymbolics - the inspiring angel and the guardian angel - and by revealing the processin which the angel becomes a personal myth of the individual and especially of thecreator

Full textThe objective of this dissertation is to examine, under a sociological lens, the new practice of the corporate sustainability performance measurement. This emerging practice seems to be a social space where are structured various games of power, confrontation and resistance of many actors involved in the field of sustainable development. The first paper assumes that discourse analysis, socially constructed and constituted, surrounding measurements produced and disclosed (often highly popularized through the media), plays a fundamental role in the understanding of the practice of corporate sustainability performance measurement. In particular, the discourse transmitted by the sustainability ratings and rankings agencies (SRRA), both on their websites and in their public documents, tends to promote an ideology of numbers that exerts disciplinary power over companies appraised. Despite all the ambiguities and methodological uncertainties associated with the practice of socio-environmental performance measurement, SRRA strive to develop and transmit discourse, quite reductive, to legitimize their claim to expertise in the field. The second paper of this dissertation outlines the legitimation strategies deployed by SRRA and the disciplinary impacts of these strategies on companies scrutinized and stakeholders. Actually, it is the disciplinary power and the normalization power of the ideology of numbers which can induce some effects of self-discipline in the field of sustainable development in general. Such self-discipline is also observed in the academic world when corporate gate-keepers put pressure on researchers to abandon the publication of their research. As a methodological study, the third paper of the dissertation seeks to stimulate reflection on the impediments that the power of the corporate gate-keepers can pose on the independence and the freedom of the researchers and the universities to which they are attached, especially in the case of threats of lawsuits

Full textThe research had for subject the study of the decisions of the Constitutional Council in the light of the liberty of the Ancients and the liberty of the Moderns, both concepts proposed by Benjamin Constant in 1819. The French constitutional judge seems more inclined to protect the requirements of the liberty of the Ancients than the individual autonomy. The first part of the thesis attempts to demonstrate that the Constitutional Council operates a control of the principles of the political representation to the benefit of the liberty of the Ancients : the High authority is demanding as regards the democratic elaboration of the law and the conservation of the collective "goods" such as the sovereign people's unity or the indivisibility of the Republic. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the control of the respect for individual rights, which is also operated in the service of the liberty of the Ancients. The existence of a jurisdictional appeal is often enough to guarantee the constitutionality of infringements of substantial rights, leaving a wide margin of discretion to the political representation. The constitutional judge nevertheless showed himself rigorous towards the respect for the liberties of communication, without which the representatives have an electoral but not democratic legitimacy

Full textLiver Kinase B1 (LKB1) is involved in pleiotropic biological processes and known to be a key regulator of hepatic metabolism and polarity. Here, we investigated the contribution of LKB1 in hepatocyte proliferation and liver regeneration process. We demonstrated that loss of hepatic Lkb1 promotes liver mass recovery, through an increase of hepatocytes proliferation, independently on metabolic/energetic balance. LKB1 regulates G0/G1 progression, specifically by controlling Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) signaling. In addition, later during regeneration, LKB1 controls mitotic fidelity. Deletion of Lkb1 results in major alterations of mitotic spindle formation, along the polarity axis, independently of AMP- activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity, a key target of LKB1. Consequently, LKB1 deficiency leads to an alteration of ploidy profile, at late stage of regenerative process. Overall our study highlights the dual role of LKB1, during liver regeneration, as a guardian of hepatocyte proliferation and genomic integrity

Full textHow can one be a police constable ? This thesis tries to answer this question by analysing the building process of attraction to police jobs and the procedures for selecting the candidates. It deals first with the entrance fee candidates must pay. Although the nature and the amount of this fee is officially defined, the sentence pronounced by the gate-keepers of the institution is, in fact, unable to ensure the compatility of the recruits with the requirements of the position. Recruitment actions can be seen, therefore, as a critical moment for the stability of the institution. However, the rise and consolidation of the vocation for police jobs make candidates socially prepared to comply with the institution. The police is more the inquiry field than the object of this thesis, that propounds a contribution to the analysis of the reproduction of institutions involved in public policy

Full textThe essay examines the evolution of curtains and relation to costume fashion and woman's body between 1600 and 2000. The first part of the essay examines representations of curtains in Flemish 17th century paintings. The 18th and 19th centurys decorated curtains, their antique references and relationship to fashion are examined in the second part. Erotic representations of bed curtains in art and its relationship to the naked body is examined in the third part of the essay. The final part is about modernism and the lack of curtains, postmodern mixture of styles and curtains relationship to fashion and woman's body today. The image analyzes are focusing on curtains and bed curtains, how they are represented in paintings, illustrations and photography, and how they relate to, for example, dress, antique sculpture, symbolic and allegorical messages Curtains has many functions in the visual arts, both symbolically and compositionally. They reflect, for example, the mood of an image, simplicity, serenity, order, or abundance, movement and chaos. Curtains were a great source of inspiration for 19th and 20th centurys French fashion and curtain terminology has often ancient connotations. Modernist architects disapproved with ancient idioms and choosed not to use curtains. The 20th century and postmodernism is characterized by style mixes. All curtain types occur simultaneously, but in different contexts. The fashion of curtains are, as costume fashion, characterized by ambivalence and it is difficult to interpret the meaning of curtains in different contexts. Curtains reflect, like costume fashion, the present and the perception of the female body in Western culture.
