Full textIn the early years of Louis XV's reign, the royal domain expanded with the acquisition of a seigniory of about 8500 hectares, an outpost of the littoral cast in the Atlantic Ocean. The harbour of ships sailing from India or the West Indies, Belle-Ile-en-Mer was on the route of coasters connecting the french ports and arsenals of the Atlantic Ocean : it thus acquired a momentous strategic dimension. The second metropolitan island in the whole kingdom, the largest one in Brittany, it became, in the course of an odd hundred years, an outstanding position in the eyes of the central power. The tranfer to royal rule indeed occurred at an administrative level ; but it was mostly characterised by intensive militarisation of the site. It is the object of the present work to appraise the latter's social and economic consequences and the gap it brought about in the long-term history of the island. The recurrent pressure of events entailed intricate relationships beween sea and mainland ; accordingly, the social framework of Belle-Ile reveals micro-identities the outlines of which are minutely tackled in the present doctoral thesis so as to put forward a systemic model of island and littoral societies

Full textSecondary arsenal of the Royale in the 19th century, Rochefort nevertheless remains, in the continuity of the Age of Enlightenment, a naval base devoted to supplying the colonies. Inserted within the network of ports-arsenals of the State, the city of Charente remains a place of concretization of the colonial policy of France. Until the First World War, its arsenal thus prepared cargoes intended for French possessions in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of passengers destined for overseas also embarked from Rochefort and other war and commercial ports as part of its colonial service : administrators, officers, soldiers, settlers, families and servants or even religious and convicts. Conversely, the arsenal is also a port for returns and arrivals in mainland France. The magnitude of the task therefore requires constant mobilization. Port infrastructure, ships and supply networks were used to the best of their abilities, making the Rochefort arsenal one of the centers of colonial logistics at the time. From a rich but too little exploited documentary corpus, the purpose of this work is therefore to highlight this singular mission of providing support to the colonies from a river arsenal like that of Rochefort. It is also a question of seeing how its naval and colonial activities reflect on a garrison town linked to the Ministry of the Navy and the Colonies. Finally, this thesis aims to show the importance of logistics in the constitution of the French colonial empire

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to analyse and discuss clinch-nails found at an excavation at terrace II in the Garrison of Birka, on the island of Björkö in Sweden. This type of clinch-nails is common in Viking age Sweden and is usually interpreted as coming from boats. The study will try to show that these types of nails could have been used in several kinds of wooden constructions. It will also show how the nails were made and what kinds of tools were used by the Viking smiths. The study has shown that this type of nails were used in several different types of wooden constructions such as boats, sleds, cart bodies, coffins, Birka's ramparts and buildings. Nothing confirms the use of rivets in Viking age buildings but the material from terrace II probably contains clinch-nails from the other categories. The largest portion of the clinch-nails comes from disused boats and from the ramparts surrounding Birka's hill fort Borg. The tools for making nails have not been found in the Birka Garrison.

Full textThat study is devoted to the officers (tribunes belonging to the equester ordo) of four units of the Roman garrison under the Principate : the vigiles (firemen during the day and city police at night), the urbaniciani (daylight city police), the equites singulares Augusti (the Emperor's horse guards) and the praetorian guard (the Emperor's personal guard). The subject is dealt with as follows : to start with the geographical recruitment, then the social recruitment, as well as the career leading those militaries to tribunates. The second part deals with what constitutes the specificity of those tribunes : their officer' role, then the hierarchical relationships they had with their superiors and their subordinates, to finish with the organization of those tribune' positions. Finally has been studied what became of those officers after their military cursus was completed : their equestrian and sometimes senatorial careers, the position those officers had in their cities once their service devoted to the Emperor had come to an end, and finally the social influence that their access to tribunates (and therefore to the ordo equester) may have had on their families and descendants

Full textAbstract
Terrace III in the Birka Garrison. An analysis of function based on artifact quantification and find preparation. This paper deals with Terrace III in the Garrison of Birka, Uppland, Sweden. The main purpose is to investigate the function of Terrace III. The analysis consists of two parts. One is to analyse the stratigraphy including layers, constructions and finds. Beads and coins are selected for a discussion of dating. The other part consists of a comparison between the find material from the Hall building, the Smithy and Terrace III. Beads are discussed separately. The results are not definite due to the fact that the terrace is not completely excavated. The finds indicate that Terrace III could have been used as storage house or a dwelling house. The pottery could be taken as evidence for a storage house (and possibly the amount of rivets and nails). The presence of personal finds show that the house might have been used as a dwelling house. A few finds indicate some kind of workshop activity. The finds from Terrace III can be dated to the end of the 10th Century.
Karcher, Adeline. "Le théâtre en garnison : l'Hôtel des Spectacles de Metz au XVIIIe siècle." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LORR0316.
Full textThe theatrical establishments have by nature direct links with the law, be it in administrative, political or institutional history. The analysis of the theatre of Metz in the 18th century allows us to study the powers at stake within the theatre in a provincial town as far as the organization of leisure for town people is concerned. The theatre represents a major art of leisure in the 18th century, all the more so in garrison towns. The organization of spectacles in Metz within the allocated building is the response to needs specific to garrison towns. The military population needs to be entertained while the expectations of society in general needs to be satisfied. The construction of the theatre of Metz is encouraged by both the intendant and the governor on behalf of the central power. What is at stake on a political level is the institution of the theatre as such together with the way it is managed. The construction of the theatre allows us to analyse how individuals invested with power compete in order to assert political precedence within the province and the royal court. The successive procedures of management of the theatre enable the military authorities to get hold of a major share in the management of municipal and local institutions. These political aspects underlie this study and allow us to shed a light on the different legal aspects that the local authorities use in a bid to assert their power

Full textThis paper deals with flat iron fragments from the Viking Age hall situated in Birkas Garrison, Adelsö parish in Uppland. The aim of the study was to identify which objects these flat fragments were originally derived from. The aim was also to discuss the function of these objects and their presence in the hall. This would hopefully increase the knowledge about the hall and the warriors who lived and worked there. In some cases the fragments form and placement in the hall has not provided enough information to classify the object from which they derived. Where it has been possible, a majority of the fragments has been interpreted as parts of chest mounts or shield buckles. The result of the analysis shows the possibility of a large chest having once stood in the southwest corner of the hall.

Full textClosely connected to the history of Lorraine, Luneville is marked by its famous riding tradition as early as the eighteenth century, in particular from its final attachment to the kingdom of France in 1766. Gradually established as a model cavalry town, Luneville appears after the 1870-1871 war as a major cavalry garrison in the outpost of the annexed Lorraine. Somewhat far the civil and military life of this town, the new border between the French Republic and the German Empire was then the subject of much attention until the end of the First World War. As part of the works on the military history of France in general and the history of the French cavalry in particular, a specific study on the 2nd Cavalry Division and its units stationed in Luneville from 1873 to 1921 offers the opportunity to identify the garrison life of this Lorraine cavalry town in a period comprised between two chronologically post-conflict reconstruction phases between France and Germany. By addressing the subject from the history of events as well as the history of representations viewpoints, this thesis also highlights the major contribution of the garrison to the technical and tactical developments of the French cavalry, and to the life in a Lorraine specific town

Full textThis doctorate concerns the relationships between the army and the towns in France and their contribution to the edification of the Nation, to the Second Restauration at the french prussian war (1815-1870). During the 19th century, army and town experience importants transformations, and both contribute to symbolyze the greatness of the Nation.
