Abstract:
Anthropometric indicators such as weight-for-height (wasting), height-for-age (stunting) and weight-for-age (underweight) are important in evaluating the health and nutrition status of children in low-income areas of Bangladesh where malnutrition is still a large public health problem. Present investigation was carried out to assess the anthropometric status of tribal (Garo) and non tribal women of different villages of four Unions of Kalmakanada upazila under Netrakona district. Data were collected through well structured questionnaire. Total one hundred seventy families, ninety from tribal (Garo) and one hundred eighty from non-tribal constituted the sample of the study. The results show that malnutrition problem in this area is common due to poverty and children have low weight, under height, wasting and malnourished. The hierarchical interrelationships of potential determinants of malnutrition, wasting and underweight turned out to be independently predicted by morbidity factors. Stunting, however, was predicted by socioeconomic, environmental and health-care factors in addition to morbidity. Strategies aimed at improving the growth of infants and young children in rural communities should address morbidity due to common childhood illness coupled with environmental and socio-economically oriented measures. Abstract:
Studies on marital violence (MV) in Bangladesh have primarily focused on the women of the mainstream Bengali people, although half of the population is men, and there are also ethnic minority communities with diverse gender constructions. The current study examined the gender differences in MV among the matrilineal ethnic minority Garo, patrilineal ethnic minority Santal, and the patrilineal mainstream Bengali communities in rural Bangladesh. Adopting a cross-sectional design, we randomly included 1,929 currently married men and women from 24 villages. We used cross-tabulations as well as multivariate logistic regressions to estimate the ethnic and gender differences in MV. Data revealed that women were widely exposed to different types of MV, while only a few men experienced such abuses. It showed that 95.6% of the women experienced emotional abuse, 63.5% physical abuse, 71.4% sexual abuse, and 50.6% poly-victimization, whereas these rates were quite low among the men (emotional = 9.7%, physical = 0.7%, sexual = 0.1%). No men reported poly-victimization. The odds ratio (OR) for emotional, physical, and sexual MV were respectively, 184.44 (95% CI = 93.65−363.24, p<0.001), 449.23 (95% CI = 181.59−1111.35, p<0.001), and 2789.71(95% CI = 381.36−20407.08, p<0.001) for women compared to men. Data further revealed that matrilineal Garo women experienced less MV (emotional = 90.7%, physical = 53.4%, sexual = 64.0%, poly = 38.8%) than the patrilineal Santal (emotional = 99.4%, physical = 67.3%, sexual = 71.3%, poly = 53.9%) and Bengali women (emotional = 96.6%, physical = 69.6%, sexual = 78.8%, poly = 58.9%). Multivariate regressions also showed that the Bengali society perpetrated more physical (OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.27−2.85, p = 0.002) and sexual (OR = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.34−3.10, p = 0.001) MV than the Garo society. It appears that MV is largely a gendered issue in the country. Though both women and men can be the victims of MV, the nature/extent of victimization noticeably differs according to the social organization. Matrilineal society appears to be less abusive than the patrilineal one. Interventions aimed to prevent domestic violence in rural Bangladesh should take these findings into account.

Abstract:
SummaryThis paper evaluates exposure to mass media family planning (FP) messages among the Garo, an indigenous community in Bangladesh. A sample of 223 currently married Garo women were selected purposively from two districts where most of the Garo population live. The analysis demonstrated that television was the most significant form of mass media to disseminate FP messages among the recipients – more so than radio and newspapers. About 80·6% of the respondents had heard of FP messages through television, while for the radio and newspapers the percentages were 55·3% and 22·7% respectively. The contraceptive prevalence rate is much higher (79·5%) in the study area than the national level (55·8%). A linear logistic regression model was employed to identify the confluence of different demographic and socioeconomic characteristics on mass media FP messages. Regarding exposure to FP messages, four independent variables out of six had significant effects on the exposure to FP messages through any one of the types of media, i.e. radio, television and newspapers. These independent variables were age, level of education, occupation and number of children.

Abstract:
Northeast India, the land of original inhabitants, follows a unique and fascinating culture and tradition as its inhabitants are closely attached to nature. Northeast India is one of those few places in the world, where matrilineal culture is still practiced. In Meghalaya, one of the northeastern states, the practice of matrilineality has been in existence for almost 2000 years among a few tribes. Khasi, Jaintia and Garo, the earliest ethnic communities of Meghalaya appear to be homogenous ones, as the youngest daughter becomes the custodian of the ancestral prospects. This practice where the womenfolk become the custodians of the cultural and natural artifacts has strong parallels in the theory of ecofeminism. By employing ecofeministic perspective to read the matrilineal culture of the tribes, the paper aims to make a parallel study on the ethnic women’s affinity towards nature. Ecofeminism celebrates the robust connect between women and nature and asserts that women serve as the advocates for nature rather than men. The paper, therefore, aims to investigate ecofeministic elements among the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes of Meghalaya and tries to express an ecofeministic view concerning family, marriage, religion, and food culture of the Meghalaya tribes.

Umanzor, de Yoshimura Marta Aida. "The role of woman in the writings of Elena Garro: "El arbol", "Los perros", "Los recuerdos del porvenir", "Testimonios sobre Mariana" and "La casa junto al rio"." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185290.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents an analysis of woman's situation and viewpoint as revealed in the plays El arbol and Los perros and the novels Los recuerdos del porvenir, Testimonios sobre Mariana, and La casa junto al rio by the Mexican Elena Garro. The basis of the analysis is a study of the cultural context, the personal relationships and human interaction, and the atmosphere in the texts under consideration. The female characters function as human beings who are easily recognizable in any Latin American society. By studying Garro's women characters we can also assess the racial and socio-economic atmosphere of the setting. In El arbol this is made clear by the confessional element contained in the drama. In Los perros, and also in La casa junto al rio, we see a fruitless search for paradise lost, for the "good house" of medieval belief. In Garro's texts the feminine characters inhabit a mythic space created by themselves as a means of avoiding the violence of the empiric reality in which they live. In Los recuerdos del porvenir this violence is the direct product of military abuse. Masculine discourse is demythified through witness borne by Vicente, Andre, and Gabrielle in Testimonios sobre Mariana as they prove that Augusto's version of the story lacks credibility and lend verisimilitude to that told by the main character. In La casa junto al rio emphasis is placed on the creative importance of both nostalgia and violence as incentives to make the main character, Consuelo, undertake the adventure of seeking her roots under the pretext of finding herself. By examining the way in which female characters are presented in Garro's works, we are better able to ascertain the viewpoint of this controversial writer and experience the political and social dimensions of Latin America as witnessed by women engaged in the important effort of changing their environment into one that is more sympathetic and understandingly human to the woman.

Abstract:
This master thesis studies the recycling prospects of textiles. The textile industry contributes negatively to the global environmentthrough the release of greenhouse gases and consumption of resources. In order to achieve a circular textile industry, textiles must be recyclable by both chemical and mechanical means. Here, the focus is on mechanical extraction of staple fibres, particularly cotton, for reentry into yarn production. Experiments show that used, but undamaged, cotton sateen and cotton twill responds differently to abrasion with stochastic surfaces. Previous studies on the conventional shredding processes have shown positive impact from lubricants on extracted fibre lengths, by reducing inter-fibre friction. In the present study on abrasion, variables such as alignment of the weave pattern, lubrication and load are shown to have little to no impact on extracted fibre length, but notable effects on overall fibre quality. These analyses are supported by manual length assessment, electron micrographs and tensile tests using load cells. Furthermore, simple tests and observations on structured diamond surfaces constructed through chemical vapor deposition are promising for mechanical fibre release directly from a woven fabric. Suggestions are made on continued research in this field.

McLemore, Bethany Shae. "A German woman in Indian garb : German orientalism and ideal womanhood in Spohr’s Jessonda." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2012-08-6234.

Full text
Abstract:
Though Louis Spohr’s Jessonda is primarily remembered for being an early attempt at a continuous opera, its portrayal of India presents an interesting perspective of orientalism in Biedermeier Germany. German orientalism in the early nineteenth century was not motivated by imperialism, and thus differed fundamentally from French and British orientalism. Jessonda presents a unique opportunity to study these varying motivations, due to the story’s frequent translation and adaptation to different national stages: France, Germany, England, and America. A comparison of these possible sources for the opera reveals the authors’ varying political and/or cultural motivations. Spohr’s and his librettist’s alterations to the story were motivated in part by Biedermeier values, but also by Spohr’s classicist aesthetics. Spohr believed that an opera’s story should appeal to the everyman but music should remain elevated, untainted by popular elements-- more in line with Mozart than Spontini. The women portrayed in Jessonda, however, are constructed to particularly cater to Biedermeier values: they are stripped of their agency, left with only passive loyalty to Brahma and to the male characters. Jessonda (the character) may visually represent the exotic but, in line with Spohr’s aesthetics, she acts and sings like a European. Spohr’s musical and dramatic constructions enhance the Indian-versus-European and male-versus-female binaries, and illustrate common German conceptions of both the Indian and female Other.

Gauthier, Marie-Pierre. "Exploitation sexuelle à des fins commerciales en Inde : expériences de femmes prostituées à la gare de Varanasi." Thèse, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/4945.

Full text
Abstract:
The sexual exploitation for commercial purposes is making more and more victims in India. Considering the scale of the phenomenon and the gravity of its multiple consequences, our research aims at knowing better and at understanding the experience lived by women engaged in sexual activities against payment. More precisely, the objectives of our research are to describe the progress having driven these women to be engaged in such practices as well as their daily reality and how they perceive their situation, to be then capable to formulate propositions of preventive interventions or addressed to the women being already engaged in sexual activities for commercial purposes. We chose to interest ourselves in the women living and prostituting themselves at the train station of Varanasi. A qualitative method was privileged in the realisation of the research. Eight interviews were conducted with women and girls who prostitute themselves at the train station and three with social workers already involved on site. The observation in situ allowed to enrich the collected data. These prostitutes often come from a dysfunctional family circle. It is in situation of flight or family abandonment that they settle down at the train station. It is a place where the women are in situation of extreme vulnerability and where the living conditions are miserable. Exposed to the dangers of the life at the station and accessible to the pimps, prostitution becomes an option to survive. The needs of intervention with these women are multiple and answering to those needs is complex. A harm reduction policy and prevention appear to be avenues to be privileged.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to analyse the story of Alatiel in its philosophical context, comparing the novella with the erotic and ethic conceptions in Middle Ages. From this point of view, it is possible to recognize two models in the story: the first is embodied by the lovers of the young woman and their savage behaviour, which seems to annihilate reason and morals, in line with the comment of Dino del Garbo to Donna me Prega. The second model is proposed by Alatiel, forced to indulge fortune’s will. Around this antithesis Boccaccio develops his narrative technique, switching focalization from Alatiel to her lovers, and again to Alatiel, to debate about one of the most important themes of the whole Decameron: human action between the context created by the fortune and moral choice.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses Philo's refashioning of the biblical women in the Exposition of the Law, which differs significantly from his interpretation of them in Allegorical Commentary. They no longer symbolize the dangerous body with its passions, best to be left behind, but rather have become exemplary wives, mothers, and daughters who play an active role in the history of Israel. This dramatic change of perspective can be explained in terms of Philo's move from Alexandria to Rome. While gender issues were not discussed in the philosophical circles of his home city, he later encountered lively philosophical discussions in Rome on the role of women in society. His new image of the biblical women in the Exposition closely corresponds to his view of the Roman empress Livia, whose clear-sightedness, strength, and loyalty he appreciates. The biblical women likewise become real historical figures whom Philo interprets sympathetically from within.

How do we resolve the paradox of ascetic withdrawal with the extravagant and highly public fame of certain ascetic holy men and women? This essay applies current celebrity cultural studies to explore the construction, dissemination, and commodification of early Christian saints, taking the signal case of Simeon the Elder (also known as the Stylite), whose three vitae demonstrate the paradoxical sources and effects of saintly celebrification in late antiquity.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how scholars from three different contexts footnoted early Christian sermons to advance practical health care in poverty relief efforts at the margins between formal academic scholarship and social action. In the first example, The Rev. Dr. Daniel Price (1578–1631) appeals to nearly 250 source texts and 127 authors in his 1616 Easter Monday “Spital Sermon” on the Gospel story of the anointing woman for a London charity hospital. The second example profiles Margaret Sherwood (1892–1961) and her 1917 translation of a John Chrysostom sermon about the Pauline “collection for the poor” for social workers in Manhattan. The third example explores the context and possible motives behind a Communist-era Romanian translation of Basil of Caesarea’s famine sermon by Fr. Teodor Bodogae (1911–1994). Such accounts continue to shape ethical practices in the use of religious sources about the needy body and to invite modern readers to new innovate cross-disciplinary connections.
