Abstract:
The synthesis of ozone by means of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is extensively used in industry. Ozone generators available on the market differ in ozone production capacities, electrode arrangements and working parameters, but operate with a uniformly distributed filamentary discharge plasma pattern. In the presented work the benefits of inhomogeneous feed gas processing are explored. Causality between power induction, production efficiency and working parameters are investigated. Different electrode arrangements, evenly distributed within a given space parameter, were designed, simulated, manufactured and tested on a representative scale. A finite element model was utilized to simulate an inhomogeneous power induction pattern along the ozone generator tube. The simulation yielded the local power density, the local gas temperature gradient and the relative DBD packing density. Results show that the degree of filamentation turns out to be decisive, indicating a new potential by means of plasma tailoring. An arrangement with a pronounced power induction at the inlet of the ozone generator revealed several advantages over homogeneous plasma processing arrangements, for which an increase in robustness and a reduction in electrical power consumption are achieved.

Abstract:
The influences on thermal and optical performances of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs with three different filament arrangements are investigated in detail. The average junction temperature, temperature of the surface of the bulb, and luminous flux of three samples all increased with increasing power. The thermal performance test results show that between the average junction, temperature and power were linear. The junction temperatures of the three samples at a power of 3.5 W were 102.48, 98.46, and 88.88 °C. The optical performance test results revealed that the luminous flux and efficiency in the two vertical filament arrangements were closely related to each other and higher than that of the horizontal filament arrangement. A numerical model of LED filament bulbs was established by the Floefd 17.2 software for analyzing the temperature distribution of the cross section and the gas flow path inside the bulb. The simulation results illustrated that the average temperatures of three samples were 105.88, 101.83, and 96.12 °C. Additionally, the gas flow inside the bulb of the two vertical filament arrangements was subject to forming a thermal cycle during operation work more than that of the horizontal filament arrangement. As a result, the flexible spiral LED filament bulb is feasible as a new light source.

Abstract:
This paper discusses how to determine the arrangement of compressors in a two-unit gas pipeline station where there is no standby unit. The compressors are driven by variable speed drivers such as gas turbines or variable frequency electric motors. Both series and parallel arrangements are analyzed in a transient simulation mode to determine which operation mode is more advantageous. Among the assumptions in this paper are the performance characteristics of the compressor. It will be outlined how these performance characteristics influence the conclusions.

Abstract:
The natural gas and power sectors are pivotal sectors of the Nigerian economy with reflective effect on its gross domestic product. The Federal Government in its gas revolution agenda is taking giant strides to reposition the sector to more adequately harness its abundant natural gas resources and ensure availability of natural gas to the domestic market with the gas supply to the power sector being regulated to build base load volumes to ensure stable electricity supply to its citizens. The synergic connection of the gas and power sectors can only validly exist upon legitimate contractual arrangements such as the gas sale and purchase agreement, the gas transport agreement and the gas sale aggregation agreement which is unique to Nigerian domestic gas industry. Out of these arrangements flow pertinent legal issues which define clearly the relations between the parties. This paper therefore throws more light on some of these salient issues which arise pursuant to the respective agreements. It is hoped that this discourse would guide and further facilitate a deeper understanding of these critical terms.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the concept of gaming risk in joint venture gas agreements. It uses examples from the Queensland coal seam gas to liquefied natural gas projects to explore the objectives and risks from the perspective of various joint venture players. It considers the relative positions of joint venture parties: operator/non-operator, differing upstream and downstream operators, project participant/gas customer and majority/minority stakeholder. It also focuses on key risks from the relative perspective of each participant and how the joint venture construct can be used to obtain an optimal outcome for all parties. Where residual risk remains, this paper discusses how it can be managed through effective governance and control frameworks. The concept of game theory is usually espoused as a theoretical example of the prisoner’s dilemma. In the dilemma, each suspect can avoid a jail term if they squeal on their accomplice and the other stays silent. If, however, both suspects remain silent they both serve a minimum sentence. Readers may also be familiar with the phrases ‘win-win’ and ‘suspending self-interest’. Game theory has many applications – from business strategy to politics to war simulations. It has even been used to analyse the Brexit outcome. The gas industry is no exception. We have seen a plethora of joint venture arrangements in the gas industry, attempting to achieve optimal decision making while addressing the differing appetites for the amount and type of risks of the joint venture parties.

Roclawski, Harald. "PIV Measurements of Channel Flow with Multiple Rib Arrangements." UKnowledge, 2001. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_theses/303.

Full text
Abstract:
A model of a gas turbine blade cooling channel equipped with turbulators and a backward facing step geometry was examined. Up to four turbulators oriented cross-stream and inclined 45° to the flow direction were mounted in the channel. The blockage ratio b/H of the turbulators and the height h/H of the backward facing step was 0:125 and 0:14 respectively. The number of turbulators as well as their size was varied. In a preliminary investigation, hot-wire and pressure measurements were taken for three different Reynolds numbers (5,000, 12,000, 18,000)in the center plane of the test section. Subsequently, particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made on the same geometries. Results of PIV measurements for a Reynolds number range of Reb=600 to 5,000 for the turbulators and Reh=1,500 to 16,200 for the backward facing step are presented, where Reynolds numbers are based on turbulator height b and step height h, respectively. Plots of the velocity field, vorticity, reverse flow probability and RMS velocity are shown. The focus is on the steady flow behavior but also the unsteadiness of the flow is discussed in one section. Also reattachment lengths were obtained and compared among the various turbulator arrangements and the backward facing step geometry. It was found that the flow becomes periodic after three or four ribs. For one turbulator, a very large separation region was observed. The magnitude of the skin friction factor was found to be the highest for two ribs. If the first rib is replaced by a smaller rib, the skin friction factor becomes the lowest for this case. Compared to the backward facing step, the flow reattaches earlier for multiple turbulators. A dependency of reattachment length on Reynolds number was not observed.

Abstract:
In the past few decades, there have been significant changes caused by globalisation and information technology as regards the nature of work in both developed and developing market economies. The adoption of non-standard work arrangements (NSWAs) has been one such change. This thesis explores the nature and growth of NSWAs in Nigeria and their precarious nature. The problems associated with NSWAs have become topical issues in Nigeria because they are fast replacing the standard traditional employment system. The main question therefore to be answered in this thesis is whether or not Nigerian labour law provides a legal framework for the protection of workers in NSWAs. The author explores the incidence of NSWAs in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria by adopting the interview method to elicit first-hand information from employers and workers as represented by their unions. This thesis also examines, from the perspective of international labour standards, the adequacy of labour laws regulating non-standard work arrangements in Nigeria for ensuring the protection of the rights of non-standard workers in the work place, particularly in the areas of equality, wrongful dismissal, and freedom of association. A comparative study of the legal status of non-standard work arrangements is undertaken not only to provide an exact picture of the actual legal solutions which have been adopted in other jurisdictions to regulate the phenomenon, but also to identify the common trends such as the divergences which characterise these legal structures. The examination of the legal solutions adopted by these different jurisdictions brought to the fore the inadequacy and, in some instances, total lack of statutory protection for workers in non-standard work arrangements in Nigeria. This study, therefore, aims at preparing the ground for possible policy decisions and legislations for regulation of non-standard work arrangements and protection of non-standard workers in Nigeria.

Abstract:
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Environ & Water Science)
South Africa relies on coal and imported crude oil for most of its energy. The possible production of shale gas in the main Karoo Basin of South Africa provides a potential opportunity to diversify the primary energy mix. However, shale gas exploration and production is associated with environmental impacts that include potential groundwater contamination. Protecting groundwater resources involves an effective governance regime in place to regulate such risks on groundwater resources. This study made use of a qualitative approach to investigate groundwater governance arrangements in relation to the proposed shale gas development. Further, the study developed and used an analytical framework to assess groundwater governance provisions and capacity at local level for shale gas development.

Long, Laurie C. "Drilling Down Natural Gas Well Permitting Policy: Examining the Effects of Institutional Arrangements on Citizen Participation and Policy Outcomes." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500172/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade the movement of natural gas drilling operations toward more suburban and urban communities has created unique policy challenges for municipalities. Municipal response is manifest in a variety of institutional arrangements, some more enabling than others regarding citizen access to public hearings. This observation lead to the main research question, “How are variations in citizen participation affecting policy outcomes?” The argument is made that institutions affecting citizen participation, in turn affect policy outcomes. If the general public is given access to public hearings, their preferences for longer setbacks will be taken into account and the approved gas wells will have greater distances from neighboring residences – effectively providing for greater safety. Given the paucity of research on the topic of natural gas drilling, the research first begins with the presentation of a theoretical framework to allow for analysis of the highly complex topic of gas well permitting, emphasizing the rule-ordered relationships between the various levels of decision making and provides a typology of collective action arenas currently used by Texas municipalities. The research uses paired case studies of most similar design and employs a mixed methods process for the collection, analysis and interpretation of the municipal level gas well permitting process. The investigation includes a complete census of 185 approved gas wells from four North Texas cities between the years 2002-2012; 20 interviews comprised of city officials and drilling operators; and archival records such as gas well site plans, ordinances, on-line government documents and other public information. The findings reveal that zoning institutions are associated with a 15% longer gas well setback than siting institutions and institutions without waivers are associated with a 20% longer gas well setback than institutions with waiver rules. The practical implications suggest that citizen participation has a positive effect on public safety within gas well permitting decisions.

Abstract:
The increasing knowledge about the properties of nanostructured materials is a source of ideas for the improvement of existing and the development of new electronic or opto-electronic devices. One approach is the implementation of nanoparticles as building blocks. Among other synthesis routes, different kinds of gas phase synthesis have been developed which open the possibility to produce nanoparticles with defined properties like chemical composition, crystal structure, shape and size distribution. In order to make use of these properties, the particles have to be transferred from the three dimensional distribution in the gas phase to a two dimensional arrangement on a carrier material, for instance a substrate surface. The first goal of the investiagtion is to describe the microscopic aspects of the deposition process of nanoparticles in the size range between 5 nm and 100 nm at ambient pressure and temperature, under the condition that the particle density (which is the number of particles per unit area)on the substrate surface is below one monolayer. For this purpose, a computer simulation program has been developed, which calculates the particle trajectory that results from the balance of forces on the particle. It takes into account the interaction of incoming individual particles with the substrate surface as well as the interactions with already deposited particles. A parameter study has been carried out in order to point out how the particle arrangement on the substrate depends on the deposition parameters. The results obtained by the computer simulations are compared with experimental results. The parameters varied were the particle diameter, the particle charge, the number of particles per unit area, the substrate properties and the electric field strength. The second goal of the investigation is the structured deposition of nanoparticles from the gas on oxidized silicon substrates by direct deposition from the gas phase of an aerosol. The particles are attracted onto charge patterns created on the plane surface by contact charging. The basic principle of which is that charges cross the interface between an insulator and a metal brought into contact. After the metal is removed, charges retain on the insulator. The charge patterns can either be transferred by a sharp metal tip which is allowed to slide over the substrate surface or by a metal stamp which is pressed on the substrate surface. In the second case even complex structures may be transferred. The resolution of the patterns obtained with these methods is in the order of below 100 nm.

Okoli, Nwakego Joy. "The slow adoption of telecommuting in South Africa." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2424.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University, 2016.
Climate change imposes indisputable burdens on economic development by significantly causing damage to the environment. In the transportation sector, carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles are seen as top environmental pollutants around the world and in South Africa. Despite increasing environmental issues, many people, including business leaders, generally think of environmental issues as disconnected from their everyday business lives and behavioural patterns. The Republic of South Africa as a member of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) encourages any practices and processes that will control, reduce or prevent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. The adoption of telecommuting for travel reduction can impact positively on environmental sustainability by reducing the amount of commuter driving and thus reducing carbon emissions. Telecommuting is an arrangement where an employee works from home or out of office using telecommunication links (internet, email and/or telephone) to reduce commuting to and from the office, enhance productivity in the organisation, and reduce office space requirements. However, despite the well documented benefits of telecommuting, the uptake of telecommuting in South Africa is slow. This study falls under the Green Information Technology research field. The aim of the study is to identify the reasons behind the slow adoption of telecommuting in South African organisations. The study followed embedded multiple-case studies. Qualitative data were collected from nine companies using semi-structured interviews with 19 participants comprising of Information Technology (IT) and Human Resource (HR) managers, telecommuters and non-telecommuters. The companies were selected to be as diverse as possible in the operating sector and both purposive and snowball strategies were used.

Purba, Prisila Putri Pinarsinta. "Moving towards BIM : Managing the gap between design and construction." Thesis, KTH, Fastigheter och byggande, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-231753.

Abstract:
Many literature suggested that BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a promising future for the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry that offers enormous benefits to its actors, such as improved design quality due to less collision between disciplines and better understanding of building overview for better communication among the project team and decision-making process. However, lack of BIM knowledge and skill, absence of BIM legal acts, huge investment, software limitations, etc, are most of the time becoming barriers for them to reap the full potential of BIM. Especially during the project processes, there is a loss of value in information assets across phases. In a project setting, CPM (construction project management) organisation is believed to be in a key position between the client and the other project team members to encourage BIM implementation, for instance by the ability to formulate BIM guidelines, influence the organisational and contractual arrangement, and mandating model-based deliverables. Yet, this power comes with a bigger responsibility to manage those challenges aforementioned. The purpose of the study is to investigate the current practise of a chosen CPM organisation, Forsen Projekt AB, and propose a suggestion of improvement to implement BIM during the design and construction phase. This study adopts qualitative method that builds on literature study and semi-structured interview in order to answer the research questions on what are the gaps faced by CPM organisation in implementing BIM and how to align BIM with the CPM practise in order to manage those gaps. The interview with eight different project roles from Forsen and its affiliated organisations in a project setting enables multiple perspectives about the challenges they perceived when working in BIM environment. The findings revealed that the major gaps founded in BIM implementation are related to organisational, legal or contractual, people and process, and IT-capacity. Suggestions on how to bridge those gaps are then formulated accordingly, such as the collaborative organisational structure, BIM general guidelines, and knowledge management strategies.

Abstract:

Bridge superstructures have to be designed to permit thermal and live load strains to occur without unintended restraints. Bridge bearings have to transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure, allowing all movements in directions defined by the designer. The two functions -transfer the loads and allow movements only in the required directions for a long service time with little maintenance - are not so easy to fulfil. Different bearings for different purposes and requirements have been developed so, that the bridge designer can choose the most suitable bearing.

By the movement of a bridge, gaps are necessary between superstructure and substructure. Expansion joints fill the gaps, allowing traffic loads tobe carried and allowing all expected displacements with low resistance. Expansion joints should provide a smooth transition, avoid noise emission as far as possible and withstand all mechanical actions and chemical attacks (de-icing) for a long time. A simple exchange of all wearing parts and of the entire expansion joint should be possible.

The present volume provides a comprehensive survey of arrangement, construction and installation of bearings and expansion joints for bridges including calculation of bearing reactions and movements, analysis and design, inspection and maintenance. A long list of references deals with the subjects but also with aspects in the vicinity of bearings and expansion joints.

This book is aimed at both students and practising engineers, working in the field of bridge design, construction, analysis, inspection, maintenance and repair.

AbstractIn this chapter, the educational gradient in access to different organizational work-family policies is examined using unique multilevel survey data from the European Sustainable Workforce Survey covering nine European countries. By combining information provided by the organization, the direct supervisor, and the employee we show that for all policies, access reported by employees is substantially lower than provision reported by the team managers, which in turn is lower than the provision reported by the HR managers. This points to complex processes in the distribution of information in organizations. Moreover, at the organizational as well as the employee level, higher skilled employees have more access to working-time arrangements. We conclude that the skill gaps in the access to organizational work-family policies identified in this chapter form an important dimension of social inequality in today’s labor market.

Abstract:
Abstract Transpiration cooling in combination with permeable ceramic-matrix composite materials is an innovative cooling method for rocket engine combustion chambers, while providing high cooling efficiency as well as enhancing engine life time as demanded for future space transportation systems. In order to develop methods and tools for designing transpiration cooled systems, fundamental experimental investigations were performed. An experimental setup consisting of a serial arrangement of four porous carbon fiber reinforced carbon (C/C) samples is exposed to a hot gas flow. Perfused with cold air, the third sample is unperfused in order to assess the wake flow development over the uncooled sample as well as the rebuilding of the coolant layer. Hereby, the focus is on the temperature boundary layer, using a combined temperature/pitot probe. Additionally, the sample surface temperature distribution was measured using IR imaging. The experiments are supported by numerical simulations which are showing a good agreement with measurement data for low blowing ratios.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on Swiss federalism. Federalism allows the division of power between one central and many regional governments and is therefore a widely used institutional arrangement in multicultural societies. But rather than just focusing on local and regional autonomy and differences, Swiss federalism also allows for collective participation and coming-together for the purpose of joint problem-solving. Federalism thus understood and practised has helped bridge the gap between different cultural communities. In difference to other countries, not so much competition and regional rivalries than rather solidarity and mutuality characterise Swiss federalism. Key expression of this solidarity is a sophisticated system of fiscal equalisation made up of both vertical (top-down) and horizontal (inter-cantonal) payments.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter is devoted to an in-depth analysis of qualitative interviews about practices of solidarity in Switzerland among the fields of (un)employment and immigration. The chapter shows how institutional arrangements (policy frameworks) shape organisational solidarity within and across these two fields. The history of immigration in Switzerland goes hand in hand with the development of labour policies. This entrenchment is reflected in the activities held by the transnational solidarity organisations (TSOs) and the type of beneficiaries they support. The current research assesses TSOs’ solidarity practices while focusing on their networks of cooperation. Findings reveal that although “immigrants” and “workers” are not mutually exclusive groups, there is an implicit boundary between (un)employment and immigration associations. This translates into an organisational gap where people in situations of multiple sources of vulnerability lack full organisational support (e.g., precarious immigrant workers).

Abstract:
AbstractAs the largest ethnic minority in Europe, Roma persons are among the groups with the lowest levels of educational attainment. In Romania, the country with the highest number of Roma persons of all the EU Members States, the situation is even worse, each higher level of education revealing an increasing gap between Roma persons and the general population.Positioned within the framework of Social Capital theory, the current chapter explores the influences of micro- and mezzo-level social networks on educational attainment of Roma persons, trying to explain some of the mechanisms that perpetuate the gap between them and the general population, in terms of educational attainment.Drawing on a qualitative bottom-up study of Roma persons’ experiences of belonging in society, we analysed the interlocking influences of bonding and bridging social capital on the interviewees’ educational attainment. The results of the study point out that both forms of social capital have an important impact on the educational attainment of persons in vulnerable groups, although in different ways, and sometimes they can be mutually reinforcing, depending on the prevailing social arrangements, in either keeping the persons engaged in education, or drawing them away from their educational paths. The results also show that in circumstances of intersecting vulnerabilities, a noticeable imbalance between agency and structure is produced, which corrodes the foundational principles of equity and affects the equality of opportunities.

Abstract:
The blade tip is one area that experiences high heat transfer due to the strong tip leakage flow. One of the common methods is to apply film cooling on tip to reduce the heat load. To get a better film cooling, different arrangements of film holes on the plane and squealer tips have been numerically studied with the Reynolds stress turbulence model and non-equilibrium wall function. The present study investigated three types of film-hole arrangements: 1) the camber arrangement: the film cooling holes are located on the mid-camber line of tips, 2) the upstream arrangement: the film holes are located upstream of the tip leakage flow and high heat transfer region, and 3) two rows arrangement: the camber and upstream arrangements are combined under the same amount of coolant. In addition, three different blowing ratios (M = 0.5, 1 and 1.5), are evaluated for film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. The predicted heat transfer coefficients are in good agreement with the experimental data, but the film cooling effectiveness is over predicted on the blade tips.

Abstract:
A kind of developed exhaust-heated cycle arrangement comprising two or three reheaters and three intercoolers as well as an extra primary air blower (atmospheric combustion) is proposed. As far as classical exhaust-heated cycle is concerned, its thermal efficiency is quite low (15–20%) and therefore, a conception of a developed system provided with additional heat exchangers and combustion chambers has been worked out. The proposed installation operates on natural gas, which is becoming more and more popular now. A numerical example of calculation of a plant of 5250 kW effective power is presented. The “free-shaft” principle has been adopted. All the compressors are driven by a set of two turbines and the other two turbines are used for driving the electric generator. (Extra power that could be obtained from natural gas expander was not taken into account). In general it may be stated that the modified exhaust-heated cycle arrangement may compete with closed cycle turbine arrangements (e.g. Escher Wyss type). Moreover it may — to some extent — be superior to semi-closed cycle arrangements, since in the system proposed all the turbines are driven by compressed air whereas in the semi-closed cycle two turbines are driven by combustion gases.

Abstract:
Rotor-dynamics of Micro Gas Turbines (MGTs) under 30 kW have been a critical issue for the successful development of reliable engines during the last decades. Especially, no consensus has been reached on a reliable MGT arrangement under 10 kW with rotational speeds above 100,000 rpm, making the understanding of the rotor-dynamics of these high speed systems an important research area. This paper presents a linear rotor-dynamic analysis and comparison of three mechanical arrangements of a 6 kW MGT intended for utilising Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) using a parabolic dish concentrator. This application differs from the usual fuel burning MGT in that it is required to operate at a wider operating speed range. The objective is to find an arrangement that allows reliable mechanical operation through better understanding of the rotor dynamics for a number of alternative shaft-bearings arrangements. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to produce Campbell diagrams and to determine the critical speeds and mode shapes. Experimental hammer tests using a new approach based on optical sensing technology were used to validate the rotor-dynamic models. The FEA simulation results for the natural frequencies of a shaft arrangement were within 5% of the measurements, while the deviation for the shaft-bearings arrangement increased up to 16%.

Abstract:
In this paper a double-layered microchannel gas-to-gas heat exchanger has been designed and experimentally investigated. The micro heat exchanger (micro HEX) core is based on 133 parallel microchannels machined into polished PEEK plate for both hot side and cold side. Each microchannel is 200 μm high, 200 μm wide and 39.8 mm long. The microchannel layers have been designed in order to be able to test the effect on the thermal performances of the micro heat exchanger of partition foils made in different materials and of various thicknesses. In addition, the device allows to test the layers under three different flow arrangements, namely, countercurrent flow, cocurrent flow and cross flow. Customized pressure and temperature sensors are integrated into the microHEX to enable in-situ measurements. Experimental tests have been performed for various mass flow rates of hot and cold currents. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the classical theory for conventionally sized heat exchangers. The influence of flow arrangements and wall axial conduction on the thermal performance of the micro heat exchanger are analyzed by considering both the theory and the experimental results.

Abstract:
The flexibility of reciprocating compressors combined with the utilization of variable speed drives like gas turbines optimizes operating and capital investment costs in natural gas services. Reliability and respect for limits specified in pollution control regulations are the most significant requirements related to modern compression stations. Equipped with monitoring systems, the trains must benefit by special design procedures and modern full-load test facilities to ensure the complete confidence of users. The above features, together with energy saving advantages, make it possible to forecast the increasing application of compressor - turbine arrangements.

Abstract:
The high cooling performance and the capability of providing thermo-acoustic damping are increasing the application of effusion cooling in lean burn aero-engine combustors. The numerical characterization through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has gained strong interest, however standard Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) techniques are not capable of providing high fidelity predictions in the presence of swirling flows interacting with the cooling system. The exploitation of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) would represent the ideal solution, but the high spatial resolution required in the near-wall region, together with the well-known issues related to an accurate specification of turbulent boundary conditions at the inlets, still represent a critical challenge for its extensive use with realistic conditions in terms of Reynolds number and geometrical complexity. Therefore different scale-resolving models such as Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) are gaining popularity due to the promising results highlighted. At this purpose, a SAS approach was employed in this work to quantify the film coverage offered by different effusion cooling schemes in the presence of a swirler, highly unsteady flow field. The main goal is determine if well-known design practices derived from investigations carried out on flat plates with uniform mainstream conditions may be confirmed also under realistic flow conditions. In particular, the geometrical parameters evaluated in the work are the inclination angle, the compound angle and the pattern of the perforation. The results clearly highlight how a reduction of the inclination angle is able to keep coolant more attached to the wall, whereas the application of a compound angle increases the turbulent diffusion in the lateral direction, ultimately increasing coolant protection.

Foster, Jessica. Survey of Legal Mechanisms Relating to Groundwater Along the Texas-Mexico Border. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.groundwateralongborder.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to present a factual picture of the multiple groundwater governance frameworks that cover the same transboundary aquifers on the Texas-Mexico border. The study can then serve as a foundation to support future research and as a reference for those sharing groundwater resources on the border to use in considering whether and how to coordinate management. Currently, Texas A&M School of Law, the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, and the Texas Water Resources Institute are collaboratively pursuing a larger interdisciplinary project, and the study presented in this report is part of that concerted endeavor. First, the project establishes a study area, then identifies who are the stakeholders in the area, and finally summarizes the various rules each entity applies to groundwater. The study area selected is based on the aquifers identified in the 2016 study noted above (see Figure 1). Although there is currently no formal agreement between governments or users in Mexico and Texas for managing the reservoirs that cross underneath the international border, this survey represents a preliminary step in addressing the larger problems that the absence of a cooperative groundwater management framework presents. All of the institutional approaches employed in the various jurisdictions surveyed here model features from which developing management approaches could draw. Equally, noting gaps in the institutional approaches themselves and the ad hoc groundwater withdrawals occurring outside the reach of those institutions illustrates potential value in engaging local users in Texas’ and Mexico’s respective groundwater governance arrangements.
