West, Joel, and Jonathan Sims. How Firms Leverage Crowds and Communities for Open Innovation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816225.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many similarities in how firms pursuing an open innovation strategy can utilize crowds and communities as sources of external innovation. At the same time, the differences between these two network forms of collaboration have previously been blurred or overlooked. In this chapter, we integrate research on crowds and communities, identifying a third form—a crowd–community hybrid—that combines attributes of both. We compare examples of each of these three network forms, such as open source software communities, gated contests, crowdsourcing tournaments, user-generated content, and crowd science. We then summarize the intrinsic, extrinsic, and structural factors that enable individual and organizational participation in these collaborations. Finally, we contrast how these collaborative forms differ regarding their degree of innovativeness and relevance to firm goals. From this, we identify opportunities for future research on these topics.

Nurmikko, Turo J. Identification of the target of gabapentinoid action in neuropathic pain. Edited by Paul Farquhar-Smith, Pierre Beaulieu, and Sian Jagger. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198834359.003.0070.

Full text
Abstract:
The landmark paper discussed in this chapter is ‘Identification of the α‎2-δ‎-1 subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels as a molecular target for pain mediating the analgesic actions of pregabalin’, published by Field et al. in 2006. In this seminal paper, Field et al. demonstrated that the anti-allodynic effect of pregabalin is related to its binding to the α‎2δ‎-1 subunit of the voltage-gated calcium channel. In transgenic mice lacking this subunit, pregabalin had no effect on allodynia induced by sciatic nerve ligation, whereas, in wild-type mice, there was a substantial anti-allodynic response. This discovery was well received by the scientific community and was considered to conclusively establish the mechanism of action of pregabalin, which has remarkably similar properties to gabapentin but with increased potency and oral absorption. This exciting result acted as an impetus for further studies on the role of the subunit in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain.

Abstract:
Expanding on the work of Fredrik Barth and Pierre Bourdieu, Chapter 4 introduces a new theory of differential knowledge that helps account for diversity in pluralistic societies. It discusses the key roles of agency, habitus, and an uneven distribution of knowledge in the Centering Prayer movement, and coins the term “performative knowledge” to describe the technical and rhetorical skill with which leaders encouraged their followers. It compares the surprising differences of monastic and non-monastic versions of a Holy Week ritual, thus showing how leaders used their social and cultural capital to authenticate chosen histories in order to innovate new rites or stabilize long-established forms: some monastics worked to evoke an ethos of atonement, whereas a non-monastic community cultivated eros through the biblical theme of Love Mysticism. The role of individual leadership and charisma was especially crucial in the American environment in which religious institutions have limited authority.

Wessinger, Catherine. Collective Martyrdom and Religious Suicide. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656485.003.0004.

Abstract:
The Branch Davidians and Heaven’s Gate, two religious groups marked by apocalyptic worldviews, are compared to elucidate two types of trajectories of apocalyptic groups involved in violence. The Branch Davidians expected to be martyred based on David Koresh’s interpretations of the Bible’s prophecies about the events of the Last Days. Therefore, in 1993 they regarded assaults against their community by federal agents as verifying Koresh’s predictions. In 1997, the Heaven’s Gate “class” carried out what they regarded as an “exit” to The Level Above Human (TELAH) by implementing a collective religious suicide. In both cases, the interactions of outsiders with the group contributed to the resulting loss of life, although internal factors were more predominant in the case of Heaven’s Gate. The members of both groups lived and died in accordance with their respective worldviews and understandings of salvation.
