This thesis is concerned with so called chiral gauge theories, also known as self dual gauge theories. In particular, the aim of this thesis to investigate the role that chiral gauge theories play in duality symmetries in lower dimensions through dimensional reduction. Chapter one serves as an introduction to the notions of duality in field and string theory. The problems of formulating well defined actions for self-dual gauge theories are introduced as well as a brief presentation of the different approaches used to over come these problems. Chapter two introduces dimensional reduction and de

We investigate semiclassical contributions to correlation functions in N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theories. Our principal example is the gluino condensate, which signals the breaking of chiral symmetry, and should be exactly calculable, according to a persymmetric non-renormalisation theorem. However, the two calculational approaches previously employed, SCI and WCI methods, yield different values of the gluino condensate. We describe work undertaken to resolve this discrepancy, involving a new type of calculation in which the space is changed from R(^4) to the cylinder R(3) x S(1) This brings

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the possible sums of perturbation series in mass- less, renormalizable field theories. It shows that, given a free choice of scheme, the limit of the sequence of approximants is arbitrary. Restricting the choice to finite schemes, in particular "zero schemes", yields a perturbatively unique limit to the sequence of approximants. An operational method for calculating perturbative expansions in the class of zero schemes is discussed. A comparison of various optimization schemes is given for a few phenomenological examples in QCD and QED.

Lastly we renormalize a non-abelian gaugetheory to find that the beta function in QCD is negative.

It has been known for a long time that S-matrices in integrable models are fixed by symmetry. However, in order to obtain meaningful and precise predictions for physical observables, we must understand and compute such divergences to high orders. Due to their long wavelength, soft gluons factorise with respect to short-distance, or hard, interactions and can be captured by correlators of semi-infinite Wilson lines. Abstract:
The theories of gravity are one of the most important topics in theoretical physics and mathematical physics nowadays. The classical formulation of gravity uses the Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian, which is a singular second-order Lagrangian; hence it requires a geometric theory for second-order field theories which leads to several difficulties. Another standard formulation is the Einstein-Palatini or Metric-Affine, which uses a singular first order Lagrangian. Much work has been done with the aim of establishing the suitable geometrical structures for describing classical field theories. In

Abstract:
In this thesis we review the gauge/gravity duality and how it can be used to compute the thermodynamic properties and low-energy excitations of holographic quantum liquids - strongly-interacting field theories with a non-zero density of matter. We then study in detail the charge density excitations of two such liquids, the D3/D7 theory and the RN-AdS₄ theory, by computing the poles of their charge density Green's functions, and their charge density spectral functions. Although it is not a Landau Fermi liquid, the charge density excitations of the D3/D7 theory display many of the same propertie

Includes bibliographical references.<br>The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is a general introduction to LGT. The theory is discussed from first principles, so that for the interested reader no previous knowledge is required, although it is assumed that he/she will be familiar with the rudiments of relativistic quantum mechanics. Part II is a review of QCD on the lattice at finite temperature and density. Monte Carlo results and analytical methods are discussed. An attempt has been made to include most relevant data up to the end of 1987, and to update some earlier reviews existing on t
