AbstractThe article provides an overview of gay identity politics today. It begins with an introduction to the historical trajectory of the post-1945 period, and then turns to the challenges posed by queer politics and theory to gay identity politics. The related issue of the globalization of being gay is then considered, in terms of the universalizing of identity politics. Finally, the ramifications for gay identity politics of the political and legal recognition of same-sex relationships are discussed, leading to the obvious final question: whether being gay will continue to have a political

Studies on prejudices and stereotypes of social groups are often susceptible to social desirability. This occurs due to anti-prejudice norms that can be activated in certain contexts, such as in the presence of researchers during data collection. This study aimed to investigate whether the method of data collection influences the attribution of competence and sociability stereotypes to six minority groups (women, Black people, lesbians, gay people, people with disabilities, and Indigenous people). A sample of 258 university students aged between 18 and 59 years (M = 24; SD = 8.00), predominant

AbstractLesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people experience significant health disparities across the life course and require health care that addresses their unique needs. Collecting information on the sexual orientation and gender identity (SO/GI) of patients and entering SO/GI data in electronic health records has been recommended by the Institute of Medicine, the Joint Commission, and the Health Resources and Services Administration as fundamental to improving access to and quality of care for LGBTQ people. Most healthcare organizations, however, have yet to implement

Gay marriage is now legal in 22 countries around the world. However, homosexual acts remain punishable by death in 10 countries and are now illegal in a further 65 countries. Thus, there appears to be very clear national cultural distinctions in how local cultures consider the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. In 2016, an image of a 12-year-old boy who stood against a sea of anti-LGBT marriage protesters in Celaya, Mexico went ‘viral’ around the world as an icon for LGBT rights. This research will examine newspapers from a sample of 17 countries to see where this

Although we still lack objective data on treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBTs) in the federal service, a huge recent survey of federal employees allows us to compare LGBT and heterosexual employees’ perceptions of the treatment they receive. LGBTs have several reasons for more negative perceptions of their treatment: 70 years of federal policies that explicitly discriminated against LGBTs in large and small ways; sizable minorities who still condemn homosexuality even as public attitudes are increasingly accepting; and continuing pay gaps between comparably educated
