Abstract:
This collection of personal essays explores the use of symmetry as a metaphor of normality in contemporary American culture. These essays use formalistic exploration to enter into a conversation with the reader regarding the body, sexuality, gender, and mental illness. Each piece aims to dismantle and explode the metaphorical significations of symmetry through the use of interdisciplinary research combined with memoir.

Abstract:
Over the last few decades, there has been a significant increase in the political and public acceptance of gay men and lesbians. However, this trend of acceptance is not a global phenomenon. Currently over 70 countries still criminalise private consensual same-sex intimacy, among which are 11 of the 12 independent Commonwealth Caribbean states. It should be noted that the anti-gay laws of the Caribbean are rarely used to police consensual private sexual activities. Thus, if private same-sex conduct is rarely penalised, why keep the laws in place, especially in the age where such bans are considered a violation of basic human rights? Many policy makers in the region have cited public opinions about homosexuality as a significant barrier to law reform. However, while a common view is that these laws are anchored by public support, very few studies have emerged to test whether the attitudes and behaviours of the general population are in line with this view. Against this backdrop, this thesis analyses attitudes towards lesbians and gay men and their legal rights in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The thesis begins with an analysis of support for the anti-gay laws in Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. The analysis revealed that a majority of the sample supported the maintenance and enforcement of the laws, but did not want same-sex couples to be penalised for having sex in private. This suggests that attitudes may not be as stark as policy makers suggest. The descriptive statistics also show that a significant share of individuals think that the laws (1) reflect moral standards; (2) stop the spread of homosexuality; (3) are important from a public health perspective, and (4) protect young people from abuse. Support for the laws are thus related to beliefs that homosexuality is a 'threat' to the fabric of society. The empirical analysis of support for the laws revealed that religiousness, interpersonal contact and beliefs about the origin of homosexuality were the most reliable predictors of public support. However, age and education were only statistically significant in a few models, and there was no evidence that attitudes varied across religious denominations. This is a contrast to the findings of studies in the West. It was hypothesised that macro-level factors - such as the large share of Evangelicals, anti-gay laws and level of socioeconomic development - could be exerting an influence on attitudes that is stronger than that of these personal characteristics. As such, the study conducted a cross-national analysis of attitudes towards same-sex marriage in 28 countries in the Americas, 6 of which were members of the Commonwealth Caribbean. In general, countries with higher levels of development, smaller shares of Evangelicals and more liberal laws on homosexuality were more approving of same-sex marriage. The results also suggest that the impact of age and/or religion is less prominent in countries with restrictions on same-sex intimacy, lower levels of development and a strong Evangelical presence, confirming the hypothesis that contextual factors could mitigate the impact of some of the individual-level variables. Finally, to get a nuanced view of anti-gay prejudice in the region, a thematic analysis of anti-gay speech in dancehall and reggae - music originating from Jamaica but popular in the region - was presented. The thematic analysis revealed that homosexuality is presented as 'sinful', a 'violation of gendered norms', 'unnatural', a 'threat to society' and a 'foreign lifestyle'. The presentation of homosexuality as a 'foreign' lifestyle suggests that anti-gay prejudice could be related to fears of neo-imperialism and could be a means of rejecting ideological intrusions from the West. This is not surprising, as currently, the fight for the advancement of gay rights is being headed by activists in the West. Based on the thematic analysis, efforts to remove the anti-gay laws should be (or at least appear to be) home-grown to limit public backlash.

Abstract:
To study the impact of the liberalization of EU natural gas markets on the power of market players we develop a disaggregated model of the Eurasian natural gas supply system. We model interdependenices among the players as a cooperative game for which we consider various solutions: the Shapley value, the nucleolus and the core. In the first paper we study regional impact of liberalization of access to transmission networks, incentives for mergers and cartels. In the second paper we study the impact of liberalization on the balance of power between ''local champions'', customers, and outside producers, such as Russian Gazprom. We distinguish between two steps of the reform: 1. opening access to transit pipes and 2. opening access to distribution systems, hence customers. Using the Shapley value, we find a modest and rather heterogeneous impact from the first step. The impact of the second step is much larger and yields a clear pattern: all local champions lose, while all customers and all outside producers gain. As one third of the losses of champions within EU leaks to players abroad, current reforms might enhance the dominance of already powerful outside producers. When we apply the nucleolus, in contrast, full liberalization does not benefit outside producers at all. In the third paper we focus on the relation of the Shapley value and the nucleolus to the core. For our model the Shapley value is never in the core. To evaluate the degree of instability of a payoff allocation which is not in the core, we propose an extension of the strong epsilon-core and consider three metrics. We find that liberalization increases the degree of instability of the Shapley value for all metrics. We show that liberalization compresses the core, but not always the nucleolus corresponds well to the shifts in the minimal and maximal values of players in the core.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Philip E. Strahan
The first essay of this dissertation measures the real effect of increases in local deposit supply on local economic outcomes. To identify this effect, I use exogenous variation in local deposit supply from oil and natural gas shale discoveries. A change in deposit supply should have its largest effect on areas where credit supply frictions are the strongest. I find that the effect is strongest in areas dominated by small banks. The second essay analyzes the investment policies of public and private natural gas firms, and is joint work with Jérôme Taillard. We find that privately held firms are 60% less responsive to natural gas price changes than publicly traded firms. Additionally, we find that private firms do not respond to new shale investment opportunities, whereas public firms do. We believe these results are consistent with private firms having a higher cost of external capital. The third essay empirically tests whether firms increase risk taking activity when they are close to distress due to the risk taking incentives of equity-holders. I find that firms actually reduce risk taking when they are close to distress, and in the years prior to bankruptcy. This evidence suggests that risk reduction incentives may be more important for the average firm as it gets close to distress
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014
Submitted to: Boston College. Zandberg, Mordechai Yehonatan. "Essays on the Gender Gap in Entrepreneurship:." Thesis, Boston College, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:109072.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Philip E. Strahan
The essays on the gender gap in entrepreneurship examine the trade-offs between women's family formation choices and career aspirations in the setting of small businesses and entrepreneurship. The first essay titled ``Family Comes First: Reproductive Health and the Gender Gap in Entrepreneurship,'' uses Census data to show how better access to reproductive care increases women's propensity to become entrepreneurs, correlates positively with female entrepreneurial activity, and negatively with female entrepreneurial age. Examining firm size and personal income suggests it also improves the success of female-led businesses. Finally, it shows how policies securing better reproductive care enable more women to become entrepreneurs and, potentially, drive economic growth. The second essay titled ``Reproductive Rights and Women's Access to Capital,'' explores the impact of reproductive care restrictions on female entrepreneurs seeking to raise capital. It tests the hypothesis that better access to reproductive care enables women to plan their family formation better, avoid unexpected pregnancies, and gain access to cheaper capital as a result of this reduced risk. This hypothesis is analyzed using restricted data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) in a difference-in-differences setting around the enactment of state-level legislation limiting access to reproductive care. It finds restrictions on reproductive care to be detrimental to women seeking to raise capital and open their own firms. Women who have limited reproductive care access are less likely to borrow, end up taking smaller loan amounts, and have lower leverage ratios. The main contribution of the first essay is that it establishes a direction and causal relationship between reproductive care and entrepreneurship, and of the second essay is that it shows how the increased risk of unplanned pregnancy translates into reduced credit availability for female entrepreneurs at childbearing age
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021
Submitted to: Boston College. Jiao, Yang. "Essays on household and family economics." Diss., Kansas State University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/32686.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Economics
Yang M. Chang
This dissertation consists of three essays in the field of household and family economics. Specifically, the research focuses on the optimal taxation and household behavior, gender inequality in the labor market during economics transition, and fertility choices and female labor supply. Chapter 1 explores the welfare implications of an optimal tax-transfer schedule to dual-earner couples. A non-cooperative model is used to examine labor supply decisions of married couples to both individual- and joint-based taxation, and the results suggest that the impact of income taxation on family labor supply is largely dependent on spouses' relative wage income. I also investigate the welfare effect of a governmental imposed re-distributive program on both spouses, the simulation results of moving from individual to joint taxation improves both spouses' well-beings and the welfare gain is higher for couples when income gap between the husband and the wife is larger. Chapter 2 empirically examines the impact of privatization reform on gender wage gap in urban labor market based on a comprehensive nationwide survey, the Chinese Household Income Projects (CHIP). We observe, between 1995 and 2007, the gender wage gap rises, and the progress of privatization increases women’s productivity. The results of decomposition suggest that the increase in gender discrimination, which is associated with the rapid growth of non-state sector, contributes to widening gender wage gap. Although privatization increase gender segregation in occupational attainments, it is less obvious that segregation can account for the gender wage gap. In Chapter 3, using the 1979 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79), we find mothers earn less on average even after controlling for other wage determinants. The wage penalty associated with motherhood is insignificant in the early career, and arises partly due to mothers accumulating less work experience. As a result, late mothers experience stronger (weaker) returns to work experience before (after) their transition to motherhood. The differentials in returns to work experience are robust to controlling for occupational skill requirements and time spent out of employment.

Abstract:
AbstractUsing appropriate diagrams is generally considered efficacious in communication. However, although diagrams are extensively used in printed and digital media, people in general rarely construct diagrams to use in common everyday communication. Furthermore, instruction on diagram use for communicative purposes is uncommon in formal education and, when students are required to communicate what they have learned, the usual expectation is they will use words – not diagrams. Requiring diagram inclusion in essays, for example, would be almost unheard of. Consequently, current understanding about student capabilities in this area is very limited. The aim of this study therefore was to contribute to addressing this gap: it comprised a qualitative exploration of 12 undergraduate students’ diagram use in two essays (in which they were asked to include at least one diagram). Analysis focused on identifying the kinds of diagrams produced, and the effectiveness with which those diagrams were used. Useful functions that the diagrams served included clarification, summarization, integration of points, and provision of additional information and/or perspectives in visual form. However, there were also redundancies, as well as unclear, schematically erroneous, and overly complicated representations in some of the diagrams that the students constructed. These findings are discussed in terms of needs, opportunities, and challenges in instructional provision.

Abstract:
India is a large and rapidly growing economy. The energy requirements of the country in terms of oil products and natural gas is also huge. Given its vast geographical size, there is ever-growing need to transport these oil & gas products over large distances but economically. For this purpose, several new projects for laying of new pipeline networks are at different stages of planning. In order to keep the cost of such large pipeline projects lower, countries around the world have shifted to higher strength API grades of steel. This was facilitated by advances in steel-making and processing technology and modern facilities that came up in advanced countries. India is no different and we have seen a gradual shift towards higher strength API grades being used for pipelines. Essar Steel has been a major producer of API grades of steel in India over the last 15 years initially through its hot-strip mill and more recently adding a state-of-the-art 5M wide plate mill as well as pipe mills, both LSAW & HSAW. Different alloy designs have been used around the world to produce high strength and high toughness API grades. These have produced essentially two types of microstructures which are either ferrite + pearlite or ferrite + acicular ferrite. But these microstructures show varying response to the pipe-making process. Choice of alloy design also has a major bearing on the cost of steel, but is partly influenced by mill capability. At Essar, while cost was a major determining criterion for selection of suitable alloy design, mill capability was not a constraint. Essar Steel has successfully produced X-80 plates and pipes with a modified HTP alloy design and using the new facilities of plate mill & pipe mill. The paper gives some of the key highlights of this development activity. This was a collaborative effort between the metallurgists & engineers at Essar Steel India Limited and experts from CBMM.

Abstract:
In industrial countries as well as in developing countries there is a continuous growth of electricity consumption. The normal way to meet these requirements is the stepwise extension of electricity producing plants. In countries where clean fuel is available at acceptable prices the advantages of combined cycle plants in terms of efficiency and of smooth meeting the requirements can be used. The following essay concentrates on the influences of design criterias and ambient conditions on efficiency, output and plant cost for the type of CCP which is most frequently excecuted. As a result of an optimization an executed plant is described also with regard to lay out, required space and erection time.

Abstract:
With the development at infrared guidance weapon, the survival of the ship, especially in high risk areas, is facing serious challenges. In order to improve its survival ability, infrared suppression system emerges. Marine gas turbine exhaust ejector system is its core component, which is responsible for reducing or even eliminating the infrared radiation signal of marine gas turbine exhaust system. Based on collecting data on many sorts of ejectors, we sort out literature related to gas turbine exhaust ejector. From the view of ejector structure, the paper briefly describes the development of gas turbine exhaust ejector used on ships in domestic and foreign. Put forward two major structural innovations: the structure of nozzle changes from circular to rectangular and diffuser adopts multilevel structure. A new type of marine gas turbine exhaust ejector was designed. Ejector model is simplified. Use numerical simulation method to predict the single stage ejector and multi-stage ejectors. Further structural optimization plan and design can be made based on this essay.

Abstract:
The FLUENT6.2 software is adopted for numerical simulating heat transfer and flow characteristic of the gas when it flow through rectangular tube bundles in transverse direction, the array separation of tubes effected to heat transfer and flow is analyzed, the correlation equation of heat transfer characteristic is derived, and bases on the velocity distributing the rational tube arrangement is adopt to optimize economizer. Taking a certain power plant’s 200MW boiler economizer as an example, the porous medium model and heat exchanger model are employed for simulating. The study result indicates that: the heat-exchange performance of the economizer taking variable-pitch tube arrangement is excelled than the primary one, the discrepancy of gas pressure drop of them is narrow. The essay has direct significance for the structure optimizing and increasing heat exchange efficiency of power plant economizer.

Abstract:
This study deals with a new heat exchanger design developed by DGA Essais propulseurs [inventor: A. Foata - patents 1–4] which should improve heat transfer compared with standard gas to liquid exchangers tube banks, present better compactness without weighing down the drop loss and ensure the behaviour under drastic operating conditions (1600°C and Mach 2). This new design is based on a bundle composed of nine pairs of spiral tubes which are one to one angular drifted. The predictions of the thermal performances are so fussy whatsoever by using experimental test rig or CFD computations. On one hand, the test rig doesn’t allow to fulfil the entire range of operating conditions. And yet the standard operating conditions can shade the influence of temperature gradients on the aero thermal behaviour of the spiral bundles. On the other hand, in order to obtain reliable numerical predictions of heat transfers, the spiral bundle meshing refinement is crucial to simulate accurately the flow structure and the temperature gradients close to the inner walls. Moreover, if the grooves are explicitly taken into account in the numerical model, the computational grids required will be too fine to guarantee realistic computational time. So firstly, experimental and numerical approaches are used jointly in order to show the new heat exchanger design is sustainable. Optimization of the heat exchanger will be performed in the next phase of this study.

Abstract:
