Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper surveys the rhetorical works of the so-called School of Gaza of the late fifth and early sixth centuries in light of the recent wave of scholarship on the School. It focuses on themes, rhetorical genres, and structural features. The Gazan repertoire includes “real life” orations, declamations, dialexeis, progymnasmatic pieces, and oratorical paratexts such as preliminary dialexeis and protheōriai. The paper seeks to provide a map to this important but neglected body of texts, synthesizing recent scholarship and adding some of the author’s own observations along the way.

Historical research concerning Gaza and its region has long been limited to written sources. Archeological discoveries have recently been added to it thanks to different sources : the excavation of the Blakhiyah site on the coast, a particularly rich private collection and a monetary hoard discovered in Rafah. It is in support of all these discoveries and by taking up all the existing documentation that the history of Gaza and its region are reviewed by gathering all the numismatic, literary and archaeological information of this new equipment. Particularly for the Persian and Hellenistic periods, the documentary contribution of numismatics makes it possible to envisage a specific place in Gaza as a specific currency issuing workshop, with local influence by strikes to local types, and with a wider radiation by Athenian type strikes. In addition, the numismatic and archaeological discoveries thus uncovered allow to glimpse an old and deep dimension of the relations between the city and the Arab world, as well as the role of these relations during the Hasmonean and Roman period

Poinsotte, Jean-Michel. Paris 4, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1991PA040159.

Full text
Abstract:
Didactic purpose and polemic activity are traditionally linked with the ancient Latin poetry: this double vocation can be found in the writings (instructions and apologetic poem) of the first Christian Latin poet, commodianus, in the middle of the third century living in an apocalyptic atmosphere, he teaches his heathen and Christian brethren by criticizing idolatry, Judaism, and the shameful behavior of the Christians themselves. Though almost always indirect, his anti-Judaic polemics is scathing, and it takes a prominent part in the poem. Commodianus'themes are consonant with the polemic tradition which set up one century before: because of their wrong cruel, conceited, impious "nature", the Jews are rejected - for ever, as commodianus thinks, and the gentiles called on. To base his arguments on an indisputable ground, the poet most of the time takes his stand on the Old Testament (prophets and psalms), through a book of testimonia, identical with the collection Cyprian, bishop of cartage, used

Abstract: The main objective of this research is to peer through the trajectory of Luiz Gonzaga Pinto do Gama (1830-1882) in order to understand how the literate has placed himself in front of the different debates he took part. The study proposed part of the premise that the trajectory of Gama life can illuminate decisive aspects of the time in which he lived, such as his childhood in captivity, his late literacy followed by the conquest of the post of shyster, a self-taught in subjects, like legal subjects, he was notable by military in the cause of the liberation of slaves at the same time he took care of creating his own history as a pathway between slavery and the full exercise of freedom and citizenship. Therefore, the research will be based on the various professional, institutional and political inserts of Luiz Gama to analyze his positioning in relation to fundamental issues of his time, with special emphasis on matters related to the captivity of Africans and descendants in Brazil. The investigation will have as begining the year 1848, when Luiz Gama reached freedom after spending part of childhood in captivity, and it will end in 1882, the year of his death. In the composition of the documentary corpus investigated in the research, in addition to the main works of Gama, are considered newspaper articles from the time that he mentions them, articles that belonged to Gama, and letters he exchanged with friends and people close to Him.

Yafimava, Hanna. Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030069.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural gas is not only a mainstay of the Russian economy, but also a major instrument of the Kremlin’s foreign policy. For Russia, the gas industry is used not only to sustain its economy and maintain high fiscal revenues but also to regain its place as a great power in world politics. Despite recent reforms, the domestic gas market in Russia still cannot substitute all benefits from exports. The new Russian gas strategy intends to promote Russia as a major producer, exporter and partner. These three characteristics will be the subject to this thesis. The European market remains a prime target for Moscow today, despite the efforts for exports diversification. This is proved by Gazprom's strategy of securing existing pipelines and building new gas routes to Europe. Energy links, established more than forty years ago, between Europe and Russia have led to a strong interdependence between the two partners. This interdependence is neither alarming, nor dangerous, it has to serve as a motivation for the establishment of a reliable energy partnership. Even though the two partners have divergent interests, the progress of the bilateral cooperation depends on their ability to adapt to this situation of interdependence

Almughany, Nihad. "A future for the past : architecture and urban conservation of historic buildings and areas in Gaza, Palestine." Thesis, Glasgow School of Art, 2000. http://radar.gsa.ac.uk/4567/.

Full text
Abstract:
The continual loss and neglect of historic buildings and areas is due to many factors. Among the most important are the inadequacy of existing legislation and the inability of institutions to protect the built heritage. I do not only mean the protection from the threat of demolition and decay, but also the readiness to promote change in order to contribute to socio-economic development. Therefore, conservation strategies should establish appropriate legislative and administrative frameworks to guide conservation initiatives, otherwise, the continuing lack of a legislative strategy will remain a problem. Palestine is in the process of defining itself as a nation. In this process its built heritage plays an important role in that it embodies its culture and traditions and is an important part of its cultural identity. At present Palestine's built heritage is largely neglected and parts of it are being lost every day. The absence of public awareness of the values of its historic heritage leads to detrimental interventions into historic buildings and areas. There are many factors which affect the way in which a society relates to its built heritage. One of these factors is the rules and procedures which govern the relations between citizens and their built heritage. The thesis addresses this issue in the context that the present legislative structure for conservation in Palestine is the product of laws issued by the successive powers that occupied Palestine in the last centuries and, what is more important, Palestine is currently reviewing its whole legislation and administration structures. The aim of the thesis is to pave the way for the establishment of a legislative and administrative framework that would underpin a conservation strategy for Gaza, Palestine. The research starts by surveying the literature in the field of study to determine the different principles and attitudes within the current conservation discourse, placing special emphasis on legislation for the conservation of historic buildings and areas. An analysis of the current Palestinian legislative and institutional systems is followed by an appraisal of the city itself and its built heritage. Two case studies of cities which are in some ways comparable to Gaza, the cities of Jeddah and Cairo, are analysed in some detail. The findings are used as a means to compare and evaluate conservation strategies for the city of Gaza. The study concludes by recommending a comprehensive conservation legislation model which would function within a local and national legislative frameworks, would have clear aims relevant to a particular place, and enable an administrative framework capable of efficiently implementing conservation initiatives.

Abstract:
This thesis will study the development of the Palestinian women's movement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the Mandate period (1920) to the outbreak of the Al Aqsa Intifada (2000). This work will attempt to outline the evolution of this movement and the impact of two factors that have significantly affected the form and course of its development; the first of which and the principal force is Palestinian Nationalism; the second is Islamism.
Nationalism and Islamism are presented here as two formations that functioned separately and in conjunction to present impediments to the ability of an independent Palestinian women's movement to develop and implement a social feminist agenda aimed at establishing gender equality and ensuring women's legal and political rights within Palestinian society.

Abstract:
In this chapter I argue that the state of Israel is legitimate, but only within its original boundaries and that the Palestinians are the main victims of the conflict, victims of Israeli colonialism. The history of the region over the last sixty years can be convincingly explained in terms of the strategy of the ‘iron wall’, first expounded by Jabotinsky, which advocates negotiation only from a position of unassailable strength. The basic deal of ‘land for peace’ expressed in UN Resolution 242 was sound, but never effectively implemented and Rabin, the only Israeli prime minister prepared to negotiate, was murdered. The recent, brutal onslaughts on Gaza give little grounds for optimism.

Abstract:
This paper explores the relevant knowledge in philosophy, psychology, art theory, and visual culture dealing with the phenomenon of the spectator. Spectatorship is explored through complex relationships between authors, works, observers, and the environment, which condition the view and consider how social and cultural patterns mediate the image. In this approach, interest is no longer primarily focused on the visual object but on visuality, a complex set of conditions in which a work of art is created, observed, and interpreted, researching the history of the gaze theory: perception and its physiological and cultural conditioning, the implicitness of the observer in the aesthetics of the reception, psychoanalytic theories about the constitution of the subject with a gaze, feminist ideas of voyeurism, and the male gaze, theories on technological and cultural conditioning of the scopic regimes, the cultural history of gaze and the gaze politics that approach viewing as possession of power. An analysis of the theory shows that the role of the body as a perceiving mechanism is present in the naturalistic approach to observation but is avoided due to its subjectivity and relativity. Although it was created in the 1960s, the theory of gaze has roots in the hermeneutics of art history and the aesthetics of reception. The cultural determination of gaze, its dependence on social norms, and the technological conditions of the medium indicate that our view of art and the visual world has been learned, which opens spaces for the acceptance of other gazes that are equally valuable.

Abstract:
Geometries of the gaze in the Calabrian landscapeHaving lost their function of sighting as an instrument of strategic control, inclusion and protection from presumed pirate invasions, the coastal towers of Calabria Ultra, represented in the Diary of Wonders of the end of the sixteenth century, called Codice Romano Carratelli, will act as the key and device of the gaze that links the land to the expanse of water. A vast geometric, precise and linear system that will connect, through the gaze, the “terracqueo landscape”, unstable and multiform, continuously changing. The ninety-nine watercolour maps of the Codice are an immense heritage of clues, traces, geometries and measurements on which to think in order to bring to the surface of the earth, military tactics that have become latent in history as a palimpsest. The use of ancient and modern techniques of survey and graphic representation, want to accompany the contemporary traveler to turn his gaze towards new strategies of “reception”, rather than aversion of a silent landscape, where merge and mix. The “stratigraphies of the gaze” are sections perpendicular to the “horizontal plane” of a “living” landscape from which routes, artefacts, signs, traces, fragments of history can be distilled for a widespread cultural regeneration of the territory. The experimental character of this research, recounted in these pages, lies in the application of an innovative strategy of communication and information, based on the creation of cultural routes structured in museums, widespread or located on the coastal landscape of Calabria.

Abstract:
Introduction: Pompe disease (PD) affects lysosomal digestion due to absence or low action of the enzyme acid α-glucosidase (GAA), with accumulation of glycogen, causing overflow of enzymes and autophagy, which affects striated muscle. PD is divided into infantile, juvenile, and adult clinical forms, with severity determined by amount of residual GAA activity. Case: P1) 45-year-old man admitted with acute respiratory failure (RF), starts mechanical ventilation. History of weakness, dyspnea, dysphagia. He had decreased proximal muscle strength at lower limbs (LL). Sequencing of GAA gene: autosomal recessive deficiency of two variants. Apnea-hypopnea-index (AHI):10.5. GAA enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) was requested. Judicially denied by disease progression. P2) 40-year-old man presented with loss of muscle strength at LL for 15 years, associated with snoring, daytime somnolence. Brother with similar complaints. He had proximal muscle weakness at LL. Positive genetic panel for PD. AHI:23.5. Judicially released ERT treatment and reported improvement. Discussion: Adult form of PD manifests itself with mild phenotype, with presence of residual GAA activity, which causes different clinical expressions. Main manifestations are symmetric proximal muscle weakness in LL and Gowers’ sign. Frequent death cause in late form is RF, which occurs early, unlike other neuromuscular diseases. In Brazil, PD is underdiagnosed, with approximately 2500 cases. Treatment is performed with Myozyme®, an ERT, not available in SUS, which makes treatment difficult. Conclusion: PD is a serious condition, with high underdiagnosis because of its similarity to other myopathies, which allows disease progression. Furthermore, the variability of GAA mutations allows for distinct phenotypes

Abstract:
Abstract: The article presents a study of the relationship of Le Corbusier with very a important constructive architectural mechanism in his work as the window is. During that route we study different issues affecting the definition of the window and its relationship to the architecture that contains it; in particular focusing on the idea of spatial continuity and the conceptual and physical dissolution of the limits of space. For that purpose we take different approaches ranging from the purely conceptual to the relationships established between the constructive solutions and their visual impact on the architectural object. This brief history of the Window at Le Corbusier is focused on his domestic work through a chronological sequence that allows an overview of the evolution of the element in his work. We can see how the transition occurs from the fenêtre en longueur to the pan de verre aménagé, through numerous aspirations, configurations and variations on the gaze theme and the constructive mechanism that defines it. Abstract:
We report the case of a healthy 25-year-old man presenting with sudden onset dizziness, strabismus, and cloudy vision that improved when he closed one of his eyes. He denied pain with eye movement or color desaturation, as well as history of recent immunization or febrile illness. He did not present any other neurologic symptom, but he affirmed having had a limited episode of a discrete strabismus four months before. In his first assessment at the emergency room his neurologic examination revealed a 30° exotropia of the right eye on the primary gaze position along with adduction deficit and abduction nystagmus bilaterally on conjugated horizontal eye movement, characterizing an internuclear ophthalmoplegia on both eyes. He also presented with asymmetrical convergence deficit, with inability on completing adduction on his right eye. On the vertical upward gaze there was also a vertical nystagmus. Eye fundus examination did not show retinal and optic nerve alterations. Visual acuity was normal. This set of findings qualified a WEBINO (wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia). During investigation, lumbar puncture showed mild hyperproteinrachia, with absence of oligoclonal bands and normal CSF (cerebrospinal fluid GigG (immunoglobulin G) index. He was submitted to a course of pulse therapy with methylprednisolone. Neuroaxis magnetic resonance imaging evidenced a demyelinating periaqueductal lesion, involving medium longitudinal fasciculus, ponto-mesencephalic junction and mesencephalic tegmentum, without gadolinium enhancement. As he remained symptomatic, plasmapheresis was indicated, with complete remission of symptoms afterwards. Following his investigation the tests for both anti-aquaporin-4 and anti-MOG antibodies were negative, and until the conclusion of this report, a diagnosis of clinical isolated syndrome remained as the main hypothesis.

Abstract:
The planning of commercial activities cannot limit itself to purely economic and management dimensions, but should be central to any debate on the city. This inquiry contributes to illuminate the city and commercial systems production mechanisms that can be either mutually reinforcing or mutually negating. Our interpretation of the relationship between the commercial spaces and the city is based on the study of commercial models that characterize Lisbon. This analysis of its recent commercial history - from 1970 to 2010 - has led to the definition of three macro - categories of commercial systems that illustrate three types of relationships between the city and its commercial dimension: symbiotic, commensal, and parasitic.
