Abstract:
Historical research concerning Gaza and its region has long been limited to written sources. Archeological discoveries have recently been added to it thanks to different sources : the excavation of the Blakhiyah site on the coast, a particularly rich private collection and a monetary hoard discovered in Rafah. It is in support of all these discoveries and by taking up all the existing documentation that the history of Gaza and its region are reviewed by gathering all the numismatic, literary and archaeological information of this new equipment. Particularly for the Persian and Hellenistic periods, the documentary contribution of numismatics makes it possible to envisage a specific place in Gaza as a specific currency issuing workshop, with local influence by strikes to local types, and with a wider radiation by Athenian type strikes. In addition, the numismatic and archaeological discoveries thus uncovered allow to glimpse an old and deep dimension of the relations between the city and the Arab world, as well as the role of these relations during the Hasmonean and Roman period

Poinsotte, Jean-Michel. Paris 4, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1991PA040159.

Full text
Abstract:
Didactic purpose and polemic activity are traditionally linked with the ancient Latin poetry: this double vocation can be found in the writings (instructions and apologetic poem) of the first Christian Latin poet, commodianus, in the middle of the third century living in an apocalyptic atmosphere, he teaches his heathen and Christian brethren by criticizing idolatry, Judaism, and the shameful behavior of the Christians themselves. Though almost always indirect, his anti-Judaic polemics is scathing, and it takes a prominent part in the poem. Commodianus'themes are consonant with the polemic tradition which set up one century before: because of their wrong cruel, conceited, impious "nature", the Jews are rejected - for ever, as commodianus thinks, and the gentiles called on. To base his arguments on an indisputable ground, the poet most of the time takes his stand on the Old Testament (prophets and psalms), through a book of testimonia, identical with the collection Cyprian, bishop of cartage, used

Abstract: The main objective of this research is to peer through the trajectory of Luiz Gonzaga Pinto do Gama (1830-1882) in order to understand how the literate has placed himself in front of the different debates he took part. The study proposed part of the premise that the trajectory of Gama life can illuminate decisive aspects of the time in which he lived, such as his childhood in captivity, his late literacy followed by the conquest of the post of shyster, a self-taught in subjects, like legal subjects, he was notable by military in the cause of the liberation of slaves at the same time he took care of creating his own history as a pathway between slavery and the full exercise of freedom and citizenship. Therefore, the research will be based on the various professional, institutional and political inserts of Luiz Gama to analyze his positioning in relation to fundamental issues of his time, with special emphasis on matters related to the captivity of Africans and descendants in Brazil. The investigation will have as begining the year 1848, when Luiz Gama reached freedom after spending part of childhood in captivity, and it will end in 1882, the year of his death. In the composition of the documentary corpus investigated in the research, in addition to the main works of Gama, are considered newspaper articles from the time that he mentions them, articles that belonged to Gama, and letters he exchanged with friends and people close to Him.

Yafimava, Hanna. Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030069.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural gas is not only a mainstay of the Russian economy, but also a major instrument of the Kremlin’s foreign policy. For Russia, the gas industry is used not only to sustain its economy and maintain high fiscal revenues but also to regain its place as a great power in world politics. Despite recent reforms, the domestic gas market in Russia still cannot substitute all benefits from exports. The new Russian gas strategy intends to promote Russia as a major producer, exporter and partner. These three characteristics will be the subject to this thesis. The European market remains a prime target for Moscow today, despite the efforts for exports diversification. This is proved by Gazprom's strategy of securing existing pipelines and building new gas routes to Europe. Energy links, established more than forty years ago, between Europe and Russia have led to a strong interdependence between the two partners. This interdependence is neither alarming, nor dangerous, it has to serve as a motivation for the establishment of a reliable energy partnership. Even though the two partners have divergent interests, the progress of the bilateral cooperation depends on their ability to adapt to this situation of interdependence

Almughany, Nihad. "A future for the past : architecture and urban conservation of historic buildings and areas in Gaza, Palestine." Thesis, Glasgow School of Art, 2000. http://radar.gsa.ac.uk/4567/.

Full text
Abstract:
The continual loss and neglect of historic buildings and areas is due to many factors. Among the most important are the inadequacy of existing legislation and the inability of institutions to protect the built heritage. I do not only mean the protection from the threat of demolition and decay, but also the readiness to promote change in order to contribute to socio-economic development. Therefore, conservation strategies should establish appropriate legislative and administrative frameworks to guide conservation initiatives, otherwise, the continuing lack of a legislative strategy will remain a problem. Palestine is in the process of defining itself as a nation. In this process its built heritage plays an important role in that it embodies its culture and traditions and is an important part of its cultural identity. At present Palestine's built heritage is largely neglected and parts of it are being lost every day. The absence of public awareness of the values of its historic heritage leads to detrimental interventions into historic buildings and areas. There are many factors which affect the way in which a society relates to its built heritage. One of these factors is the rules and procedures which govern the relations between citizens and their built heritage. The thesis addresses this issue in the context that the present legislative structure for conservation in Palestine is the product of laws issued by the successive powers that occupied Palestine in the last centuries and, what is more important, Palestine is currently reviewing its whole legislation and administration structures. The aim of the thesis is to pave the way for the establishment of a legislative and administrative framework that would underpin a conservation strategy for Gaza, Palestine. The research starts by surveying the literature in the field of study to determine the different principles and attitudes within the current conservation discourse, placing special emphasis on legislation for the conservation of historic buildings and areas. An analysis of the current Palestinian legislative and institutional systems is followed by an appraisal of the city itself and its built heritage. Two case studies of cities which are in some ways comparable to Gaza, the cities of Jeddah and Cairo, are analysed in some detail. The findings are used as a means to compare and evaluate conservation strategies for the city of Gaza. The study concludes by recommending a comprehensive conservation legislation model which would function within a local and national legislative frameworks, would have clear aims relevant to a particular place, and enable an administrative framework capable of efficiently implementing conservation initiatives.

Abstract:
This thesis will study the development of the Palestinian women's movement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the Mandate period (1920) to the outbreak of the Al Aqsa Intifada (2000). This work will attempt to outline the evolution of this movement and the impact of two factors that have significantly affected the form and course of its development; the first of which and the principal force is Palestinian Nationalism; the second is Islamism.
Nationalism and Islamism are presented here as two formations that functioned separately and in conjunction to present impediments to the ability of an independent Palestinian women's movement to develop and implement a social feminist agenda aimed at establishing gender equality and ensuring women's legal and political rights within Palestinian society.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work is a continuation of my research on the literature of contemporary Mexican women in the fifties and sixties, who gain great fame for their works published during the last two decades of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century. Their uniqueness is characterized by the fictionalization of historical themes. In this sense, the present work aims to deconstruct the traditional image of Mexican women in literature, as well as unravel, question and improve their current social and political situation by restoring and defending their essential roles in the history of Mexico. Thus, the novels chosen for this research are: Mal de amores (1996) by Ángeles Mastretta, Nadie me verá llorar (1999) by Cristina Rivera Garza and Caramelo (2002) by Sandra Cisneros, which bear similarities in themes and writing techniques as well as noticeable differences. The inclusion of Sandra Cisneros’ novel is due to her contribution to a Mexican counterpoint, which allows us to probe into the cultural contradictions and historical traumas that Mexican women have experienced. In consideration of the Mexican history that has been continually rewritten and reinterpreted in contemporary literature and the themes that women writers at the turn of the century are particularly interested in, we find three essentials: the Mexican Revolution, modernity and cultural differences. The present study reveals the value that literary texts have in the process of restoring the alternative memory of different social and ethnic groups. In addition to offering an abundant corpus of examples for literary criticism, especially for feminist critique and cultural studies, it helps us recognize the discursive traces of subalternization processes—subaltern women’s marginality and silence as well as their claim to an existing and vivid female memory in Mexican history. In order to fulfill the above-mentioned purposes, the study initially traced previous studies of postmodernity, focusing on theories about subalternity and spatiality, such as spatial turn and the third space. Then, some responses, regarding the threat of transculturation, were proposed involving decolonial turn, ambivalence, mimicry and hybridization. The neohistoric perspective, which focuses on the study of the relationship between history and literature, facilitates the understanding of the importance and meaning of feminine writing. The literary theories and the corresponding methodologies mentioned above, bearing the close relationship with the literature of women, serve to make a more effective literary analysis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the circulation of photographic postcards depicting lynching events in the United States, as well as the changing contexts and gaze. The initial mailing of the postcards to far away family and friends, some including handwriting on the versos, makes apparent the desire to spread white supremacist ideals across the country. These photographs, often depicting the victim’s suffering body amongst a crowd of people, were then placed in family photo albums, hidden in attics, or sold in flea markets. It was in these locations that collector James Allen found the photographs depicting lynching events that compose the Allen/Littlefield Collection, which toured the United States from 2000-2005 in the exhibition "Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America." Through the utilization of the accompanying catalog, I discuss the circulation of multiple mailed photographic postcards with handwritten texts on the versos, the reporting of lynching events in newspapers from varying regions of the United States, and the recent exhibitions of the Allen/Littlefield Collection, as well as art works reappropriating lynching photographs. It is my aim to illustrate the impact of context on the viewing of lynching images and how the gaze of the spectator changes over time.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I investigate American specular narrative which displays a significant level of visual empiricism and examine the implications of the eyewitness perspective such narrative assumes. Based on the epistemological assumption that "to see is to know," specular narrative imagines an empirical access (via visual processes of the gaze) to a knowable reality, and uses the figure of the eyewitness (by way of narration, focalization, and narrative technique) to render a supposedly transparent relation between narrative and reality. This study draws upon theories of narrative, realism, subjectivity, and the gaze to explore this narrative eyewitness, tracking how the impulse to construct an authentic American identity, which materializes during American colonization, influences early American discourse and recurs as a specular realism in later American narrative. I examine how the illusion of the eyewitness sustains Realist ideology in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century narrative (William Dean Howells' A Hazard of New Fortunes, Henry James' The Spoils ofPoynton, and Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth); how new spatial and temporal paradigms created by automotive technology affect the eyewitness (and a particular vision of America) in the American road book, specifically Theodore Dreiser's A Hoosier Holiday, and how the specular fetishism of the nonfiction novel, particularly Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, problematizes narrative objectivity and sutures the reader into the narrative as eyewitness

Abstract:
From its beginnings, Christianity has been fundamentally conditioned by the idea of repentance. However, while the institutional practice of repentance in the early Christian world has received much scholarly attention, relatively little exists which deals with the development and applications of the wider concept (of which its institutional aspect is only a part). The purpose of this dissertation is to provide both a re-assessment and a re-framing of this foundational concept of repentance in Christian late antiquity, with special reference to formative Greek monastic sources from the fifth to seventh centuries. Following a discussion of scholarship, terms, and methodology in chapter one, the question of defining repentance in the Greek patristic world is addressed in chapter two, looking first at the major sources for later approaches (the Septuagint, the New Testament, and Classical/Hellenistic texts). A significant re-appraisal of the dominant scholarly narrative of repentance in the early church will be offered in the following chapter, making way for a close study of the chosen monastic authors: Mark the Monk, Barsanuphius and John of Gaza, and John Climacus in turn. A threefold framework whereby their respective approaches to repentance can be understood in their integrity and diversity will be suggested, involving 1) initial or 'cognisant' repentance, in which the sinner recognizes his or her fallen state and turns it heavenward; 2) 'existential' repentance, which involves the living out of repentance as a way of life, governing all the Christian's actions and intentions; 3) 'Christ-like' repentance, which serves as the summit and ultimate goal of the Christian's personal repentance, whereby the loving and sacrificial 'repentance' of Christ for others and the world at large is assimilated and worked out in the Christian's own life. It will be argued that this framework provides a new and significant hermeneutical lens through which not simply the early Christian concept of repentance in itself can be better understood, but also through which the development of early Christian self-identity and self-perception, particularly in an ascetic context, can be gauged.

Abstract:

Abstract: This dissertation aims at investigating a phenomena called Judaization of Palestine: its purpose, politics, means, instruments, techniques, reasoning, objectives and interests and measure its impact on Israel-Palestine matter and lives of people living in Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) - palestinians and jewish settlers. In that manner, the main manifestations of this phenomenon will be historically and analitically examined, such as the development of the Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories and the legal and burocratical instruments of social control over the Palestinian population between 1967 and 2013. The central problem of this investigation is focused on the oficial arguments of the israeli authorities about the Jewish presence in the OPT and the political impasse with the palestinians, linked to the paradigm of security and conflict in opposition to the Judaization of Palestine spectrum, which is about colonization, dispossession, volunteer and involunteer desplacement and social control of a foreigner dominant social ethnical group above other indigenous and subdued one. I intend to support the judaization narrative - in opposition to the zionist hegemonic narrative - as the most appropriate to understand some of the central aspects of the dispute between israelis and palestinians over that land, as the spatial fragmentation of Cisjordani, the Gaza Strip isolation, the silent displacement occuring in East Jerusalem and the maintenance of status quo. From this we can reach the relevance and justification for the elaboration of this dissertation

Abstract:
The Gaia hypothesis (GH) proposed in the 1970's by Lovelock and Margulis is here analyzed from a history and philosophy of science perspective. The historical analysis of GH's elaboration and rich reception across various disciplines (climatology, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, evolutionary biology, ecology and complexity sciences) and within environmentalist movements leads me to argue that a major ambiguity plagues the relevant literatures: what is GH? I show that GH has been considered as a hypothesis, as a theory, as a research program, or as a philosophy of nature. Each of these interpretations is then analyzed. An epistemological and historical characterisation of GH shows that GH should not be interpreted as a hypothesis which ought to be confronted directly to empirical facts, but as a theory elaborated with models. I elucidate the methodological role and status of GH's models and theories before clarifying the concepts and expliciting the fundamental hypotheses underlying these models and theories. The recognition of Gaia as a system constituted of living organisms and the environment with which they internet led to the constitution of a new research program: the Earth system sciences. I offer a history and a characterisation of this research program, specify the philosophical shifts it brought about concepts such as life, the environment and nature and I analyze the relationships between Lovelock's conceptions of Gaia and the environmental prescriptions he pronounced in the name of Gaia

Abstract:

The images of dissected pregnant women in William Hunter's atlas Anatomia Uteri Humani Gravidi published in 1774 were among the first realistic, highly detailed illustrations of fetal development and pregnant female physiology. Commissioned by Hunter, the images established scientific truth about female reproductive anatomy, a previously misunderstood field, and aided in the elevation of the work of male-midwives to that of respected obstetricians. The fetal image he presented, like a Lacanian mirror, also opened the door into the psyche of William Hunter. Driven by his passion for anatomical research, Hunter pursued the uncharted territories of female anatomy and fetal development in a narcissistic path of self-aggrandizement. The thesis herein compares Hunter's images to historical images to examine Hunter's unique and innovative qualities. Hunter's images demystify the Jungian maternal archetype and reflect his desire to create artful images. The ethical use of the human body in the arts is also discussed.

Santos-Peral, Pablo.

Full text
Abstract:
Galactic archaeology aims at unveiling the history of the Milky Way by analysing different stellar properties: chemical abundances, kinematics, dynamics and ages. In particular, the abundance of α-elements (e.g. O, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ti) with respect to iron ([α/Fe]) is an important fossil signature to trace the chemical evolution of the Galactic disc’s populations, i.e. the thin and the thick disc. The goal of this thesis is to explore the main issues concerning the determination of high-precision abundances from observed spectral data and, by using the high-quality astrometric data provided by the Gaia space mission, analyse the chemodynamical properties of the Galactic disc (e.g. radial abundance gradients, role of stellar migration, age-abundance relations) in order to infer the formation and evolution of the Milky Way.The implemented algorithm was the automated abundance estimation procedure GAUGUIN, which is integrated into the RVS (Radial Velocity Spectrometer) DPAC analysis pipeline of the Gaia mission. We first applied our method to derive [Mg/Fe] abundances for 2210 solar neighbourhood stars observed by the HARPS ESO spectrograph (high spectral resolution: R ∼ 115000), and parametrised by the AMBRE Project (effective temperature, surface gravity, overall metallicity [M/H], [α/Fe] abundance, and radial velocity). We found that the definition of continuum to normalise the observed spectra is responsible for the largest fraction of the uncertainty in the abundance estimate for the metal-rich stellar spectra. We show a methodology that significantly improve the abundance estimate precision, and allows to observe a decreasing trend in the [Mg/Fe] abundance even at supersolar metallicites ([M/H] > 0), partly solving the apparent discrepancies between the observed flat trend in the literature, and the steeper slope predicted by Galactic chemical evolution models. We used these new [Mg/Fe] abundance measurements to interpret the Galactic disc formation and evolution. To this purpose, we estimated ages and orbital properties for 366 main sequence turn-off (MSTO) stars, using PARSEC isochrones, together with astrometric and photometric values from Gaia DR2. We observe a steeper [Mg/Fe] gradient, compared to literature values, which is a direct result of the improvement of the abundance estimates in the metal-rich regime. Moreover, we find a significant spread of stellar ages at any given [Mg/Fe] value, and observe a clear correlated dispersion of the [Mg/Fe] abundance with the metallicity at a given age. While for [M/H] ≤ -0.2, a clear age-metallicity and age-[Mg/Fe] trends are observed, more metal-rich stars display ages from 3 up to 12 Gyr, describing an almost flat trend in the [M/H]-age and [Mg/Fe]-age relations. In addition, we found a significant fraction of radial migrated stars in the Galactic disc, for a wide range of stellar ages. Finally, we observe the appearance of a second chemical sequence at the outer disc, 10-12 Gyr ago. These stars are more metal-poor with respect to the coexisting stellar population in the inner parts of the disc, and show lower [Mg/Fe] abundances than prior disc stars of the same metallicity, leading to a chemical discontinuity. Our data favour the rapid formation of an early disc that settled in the inner regions, followed by the accretion of metal-poor gas, probably related to a major accretion event from a gas-rich satellite merger, that may have triggered the formation of the thin disc population

Abstract:
This thesis presents nine gazals of Jalal Uddin Rumi (1207-1273), founder of Whirling Dervishes Order of Konya in Turkey, translated from Persian directly to Portuguese in an interdisciplinary perspective involving History, Dance, Literature and Traductology. The conceptual fusion of Raqs (dancing) and Sama (hearing) - central themes of his poetry which was always done by scholars and translators is discussed herein. We also present and investigate the emergence of these concepts in the Islamic controversy regarding music and dance, in secular as in religious spheres, particularly between the 9th and 14th centuries. Authors who discussed the theme pointed out differences between dancing and mystical hearing; since the defense of Alghazali (1058- 1111) a new meaning was attributed to dance, which has, up until now, been accepted, regardless of setbacks and constraints in different places and times. The specific notion and terminology of dance in Rumis poetry is analyzed in the light of his own dialogue with the authors of this debate. We propose a translation methodology focusing on the dance metaphor which be according to the mystical hearing process.

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to investigating the role of warriors (identified and recognized as \"nguni\") in the Gaza power networks, formed in the south of present-day Mozambique during the 19th century. Associated with the inkosi and integrated with long-range developments, the warriors crossed borders in perspective of communication, attributing with their movement dimensions of reciprocity or interdiction, enunciated in a ritualized approach. In historiography, the reference to the warrior aligns in relation to two main axes of analysis, often presented in a related manner. The first describes aggressive behavior as supposedly inherent in \"primitive African\" man, in a reduction from social to natural, which retains the warrior in the timelessness of his own savagery. In the second, the economic perspective overlaps as an analytical foundation, presenting violence as the result of a combination of scarce resources and weak productive factors. Moving away from the interpretation of violence as a simple and universal human impulse and from the paradigm \"which focuses on the struggle for reproduction and competition for survival and status\", as the historian Jon Abbink remarked, this thesis aims to recompose the social relations of power, and domination that shaped the potentiality of the violent act, at a time when warriors interconnected histories and influenced their courses with their multiple movements and interactions.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores how architecture is valorized by the cultural artifacts, both visual and text-based, which present and describe it. It examines aspects of the Gothic Revival in early Victorian Britain, to consider the assimilation of models of evolving architectural discourse by one organization with specialized interest in its promotion, and adaptations of that discourse in the realm of popular culture. The dissertation focuses on the ideology of the Cambridge Camden Society, from its inception in 1839 through to 1850. The Society advocated an appreciation of Gothic churches both for aesthetic, and for religious and moral reasons. A key dimension of its mandate, captured in the rhetoric of ecclesiology, was to prioritize an empirical investigation of extant medieval churches. Findings were to be recorded on specially-devised questionnaires, called "church schemes," using a text-based, specially-encoded taxonomy. Given the availability both of extensive documentation by the Society concerning these schemes, and of almost seven hundred completed forms, areas of conformity and divergence between the prescriptive, instructional material, and the descriptive material which indicates the actual reception of the architecture, may be discerned. "Church visiting" hence became the primary means of personal engagement with the architecture, enacted through the elaborate ritual of scripted tourism spelled out by the church schemes and attendant pedagogical documents. The importance, and the implications, of tourism to members of the Cambridge Camden Society are addressed through an evaluation of travel theories and methodologies, developed, especially, since the 1990s. An understanding of ecclesiology in terms of travel theory enables it to be evaluated in a wider context, namely as part of an emerging tourist ethos based on expanding opportunities and incentives to travel through Britain. From this perspective, the Cambridge Camden Society is to be perceived as part of a larger consortium of advocates of tourism to sights of medieval architecture, who employed similar inducements and terminology, and who created such markers of architectural authenticity as travel guides to mediate the traveller's reception of a given sight. As a result, the possibilities of the widespread dissemination of at least the architectural components of ecclesiological ideals, as part of the groundswell of promotional material devoted to all things Gothic, were enhanced.

This academic paper interprets and analyzes the trajectory and cultural production of the poet, journalist, mason, abolitionist, lawyer ("rábula") and political leader Luiz Gama. The city of São Paulo was the space for his accomplishments, quintessential place for the emergence of his political and diasporic identity, to his legal struggles on behalf of enslaved and the stage for the emergence of liberal-republican positions wich, to Gama, Gama, were inseparable from slave liberation. We prioritize, in the analysis of their narratives, how Luiz Gama used race, identity, modernity and memory of slavery to mediate the social reality of São Paulo and ethno-racial relations. Under the analytical perspective of cultural studies and postcolonial criticism, we seek to find Luiz Gama in frames of an intellectuality formed beyond the national space
Este trabalho acadêmico interpreta e analisa a trajetória e produção cultural do poeta, jornalista, maçom, abolicionista, advogado (rábula) e líder político Luiz Gama.

This thesis describes how gaseous ion physics from cambridge became accepted and practised in france at the turn of the century. Chapter 1 compares researches on x-ray discharge in cambridge and paris during 1896-1898. J-j thomson and his students at the cavendish laboratory were investigating ions produced by x-rays. On the contrary, french physicists avoided any microphysical interpretation. Chapter 2 shows how paul langevin, trained in cambridge in 1898, became in 1900 a "missionary" for english ion physics in france. Langevin was not an exception : the dissemination of j. J. Thomson 's students formed an international network of ion specialists. Chapter 3 is a detailed narrative of langevin's research itinerary, and analyses the experimental methods of ion physics. Chapter 4 describes several cases of conversion. The french specialists of catmode rays, paul villard among them, ignored first the ions and "corpuscles" of j. J. Thomson. They rather studied the macroscopic physico-chemical properties of the rays. But, in 1904-1906, they abruptely decided to adopt thomson's point of view, which was already widely accepted ing-britain and germany

Buntin, Melanie Clare. "The mutual gaze : the location(s) of Allan Ramsay and James Thomson within an emerging eighteenth-century British literature." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6461/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis is to bring Allan Ramsay (1684-1748) and James Thomson (1700-1748) into close critical contact for the first time and, in so doing, deconstruct the paradigm of opposition which has previously attached to these two contemporaries. The thesis posits that the separation of Ramsay and Thomson has been effected, retrospectively, by the twentieth-century Scottish critical tradition. The narrow, cultural essentialism exhibited by this body of scholarship has been effectively challenged in recent decades by the work of Gerard Carruthers, and revisionary ‘Four Nations’ approaches to late eighteenth-century British literature have done much to reinstate the importance of what were previously viewed as marginal or peripheral literary locations. Ramsay and Thomson, however, have never been fully united in literary and cultural terms. This thesis demonstrates that Ramsay and Thomson shared, not only a chronological context, but also a creative context informed by a reciprocal engagement with the work of the other and posits that the relationship between these two lowland Scottish writers can be conceived of in terms of a sustained mutual gaze. James Thomson remains entrenched within an English literary canon, despite the efforts of Mary Jane Scott to reclaim him for his native country. Conversely, Allan Ramsay remains firmly rooted in his native Scottish soil as the father of the vernacular revival and the epitome of literary and cultural resistance to a supposed English cultural hegemony in the wake of the 1707 Act of Union between Scotland and England. It is true that Ramsay’s and Thomson’s creative trajectories exemplify the literary choices and cultural paths available to a Scottish writer in the years immediately following the Union of Parliaments, but to set them in creative opposition as a result of these choices is a critical commonplace which this thesis challenges. Thomson spent the greater part of his literary career in and around London, whilst Ramsay remained in Edinburgh until his death; clearly the corpora of these two writers were conditioned by the locations of their production. Hence, the thematic structure of this thesis relies on the notion of location, both physical and literary. The first two chapters of this thesis, ‘Edinburgh’ and ‘London’, illustrate the urban contexts of both writers; in so doing they suggest that a mutual gaze was sustained, not only between Ramsay and Thomson, but that a similarly reciprocal relationship and network of influence existed between the literary and cultural centres of Edinburgh and London. The third chapter of this thesis, ‘Nation’, traces the fluid and nuanced literary responses to the concept of nation in a period when national and literary boundaries were in a state of flux. The fourth and final chapter of this thesis, ‘Land’, explores the shifting aesthetic landscape of the period and, with an emphasis on mode and genre, demonstrates Ramsay’s and Thomson’s original contribution to an emerging British poetic, elucidated by an extended analysis of their poetry of place.

Moloney, Donal. "Slippages between the picture plane and the painting surface : an analysis, through my paintings, of specular highlights, proximal spaces and the Lacanian gaze." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2015. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/12069/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this practice-based research project is to examine how specular highlights and proximal spaces, when perceived through the Lacanian gaze, might confound our perception of Cartesian perspectivalism in representational painting. I will analyse and question such a combination of specific visual characteristics identified within three of my paintings and related theories of looking. Specifically, these include Hal Foster’s (1996: 138) reading of the ways in which the Lacanian ‘gaze’ disrupts Cartesian perspectivalism, Norman Bryson’s (1990: 71, 79) writing on the reversal of the ‘Albertian gaze’ and Arthur Faisman and Michael S. Langer’s (2013: 1) definition of ‘specular highlights’. By analysing and mapping theoretical concerns that come from close readings of three of my paintings I will investigate whether or not our perception of Cartesian perspectivalism can be somewhat confounded by these specific visual characteristics. I will also discuss how overloading the viewer with an excessive use of specular highlights could disrupt any underlying narratives within the paintings. This will be done by subsequently re-examining these theoretical concerns back through my painting practice, forming what Dean and Smith (2009: 19) have termed an ‘Iterative Cyclic Web’. My hypothesis is that these three paintings may be nexus for a particular oscillation between different ways of looking contained within the paintings I will discuss: looking through the surface, looking across the surface and a form of being looked at from inside the surface. This thesis will be underpinned by two interconnected elements. Firstly, there will be an exhibition of selected paintings I have made, together with painting experiments and supporting material. Secondly, chapters in this text will outline the theoretical analysis of my painting practice and the subsequent studio-based analysis of questions derived from the theoretical analysis. This thesis as a whole will closely follow a practice-based research methodology drawn from Katie MacLeod’s (2000: online) writing on ‘revealing a practice’. I will move back and forth between practice and writing as a method for analysing and developing a multifaceted response to my research question.

The patent of lebon, dated 1799, introduces in france the first gaslighting. Promoters of this technology were more speculators than technicians. Only six companies lasted in paris after few years. Then, process of production and distribution were imported. Empiricism of these first years was responsible for many accidents yet, during the 1830's, appeared a network. Its growth has resulted from two markets: - first, an ostentatious lighting to increase the value of shops and pubblic rooms. - in the second place, to serve as substitute for oil-lamps into public illuminations. General statutes were adopted in the middle of the ninettenth century, after several incomplete laws. During the second empire, one company replaced the six first. It was a monopoly which has common interest with pereire. The "compagnie parisienne du gaz" increased uses of gaz with a connected network, a most important market with an increasing number of consumers and a dynamic policy of sales. It provided progress in everyday life and developed confort and luxury. Besides, it has associated the rise of production with a permanent research to find innovations

After rendering military services by years in India and in The War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1714), the Lusitanian João da Maia da Gama was awarded with the charge of captain-major and governor of Paraiba in 1708. Coming into port at the captainship in a critical period of Brazilian colonial history, João da Maia took part actively in the colonial administration, outlining plans and strategies in the military, economic and political fields, including an involvement in The Mascate War in Pernambuco. Utilizing as main sources the documentation of the Overseas Historical Archive (OHA) and the Historical Documents from the National Library (HDNL), the present dissertation intends to analyse from the political culture standpoint of the Ancient Regime, the performance and the practices by João da Maia da Gama in the exercise of their governmental functions, observing their juridic boundaries and the possibility of autonomy in face to the metropolitan guidelines. Furthermore, it aims at investigating his involvement in commercial activities and observing how his intervention in Pernambuco’s conflict was put into effect – the most remembered action by historiography -, seeking to perceive the plausible political motivations and strategies involved in the governor’s action.

Morales, Hernandez Mauricio. Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017EHES0041.

Full text
Abstract:
We begin by observing the importance of the image in the anthropogenesis’ process because the fixed image reveals temporal mediation, namely, the creation of reported time, mediatizing our relation to the real and thus, transgressing our fields of the perceptual. On this basis, the image’s history appears as a development of various static eidetic models that are going to be in a negotiation and permanent relationship with dynamic eidetic models: language, gestures, equipment, music, dance, the habitat; models that, in return, are mediations enabling us to invest the space and divide it up. The intermingling of the dynamic and static models would constitute the character defining man as a political animal, in the myriad and diversity of the elements that are components for each culture. That is how we are able to detect an ontological difference at the time when the photographic trace appears, a trace not resulting from a formal, symbolic idealization but from an idealization of distance, from which the screen materializes by articulating the eye from a new operative scale. The image’s essential contribution would thus have entered a new phase that would have transformed man into a media animal after almost two centuries. That is where the history of the new trace becomes the core of all political issues in its most consistent manifestation, under the surge of digital technology, that of cinematographic expression. In doing so, we have addressed and favoured one of cinema’s histories at a time when there was a development of specific issues in relation to the real, notably using the work of a Mexican filmmaker, Téo Hernández, mainly done in Europe between 1968 and 1992 as an example. Its powerful phenomenological dimensions — the importance of the body while filming — and also the deep reflexion on the medium and its relation to the real, have provided us with a keystone that enables us to understand the major changes in media that happened during the 1980s and determined the political outlook of the world today

Abstract:
AIMS: We develop a new theoretical framework to generate Besançon Galaxy Model Fast Approximate Simulations (BGM FASt) to address fundamental questions of the Galactic structure and evolution performing multi-parameter inference. The flexibility of BGM FASt allows the inference of fundamental parameters related to the stellar initial mass function (IMF), the star formation history (SFH), the density distribution, the kinematics and the chemo-dynamics, among others. BGM FASt allows the study of different Milky Way (MW) components. In this thesis we are focused in a first application of our strategy to simultaneously infer the IMF and the SFH of the MW disc. METHOD: BGM FASt is based on a reweighing scheme, that uses a specific pre-sampled simulation. We use BGM FASt together with an approximate Bayesian computation algorithm to obtain the posterior probability distribution function of the inferred parameters, by automatically comparing synthetic versus observed data. Our full strategy is codified to run on Apache Spark and Hadoop, suited to deal with large surveys. BGM FASt is implemented in the big data infrastructure known as Gaia Data Analytics Framework (GDAF) at the University of Barcelona. To evaluate the performance of BGM FASt we execute a set of validation tests comparing density, colour, mass and age distributions of BGM FASt versus BGM standard simulations. We present two scientific cases that compare synthetic versus Tycho-2 colour-magnitude diagrams. We obtain for the first time using BGM an IMF and SFH of the thin disc by exploring a 6-Dimensional parameter space. We use Gaia data-release 2 magnitudes, colours, and parallaxes for stars with G<12 to explore a parameter space with 15 dimensions. This includes simultaneously the IMF and, for the first time, a non-parametric SFH for the Galactic disc. RESULTS: The set of tests applied show a very good agreement between equivalent simulations performed with BGM FASt and standard BGM. It has resulted to be 10000 times faster. We demonstrate it is a very valuable tool to perform multi-parameter inference using large catalogues. The two scientific demonstration cases of our strategy applied to Tyhco-2 data gives us, for the first time using BGM, a full 6D posterior probability distribution function of the parameters involved in the IMF and the SFH of the thin disc component. Using Gaia DR2 we find an imprint of a star formation burst 2-3 Gyr ago in the Galactic thin disc domain. Our results show a decreasing trend followed by a Star Formation Rate (SFR) enhancement starting at about 5 Gyr ago and continuing until about 1 Gyr ago. This enhancement is detected with high statistical significance by discarding the null hypothesis of an exponential SFH. The timescale and the amount of stellar mass generated during this SFR enhancement event lead us to hypothesise that its origin, currently under investigation, is not intrinsic to the disc. When we adopt a non-parametric SFH the resulting IMF for the thin disc has an alpha3 of approximately 2 for masses M larger than 1.53 Msun and alpha2 approximately 1.3 for the mass range between 0.5 and 1.53Msun. CONCLUSIONS: BGM FASt has allowed us to increase our knowledge about the IMF and the SFH of the MW disc. Our results have shown that the evolution of the SFR with time is much more complex than a simple mathematical exponential decreasing shape. We have seen how the imposition of a mathematical shape for the SFH has a clear impact into the derivation of the IMF at high masses. The good performance of our whole strategy opens very promising perspectives, among them, the possibility to study whether the IMF variates with the time or not.

Abstract:
Despite the many current conflicts in the Middle East and the world, the Israeli- Palestinian conflict is still one of the most significant conflicts of the modern era. The reasons for this include the history and violence of this conflict and the lack of practical solutions for it. The significance of this conflict is reflected in its prevalence in many disciplines, such as political science and media studies. Related literature shows that Australian media coverage of this conflict has not been investigated thoroughly. Hence, this study attempts to bridge this gap in literature, aiming to identify how Australian media portray the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A sample of mainstream Australian print and online media was analysed. The sample included News Corp media (The Australian, the Herald Sun and news.com.au), Fairfax newspapers (The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald) and two news websites, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Crikey. This study draws on Entman’s (1993, 2002) concept of framing as a crucial technique used to shape an event or issue, reflecting the power embedded in media texts. The Australian media corpora (consisting of 862,093 words) were created by uploading 1,201 news articles to online linguistic tool, Sketch Engine. These news articles, published in the sample of Australian media from January 2014 to June 2015, were examined using corpus-based analysis. By using critical discourse analysis (CDA), a small sample of the data was analysed to investigate the Australian media portrayal of the Israeli war on Gaza during July and August 2014. The study shows that conflict and responsibility frames were more prominent than other frames, such as human interest and victim frames. This is due to the Australian media’s reliance on officials’ voices. These media relied on Israeli voices over Palestinian voices, and United States (US) voices over Australian voices. Consequently, by avoiding words such as occupation, resistance, victim and massacre, Australian media representations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict reflect power of voices within media discourses. The Australian media tended to legitimise Israeli attacks on Gaza and to delegitimise Hamas’s rocket attacks on Israel. This emerged through highlighting Israel’s right of defence, representing Israeli attacks on Gaza as a retaliation to Palestinian rockets, and foregrounding Palestinians and suppressing or backgrounding Israel as actors. The justification of Israeli actions resulted from media reliance on Israeli and pro-Israeli sources and voices. This justification was also relevant to acknowledging Israel as a state, Palestinians as stateless people and Hamas as a terrorist organisation and a nonstate actor. This study found that both Israeli and Palestinian casualties were represented in terms of numbers or statistics, and occasionally individualised. The human interest frame was only used to portray casualties when particular voices were used. Hence, this study demonstrates the need for more in-depth and humanistic coverage and contextual information about the conflict in Australian media.

Abstract:
This dissertation joins the history of science and medicine with environmental history to explore the language of health in environmental politics. Today, in government policy briefs and mission statements of environmental non-profits, newspaper editorials and activist journals, claims about the health of the planet and its human and non-human inhabitants abound. Yet despite this rhetorical ubiquity, modern environmental politics are ideologically and organizationally fractured along the themes of whose health is at stake and how that health should be protected. This dissertation traces how these competing conceptions of health came to structure the landscape of American environmental politics. Beginning in the early 1950s, an expanding network of environmental activists began to think in terms of protecting the health of the planet and its inhabitants from the unprecedented hazards of nuclear energy and chemical proliferation. They did this by appropriating models and metaphors of health developed by postwar ecologists, philosophers, epidemiologists and nuclear physicians. Through this process of appropriation, scientists and philosophers were likewise drawn into environmental activism. Through five case studies, this dissertation traces the collaborations between scientists, environmental activists, philosophers, and medical doctors which enabled a broad range of articulations of health: the health of the wild, the health of the environment, the health of the planet, and the health of humans within the environment. Each case study attends to the intersection of political thought and practice, and explores how science and environmental activism were in constant dialogue in the postwar period. Drawing on archival materials and extensive oral history interviews, this dissertation demonstrates the centrality of health to American environmental politics from the end of World War Two until the present day.

Abstract:
The mirror lied. Despite appearances, despite a several centuries-old presence of this object in painting and literature, and sometimes even in the analysis of some books, the mirror constitutes a recent tool and framework in terms of its diffusion. On the eve of the French Revolution, it remained a "new" object for the majority of the French population. While its democratization began in the 18th century, it took on its full force and scope in the following century. This research aims above all at exploring the ins and outs of this historical movement, which is anything but linear. It is organized around three axes. First, the question of the presence of the mirror in 18th century interiors is studed, through its very materiality, its industry and the immense disparity of existing qualities, as well as in the cultural (religious, moral, social and political) representations associated with the object. From speeches pronounced on the stages of theatres, with or more frequently without, the presence of the object, to mock it or play with the ignorance of reflections, to speeches and debates of the revolutionary period accompanying and legitimizing the destruction of noble mirrors, before the pragmatism and financial needs of the Republic and the Empire imposed strict regulations on the sale of seized mirror, the 18th century was not lacking in considerations on mirrors. The second axis of this research focuses on the 19th century that corresponds to an explosion in the production and consumption of mirrors, accompanied and assisted by a sharp drop in prices, small mirrors and even more "large mirrors". The industrial "wars" between the former royal mirror manufacturer, Saint-Gobain, and its rival Saint-Quirin (before a cartel agreement), and those against popular small and medium-sized mirrors from Bavaria, formed the breeding ground for the first signs of "mass consumption". The fall in prices is not the only reason. The notion of luxury associated with self-reflection and the attention that can be paid to it is also attacked in its "superfluous" dimension when public spaces, novels, theatre, and a textual or visual advertisement come to say and play around this "importance" and "necessity" of reflections. Distinction, social ascension, mastery of codes and of body attitudes, attentive and sharpened eyes are experienced and learned by an increasing number of individuals, if not always full-fledged "citizens" in the various political regimes that followed one another during the 19th century. However, a society that is frequently restless in its social and political foundations sees old disparities remain and new ones apperar in response to a greater standardization of appearances. Many strategies are developed by either old or recently "arrived" elites. And through different types of mirrors, from the small "low-range" greenish model to the large and luminous swing-mirror, a whole social world unfolds in and through the reflections. And since the 1850s, mirror-wardrobes have "seen" a growing middle class. The last part of this research is very largely devoted to the "specular and spectacular orgy" that flourishes on the stages of theatres and concert halls. A wide variety of games around the mirrors are set up, in dialogues as well as in scenographies using framed mirrors and trickery in order to develop, in particular, a certain meta-theatricality, even a "pre-cinematography". The artistic hybridizations and influences on literature of these "eye feasts" are sketched out, as well as avenues for future research

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine the censorship that the social media platform Instagram exerts over pictures of female nudes, and whether the body type of the women depicted is a factor in how the censorship is carried through. This is executed by making a comparative picture analysis of eight nude photos published on Instagram, four of which are allowed on the platform and four which are not, and have therefore been deleted. The bodies are analysed, and aspects of how they are depicted which are related to the Instagram Community Guidelines, and furthermore if the body depicted conforms to the norms of our contemporary beauty standards and “the Male Gaze”, are reviewed. This fundamental part of the study isbased on the formal analysis and the methods of semiotics. Furthermore, the history of the nude in art, the body norms and ideals of our contemporary society, the Instagram Community rules and Guidelines and the artists are presented briefly. The discussion which has been carried through is based on the analysis and thesis of how female nudes of the Western art cannon have been received, judged, divided into categories and censored to answer the central inquires of the essay. In conclusion, this essay finds how pictures of nude women on Instagram are received, judged, and censored differently depending on whether they fit into the norms of beauty and conform to the male gaze. Hence, the rules of Instagram are found to have been followed through with double standard and bias.

The thesis is based on the increasing importance of pictures in the 20th century. Pictures may be understood as (1) gaze stimulating and as (2) appearances charged with communicative potentiality. The use that the media make of the gaze is extremely conspicuous. Even in their ambiguity, pictures are veritable publicity instruments in a century during which news and information became gradually commercial goods in the hands of great communication groups. Our research sources are covers of best selling Brazilian magazines. Since the information market is intimately linked to politics and the analyzed period ranges from the late 60s (the starting point of press censorship by the government) to the late 80s (the first true election for the presidency of Brazil after censorship), it is important to problematize the communication theme as Brazil alternated from censorship and dictatorship to democracy. Magazine covers are performance signs of the big press and, at the same time, of the gaze structuring itself throughout the century: the gaze that seeks precise and fast information. Common strategies in magazine covers, uses of color, body expression codes, underlined themes which show the constitution of meanings suggested to the great amount of photos by the same communication media, are analyzed. Picture-composed synthesis establishes discussions, giving great importance to pictures since they exercise an excluding stance. Magazine covers allure the magazines' target public, or consumers. Beneath the magazines' syntheses lie... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below)
