Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper surveys the rhetorical works of the so-called School of Gaza of the late fifth and early sixth centuries in light of the recent wave of scholarship on the School. It focuses on themes, rhetorical genres, and structural features. The Gazan repertoire includes “real life” orations, declamations, dialexeis, progymnasmatic pieces, and oratorical paratexts such as preliminary dialexeis and protheōriai. The paper seeks to provide a map to this important but neglected body of texts, synthesizing recent scholarship and adding some of the author’s own observations along the way.

Abd Rabou, Abdel Fattah. "Notes on the Non-flying Mammalian Fauna Characterizing both Sides of the Green Line; the De Facto Border between the Gaza Strip and Historic Palestine." Israa University Journal for Applied Science 6, no. 1 (October 1, 2022): 191–227. http://dx.doi.org/10.52865/xcni7857.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of its small area, Palestine (27,000 km2) is home to diverse forms of flying and non-flying mammalian fauna. The 365 km2 Gaza Strip (about 1.5% of historic Palestine), which is located in the far southwest of Palestine, represents a strip isolated from the rest of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948 by the so-called Green Line. The Green Line is currently supported by the so-called smart security wall, which would impede the ecological communication between the Gaza Strip and the rest of the lands of historic Palestine. This study aims to identify the non-flying mammalian fauna existing on both sides of the Green Line through field visits, interviews with border residents, zoo owners and wildlife hunters, and photographing hunted species. The results revealed at least 21 species of non-flying mammals belonging to 14 families and 5 orders marked both sides of the Green line. This number may change in the future depending on the development of scientific studies or the occurrence of any geopolitical and military changes in the region. Order Carnivora was the biggest and represented 42.9% of the species recorded, followed by the orders Rodentia (23.9%), Artiodactyla (14.3%), Eulipotyphla or Insectivora (14.3%) and Lagomorpha (4.7%). Most of the recorded mammals were located on both sides of the Green Line, with the exception of the Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena) and Wild Boar (Sus scrofa), which have not yet been able to infiltrate and cross the Gaza Strip borders. A decade ago, the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) began breeding in separate parts of the Gaza Strip. The Etruscan Pygmy Shrew (Suncus etruscus) is, by far, the smallest non-flying mammal recorded in the Gaza Strip. All recorded mammals were subjected to poaching and hunting by wildlife hunters, and some species were deposited in private zoos that are spread in the Gaza Strip. It appears that the Negev Desert in southern Palestine and the Gaza Envelope which border the Gaza Strip to the East and North, represent an important depth for the influx of many wild mammals to the Gaza Strip across the Green Line. In conclusion, the study recommends the necessity of controlling the poaching and hunting of various forms of wildlife, whether they are present in the Gaza Strip or coming to it across the Green Line in order to preserve Palestinian biodiversity in a sustainable manner.

Abstract:
This essay explores the challenges and opportunities that the Covid-19 pandemic has afforded Israel as it broadens its settler-colonial objectives internally, in Gaza, and elsewhere. In particular, it sheds light on the heightened militaristic and economic approaches taken by Israel to further entrench its siege of Palestinians in Gaza and to export increasingly advanced technologies of surveillance and state control long deployed against the Palestinian people. This investigation thus offers an opportunity to probe settler colonialism's strategic opportunism in the face of the historic pandemic.

Abstract:
This article re-evaluates Paul Wittek's famous gaza thesis, which until the 1980s was the dominant explanation of the Ottoman state and remains influential. It situates Wittek within the intellectual genealogy of Ottoman Studies, which exhibits two major lines: the Ottomans were either barbarians without an understanding of state-building, or fanatical Muslims who were engaged in continuous holy war. Since Wittek, many scholars have believed that holy war was central to the Ottoman state and ideology. Wittek wrongly interpreted the concept gaza as equivalent to the western term ‘holy war’, seeing the terms gaza, jihad, and holy war as synonyms. In fact each of these concepts has a different semantic and historical context. Although the gaza ideology was relevant to Ottoman expansion and dynastic legitimacy, it was not the all-defining ideological motif.

Full text
Abstract:
This article evaluates collective petitions (arz-ı mahzars) sent to Istanbul from Gaza at the end of the nineteenth century as a way of assessing the political mood of the elite in Ottoman provincial towns. Gaza was the theatre of considerable tension, cleavages, and rivalry among its elite. One of the key questions in this context is the implications of sending collective petitions from towns such as Gaza to the imperial centre given the political censorship and the absence of free press at a time when there was nonetheless greater communication between the centre and the provinces, and an altered relationship between the state and its subjects. Thus more than ever before collective petitions represented local political alignments and what could be very cautiously defined as ‘public opinion’ among the elite in provincial Ottoman towns such as Gaza.

Davidson, James. "The Gaze in Polybius' Histories." Journal of Roman Studies 81 (November 1991): 10–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/300485.

Full text
Abstract:
Summarizing Polybius' contribution to the study of Roman history, Mommsen paid him the following compliment: ‘His books are like the sun in the field of Roman history; where they begin, the misty veils which still cloak the Samnite and Pyrrhic wars are lifted, where they finish, a new and if possible still more vexatious twilight begins.’ Since Mommsen our understanding of Polybius' methods, his bias and omissions, his ideology and concerns, has progressed immeasurably, thanks largely to the work of Pédech and Walbank. Nevertheless, the idea that the Histories represent, at least in their conception, the illumination of an intrinsic reality persists. Polybius' supposed ‘poor style’ is often treated as in some way an absence of historiographical mediation. In this case, ‘transparency’ in a text, the sensation that it provides unmediated access to what it describes, is achieved not by a smooth and inconspicuous style, but by coarseness. Tarn compared Polybius' work to rescripts and despatches, as if he were only interested in an unobtrusive recording role, and this attitude to the historian, far from being in decline, has received some radical and authoritative support in recent years. One reappraisal of Roman imperialism has argued that Polybius was much closer to the reality of the process than many twentieth-century historians. Another study claims to ‘want to say no more than what Polybius said’. Ultimately, I have no argument with those who stress Polybius' honesty and reliability. More problematic, however, is an attitude to our use of Polybius' history which is often assumed in eulogies of his truthfulness: that when we read Polybius, we are enabled to gaze directly on the landscape of Roman history, a single substantial unitary reality, structured out of objective facts.
