Abstract:
This project addresses the contemporary and competing non-state governmentalities in the Gaza Strip through an analysis of the 1948-1967 period. During this period the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) constructed early notions of non-state 'governance' and quasi-citizenship in Gaza. The majority of this research focuses on these organizations in the 1948-1967 period, however, there is a case study that addresses the way in which these competing models of non-sovereign administration impacted the approaches used since 2007 by Hamas. The distinct histories and experiences of administration under each organization has created competing notions of what components constitute an assembled notion of citizenship in Gaza. Specifically, the bureaucratic categorization preferred by UNRWA conflicts with Hamas' focus on individualized service based on the tradition of shura (consultation) and youth training, in particular. Several approaches to governance in Gaza are common to the three major faith-based organizations discussed here (the AFSC, the YMCA, and the Hamas). Notably, these organizations create sacred spaces and processes as a mechanism of governance, allowing them to exert control over the population. In particular, the manner in which two distinct international organizations – UNRWA and Hamas – came to operate parallel state structures in the Gaza Strip, and the way that these two organizations imbue citizenship like rights and responsibilities on the populations that they serve is of particular interest. In this way governance in the Gaza Strip has completed a circuit: from the faith-based Friends to the faith-based Hamas, with UNRWA as the constant secular parallel authority. Through an examination of organizational archives, memoirs, and interviews this project links these events, arguing that the institutional records of these organizations provide an illuminating path to better understand the situation of governance in Gaza today.

Shaat, Ashraf. "La gestion juridique du port de Gaza." Aix-Marseille 3, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005AIX32059.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gaza seaport is one of the Palestinian strategic projects at all levels including political, economical and social. The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) aims to provide an independent access to the outside world, especially the PNA is subservient totally to Israel, in regard of import and export. The construction of the Seaport has been initiated to strengthen the Palestinian economy and increase the rate of employment Palestine. In order to revive the demotic economy, mainly the private sector. The movement of goods would overcome the Israeli severe restrictions. Moreover this would give confidence to the private sector in the field of development, open the doors for investment in various industries and create new job opportunities. As the choice of the owner is the suitable choice, PNA decided to adopt this choice to manage the Seaport. Through its management the PNA transfers the Seaport operations to private companies. Therefore, the owner’s choice allows to carry out specific operations on the Seaport so as the law and regulations which organize the Seaport operations will be subdued to the PNA control. This pattern saves the appropriate climates for competence among the private companies in various activities which are carried out in the Seaport as shipping works and equipment ownership. Moreover, the pattern will facilitate the outflow of the private investments and foreign capitals to the area. Owing to long –term contracts the private companies are contracted regarding the infrastructure ( land area). On the other hand, the private ship companies save and maintain its buildings as offices, storehouses, containers-shipping stations and workshops…. Etc. They will also fix their equipment as cranes, shipping equipments, contact strips and others on the arrival station after the concerned company performs its main activities. The private companies bear the responsibility of employing and recruiting work power, while other companies will be responsible of the entire activities relevant to sea boats and shipping , besides depositing the goods in storehouses, anchoring and sailing of boats, dragging fees and shipping agencies …etc. The construction of a maritime port in Gaza, planned by the 1993-1994 Oslo agreements - constitutes theunique strategic option in order to integrate the palestinaian goods trade to the region and the other countries. This port enables the improvement of exportation competition and to increase the commercial flow continuously. But the continuation of the conflict and the political instability provoked successions of delay in its construction, that is why in this research, we will proceed to the question legal direction of the Gaza future port. This research regroupes the fundamental datas for the palestinian port direction. It analyses the different port regimes basis in the world, economically, financially and legally, it compares the types of direction, exposes in details the choice of the port authority, its inner organization system, its price future structure and finally the finance mode

Abstract:
Dans le Rhetor (op. XLII F./R.)
In the Rhetor (op. XLII F./R.) Choricius of Gaza imagines that a rhetor of a city under siege, with his oratorical skills, is able to convince the enemy to raise the siege, avoiding in this way a long and violent war to his fellow citizens. He demands from the city the prize which it is up to “the one who successfully put through a war”. A soldier opposes “because the law dispenses prizes to the winner with weapons, not to those who convinces with words”. The declamation is a tribute to the evocative and persuasive power of the logos. It marks the triumph of the power of reason upon the reason of force. The thesis proposes: an introduction about Choricius, his work and the recurrent themes of his declamations (also in order to the theme of gheras in the rhetorical tradition and declamatory) and its frame of reference; the translation of declamation; the linguistic and stylistic commentary and, at the same time, historical and literary commentary. This commentary is to clarify the author's text and the influence on Choricius of tradition and his originality in relation to this tradition. The thesis contextualizes the Choricius' work in the Gaza on the fifth and sixth century A.D. and the role of the Gaza School in the transition from the classical tradition to Christianity. The analysis and commentary of Rhetor focuses mainly on analysis of “loci communes”; structure of declamation; dialexeis; dialexis 24 and its location "problematic" in Choriciu’s corpus

Abstract:

Abstract:
Combining historical, socio-anthropological and artistic approaches, the thesis aims to shed new light on the contemporary situation of Palestine and the modes of Occupation, through the analysis of its worlds of contemporary art since the 1990s which have seen an unprecedented development of its infrastructure. In a context of growing political and territorial fragmentation, a new generation of artists has emerged which gradually succeeds in transgressing the constraints at work on the ground, to access through their artistic practices and the resulting worldviews, to the scenes of international contemporary art.Through a multilocated ethnographic study, the thesis aims to retrace the fabrication of this contemporary art, focusing on the study of plastic artists from the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It is a question of observing their daily practices, the factors that hinder them as well as the new windows of opportunities and circulations induced by the globalized art market. Starting from the individual paths of these moving creators, the research questions the forms of rupture or continuities engendered by globalization whether in their modes of engagement (artistic and political) or in their relationship towards nationalism, in order to rethink the relationship between art and politics

Abstract:
The research project attempts to elucidate certain key issues in the understanding of process affecting urban planning of the city of Gaza and that have shaped its image since the days of the British Mandate rule until today, 2011, in the light ofthe particular political and geographic situation that condition life in the occupied Palestinian territories.Gaza city is the economic and administrative centre of the Gaza Strip. Its present urban situation has as its basis the five different administrations that have influenced the city through different strategies. We have not been so ambitious asto deal with the Ottoman Empire, as it would have needed a full research on its own. A diachronic approach would not have been useful for the analysis of the city. Its urban fabric, in particular in the old core is « organic » with no regular gridpattern and many dead-end streets that are the result of progressive haphazard parcelling. In many of its blocks the old fabric and the modern are superimposed with intense land-use density. The word block is used in the cadastral sense andnot in its morphological meaning: for this reasons it is always written in italics. The text analyses the transformation of the city through its building permits, presenting as contextual support the historical growth of the city from the end of the Ottoman rule to the transition to the British Mandate, to the creation of the Gaza Strip that has conditioned the next 60 years of planning in the city. The data utilised for the research stops at the end of 2011 although there are echoes of 2012 events, since the researcher is often in Gaza and is permeated by the reality of the city. The study is the product of a movement between qualitative data from the interviews, the empirical data of the building permits, maps and photographic documentation

Abstract:
Background: Occupational stress in nursing is common worldwide; with rates of 9.20%-68.0% of nurses suffering from stress being reported in the worldwide literature. This thesis reports an investigation into stress among hospital nurses in Gaza Strip-Palestine. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of occupational stress among hospital nurses in Gaza-Palestine and explore possible causal occupational stressors. Method: A quantitative survey design was employed, with a self-administered questionnaire pack being the data collection technique. Data were collected on psychological distress (GHQ-12), depression (SLC-D), sources of stress (NSS), trauma (IES-R) and demographic variables. Open questions were used to enable participants to describe their experiences of stressful events and enable the researcher to collect more in-depth information regarding some aspects of the stress domains. Data were analysed by SPSS using a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical methods: T-test, one way ANOVA and logistic regression were employed.Sample: The study population is the entire cohort of nurses who were working in the 16 hospitals in Gaza (1801 nurses; 985 males) during the period August 2009 through March 2010. Because of difficulties in access, only 1500 were able to receive questionnaire packs and 1133 were completed and returned (response rate=75.53%). Results: The results of this study revealed a high prevalence of psychological distress (63%, GHQ-12 cut-off=6), depression (59.7%, SCL-D cut-off=1.5) and trauma (69.4%, IES-R cut-off=35). The most severe occupational stressors were: ‘Not enough staff to adequately cover the unit’, ‘Lack of drugs and equipments required for nursing care’ and ‘Unpredictable staffing and scheduling’ respectively. The most frequent occupational stressors were: ‘Not enough staff to adequately cover the unit’, ‘Watching a patient suffer’ and ‘Lack of drugs and equipments required for nursing care’ respectively. As subscales, ‘Workload’ and ‘Death and dying’ were the most frequent and severe occupational stressors.Psychological distress was significantly associated with gender, age, experience, night shifts and extra-work. Depression was significantly associated with gender, hospital type, age, night shifts, experience and marital status. Severity of occupational stressors was significantly associated with age, night shifts, specialisation and qualifications. Frequency of occupational stressors was significantly associated with hospital type, experience specialisation and night shifts. Finally, trauma was significantly associated with hospital type, experience and night shifts. The predictors of psychological distress caseness (GHQ-12) were: depression caseness, uncertainty about treatment (severity), experience and qualifications of nurses. Protective factors were: extra work and experience of more than 15 years. Conclusion: Being a nurse in Gaza hospitals appears to be a stressful experience. More attention should be focused to develop an effective programme to reduce stress levels among Palestinian nurses in Gaza.

SELMI, AMAL. "Groundwater management and modelling of the Gaza Strip." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/40833.

Full text
Abstract:
Groundwater resource is critical to the future of the Gaza Strip, as it is the only water resource available to satisfy the daily water needs. As future population growth will place increased stress upon water supplies, the need for effective water management is greater than ever. To plan for the sustainable use of groundwater resources in Gaza Strip, an understanding of the natural hydrologic system and quantitative of the natural hydrologic budget, are required. This thesis addresses the problems facing the groundwater management in Gaza Strip, through development of a 3D groundwater flow model and the natural hydrologic budget of the Gaza aquifer. By applying the groundwater model to future scenarios, the impacts of variable pumping and recharge on the groundwater level in order to control sea water intrusion has been quantified and assessed. Based on the results, recommendations are made regarding optimal solutions to control sea water intrusion in the Gaza aquifer. In order to study the aquifer behavior and the depth and extent of groundwater decline, the historical changes in groundwater levels were analyzed for the 1935 and 2009 period. For this, the kriging interpolation method was used to estimate the groundwater level based on available well data collected for the entire study area. Results show that groundwater levelsdropped by as much as 18 meters between 1935 and 2009. This drop is very important in the north and south due to over exploitation of groundwater. Chemical analyses were carried out to study the salinization process and to identify the salinity sources in the Gaza aquifer. Results show that the groundwater in Gaza aquifer is characterized by Na-Cl-SO4 and Ca-Mg-HCO3 facies. The occurrence of salinity in different parts of the aquifer is related to the presence of the seawater in the western side, and lateral inflow from the eastern border due to the hydraulic connection with brackish aquifer. This thesis discusses the vulnerability of Gaza aquifer to sea water intrusion by applying the GALDIT index method. Different thematic maps were prepared for seawater intrusion indicators and overlaid to develop the vulnerability map. The vulnerability map can be used as an additional tool to determine areas of potential saltwater intrusion and to identify the favorable zones to artificial recharge in the management model presented in this thesis. For the realization of the 3D numerical flow model, the MODFLOW code (finite difference method) was selected. The used graphical interface is GMS 6.0 (Groundwater Modeling System). The groundwater flow model was developed in order to understand and simulate the aquifer behavior and to control sea water intrusion. A careful calibration of the model was performed, in which the simulated piezometric levels are compared with field measurements to determine the validity and reliability of the model. Based on the developed transient model, 3 management scenarios were applied in order to study the impact of pumping rates and additional water resources on the groundwater level for the next 20 years. These scenarios are conceived to support coastal aquifer management plan adopted by Palestinian Water Authority for the control of the sea water intrusion. The results of the first management scenario show that the ground water level is strongly influenced by the over pumping. Two large depression zones are observed in the northern and southern Gaza Strip. Results of the second management scenario show an increasing ground water level, by several meters above mean sea level, under the effect of decreasing abstraction rates. Results of the third management scenario show an increasing groundwater level, by several meters above mean sea level, under the effect of increasing the aquifer recharge. Using treated waste water to remediate the groundwater level and control the sea water intrusion in the Gaza aquifer appears as the most practical and suitable solution for saltwater intrusion control, since the other solutions require the use of fresh water resources, which are costly and unpractical in view of the Gaza Strip situation. Therefore, using treated wastewater represents an additional renewable and reliable water source for the management of water resources in the Gaza Strip.

Abstract:

Abstract:
How to explain the social resilience evidenced by Gazans notwithstanding the challenges imposed by what began as a partial blockade in the year 2000 to become a practically unmitigated situation since the year 2006? Having shared the daily life of Gaza for over ten years, a researcher in sociology and anthropology tries to answer the question. This thesis is the result of the analysis of in-depth interviews of a population of circa 120 individuals , men and women, coupled by immersion in the daily life and availing herself of numerous and diverse reports and studies on the condition of life in Gaza. The researcher concludes that one has to probe for the origin of this resilience in the resources that constitute for the Gazans the solidity of their social institutions and the reference to a shared history.Beyond the Gaza case, this work is a contribution to an analysis of what may allow societies and individuals that conform them to overcome crisis

Abu, Hamad Bassam. "Determinants of job satisfaction and motivation among Gaza nurses." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2001. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20612/.

Abstract:
Job satisfaction and motivation continues to be of great significance in the recruitment, commitment, retention, productivity and mental health of nurses, particularly, in collectivist communities like the Palestinian one. Therefore, the overall aims of this study are to ascertain the degree of job satisfaction and motivation among Gaza nurses, to identify main factors affecting these and how these relate to other research in this area, most of which has been carried out in rather different western cultures. The study is quantitative/qualitative, cross-sectional, methodologically triangulated, and was conducted between 1997-2000. A sum of 420 nurses chosen through a Probability Systematic Random Sample were requested to complete self-administered questionnaires and 44 purposively selected nurses were interviewed in 4 focus group sessions with a response rate of 89%.The analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data extracted seven domains that reflected Gaza nurses' expectations by reference to their job satisfaction. These are management culture, interaction and communication, professional development, professional status and self-esteem, working life, work benefits and conditions and professional autonomy. Thus, Gaza nurses perceived motivators support the Process Theories of motivation and question the Content and Scientific Theories. The study revealed that Gaza nurses were moderately satisfied (50-60%) in general, but their satisfaction could be further improved. Management dominates the general picture of Gaza nurses' motivation and most of the factors related to it. The study clarified the general picture of Gaza nurses by demonstrating their personal and organisational characteristics and provided some insights into the relationships between these variables and motivation. The identified seven factors could be seen as constituting a model-frame for subjects' motivation. The study's findings contribute in enabling those concerned with this issue, particularly nurse managers in Palestine, to understand what motivates their nurses and to develop more effective motivational strategies.

Abstract:
The Life of Porphyry of Gaza (BHG³ 1570) is a hagiographical text of the protobyzantine period written by Mark the Deacon. He introduces himself as the saint’s loyal disciple, who narrates his master’s life after his death in 420. However, due to the plagiarism of Theodoret of Cyrrhus’s Philotheos History, the current form of the Vita dates certainly later than 444 and cannot have been written by Mark, who is just the narrator. According to the hypothesis of the editors Grégoire and Kugener, the current form of the Vita is the result of the revision of an older text. The text provides us with a unique account of the history of paganism and christianism in Gaza at the end of the 4th and the beginnings of the 5th century. Appointed bishop of Gaza in 395, Porphyry contributes actively to the christianisation of the city, which was largely pagan. The peak of his activity is the demolition of the Marneion and the erection of the “Great Church” of Gaza on the site of the former temple. However, in addition to the problems concerning its authorship and its datation, the Vita was found in the centre of a great debate concerning its historical value since the time of Tillemont. In the frame of our PhD thesis, we undertook a new critical edition, accompanied by a french translation. The brief literary study of the text is followed by a historical commentary guided by the problem of the Vita’s authenticity. The critical edition is preceded by an examination of the direct and the indirect text tradition. Finally, the notes of the translation aim to reveal its documentary value

In the two orations publics Choricius praises the bishop Marcianus who favored the construction of two churches in Gaza. He describes the St. Sergius church in the first speech, and the St.Stephen one in the second speech. When the churches were inaugurated, there were festivals that are equally described by the rhetorician. In the introduction of our thesis are analyzed Choricius’s biography, his literary production et his fame during the following centuries. The thesis includes also a review of the economic and cultural background in Gaza at Choricius’s times. In the second part of our work are translated italian the two speechs and the texts that precede them (dialexeis). At last is added a philologycal, literary and stylistic commentary that notices possible echos and the parallels hidden in the text

Abstract:
This report aims at highlighting the political ideology of Hamas in a comparative approach through critical analysis and researches, based on a historical methodology. We followed this political movement through its religious ideology and Islamic references, from its position as a Palestinian opposition to the reached power itself. We tried to achieve the following objectives:Describing the emergence and evolution of the movement, the living embodiment of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine, as well as the factors and circumstances that led to its decline and its rise at certain periods of the History. We also seek to know the roots of this movement before and after 1948 and until the outbreak of the intifada in 1987.Identifying the factors that influence the policies and decision making of the Movement, espacially the ideological and partisan aspect, as a matter of fact that Hamas is a fundamental element of the international movement Muslim Brotherhood, where Islam is the ideological and political reference. The report tackles the aspect of the national Palestinian actions and partisan interests who have imposed their own visions and pragmatic positions. In addition, it is necessary to analyze the division of leadership between the inside and outside group, but also the important influence of the military wing in the Policy building and decision making.Identifying the positions of Hamas movement towards the Palestinian political system into its two components – the PLO and the Palestinian Authority – towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its settlement options and therefore towards the political settlement, compared to the PLO positions and other Palestinian factions. This research seeks to determine the position of Hamas on the principle of the Palestinian liberation and towards the political PLO initiatives, the Arab States, the organizations and the friendly countries, such as the International Conference, and to bring out the political initiative of Hamas and comparing it to the other forces' positions.Identifying the relation between the Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, the degree of autonomy that Hamas has in the organization and its international framework. The research tries to study the nature of the relations of the movement with the international, regional and Arab organizations. A special attention is given to the United States, the European Union, Russia and the other regional countries in order to understand its place and position in the axis of the region. The attention is especially focused on the « axis of the resistance » and the kind of relations Hamas has with the Arab countries of Palestine, like Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and States who have an big impact on the regional policies, particularly Iran and Saudi Arabia.Exploring the experience of Hamas in the transitional period, from the opposition to the takeover and parallelly with the experience in the political aspect of Islam with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafi Jihad, Al-Qaida, Hezbollah and the Turkish Party of Justice and Development, from its inception until its accession in power

Abstract:
Environmental Infrastructure in the Gaza Strip (GS) is a multidisciplinary sector related to provision of basic services of water supply, waste water, storm water drainage and solid waste disposal. The emerging institutions of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) are facing problems managing the poor physical facilities of the environmental infrastructure. The thesis assesses the current status of the environmental infrastructure in the GS within the context of designing a conceptual, sustainable and integrated Environmental Infrastructure Management Model (EIMM). This is the core of the research, which aims at making a contribution towards understanding and assessing Environmental Infrastructure Management (EIM) including the links to, and mandates of, the institutions involved in EIM tasks. In this context, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is introduced as a vital integrating element for EIM institutions. The lack of quantitative data on EIM in GS represents a major constraint, and therefore a well structured questionnaire was adopted for data collection. Reviews of the institutional set up of EIM in the UK, Israel, Jordan and GS were undertaken. To facilitate comparison among EIM systems, a Hybrid Comparative Technique (HCT) was developed aiming at highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the existing EIMM in GS, compared with other well established models elsewhere, to streamline institutional setup in GS. The quantitative information from the questionnaire is placed as triangulation alongside the qualitative data from the literature review to give further insight into the issues being studied. A SWOT analysis under different and political scenarios was the outcome of evaluating the performance of the new EIMM. The study showed that the EIM institutions in GS do not have clear mandates where roles and responsibilities overlap. New central Institutions are needed including central water, solid waste and GIS facilities. Privatization, human resource development, and customer satisfaction should all be considered.

Abstract:
Sludge is one of the main critical environmental problems in the Gaza Strip. More than 400 m³/day of aerobic sludge and approximately 50,000 m³/year of anaerobic sludge are disposed of into the environment without any treatment. The random disposal of sludge pollutes the groundwater aquifer, contaminates the agricultural products and impacts the health of residents. Three new treatment plants will be constructed in the Gaza Strip to replace the existing ones. The activated sludge system is the proposed treatment technology instead of the existing stabilization ponds and aerated lagoon. It has been estimated that more than 3,700 m³ of raw sludge will be generating daily by the year 2025 in the Gaza Strip. Experiences of using reed bed· systems for sludge dewatering in many places in Europe and USA, together with monitoring results of a three-year pilot project in the Gaza Strip circumstances are promising. A reed bed system is easy to operate and maintain, and is financially attractive compared with conventional drying beds. A reed bed system can be used for a three-year cycle with an average hydraulic loading rate of 40 cm every two-weeks.

Abstract:
How has the political visibility of Palestinians within the occupied West Bank and Gaza been constructed and managed by the Israeli occupation? How has the management of the Israeli field of vision and the distribution of Palestinian visibility shaped who can be seen, how and from what position? Focusing on the politics of visibility within Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including Gaza in a post-Second Intifada period (2005-2014), the thesis examines how anti-occupation activists employ visual digital technologies and online communication platforms to make the occupation, and its effect upon Palestinians, more visible to Israelis and international spectators. Concentrating on the collaborative nonviolent action between Palestinians, Israelis and international visual activists, the thesis identifies how antioccupation artists, activists and organizations have worked to creatively challenge the established regimes of visibility within Israel/Palestine. Taking into consideration the potential of new media technologies as a means of producing, enhancing and/or sharing a critically engaged perspective on the occupation, each chapter will highlight different collaborative processes undertaken in an effort to challenge the visual management of the occupation by the Israeli military and government. This study draws upon recent literature that prioritises the relationship between vision, visibility, power and social theory (Brighenti, 2010) and the politics of visibility in Israel/Palestine (Hochburg, 2015; Faulkner, 2014) to present visual activism as meaningful way of widening the space in which politics can be conceived, performed and represented. After situating the thesis in an appropriate context between visual culture and the politics of visibility, the thesis explores how visibility is structured around varying regimes that differ from context to context and are formed around a number of political, military and social mechanisms. Thereafter the four core chapters will examine how visual activism has been employed within the West Bank and Gaza, highlighting a range of geographical, social and political complexities that underpin the specific conditions of each case study. The first case study highlights how social media and various online platforms can be mobilized in an effort to raise awareness of an event to an international audience, namely the Bedouin village of Susiya and their campaign to remain on their lands. In this regard, visual activism is considered as a visibility making tool that is networked and multi platform. Moreover, the case of Susiya outlines the problematic nature of ‘creating the right image’ as well as attesting to how lesser considered images might have the most effect when circulated online. The second case study explores how the Internet was used successfully as a strategic tool to maximize the visibility of nonviolent resistance within the Village of Bil’in for a largely international audience. While the third case study identifies how visual activism and new media technologies can be imbedded within the act of protest as a means of enhancing and defining the visual outcome. Lastly, case study four reflects on the 2014 Israeli military operation in Gaza, commonly referred to as Operation Protective Edge, as a way to delineate the range of conditions related to the military occupation over Palestinian territories and the creative ways visual activism has worked to overcome these conditions in a very specific political space. The thesis examines and applies visual activism as a means of highlighting Palestinian visibility and the Palestinian struggle against the occupation through nonviolent, creative action. Distributed online, these collective efforts have been conceived for an internationally sympathetic audience rather than exclusively for Palestinian or Israeli web-users.

Abstract:

Nicholas Adams (1993) suggests that the destruction of the built environment and architecture of a city during war is an effective way of demoralizing and even eradicating the enemy. Goonewardena and Kipfer (2007) suggest that the built environment helps establish not only the common shared spaces in which individuals live their lives, but a sense of place and community identity. When buildings and public spaces are anthropomorphized, their destruction affects every aspect of a community. Urbicide as a tactic of urban warfare has changed the look and feel of many places such as the Balkans, Germany in World War II, and The Gaza Strip. The many faces of war have changed the landscape and homogeneity of the areas affected. Long-term, continual bombardment, precision attacks, and incursions by armies have in many cases all but destroyed the pre-existing physical environment. In its stead, is created a non-permanent built environment on the verge of destruction or change by non-civil forces. This investigation uses The Gaza Strip as a case study and looks into the impermanence of the built environment. The continual violence of change has greatly affected the resident Palestinian population. I will also examine how the temporary nature of the built environment and constant threats of change and destruction have affected everyday spaces. Although the population understands the potentially transitory nature of the structures, this does not deter them from rebuilding, when materials are available. Using data obtained from different nongovernmental organisations and aid agencies, this paper examines how repeated bombardment, precision attacks, and incursions reconfigure space, buildings and the functionality of the built environment in The Gaza Strip. Changes in the form and functionality are conceptualized as continuous processes that produce constant rounds of rebuilding. The shape and composition of the built environment is evaluated after specific bombardments, attacks and incursions in order to assess the extent and form of rebuilding. The results show that each round of destruction is followed by differing degrees of reconstruction that again restructure the look of the built environment.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the political and socioeconomic consequences of Israeli policies of resettlement on the Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip. It does so by arguing that the resettlement schemes undertaken by the Israeli authorities in the Gaza Strip are part of a continuous policy to further disperse the Palestinian refugees. This policy has its roots in Herzl's early call to expel Palestinians from Palestine, and materializes in the 1948 exodus. The thesis argues that political, military and socioeconomic measures undertaken by the Israeli authorities do not conform with their humanitarian claims -to improve the living conditions of Gaza Strip refugees. Israeli measures can instead be seen to conform to a type of modern counter-insurgency doctrine, promoted by security forces, in response to revolutionary guerrilla warfare or insurgency. The concept of resettlement, it is suggested, is an integral part of this doctrine. The primary research findings demonstrate that the "civic action" projects, ostensibly designed to improve the living conditions of Gaza Strip refugees, have not succeeded in meeting their real purpose, that of pacification. Instead, the repressive military and political measures used by the Israeli military authorities have sharpened the military and political consciousness of all Gaza refugees. Indeed, by maintaining the cohesive cultural and political identity, the refugees relocated to the housing projects have thwarted the Israeli policy of divide and rule, contributing as much to the strength of the Palestinian national movement as their compatriots remaining in the refugee camps.

Abstract:
The anchoring of Dorotheus in the spiritual tradition of the desert provided the methodology of this work. His texts are studied in dialogue with his spiritual masters. After the prolegomena which place this father of the VI th century in his context, the first part focuses on defining what humility is. The fundamental idea of Dorotheus is brought to light in the second part: the triple dynamic of goodness. The humility constitutes one of its components along with the charity and the knowledge of God. Dorotheus clarifies in a particularly interesting manner the intervention of humility within the act of goodness. In this second part, the mission of the humble Christ is also highlighted. A third part examines at the beginning how someone who is weak can reach sainthood, then it explains the role played by the humility in the spiritual struggle and, finally, its contribution in promoting an authentic fraternal charity

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between war, law and visuality. It focuses on Israel's 23-day assault on Gaza that began in December 2008. The thesis has three main aims. First, to historicize the assault, and put forward the idea that Israel's resort to violence takes not only militaristic but crucially also legalistic forms (chapter 2). Second, to problematize the relationship between war and law through a discussion of the post-assault discourses on the indeterminate legality of the war (chapters 3&5). I suggest that in the age of what commentators are calling lawfare, law has reached its maximal instrumentalization and has become a military tactic. Third, to interrogate the visual archives of the assault in order to explore the ways in which war is being fought through visual fields and visual tactics which I call imagefare (chapter 4). The turn toward the legal and the visual in Israeli military strategy presents political, ethical and pragmatic problems for resisting and opposing war and so in relation to the current situation in Gaza and the ambivalent status of international law I conclude by posing the question: ‘what now?’ (chapter 5).

Dorotheus of Gaza is a sixth century Christian monk whose understanding of the monachism is firmly grounded on the tradition passed on to him by the fathers of the desert. His reflections upon some of the ascetic practices such as the anachoret, renouncements, the constant examination of the heart, the meditation upon evil and death, besides spiritual guidance, can all be closely linked to some philosophical stoic exercises. Some stoic notions are set very far from the fundamental Christian dogmas and, yet, we can see some sort of continuity among Portico philosophers and the Christian monks

Abstract:
The objective of this dissertation is to show how the work by Choricius of Gaza has been transmitted from his time to the present. The volume is made up of five sections. The first section focuses on the printed editions of Choricius’ work and on the studies about his success as an author and about his manuscript tradition. The second part, dedicate to the direct manuscript tradition, includes the list and the catalog of all the Choricius’ manuscripts. The third chapter presents the stemma codicum of the Patroclus (the work that has been copied in the most of the manuscripts) and explains also the process by which the manuscripts were classified in families. The fourth chapter is mainly centered on the fortune of Choricius as an author during the centuries. Firstly, information on the first editions of Choricius is provided, then the presence of extracts by the rhetor in the sacro-profane florilegia and in the manuals of rhetoric is analyzed, and then the imitations that were made of Choricius are noted. Finally, in the same section, there is an analysis of the characters who played an important role for the fortune of the rhetorician. The Appendix is the last section: it contains the results of the collation of the 58 manuscripts that have transmitted the Patroclus. At the end of the volume, besides the bibliographic abbreviations and tables, there are the indices of watermarks, places, manuscripts and names, which allow the readers to find the information they need

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: Arab Middle East Countries which have a predominance of young population have undergone rapid socioeconomic changes, instability and epidemiologic transition. In these countries cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality accounts for 45% of deaths, in Palestine it was estimated up to 30.3% in 2018. Also, the burden of risk factors is worrying; one quarter of adult population was hypertensives, tobacco smoking exceeds 30% in males, obesity is alarming mainly in females, and 9.2% of adults are living with diabetes. Very few community-based on CVD studies were conducted in these countries. Methods: In 2017 a cross-sectional study using stratified cluster sample, was conducted in accordance with WHO’s STEP wise. A sample of 2240 participants aged ≥25 years participated in the study. Results: The prevalence of CAD is 8.3%, stroke 3.0%, hypertension is found with a prevalence of 28.4%, diabetes19.1% and obesity 47.8% with higher rate in females (60%). Lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) is found with a prevalence of 13.7%. The prevalence increased with age and is higher in females than in males (respectively15.6% vs 11.6%). Hypertension and diabetes are the most significant associated factors with LEAD. Metabolic syndrome is present with a prevalence of 41% higher in females than males (50% vs 39%) and it is significantly associated with all cardiovascular conditions. Conclusion: According to these data the situation in Gaza strip is alarming, effort and research to monitor and improve strategies and policies for reducing cardiovascular risk are mandatory

Abstract:
One of the most controversial wars in contemporary history, both in terms of the ideological powers behind it and its continued struggle for over 60 years, is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The most recent outburst of the conflict, commonly known as the Gaza War, has attracted extensive global media coverage. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, the thesis incorporates an extensive content analysis, to chart patterns and regularities within a large corpus of four broadcast media (namely BBC Arabic, BBC World, Al-Jazeera Arabic and Al-Jazeera English). It then integrates a more interpretative discourse analysis, to investigate the cultural ideas evoked linguistically and, to a lesser extent, visually throughout the coverage. Assuming a qualitative stance, it also draws upon focus groups conducted in Jordan and England to examine the public s knowledge and understandings of the events on the ground, in addition to their evaluation of both organisations levels of objectivity and impartiality. To allow for a comparative dimension, the thesis develops two frames of analysis that systematically looks at two recurring themes and scrutinises their discursive strategies and functions in the construction of meaning and ideology. These include Provocation, which examines questions of responsibility and culpability; and Proportionality which embraces matters of legitimacy and authority in relation to the humanitarian aspect of the war. The findings indicate that the actions of a protagonist may be deemed legitimate with regard to provocation, but illegitimate with regard to their proportionality. The peculiar circumstances of the war pushed the media in the direction of greater separation from the predominant ideologies ensued by the Israeli Army. It suggests that both networks lack a coherent discursive strategy at the level of the lexical in their reporting of Gaza. The empirical findings also confirm that meanings devised by viewers are pertinent to their behaviours, attitudes and beliefs. This conceptualisation formulated three readings shaped by political, cultural and social formations: an oppositional (counter-hegemonic) reading, a dominant reading and a subliminal (sub-conscious) reading.

Abstract:
Despite extensive social science research on Palestine, the literature on the religious life of Palestinians is still modest, especially with respect to contemporary female piety. On 25 January 2006, the Islamic party Hamas won a decisive majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council. This landslide victory has drawn most media and scholarly attention to the political Islamisation programmes of Hamas. Remarkably, little research has investigated the wider diversity and more complex nature of grassroots religious activism in society. For example, no previous study, so far, has examined the growing female da’wa (piety) movement, which has become a dominant feature in the Gaza Strip. The study presented here is the first investigation focusing specifically on the female subjects of the piety movement—the da’iyat. These are pious women activists who carry out an extensive array of Islamic da’wa classes among women who seek religious education, guidance, and advice. The main aim of this study is to explore four questions: how female pious conviction is understood and produced, how the formation of the da’iyat’s agency is facilitated and restricted, how pious agentic tensions and da’wa (un)intended consequences exist within the local socio-political power structures, and to what extent dialogical perspectives on the question of women can be achieved between pious women and secular feminists. The literature review on Muslim women’s agency reveals a polarisation that reduces women’s agency to resistance to or compliance with male domination and Islamic traditions. My research suggests that women’s agency and the subject formation (at the level of the individual and collective) constitute a much more complex process and that the pious/feminist polarity constricts the enhancement of women’s agency, women’s rights, and gender justice. Based on an in-depth remote ethnography (a survey and mobile calls over the internet) in the Gaza Strip, this thesis provides a contextualised analysis of three agentic manifestations of women’s pious agency. In particular, this thesis goes beyond Saba Mahmood’s (2005) model of the pious subject in the Cairene women’s piety movement. It offers a detailed analysis of the multiple and contradictory aspects of the subject’s pious agency in the Gazan women’s piety movement. It also provides an important opportunity to investigate the relevance of Rachel Rinaldo’s (2013) model of pious critical agency among some Indonesian Muslim women and the scholarship of Islamic feminism to Gazan Muslim women. Significantly, the final research question situates women’s pious agency within the broader pious/feminist relationship. Firstly, in terms of the construction of pious conviction, I argue that the da’iyat’s meanings of piety are reflected in two interconnected terms: religious duty and self-realisation. These pious meanings are shaped by various structures, institutions, and relationships at the micro, meso, and macro levels of social systems. Secondly, I present three distinct, though sometimes overlapping, models of agency for pious women: moral, political, and interpersonal. Thirdly, this research provides a detailed discussion of the data that highlight sites of tension in these three pious modes of agentic expressions. Drawing together key findings from pious and secular feminist narratives, the analysis also offers a deeper insight into the da’wa’s (un)intended consequences on reinforcing hegemonic gender norms. Finally, this project shines a light on the importance of understanding these agentic positions and consequences within the larger context of the relationship between pious women and secular feminists. The case of the Gaza Strip shows a lack of exposure or attention to the possibility of developing pious feminist, or “pious critical agency” to use Rinaldo’s words, and key obstacles to go beyond the pious/secular divide. Overall, the analysis of the da’iyat’s subjective formation, models of female pious agency, and women’s relationships in the Gaza Strip helps not only expand our understanding and theorising of Islamic female piety, but also demonstrates more possibilities, visions, and challenges for pious/feminist women to collaborate and act upon shared interests.

Imperiale, Maria Grazia. "Developing language education in the Gaza Strip : pedagogies of capability and resistance." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/9109/.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of language education, and education more generally, in contexts of protracted crisis and emergencies is widely acknowledged as a potent tool for nurturing the wellbeing of individuals. It is also important in fostering development within afflicted societies. Despite this and an increasing interest in the improvement of the quality of education in these contexts (UNHCR, 2017; UNESCO, 2017; UNRWA, 2011), there has been scant scholarly attention given to language education models that emerge from those vulnerable settings, and to how they may differ from competence approaches developed in peace-time and in contexts of free mobility. Grounded in the theoretical framework of the capabilities approach for a holistic understanding of language education (Sen, 1999; Nussbaum, 2000; Crosbie, 2014), and motivated by rare empirical research investigating language pedagogies in contexts of pain and pressure, this study explores and co- constructs a grounded model for language education in the context of the siege of the Gaza Strip (Palestine). The Gaza Strip has been under siege since 2007, when Israel declared it ‘hostile territory’. The siege of Gaza prevents the free circulation of people, goods, and basic materials. As a result, two million people live, many as refugees of long standing, in a condition of ‘forced immobility’ (Stock, 2016) and worsening living conditions. These have been further affected detrimentally by three military operations in the last decade. The siege affects people’s mental and physical wellbeing, and the development of Palestinian society. In addition to the military hegemony, an epistemological hegemony shaped by orientalising tendencies perturbs all narratives about the ‘question of Palestine’ (Said, 1979; 1980; 1986). The chosen research methodology involves a cycle of critical participatory action research (CPAR), conducted online. The CPAR consists in the development, delivery, observation, analysis and evaluation of a series of specially designed workshops with 13 pre-service English teachers from the Gaza Strip. The aim of the research design is to investigate localized, critical, and creative language pedagogies. The workshop series focuses on the use of creative methods in language education, specifically on the use of Palestinian ‘Arts of Resistance’. The findings in this thesis demonstrate that: (a) pre-service English teachers value teaching approaches which move beyond competency-driven aims and instead engage with students’ dreams, hopes, values, and wellbeing; (b) the capabilities approach offers a lens through which language pedagogy can be framed within contexts of particular vulnerability; (c) participants value the use of Palestinian arts-based methods, as these enable a pedagogical practice which connects politics and aesthetics; and (d) the online network established during the research encounter shaped and was shaped by materiality and in relationality. A synthesis of these findings provides a metaphorical representation of an ecological language education in the context of pain and pressure.
