Abstract:
Of the more than 30 species of marine mammal occurring within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP), three are the focus of wildlife-based tours: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), dwarf minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and dugongs (Dugong dugon). Currently (April 2001), 19 permits, comprising 31 ships and two aircraft, allow whalewatching in the GBRMP. The combined passenger capacity of these craft is 3,238 at any one time (e.g., per day). However, fewer than 15,000 persons were recorded in ?dedicated? whalewatching tours each month during the May - October ?whale-watchin

Abstract A researcher or practitioner can employ a biofilm model to gain insight into what controls the performance of a biofilm process and for optimizing its performance. While a wide range of biofilm-modeling platforms is available, a good strategy is to choose the simplest model that includes sufficient components and processes to address the modeling goal. In most cases, a one-dimensional biofilm model provides the best balance, and good choices can range from hand-calculation analytical solutions, simple spreadsheets, and numerical-method platforms. Citizen or community science (CS) projects in the marine environment rarely consider carbon footprint and sustainability. In this case study, we assessed the effectiveness of ten CS methods used by tourists in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) and Coral Sea Marine Park (CSMP) who participated in the 2023 Citizen Science of the Great Barrier Reef expedition and the carbon footprint associated with these field methods. We also assessed the baseline coral reef knowledge of the tourists, observations of marine species, and the communication of our results to the public. Specifically, the

Antibodies induced in mice by the N-propionyl (N-Pr)-group B meningococcal polysaccharide (GBMP)-tetanus toxoid (TT) conjugate were bactericidal for GBM organisms independent of protein serotype. The antisera contained two populations of N-Pr-GBMP-specific antibodies, only one of which crossreacted with the GBMP. Particularly significant was the fact that the bactericidal activity was mainly associated with the population of antibodies that did not crossreact with the GBMP. Therefore it can be inferred from the above evidence that the N-Pr-GBMP mimics a unique epitope on the surface of GBM org

Partial label learning (PLL) is a complicated weakly supervised multi-classification task compounded by class imbalance. Currently, existing methods only rely on inter-class pseudo-labeling from inter-class features, often overlooking the significant impact of the intra-class imbalanced features combined with the inter-class. To address these limitations, we introduce Granular Ball Representation for Imbalanced PLL (GBRIP), a novel framework for imbalanced PLL. GBRIP utilizes coarse-grained granular ball representation and multi-center loss to construct a granular ball-based feature space thro

Inhibition by oligomers ranging from 2 to 12 residues was used to assay binding to IgMNOV by group B meningococcal polysaccharide preparations (GBMP) or by poly(A). The inhibitory properties of the oligomers were almost identical in both assays of the binding of GBMP to horse IgM (H46). The Grid Bandwidth Minimization Problem (GBMP) is to find an embedding of a given graph into a host graph such that the bandwidth over all edges is minimised. It is an NP-complete problem with applications in VLSI circuit design, numerical analysis, computational biology, graph theory and scheduling. In this paper, a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm is developed for GBMP in which initial solution is generated using two problem-specific construction heuristics. Four neighborhood strategies are designed to explore the search space. Experiments conducted on benchmark instances achieve results w

Batch reactor is an essential unit operation in almost all batch-processing industries. Different types of reaction schemes (such as series, parallel and complex) and different order of model complexity (short-cut, detailed, etc. ) result in different sets of model equations and computer coding of all possible sets of model equations is cumbersome and time consuming. In this work, therefore, a general computer program (GBRM - General Batch Reactor Model) is developed to generate all possible sets of equations automatically and as required. The main aim of this research was to estimate values for recreation in the Great Barrier Reef, and to identify how these values changed with changes in site quality. This was achieved in two stages in a case study analysis of recreation in the Capricorn Coast region. First, travel cost and contingent valuation methods were used to estimate the value of two recreational activities, fishing and beach use. Second, changes in recreation values due to changes in water quality and other relevant issues were estimated using contingent behaviour models. The approach undertaken in the study involved th
