Al-Arbi, Salem. "Condition monitoring of gear systems using vibration analysis." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2012. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/17821/.

Abstract:
It is often impractical to measure vibrations directly at /or close to their sources when condition monitoring gearbox systems. It is common to measure the vibration distant from the source due to limited access to the component which is to be monitored. In addition, operating the gearbox under different loads and speeds also produces vibration signals within different components. Vibration measured in this way may be significantly distorted by the effect of signal transmission paths and interference from other sources. Therefore, suppression of distortions is a key issue for remote measuremen

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using stress waves for condition monitoring of gears. The project involved setting up an experimental rig, carrying out experimental work, acquiring stress waves signatures, and processing the signals. It has been shown that stress waves can successfully be employed for early detection of incipient gear failure. A experimental gearbox was employed during the experiments. Miniature ultrasound transducers, both sensitive and sufficiently small, were manufactured and installed on the stationary outer race of the rolling element bearing

In particular, the detection and diagnosis of its faults in their early stages to minimise cost by maximising time available for planned maintenance and giving greater opportunity for avoiding a system breakdown. However, the diagnostic results obtained from monitored signals are often unsatisfactory because mainstream technologies using vibration response do not sufficiently account for the effect of friction and lubrication. Gearbox condition monitoring(CM) plays a vital role in ensuring the reliability and operational efficiency of a wide range of industrial facilities such as wind turbines and helicopters. Many technologies have been investigated intensively for more accurate CM of rotating machines with using vibro-acoustic signature analysis. Early failure detection has been an integral part of condition monitoring of critical systems, such as wind turbines and helicopter rotor drivetrains. An unexplored application of early failure detection is fatigue testing of driveline components. On many occasions, driveline components fail catastrophically, leaving no evidence of the root cause of failure and causing extensive damage to test equipment. This can be prevented by detecting failure in its early stages. Test specimen would be preserved, enabling correlation of test results with design predictions. In this thesis, a method for ear

This paper deals with the application of speed variable pumps in industrial hydraulic systems. The benefit of the natural feedback of the load torque is investigated for the issue of condition monitoring as the development of losses can be taken as evidence of faults. A new approach is proposed to improve the fault detection capabilities by tracking the changes via machine learning techniques. The presented algorithm is an art of adaptive modeling of the torque balance over a range of steady operation in fault free behavior. The project has gone through several stages of product development, from idea to working product and signal analysis. This thesis focuses on the simulation of the gyroscopic effect using the software MSC Adams. A simple shaft-disk system was created and parameter of the sys-tem were changed in order to study the influence of the gyroscopic effect. It was shown that an increasing bearing stiffness reduces the precession motion. Fur-thermore, it was shown that the gyroscopic effect vanishes if the disk of system is placed symmetrically on the shaft, which reduces the system to a Jeffcott-Ro-tor. However in the controlled environment of a laboratory it is difficult to test the robustness of the order-tracking procedure. The need thus exists to adjust the order tracking procedure so that it will be effective in the mining environment. The procedure needs to
