Full textThe Gebel Zawiye is one of seven members of the Limestone Massif located in the north-western Syria. This gebel is a collection of over 300 archaeological villages most of which date to the late Roman and Byzantine period between the second and the sixth century. My job is to make an inventory of archaeological gebel Zawiye and give an archaeological and historical comment. The satellite image, which provides a global view and learn about the geological properties of the regions concerned, aerial photos and topographic maps for descriptions on the scale of the vineyard areas and ground observation with occasional readings. My research takes place in two stages: 1) Firstly, the theoretical work based on a literature review with comparisons of data and historical and geographical informations,2) Secondly, the practical work will be done on the field with sketches, records and documentation of archaeological sites of the gebel Zawiye

Full textThe monograph of the village of Kefert ‘Aqab allows us to extend our field of research to the westernpart of the limestone mountain range of northern Syria, which until recently had aroused limitedinterest. The Ǧebel Waṣṭāni, bordered by plains on the southern, eastern, and northern sides, represents the southern part of a narrow strip of rock, which borders the Oronte Valley in the West. The ruins of the site extend over a vast, rocky headland situated at the extreme north of the range ofmountains. They have revealed the existence of an important locality of more than 80 residences, several communal buildings, a monastery, and two ecclesiastical complexes, one of which was laterfortified. The study, based on the detailed analysis of the surface of the vestiges, has delivered muchinformation on the economic, demographic, and social evolution of the farming community, mainlybetween the 2nd Century and the late 6th Century. The end of construction at the end of theProtobyzantine period did not mean the village was abandoned. Indeed, seen the importantmodifications to every building of the village, the village was well inhabited for an extended period oftime. Studying the medieval period fortified edifice, which was built on the site of the southernecclesiastic complex, shows that the site maintained its strategic nature during the conflicts that shookthe region during this period. Besides, following the conquest of the region by the Arabs over theFranks, the installation of a Muslim community, attested to in the interior of the fortified monument, which was thereafter deserted like in certain ancient homes, is evidence of the continuous occupationof the site until the Ayyūbide or even Mamelūke period

Full textThe Egyptian god Min has always been considered as a procreation god by many Egyptologists. However, the analysis of his image and his cult on the period from the beginning of the First Intermediate Period to the end of the 17th dynasty reveals a very different definition. His iconography shows a cryptic elaboration in the way of using various details composing his image. This present study reanalyzes the Coptite consort of Min as well as the reappropriation of the god’s image by the Theban deity Amun at the beginning of the Middle Kingdom. Revered during specific agrarian and dynastic religious festivals, Min was subject of a great veneration during this period, both from kings and private individuals. Min was also particularly praised in expeditionary contexts. From the wadi Hammamat to the Gebel el-Zeit via Mersa Gawasis and the peninsula of Konosso, this god was mentioned and figured for his warring and mineral abilities. Lastly, during the Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period, Min seems particularly revered in Abydos. He was inserted inside the Osirian cult with the creation of the figure of Min-Horus-nakht, the latter testifying the moving of the cult and the funerary and dynastic importance of the god in this city. With Abydenian hymns and the discovery of archeological fragments, the location of a sanctuary dedicated to the god could be brought to light. Regarding all the collected data, Min appears not as a procreation god but as a ‘Follower of Horus’, a god of strength with dynastic powers, a god of regeneration who acts over both the natural world and the underworld

Full textBased on a large corpus of works made of quartzite, centred on statuary but also taking into account other types of monuments, the present study is a review of this hard stone use by the ancient Egyptians during New Kingdom, mainly 18th and 19th dynasties. Quartzite or silicified sandstone was extracted from Gebel el-Ahmar quarries in the North and from Aswan quarries in the South. Having mentioned the geologic characteristics of quartzite and its name in the ancient Egyptian texts, the study deals with the work in the quarries (organization and technical aspects like extraction technologies, tools, rough or unfinished pieces found in situ) and the transport of the stone from the quarry to the workshop. The second part of the research, introduced by a chapter on quartzite use before New Kingdom, is dedicated to the monuments of the catalogue put in their context : their examination reveals the significant development of this material during the 18th dynasty, with a peak under the reigns of Amenhotep III and Akhenaton, heavily influenced by solar beliefs, and a revival under Seti Ist (especially in Heliopolis) and Ramesses II, who wanted to emulate his predecessor Amenhotep III. The use of quartzite in royal and divine monuments might be explained by its solar symbolism, due to the red colour of the stone and the mythical origin of the Gebel el-Ahmar : it is the reason why this high-value stone is almost exclusively reserved for the Egyptian elite. An appendix containing the results from scientific analysis conducted on some quartzite objects kept in the Louvre Museum completes the study

Full textThe first half of the VIIth century BC have been marked in Egypt by an important transition. The Kushite pharaohs (the Nubian 25th dynasty, also named “black Pharaohs”) who dominated the country since the end of the eighth century, were ousted by a northern dynasty of Libyan origin (the 26th or Saite dynasty), in the context of the Assyrian invasions. This period of transition, between the reigns of the Kushite Taharqa (690-664) and the Saite Psamtik I (664-610) is the subject of this doctoral research.During the last few decades, the historical studies about the 25th and 26th dynasties have clarified the main events that marked Egypt and Nubia during this transitional period. If the more important historical events are relatively well known, the stages of the historical changes and the evolution of the pharaonic expression have been less studied. The main objective of this work is to clarify them by identifying the main protagonists (kings, clergy and local dignitaries) but also the political, social and cultural changes. The reign of the king Taharqa, thanks to the important and numerous documents (historical records and monuments) from Egypt and Nubia, constitute an important part of this research. The study of the textual and monumental expressions of Taharqa’s power (especially in Thebes in Egypt, or Kawa and Gebel Barkal in Nubia) and its evolutions in the context of the Assyrian wars, highlight the issues of this historical period. These informations can be completed by the documentation of the Kushite king Tanutamun and the saite Psamtik I

Full textEjsmond, Wojciech. "Gebelein during Pre- and Early Dynastic Period in Context of Other Centres." Doctoral thesis, 2020. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/3676.
Full textThe subject of this doctoral thesis is the study of archaeological sites located in the micro-region of Gebelein, which is located in southern Egypt, about 28 km south-west of Luxor. They are dated to the 4th and early 3rd millennium BC. This place was the subject of numerous legal and illegal excavations since at least 1884. The results of these works have never been published in sufficient extent. Nevertheless, they were crucial for studies of the origins of ancient Egypt. The Northern Necropolis of Gebelein was the first excavated predynastic site with published research results (although in very limited extent). The artefacts discovered there brought interest of specialists. The Predynastic Period was not yet recognised back then, so the objects found at Gebelein and other sites fuelled a discussion among researchers, which in later years led to the correct dating of these objects to the Pre- and Early Dynastic Periods. Official archaeological works at Gebelein were initiated in 1885 and were continued by several scholar for the following years in irregular time intervals, but most of their results are almost unknown. Therefore, the first goal of this dissertation was the reconstruction of the research history of the Gebelein micro-region. Based on publications, unpublished archival documents (e.g. museum inventories, excavations journals, correspondence, photographs etc.), as well as field works of the author of this dissertation, locations of the archaeological sites have been established, as well as where and when various archaeological missions were working. Artefacts sourced from Gebelein are presented in the catalogue being part of this dissertation. It was also possible to establish, in some cases, where at Gebelein some objects were found. This helped to reconstruct the archaeological topography of this area. Numerous artefacts that come from Gebelein prompted researchers to speculate on the rank of the centre located in pre- and early dynastic times in this micro-region. Some specialists suggested that a proto-state capital was located there. While others challenged such interpretations. Nonetheless, everyone agree that the lack of sufficient research on Gebelein unable proper evaluation of the significance of this area. Therefore, one of the goals of this PhD thesis is an assessment of the importance and role played by the settlements at Gebelein in the times of formation of ancient Egyptian state. To achieve this it was necessary to present a wide background of the processes that took place along the Nile during the times in question, especially in the areas of early political centres, analysing artefacts from Gebelein, and comparing these objects and archaeological topography of Gebelein with proto-state capitals and low-ranking sites to understand the significance of Gebelein. As a result of the research, it was concluded that there was a political centre in the Gebelein micro-region, and it was established that the largest number of opulent artefacts at Gebelein was found at the North Necropolis, which was cemetery of the city of Sumenu. Based on the available material, it can be concluded that most likely this town was the leading centre of this micro-region and the capital of the local proto-state. Furthermore, going beyond the strict objectives of this dissertation, the author observed that capitals of the proto-states were at equal distances from each other, about 50 km from each other (with the exception of Middle Egypt where such early sites are poorly known). The genesis of their rank as capitals of proto-states originated from their earlier roles as local centres related to the redistribution of goods.
