Abstract:
Gebeng Sarong is a typical woven fabric from Limbang Jaya village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. This craft is increasingly disappearing due to the difficulty of marketing carried out by Limbang Jaya village craftsmen. The packaging and brands used on Gebeng Sarongs are still very simple and unattractive so their marketing is less able to compete with similar products. The lack of creativity of craftsmen in Limbang Jaya is also due to the low level of education of the craftsmen, only elementary or junior high school graduates. In addition, the location of the village is rather remote, causing Gebeng Sarongs to have limited marketing. To help overcome this problem, the Sriwijaya University team held a training activity for craftsmen to develop their products for a wider market with attractive packaging. The stages of this activity include: problem identification, activity preparation, activity implementation, and activity evaluation. The activities carried out were in the form of training activities for craftsmen on the use of information technology and graphic applications., Training activity materials included an introduction to the Canva application, tutorials on making packaging and packaging designs, and direct practice. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test it can be concluded that this activity has succeeded in improving the skills of craftsmen in designing aesthetic packaging according to market needs, thereby increasing the appeal of Gebeng Sarong in a wider market. This activity is also expected to help maintain the Gebeng Sarong as the typical fabric of the South Sumatra.

Abstract:
This study focuses on airborne heavy metal pollution in the industrial area. Eight points from Paka and Gebeng Industrial Area respectively were selected for this study within two monsoon seasons. The samples were analysed for heavy metals (Cd, As, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the mean concentration value of As, Pb and Cd for Paka were 5.0 ng/L ± 1.0, 107.0 ng/L ± 88.2, and 10.0 ng/L ± 7.5, respectively and Gebeng were 3.5 ng/L ± 1.5, 69.3 ng/L ± 59.3 and 5.1 ng/L ± 3.8, respectively in the southwest monsoon - much higher than the target value by European Commission in Directive 2004/107/EC and Directive 2008/50/EC. It could be concluded that the industrial and transportation emission were the major source of heavy metals in the atmosphere along the Paka and Gebeng Industrial Area.

Abstract:
Abstract Peatlands are amongst the most critical ecosystems, representing hydrological, biological, and biogeochemical characteristics determined by water storage functions and greenhouse gas exchange. Peat soils have distinct problems of acidity, compressibility, and nutrient imbalances, which limit their agricultural, constructional, and environmental uses. Most current studies have focused on a single component, such as organic content, microbial diversity, and mineral composition, leading to a rather limited understanding. This paper combines microbial community screening with mineral and morphological analysis to evaluate various features and dynamics of peat soils and their uses, and therefore it brings new insights into the physical, chemical, and biological properties that concern its long-term use. The methodology entails collecting soil samples from various locations in Gebeng, Malaysia, and then determining their moisture content and pH. After that, it included the Morphological characterisation using Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Characterisation was then done, followed by DNA extraction and sequencing using the QIAamp PowerFecal Pro DNA Kit. The obtained research results, including SEM, showed that, in general, peat soil particles are poorly fragmented, the shape of which is irregular and heterogeneous with complex angularity rounded and elongated shapes, while the EDX analysis described a significant qualitative contrast. Also, XRD analysis discovered a complex mineralogical composition composed mainly of quartz (SiO2). Moreover, the tested peat samples showed a wide variety of inorganic salts, minerals, and organic components by FTIR examination. On the other hand, DNA sequencing results revealed richness in bacterial diversity in composition and relative abundances. This study generally has shown that Gebeng peat soil, with high organic matter content and diverse microbial populations, together with a reasonably balanced mineral input, potentially holds promising opportunities for agriculture and other industries such as construction, CO₂ reduction, and environmental management, but problems like acidity of soils, high compressibility, or nutrient imbalances require specified strategies in their management to be effectively exploited.

Abstract:
Abstract The quick response of contaminants from various sources and the extensive deterioration of rivers’ water quality may harm our biodiversity, aquatic creatures, and environment. The depletion of this river water quality can be caused by both natural and manmade factors and this condition will jeopardize its use for many human uses and may harm the residents’ health. Our concerning phenomenon prompted this investigation to study the primary pollutant source in two rivers near Gebeng. A total of ten sampling stations from both Balok and Tunggak Rivers were selected and physicochemical parameters reading were measured monthly afore and in COVID-19 Pandemic spread in Malaysia from March 2019 to October 2020. Later, the Cluster and Principal Component Analysis (CA and PCA) were applied. CA grouped the ten sampling stations into three clusters which are upstream areas that were considered as most polluted. PCA yields only four significant components that represented 90.68% of the total variability. The findings of this study can provide useful information regarding the current state of river water quality in the Gebeng area, and the proposed method can be used as a strategy for sustaining the use of water resources in support of long-term development goals.

Abstract:
Lichen is a well-documented useful biological indicator for monitoring air pollution using various methods such as the biodiversity of lichens. However, the use of lichen biodiversity to estimate air pollution levels in industrial areas, particularly in Malaysia, is still weak, and the determinants of its diversity are unknown. As a result, the purpose of this research is to analyse air pollution in Malaysia’s industrial urban area using the lichen biodiversity index and its determining factor. This research was carried out at Gebeng, Pahang, Malaysia. A total of 14 sample locations were chosen, each with three replication stations. The Lichen Biodiversity Index (LBI) approach was employed in this study to estimate the degree of air pollution in Gebeng. This study also investigated three potential determinants of lichen biodiversity: carbon monoxide (CO) concentration, relative humidity (%), and vehicle motor frequency (per hour). The LBI was plotted and analysed using the Geographical Information System (GIS) programme ArcGIS 10.8.1, and the determining variables were identified using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient software PAST 4.03. This study discovered a total of 11 lichen species known as metropolitan lichen. The average LBI across Gebeng is 19.5 (moderate alteration). In the industrial region, CO has an inversely significant relation with lichen biodiversity (r = −0.7433), relative humidity has a significant relation with lichen biodiversity (r = 0.8249), and vehicle motors are not significant as a determining factor for lichen biodiversity (r = 0.2068). This study demonstrates that lichen, with its diversity of species in one place, can be utilised to measure and quantify the degree of air pollution in industrial areas. In addition to that, in the context of an industrial city, vehicle motors do not have a significant impact on lichen biodiversity due to the existence of other pollutants sources from industrial activities. Relative humidity is a sign of clean air and humid surroundings, which is good for lichen growth; meanwhile, higher CO concentration will restrict the growth of sensitive-type lichen and will only allow the resistant type of lichen to grow.

Abstract:
The pH of the water of the studied stations was slightly acidic to neutral, while EC was included within recommended standard. The contamination intensity, pollution level, classification of water indicated that the wastewater having higher contamination level, especially, BOD, COD, NH3-N, PO4, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni and Hg concentration were high in all samples with lower DO value. The high COD content indicated that the wastewater of Gebeng area contains higher wastes. However, the results were differed on the basis of seasons and types of industries. It was also found that Pb and Hg concentrations were higher in wet season in comparison to dry, while Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Ba and As concentrations were higher in dry season in comparison to wet. All sampling sites were categorized as highly polluted. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjb.v44i1.22731 Bangladesh J. Bot. 44(1): 103-110, 2015 (March)

Abstract:
Atmospheric dust can contain various heavy metals which are known to have detrimental effects on human health. Understanding the spatial distribution of these heavy metals is essential for evaluating the potential risks connected with exposure to atmospheric dust. The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model that uses the concentrations of heavy metals in the study area to evaluate health hazards in both adults and children. High volume air samplers were loaded with filter paper at a constant flow rate for dust sampling in Paka and Gebeng. The aqua regia method was used to treat the dust samples. The data were analysed by using chemometrics and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to show the spatial and prediction model of health index from heavy metals concentrations in the study area. The results showed the total heavy metal concentrations were found to be in the following decreasing order of iron (Fe) (0.218 mg/L ± 0.192), zinc (Zn) (0.083 mg/L ± 0.059), lead (Pb) (0.079 mg/L ± 0.119), cadmium (Cd) (0.004 mg/L ± 0.003), copper (Cu) (0.004 mg/L ± 0.004) and arsenic (As) (0.001 mg/L ± 0.001) for northeast monsoon whereas Fe (0.407 mg/L ± 0.270), Zn (0.110 mg/L ± 0.092), Pb (0.088 mg/L ± 0.118), Cd (0.008 mg/L ± 0.008), Cu (0.004 mg/L ± 0.005) and As (0.004 mg/L ± 0.001) for southwest monsoon. Three principal components factor for northeast and southwest monsoon respectively were extracted from Principal Components Analysis (PCA), which are based on eigenvalue (>1.0). During northeast monsoon, Factor 1 revealed Fe and As. Factor 2 revealed Cu, Cd and Zn and Factor 3 revealed Pb. During southwest monsoon, Factor 1 revealed Pb, Cd and Zn. Factor 2 revealed Fe and Cu and Factor 3 revealed As. The estimations of HQ for pathways in this study decreased in the order of ingestion>dermal contact>inhalation. Health index (HI) prediction model value for adults decreased in the order of Fe>Pb>Cd>As>Zn>Cu whereas Fe>Pb>Cd>As>Cu>Zn HI prediction model value for children. HI values of these metals for children were higher than adults. However, the values of health risk obtained in this study are in the receivable range (HI<1.0). Fe concentrations were recorded highest in both areas and seasons, while PCA revealed three factor analysis of heavy metals for both areas and seasons with As being the most identifying sources of heavy metals through sensitivity analysis. ANN was an efficient technique to compute prediction models of health index in the study area. This study suggested that the prediction models approached, will provide a better insight into air quality information to understand potential environmental health hazard towards people and mitigation strategies plan in the future.

Abstract:
The physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of the constituents of magnesium-rich synthetic gypsum produced in a rare earth-refining plant located in Gebeng, Pahang, Malaysia was conducted through elemental chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX)-analyzer, thermal analysis, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction. The crystalline nature of the by-product was studied using FTIR spectroscopy. Elemental analysis confirmed the presence of Ca and Mg, which are essential macronutrients required by plants and this Ca alongside the high pH (9.17) of MRSG may confer on the material a high acid neutralization capacity. From the result, it was observed that the studied by-product is a heterogeneous crystalline material comprising of gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and other major components such as calcium (magnesium) compounds (hydroxide, oxide, silicates, and carbonate) and sulfur. These aggregates may contribute to give an acid neutralization capacity to MRSG. The XRD study of MRSG indicated a high content of gypsum (45.4%), shown by the d-spacing of 7.609 Å (2-theta 11.63) in the diffractogram. The infrared absorption spectra of MRSG indicate close similarities to mined gypsum. The results of the characterization indicated that MRSG has valuable properties that can promote its use in amending soil fertility constraints on nutrient-deficient tropical acid soils.

Abstract:
Peats are often considered as a geotechnically problematic soil due to their poor behaviour and exhibit low soil properties like high compressibility, low shear strength, high fibre content, high moisture content and low bearing capacity values. Chemical stabilization was proven to be an effective method to stabilize the problematic soil. To date many additives like Ordinary Portland Cement, fly ash, lime and other alternatives binder has been applied to improve the compressive strength of the problematic soil. The study describes the effect of compressibility of improved peat soil using waste from industrial such as Mg-rich synthetic gypsum (MRSG) by-product and concrete waste aggregate from institution laboratory waste that can be used to improve the settlement problem of the Gebeng, Malaysia peat soil. The test was conducted at varying percentages of MRSG and concrete waste aggregate additives at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight of the soil. The unconfined compression strength (UCS) test was determined to obtain the optimum strength ratio and the data revealed that the optimum ratio of gypsum and concrete waste required to enhance the properties of peat soil were at 5% gypsum, 10% concrete waste, and 10% concrete waste combined with 10% gypsum. Coefficient of consolidation, compression index, and coefficient of volume compressibility were obtained by oedometer test for both untreated and treated peat soil with additives. The compression ratio of the peat soil indicated the peat was very compressible and however, the compression ratio was observed at very slightly compressible once the soil stabilized with the optimum ratio mix. The results indicated that the combination of these two additives improved the compressibility characteristics of peat soil. This research will contribute to the fundamental behaviour of geotechnical problematic soil in Malaysia which results in sustainable approach by recycling the industrial and institutional waste, Mg-rich gypsum and concrete waste aggregate for soil improving instead of implementing soil removal replacing techniques.

Abstract:
