Abstract:
This paper is the result of research done on the TV comedy show (series) "Kursadžije" by Grand Production. The attention is directed towards understanding the motives of the Fool (buffoon) which appears as the characteristic of the main characters in the show. Kursadžije (a rough translation would be Course-attending-people) are attendants of a course for Special Balkan Forces and they are the representatives of the countries that constituted the former Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. By using the theoretic guidelines of Klappe’s about the Fool as a social type, and the analysis of V.Trifunovic, I will demonstrate why all of the Kursadžija’s are Fools and how they are different one from the other based on their different follies (buffoonery, craziness). Having in mind that this is a Serbian TV show and that the Serbian attendant of that course, Gedža Crazy Milojko (the American equivalent of Gedža could be Redneck or Hillbilly), is the only one who has the term "Crazy" (Fool) in his name, I will particularly pay attention to the motive of "Serbian craziness", and examine is it a way to emphasize how special the Serbs are, how unique and unbeatably exotic, i.e., why is the "Serbian craziness" valued as a positive one.

Abstract:
Dimensionality Reduction (DR) models are highly useful for tackling Hyperspectral Images (HSIs) classification tasks. They mainly address two issues: the curse of dimensionality with respect to spectral features, and the limited number of labeled training samples. Among these DR techniques, the Graph-Embedding Discriminant Analysis (GEDA) framework has demonstrated its effectiveness for HSIs feature extraction. However, most of the existing GEDA-based DR methods largely rely on manually tuning the parameters so as to obtain the optimal model, which proves to be troublesome and inefficient. Motivated by the nonparametric Gaussian Process (GP) model, we propose a novel supervised DR algorithm, namely Gaussian Process Graph-based Discriminate Analysis (GPGDA). Our algorithm takes full advantage of the covariance matrix in GP to constructing the graph similarity matrix in GEDA framework. In this way, more superior performance can be provided with the model parameters tuned automatically. Experiments on three real HSIs datasets demonstrate that the proposed GPGDA outperforms some classic and state-of-the-art DR methods.

Abstract:
The E-hook of β-tubulin plays instrumental roles in cytoskeletal regulation and function. The last six C-terminal residues of the βII isotype, a peptide of amino acid sequence EGEDEA, extend from the microtubule surface and have eluded characterization with classic X-ray crystallographic techniques. The band position of the characteristic amide I vibration of small peptide fragments is heavily dependent on the length of the peptide chain, the extent of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, and the overall polarity of the fragment. The dependence of the E residue’s amide I ν(C=O) and the αCOO− terminal ν(C=O) bands on the neighboring side chain, the length of the peptide fragment, and the extent of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the structure are investigated here via the EGEDEA peptide. The hexapeptide is broken down into fragments increasing in size from dipeptides to hexapeptides, including EG, ED, EA, EGE, EDE, DEA, EGED, EDEA, EGEDE, GEDEA, and, finally, EGEDEA, which are investigated with experimental Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) computations to model the zwitterionic crystalline solids (in vacuo). The molecular geometries and Boltzmann sum of the simulated Raman spectra for a set of energetic minima corresponding to each peptide fragment are computed with full geometry optimizations and corresponding harmonic vibrational frequency computations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,2pd) level of theory. In absence of the crystal structure, geometry sampling is performed to approximate solid phase behavior. Natural bond order (NBO) analyses are performed on each energetic minimum to quantify the magnitude of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The extent of the intramolecular charge transfer is dependent on the overall polarity of the fragment considered, with larger and more polar fragments exhibiting the greatest extent of intramolecular charge transfer. A steady blue shift arises when considering the amide I band position moving linearly from ED to EDE to EDEA to GEDEA and, finally, to EGEDEA. However, little variation is observed in the αCOO− ν(C=O) band position in this family of fragments.

Vaivadaitė-Kaidi, Eglė. "Conseptual metaphors of ʽparadiseʼ in the translation of the Quran by Sigitas Geda." Lietuvių kalba, no. 5 (December 28, 2011): 1–11. http://dx.doi.org/10.15388/lk.2011.22800.

Full text
Abstract:
The article deals with conceptual metaphors of ʽPARADISEʼ in the Lithuanian translation of the Quran on the basis of the conceptual metaphor theory proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. The aim is to discover to what extent a translation can reveal the linguistic landscape characteristic of a different culture. The research provides a comparison of the translations of the Quran into the Lithuanian (Geda 2008), Spanish (Asad 2001), and English (Ysuf Ali 1998) languages. It is presumed that in the translations of typologically remote languages the recurrent metaphors have most likely been taken from the original, whereas the differences in translation are present due to the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of the target language. The investigation has revealed that translation may only partially disclose the linguistic world view of another culture because in the text of a translation there is always overlap between two cultures; it is a kind of a product of synthesis between two world views. The comparison of different translations has disclosed that the Lithuanian translation is characteristic of some peculiarities which can be ascribed to the search for creativity and individual poetic expression if we consider a metaphor a rhetorical figure. However, if we treat metaphor as a tool for the cognition and expression of a nation's mentality, such translation does not always perform its key function, i.e. to convey the text of another culture as precisely as possible.

Abstract:
Objective: To describe a holistic and comprehensive approach to the assessment of sufferer’s perceptio ns of health-related quality of life (HRQ oL) in a cohort of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods: The G EDMA (Grupo de Enfermedades Desmielinizantes de Madrid, in Spanish) study is an ongoing longitudinal survey using quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The baseline cohort consisted of a large sample of MS patients recruited from 13 hospitals in Madrid, Spain. Using a standardized protocol we collected data concerning the sociodemographic and health status characteristics of patients, as well as implementing a modified Spanish version of the Functio nal A ssessment of Multiple Sclerosis quality of life instrument. Primary caregivers were interviewed using a specific protocol combined with the Zarit Burden Interview. Results: The index cohort comprised 371 MS patients (68.7% female) of mean age 38.9 ± 0.9 years. A ge, sex and clinical form distribution were similar to other MS population-based surveys. There were 258 (69.5%) relapsing-remitting (RR) MS patients and 113 (30.5%) progressive MS patients. More than one-third of the married patients with progressive MS and almost a quarter of the RRMS patients separated or divorced following a diagnosis of MS; 71.3% of the progressive MS patients as well as 65.8% of the RRMS patients were unemployed as a consequence of the disease. Q ualitative analysis showed that friendship and family relationships and occupational status were the most significant dimensions influenced by MS. O n the other hand, the speech analysis of primary caregivers showed that emotional burden was related to patients’ physical disability. Furthermore, primary caregivers described the influence of MS on their own occupatio nal status, their nonacceptance of the disease, a perceptio n of a lack of support by other members of the family as well as a ‘selfish and intransigent’ attitude of the patients themselves. Conclusions: The analysis of the G EDMA cohort provides valuable information that helps clarify the impact of MS on patients’ HRQ oL.

Abstract:
The genus Hasarius Simon, 1871, is revised following methodology recommended by “Pragmatic classification” of Prószyński (2017). Structure of the genus is insufficiently known, containing at present single cosmopolite species and a few of uncertain congeners. The paper introduces the following nomenclatorical corrections: Hasarius adansoni: Jastrzebski, 2010b: 321, f. 1, 4-5 (female only) = Hasarius tropicus Jastrzebski, 2010 - correction of identification. Species: kweilinensis Prószyński, 1992, orientale Zabka, 1985, dactyloides Xie, Peng & Kim, 1993 listed variably in combinations with generic names Habrocestum, Habrocestoides, Hasarius and Chinattus seem to be misplaced in these genera and deserve transfer to own new genus. Qualification of 6 species of Hasarius as "nomina dubia" by the WSC (ver. 18.5) after Roewer's (1954[1955]: 1523-1524) is changed to "pending revision" because of existence of preserved type specimens. Synonymy of the genera Gedea Simon, 1902 and Meata Zabka, 1985 proposed recently by Maddison (2015) without published documentation are not recognized here until proof will appear printed.

Abstract:
Several techniques are used for fixation of Bennett's fractures. The aim of this study was to assess a technique of arthroscopic-assisted reduction and percutaneous cannulated screw fixation of Bennett's fractures. Seven patients (mean age 29 years) with three fractures Type I and four fractures Type II according to Gedda were operated under arthroscopic lavage, fluoroscopic screw fixation, and arthroscopic control of the joint reduction. Arthroscopy, showed satisfactory joint reduction in all cases. At 4.5 months, the mean pain score was 1 (0–4), QuickDASH 15 (0–61), and Kapandji score 9 (5–10). Compared to the contralateral side, first web opening was 86% (58–100), key pinch 73% (45–89), grip strength, and 85% (40–100). Four secondary displacements were noted, two of which had a step of more than 1 mm. Our results showed that the use of arthroscopy for percutaneous screw fixation of Bennett's fractures facilitates joint reduction but does not guarantee stability of fixation.

Abstract:
Does the health of women and men living with and without minor children differ, and are age differences evident in the association? For self-rated general health, depression, back pain, overweight, smoking and sporting inactivity, the GEDA data 2009–2012 (18–54 years, n = 39,096) were used to calculate prevalence for women and men stratified by parental status (living with children: yes/no) and age. Moreover, we calculated odds ratios and predictive margins, performing logistic regressions with interaction terms of parental status and age. Women and men aged 45–54 living with children are healthier than those not living with children. Parents aged 18–24 smoke more frequently and do less sport; young mothers are also more likely to be overweight and suffer from back pain than women not living with children. In multivariable analysis, the interaction of living with children and age is significant for all outcomes (except depression and back pain in men). Living with children is an important social determinant of health, highly dependent on age. It is to be discussed whether the bio-psycho-social situation has an influence on becoming a parent, or whether parenthood in different phases of life strains or enhances health.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cancer is a complex disease affecting millions of people worldwide, with over a hundred clinically approved drugs available. In order to improve therapy, treatment, and response, it is essential to draw better maps of the targets of cancer drugs and possible side interactors. This study presents a large-scale screening method to find associations of cancer drugs with human genes. The analysis is focused on the current collection of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs (which includes about one hundred chemicals). The approach integrates global gene-expression transcriptomic profiles with drug-activity profiles of a set of 60 human cell lines obtained for a collection of chemical compounds (small bioactive molecules). Using a standardized expression for each gene versus standardized activity for each drug, Pearson and Spearman correlations were calculated for all possible pairwise gene-drug combinations. These correlations were used to build a global bipartite network that includes 1007 gene-drug significant associations. The data are integrated into an open web-tool called GEDA (Gene Expression and Drug Activity) which includes a relational view of cancer drugs and genes, disclosing the putative indirect interactions found for FDA-approved drugs as well as the known targets of these drugs. The results also provide insight into the complex action of pharmaceuticals, presenting an alternative view to address predicted pleiotropic effects of the drugs.

Abstract:
It is a frequent observation that twinning runs in the families [5] and we have recently reported that such is also the case with Gregor Mendel's pedigree [4]. The problem we are concerned with, now, is the identification of the “gemellogenetic” factor postulated by Gedda already in 1951 [2].We thought we should start by going back to experimental embryology. Clearly, as shown by the experimentally induced MZ twinning in Triton or the spontaneous multiple MZ twinning in Armadillo, there must exist a temporal threshold below which individual parts of a single conceptus can still show totipotence.Interestingly, recent studies of molecular histology have stressed the role of cell membranes and of membrane receptors in the transmission of specific messages related to the position and function of the cell. This has led Edelman [1], in particular, to identify a specific kind of molecule that appears early in-embryonic development and is responsible for cell adhesion, thus contributing to organogenesis and the shaping of the embryo by regulating cell movements and the topologic development of tissues. These so-called cell-adhesion molecules (CAM) are proteins that can differentiate both in function and in expression. In terms of function, there are molecules responsible for the adhesion of nerve cells (N-CAM), of liver cells (L-CAM), etc. In terms of expression, there are embryonic forms (E-CAM) and adult forms (A-CAM), the former being characterized by larger quantities of sialic acid. This chemical difference accounts for a different aggregation effect on the cells, that is, for a different cell adhesion. Moreover, the E-CAM and A-CAM can be interconverted, at different times and with variable speed.

Abstract:
Background: Behavioural prevention and counselling programmes for lifestyle-related cardiovascular risk factors are widely offered. However, their population-wide use is largely unexplored, particularly in high-risk persons with known CVD or diabetes. Methods: Data were collected within GEDA 2009, a national health survey covering a representative sample of 21,262 adults in Germany. Standardised structured computer-assisted telephone interviews included self-reported physician-diagnosed coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, diabetes as well as height, weight, usual diet, physical activity, and the use of programmes for weight reduction, healthy diet and improvement of fitness or mobility in the last twelve months. Results: The use of prevention measures was lowest for weight reduction (men 2.1%, women 3.5%), somewhat higher for healthy diet (men 3.2%, women 4.7%), and highest for improvement of fitness or mobility (men 8.6%, women 16.1%). Among individuals with the respective risk factor, programme participation was still low: 5.5% in obese men (women 7.2%) for weight reduction, 2.8% in men (women 3.7%) who did not eat fruit or vegetables daily for healthy diet, and 7.9% in physically inactive men (women 15.7%) for improvement of fitness or mobility. In the presence of known CVD or diabetes, participation increased inconsistently and only moderately. Conclusion: Our results show low participation in behavioural prevention measures for lifestyle-related risk factors even in individuals with known CVD or diabetes. Further studies should investigate knowledge about potential programme benefit, availability and reimbursement in both patients and health care providers.

Abstract:
Diseases of the musculoskeletal system are quite common diseases. Moreover, the use of pharmacotherapy may not always be effective, which is associated with a large number of side effects of modern non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The way out of the situation can be the use of carboxytherapy (CO2 therapy), which has a complex of pharmacological effects: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antihypoxic and antioxidant. These CO2 effects are used to eliminate the symptom complex associated with pain, inflammation, ischemia, hypoxia, and joint stiffness. The use of carboxytherapy in orthopedics is primarily aimed at eliminating pain in various diseases of the spine, joints, muscles in the back, neck, thighs, knees and other organs. The main target of the action of carboxytherapy in diseases of the musculoskeletal system are Zakharyin – Geda zones, trigger points, myofibralgia zones and acupuncture points. When CO2 affects these zones and points, vasodilation, muscle relaxation and increased tissue oxygenation reflexively occur, which leads to a decrease in inflammation, pain and other functional disorders in the joints and muscles. Due to the polypathopathogenetic pharmacodynamics of CO2, carboxytherapy is often used for post-traumatic and inflammatory conditions of joints, arthrosis, and other acute and chronic joint pathologies of various etiologies. In addition, with combined pharmacotherapy of these diseases, carboxytherapy reduces the duration of NSAIDs and other drugs, reduces their dosage, which reduces the risk of side effects and increases the effectiveness of CO2 therapy.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction The numerous health benefits of physical activity (PA) for people with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are well-documented. In Germany, there are limited data on whether adults with NCDs fulfill health-oriented PA recommendations. This study describes the prevalence of meeting PA recommendations among adults with select NCDs. Method Based on the national representative GEDA-2014/2015-EHIS (N = 24,016), the self-reported PA data of the European Health Interview Survey–Physical Activity Questionnaire (EHIS-PAQ) were classified with respect to fulfilling recommendations for health-enhancing aerobic activities (≥ 150 min per week with at least moderate intensity) and muscle strengthening (≥ 2 times per week). These binary indicators were used to analyze the association between the prevalence of sufficient PA and the self-reported presence of certain NCDs and multiple NCDs to reflect multimorbidity. Results Compared to the general adult population, sufficient aerobic PA was lower for most NCDs, with the lowest level among people with diabetes mellitus, obesity, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and depression. Compared to the general adult population, sufficient muscle strengthening was lower for some NCDs (diabetes mellitus, obesity, depression), but it was higher in people with musculoskeletal diseases (osteoarthritis, lower back pain). Multimorbidity was negatively associated with sufficient PA levels. Conclusion The study specifies the need to promote PA among adults with select NCDs to counteract insufficient levels of health-enhancing PA and to reduce the individual and societal burden of NCDs.

Abstract:
IntroductionDepressive disorders have been related to increased health service utilization, but specific information about associations between health professional-diagnosed depression and the utilization of health care and preventive services in the general population is limited.ObjectivesTo compare the use of health care and preventive services among men and women with and without diagnosed depression in the general population in Germany.AimsTo examine the association of diagnosed depression with the utilization of healthcare and preventive services.MethodsCross-sectional analysis of data from the representative telephone survey German Health Update (GEDA) 2009 and 2010 (n = 43.312 residents in private households 18 years and older). We analyzed associations between self-reported health professional-diagnosed depression (past 12 months) and the use of a range of healthcare services and preventive services covered by statutory health insurances using multivariable regressions adjusted for age, socio-economic status, marital status, employment and number of chronic somatic conditions.ResultsTwelve-month diagnosed depression was associated with increased health care service utilization (physician contacts, hospital admissions, rehabilitation) in both sexes. Of the preventive services, diagnosed depression was associated with increased use of general health check-ups, cancer screening and flu vaccination among women, while there was no association with dental check-up and tetanus and pertussis vaccination. Among men, no association of diagnosed depression with any preventive service was found except for cancer screening.ConclusionsHealth professional-diagnosed depression is associated with increased health service utilization independent of somatic comorbidity and socio-demographic confounders. This includes some preventive services in women and only one preventive service in men.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
Introduction. Risky alcohol consumption (RAC) and heavy episodic drinking (HED) by parents can have negative effects on their children. At present, little is known about these forms of alcohol consumption among parents in Germany. The aim of this analysis is to estimate the percentage of parents living in Germany who practise RAC and HED and to study associations between these consumption patterns and sociodemographic factors. Material and Methods. The data basis comprises the data of the nationwide studies “Gesundheit in Deutschland aktuell” (GEDA) of 2009, 2010, and 2012. The data were collected by means of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI). Our analysis included all participants living in a household with at least one child of their own under 18 years of age (n = 16,224). Information on RAC and HED was collected using the AUDIT-C screening instrument. Logistic regression models were used to study the relationship between parental alcohol consumption and sociodemographic variables. Results. 18.4% of the mothers and 29.6% of the fathers exhibited RAC; 8.4% of the mothers and 21.0% of the fathers practised HED. After mutual adjustment, RAC showed a significant association with the level of education, income (only mothers), employment status (only mothers), migration background, relationship status (only mothers), and the age of the youngest child. HED showed a significant association with income (only mothers), the age of the youngest child (only mothers), and the level of education (only fathers). Conclusions. The presented analysis emphasizes the relevance of preventive measures to reduce parental alcohol consumption. In addition to universal interventions, risk group-specific measures (e.g., for parents with high income) are needed to reduce parental alcohol consumption and thus support a healthy development of children.
