Abstract:
The rise of money politics transactions in every election event causes the Christian's ethical confusion, between involving oneself as a form of political responsibility or withdraw as an ascetic endeavour. This study aims to examine the issue of money politics from the point of view of Christian ethics by basing it on the thoughts of Norman L. Geisler regarding the ethics of graded absolutism and the concept of leader qualifications according to Exodus 18:21. The research method used was a hermeneutic study. The results showed that according to the ethics of graded absolutism, Christians could make difficult choices to do money politics as long as they remain in the corridor of obeying the higher laws, loving God more than humans, loving God more than governments, and exercising mercy more than honesty.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In the present study, we investigated whether motion streaks, produced by fast moving dots Geisler 1999, distort the positional map of stationary flashed objects producing the well-known motion-induced position shift illusion (MIPS). The illusion relies on motion-processing mechanisms that induce local distortions in the positional map of the stimulus which is derived by shape-processing mechanisms. To measure the MIPS, two horizontally offset Gaussian blobs, placed above and below a central fixation point, were flashed over two fields of dots moving in opposite directions. Subjects judged the position of the top Gaussian blob relative to the bottom one. The results showed that neither fast (motion streaks) nor slow moving dots influenced the perceived spatial position of the stationary flashed objects, suggesting that background motion does not interact with the shape-processing mechanisms involved in MIPS.

Abstract:
In this contribution to the CNS Spectrums neuroanatomy series, Stefanie Geisler, MD, discusses the lateral habenula (LHb). This nuclear complex is one of the areas of the brain that forms part of the cross-talk between limbic fore-brain and some important ascending modulatory pathways. Situated at the caudal end of the dorsal diencephalon and classically regarded as projecting largely to the brainstem, including the serotoninergic raphe nuclei, the LHb receives afferents from widespread forebrain areas. Therefore, the LHb is able to influence serotonin tone in the brain, and has long interested neuroanatomists as a potential limbic-motor interface. Nonetheless, the LHb was not much discussed outside neuroanatomical circles until recently, when it was discovered that its impact on the mesotelencephalic dopamine system is probably much greater than had been assumed. The LHb has become a hot topic. This article-addresses these developments and emphasizes the clinical relevance of this interesting brain structure.

Abstract:
A promising idea to use the transport of spin-polarized conduction electrons in a magnetic hetero-structure in order to invert population of the charge-carrier spin level in one of its layers, aiming at creation of an active environment for the electromagnetic radiation amplification, has been realized in a number of FMС/SC structures in which FMС is a ferromagnetic conductor and SC is a semiconductor. The n-InSb single crystals, featured by a high mobility of charge carriers, narrow ESR line, and anomalously high absolute value of the negative g-factor (g = −52), were used as SC. The following materials were used as FMC playing a role of spin polarizer: (i) ferromagnetic semiconductors EuO0.98Gd0.02O and HgCr2Se4, (ii) Geisler alloys Co2MnSn, Ni2MnSn and Co2MnSb. We have demonstrated that the spin-polarized electrons injection into the n-InSb semiconductor from the above-mentioned ferromagnetic materials results in a generation of the laser-type electromagnetic radiation.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Optimal management of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) remains undefined. However, recent data support the conclusion that upfront consolidation with high dose therapy with autologous stem cell rescue (HDT/ASCR) can improve the PFS (Dreyling, et al., 2005; Geisler, et al., 2008) and possibly OS (Geisler, et al. 2008). Based on gene expression profiling data, the proliferation signature has emerged as a critical determinant of prognosis in MCL (Rosenwald, et al., 2003). Immunohistochemical assessment of proliferation as estimated by MIB-1 (Ki-67) staining has been shown to predict outcome in patients with MCL treated with chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy. With conventional chemotherapy, the reported MIB-1 staining cutoff associated with poor prognosis reportedly varies from 10–30%. Since 1994 we have treated patients (pts) with MCL with sequential chemotherapy followed by HDT/ASCR. The current analysis is a retrospective review of our treatment program focused on the impact of upfront consolidation with HDT/ASCR on the prognostic significance of proliferation as measured by MIB-1 immunohistochemistry. Methods: Seventy-nine patients underwent upfront consolidation with HDT/ASCR for MCL. Fifty-two patients had evaluation of proliferation by MIB-1 immunohistochemistry. MIB-1 expression was estimated visually and assigned a percentage. Patients were binned into quintiles of MIB-1 expression: 0–20% (n=32, 61.5%); 21–40% (n=5, 9.6%); 41–60% (n=5, 9.6%); 61–80% (n=5, 9.6%); and 81–100% (n=5, 9.6%). Outcomes were analyzed by the method of Kaplan-Meier and comparisons were by log-rank. Results: The EFS and OS at 5 years was 65.1% and 61.4% respectively for the subset of patients with available MIB-1 staining (n=52); the outcomes for the entire group (n=79) did not differ from the subset. Outcomes (PFS, OS) were evaluated by MIB-1 quintile with successive cutoff values of 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. MIB-1 cutoff values of 40% or less were not predictive of outcome. However, when the cutoff was 60% or 80%, both the PFS and OS were significantly worse for the high proliferation group. Nineteen percent of patients had a proliferation fraction of greater than 60%. For patients with MIB-1 staining of >60% the PFS was 4.2 years and was not reached for the group with staining ≤60% (p=0.004). Similarly, overall survival was significantly different, (p=0.031). Conclusions: These findings suggest that upfront consolidation with HDT/ASCR can partially overcome the adverse impact of proliferation on outcome and the adverse outcomes are seen in a subgroup of approximately 20% of patients with MIB-1 staining of greater than 60%.

Abstract:
The article demonstrates the insufficiently studied differences in the notions of behavioral manifestations in children suffering from autistic spectrum disorder among representatives of their immediate social surrounding, i.e. parents, psychologists and educators. We used methods of structured observation (D. Stott’s observation chart), semi-structured interview (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale) and a communicative capabilities diagnostic technique adapted by S.E. Gaidukevich, V. Geisler, F. Gotan). It has been established that parents tend to underestimate the symptom-load of dysfunctional behavior in their children compared to the assessments of these disorders by psychologists and educators. We also established that parents assess the development of most adaptive skills in their children higher than psychologists and educators. The study revealed that there is a low degree of consistency in the assessment of communicative abilities of children with autistic spectrum disorder by parents, educators and psychologists. The obtained data allows us to recommend the introduction of the necessary stage in the organization of psychologist’s training for work with a family raising a child with ASD: self-reflection of one’s own position in assessing behavioral manifestations, as well as coordination of ideas about symptoms of behavioral disorders in the process of planning and conducting developmental work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This video supplement of Neurosurgery Focus is devoted to minimally invasive spine surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery has gained popularity amongst patients and physicians over the past decade because it has been shown in select instances to lower blood loss and reduce length of hospital stay for appropriately selected candidates. This supplement includes videos from many of the leaders in the field. Pioneers like Frank LaMarca, Paul Park, Cheerag Upadhyaya, Juan Uribe, and Mike Wang have all sent in videos depicting minimally invasive spinal deformity surgery options. Abstract:
The article analyzes the forms of rationalism and fideism proposed by Ukrainian Protestant theologians at the beginning of the XXI century. It turns out that these forms of rationalism and fideism were made possible by overcoming the anti-intellectualism that was characteristic of Protestantism in Soviet times. The opposition of tendencies to rationalism and fideism is connected with the positioning of Ukrainian Protestants in the postmodern times. Proponents of de facto rationalism propose to reconstruct the modern religious worldview, re-synthesizing elements of liberal and fundamentalist concepts. The study shows that hopes for the restoration of the modern worldview in the face of the challenges of the early XXI century contain elements of utopianism. Proponents of Fideism suggest taking full account of the real state of affairs in the postmodern era and recognizing the impossibility for Christians to use modern rationalism in all its forms. At the same time, faith acquires special significance as an expression of the personal relations of the holy people with God. Ukrainian Protestant rationalism in the article is analyzed on the example of the work of Sergei Golovin as the most consistent expression of this worldview. It has been proven that his ideas depend on the concepts of Norman Geisler, a prominent Protestant theologian. Golovin, imitating Geisler, believes that the Christian worldview should be the final superstructure over the foundation of classical logical rationalism and the ontology of being. This logic comes from classical Thomism. Golovin's rationalism is the rationalism of formal logic. Golovin's first controversial proposal is to reduce the paradoxes and contradictions contained in the Bible. Such a reduction contradicts the biblical studies of the beginning of the 21st century, and therefore can no longer be convincing for professional theologians. For ordinary believers, this reduction is an obscure rationalization of the image of God they have in reading the Scriptures. The second controversial proposition is to convert people first to logical rationality as the ideological foundation of humanity, and then to their conversion to Christianity. Such a proposal is largely outdated, because in the twentieth century it became clear that rationality in itself can be an instrument of any worldview and does not ensure the preservation or rehabilitation of humanity. By comparing it with theological practices of restoring humanity through the ethics of accepting another, the author argues that the restoration of humanity is possible through recourse to the potential of existentialist spirituality, theology of interpersonal communication, and other practical strategies of Christian theology. The biggest shortcoming of Sergei Golovin's rationalism is the proposal to build his own "scientific creationism", which denies the basic scientific theories of today. The most successful element of Golovin's system was social ethics, which offers the idea of a modern state governed by the rule of law as one that can be deduced from the spirit and letter of the biblical commandments. The fideism of Ukrainian Protestant theology is born from the understanding that the ethical acceptance of others and love for them is possible only on the basis of personal faith. The challenges of the beginning of the 21st century require the acceptance of another, but individuals and communities lack the natural strength to accept such. And only faith and faith-generated love help to be open to others. Also, the post-capitalist economy of mutual gift, proposed by theologians and Christian communities, is based only on personal faith. It has been proven that the fideism of Ukrainian Protestant theology is closer to the ideas of postconservatism than the concepts of postliberalism. It has been found that radical protection of individual rights and humane treatment of others is common to the rationalism and fideism of modern Ukrainian Protestant theology. It is these ideas that are important for understanding what humanity is, which should be a prerequisite for being a true Christian.

Abstract:
To identify sites of self-association in type III intermediate filament (IF) proteins, we have taken an "anti-idiotypic antibody" approach. A mAb (anti-Ct), recognizing a similar feature near the end of the rod domain of vimentin, desmin, and peripherin (epsilon site or epsilon epitope), was characterized. Anti-idiotypic antibodies, generated by immunizing rabbits with purified anti-Ct, recognize a site (presumably "complementary" to the epsilon epitope) common among vimentin, desmin, and peripherin (beta site or beta epitope). The beta epitope is represented in a synthetic peptide (PII) modeled after the 30 COOH-terminal residues of peripherin, as seen by comparative immunoblotting assays. Consistent with the idea of an association between the epsilon and the beta site, PII binds in vitro to intact IF proteins and fragments containing the epsilon epitope, but not to IF proteins that do not react with anti-Ct. Microinjection experiments conducted in vivo and filament reconstitution assays carried out in vitro further demonstrate that "uncoupling" of this site-specific association (by competition with PII or anti-Ct) interferes with normal IF architecture, resulting in the formation of filaments and filament bundles with diameters much greater than that of the normal IFs. These thick fibers are very similar to the ones observed previously when a derivative of desmin missing 27 COOH-terminal residues was assembled in vitro (Kaufmann, E., K. Weber, and N. Geisler. 1985. J. Mol. Biol. 185:733-742). As a molecular explanation, we propose here that the epsilon and the beta sites of type III IF proteins are "complementary" and associate during filament assembly. As a result of this association, we further postulate the formation of a surface-exposed "loop" or "hairpin" structure that may sterically prevent inappropriate filament-filament aggregation and regulate filament thickness.

Abstract:
Abstract. A number of studies have shown that 5-day planetary waves modulate noctilucent clouds and the closely related Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) at the summer mesopause. Summer stratospheric winds should inhibit wave propagation through the stratosphere and, although some numerical models (Geisler and Dickinson, 1976) do show a possibility for upward wave propagation, it has also been suggested that the upward propagation may in practice be confined to the winter hemisphere with horizontal propagation of the wave from the winter to the summer hemisphere at mesosphere heights causing the effects observed at the summer mesopause. It has further been proposed (Garcia et al., 2005) that 5-day planetary waves observed in the summer mesosphere could be excited in-situ by baroclinic instability in the upper mesosphere. In this study, we first extract and analyze 5-day planetary wave characteristics on a global scale in the middle atmosphere (up to 54 km in temperature, and up to 68 km in ozone concentration) using measurements by the Odin satellite for selected days during northern hemisphere summer from 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Second, we show that 5-day temperature fluctuations consistent with westward-traveling 5-day waves are present at the summer mesopause, using local ground-based meteor-radar observations. Finally we examine whether any of three possible sources of the detected temperature fluctuations at the summer mesopause can be excluded: upward propagation from the stratosphere in the summer-hemisphere, horizontal propagation from the winter-hemisphere or in-situ excitation as a result of the baroclinic instability. We find that in one case, far from solstice, the baroclinic instability is unlikely to be involved. In one further case, close to solstice, upward propagation in the same hemisphere seems to be ruled out. In all other cases, all or any of the three proposed mechanisms are consistent with the observations.

Abstract:

"Letrozole suppresses plasma oestradiol (E2) levels more completely than anastrozole in postmenopausal women with breast cancer." Journal of Clinical Oncology 24, no. 18_suppl (June 20, 2006): 552. http://dx.doi.org/10.1200/jco.2006.24.18_suppl.552.

Abstract:
552 Background: Letrozole (L) is a more potent aromatase inhibitor in vitro than anastrozole (A). One study in 12 patients showed that in patients L provides more complete inhibition of whole body aromatase and suppression of estrone sulphate levels than A but L did not significantly suppress E2 levels more than A possibly because of the small size of the study and the difficulty of measuring E2 in postmenopausal women (Geisler et al, JCO, 20, 751, 2002). The current aim was to conduct a much larger study to determine whether 2.5mg L suppresses E2 significantly more than 1mg A and if so in what proportion of patients this is the case. Methods: 54 postmenopausal women with invasive estrogen receptor positive breast cancer were randomised as part of their adjuvant hormone therapy to receive either: 12 weeks of L followed by 12 weeks of A (L→A) or 12 weeks of A followed by 12 weeks of L (A→L). Blood for hormones were taken at the same time of the day before and after 12 weeks of each drug. E2 was measured by a highly sensitive radioimmunoassay (Dowsett et al, Cancer Res 1987;47:1957–61) with a formal detection limit of 3pmol/l. In this study we also quantified values by extrapolation below this limit. Results: 27 patients had L→A and 27 A→L. Baseline E2 levels varied from 3 to 91 pmol/l with a median of 26 pmol/l. Only 1of 54 (2%) patients had an E2 value ≥ 3pmol/l after L compared with 20 of 54 (37%) after A(p <0.000005). After extrapolation, mean E2 level after A was 2.91 (SEM 0.18) pmol/l with a median of 2.70 pmol/l and after L was 1.76 (SEM 0.10) pmol/l with a median of 1.70 pmol/l (p<0.0001). Mean residual estradiol was 9.2% of baseline with A and 5.6% with L. Conclusions: This study has demonstrated unequivocally that the more complete inhibition of aromatase achieved by 2.5mg of letrozole than 1mg of anastrozole results in a greater degree of suppression of E2, the most bioactive oestrogen.
