Abstract:

In deregulated electricity markets, generation companies (GENCOs) make unit commitment (UC) decisions based on a profit maximization objective in what is termed profit based unit commitment (PBUC). PBUC is done for the GENCOs demand which is a summation of its bilateral demand and allocations from the spot energy market. While the bilateral demand is known, allocations from the spot energy market depend on the GENCOs bidding strategy. A GENCO thus requires an optimal bidding strategy (OBS) which when combined with a PBUC approach would maximize operating profits. In this paper, a solution of the combined OBS-PBUC problem is presented. An evolutionary particle swarm optimization (EPSO) algorithm is implemented for solving the optimization problem. Simulation results carried out for a test power system with GENCOs of differing market strengths show that the optimal bidding strategy depends on the GENCOs market power. Larger GENCOs with significant market power would typically bid higher to raise market clearing prices while smaller GENCOs would typically bid lower to capture a larger portion of the spot market demand. It is also illustrated that the proposed EPSO algorithm has a better performance in terms of solution quality than the classical PSO algorithm.

Abstract:
With the advent of restructuring in the power industry, the conventional unit commitment problem in power systems, involving the minimization of operation costs in a traditional vertically integrated system structure, has been transformed to the profit-based unit commitment (PBUC) approach, whereby generation companies (GENCOs) perform scheduling of the available production units with the aim of profit maximization. Generally, a GENCO solves the PBUC problem for participation in the day-ahead market (DAM) through determining the commitment and scheduling of fossil-fuel-based units to maximize their own profit according to a set of forecasted price and load data. This study presents a methodology to achieve optimal offering curves for a price-taker GENCO owning compressed air energy storage (CAES) and concentrating solar power (CSP) units, in addition to conventional thermal power plants. Various technical and physical constraints regarding the generation units are considered in the provided model. The proposed framework is mathematically described as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem, which is solved by using commercial software packages. Meanwhile, several cases are analyzed to evaluate the impacts of CAES and CSP units on the optimal solution of the PBUC problem. The achieved results demonstrate that incorporating the CAES and CSP units into the self-scheduling problem faced by the GENCO would increase its profitability in the DAM to a great extent.

Abstract:
Electricity price forecasting has a paramount effect on generation companies (GenCos) due to the scheduling of the electricity generation scheme according to electricity price forecasts. Inaccurate electricity price forecasts could cause important loss of profits to the suppliers. In this paper, the financial effect of inaccurate electricity price forecasts on a hydro-based GenCo is examined. Electricity price forecasts of five individual and four hybrid forecast models and the ex-post actual prices are used to schedule the hydro-based GenCo using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). The financial effect measures of profit loss, Economic Loss Index (ELI) and Price Forecast Disadvantage Index (PFDI), as well as Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of the models are used for comparison of the data from 24 weeks of the year. According to the results, a hybrid model, 50% Artificial Neural Network (ANN)–50% Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), has the best performance in terms of financial effect. Furthermore, the forecast performance evaluation methods, such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE), are not necessarily coherent with inaccurate electricity price forecasts’ financial effect measures.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the financial implications, from the point of view of an investor in renewable energy, which sells the energy for an uncertain price of electricity and decides to take advantage of the Colombian tax policy over the renewable energy. The policy, known as Investment Tax Allowance (ITA), encourages installation of renewable projects in a country traditionally dominated by hydro power. Price is modeled as a non-stationary autoregressive stochastic process with normally distributed error terms. Costs, and uncertain revenue and taxes are considered to assess the financial impact on a solar project when the policy is implemented. Since impact varies according to project ownership, two cases are evaluated: a generation company (GENCO-1) that only owns the solar project; and, an existent generation company (GENCO-2) that owns a portfolio of projects. Results indicate that if ITA is applied, it is likely that the GENCO-1 cannot take the full advantage of the incentive, as opposed to the GENCO-2. Although this policy might not satisfy planner objectives since it does not guarantee the construction of significantly high capacity of new renewable energy projects, it definitely represents an attractive mechanism to decrease tax obligations at the GENCO-2 level. Finally, a theoretical analysis shows that investment cost affects the mean of the present value; whereas tax rates impacts both its mean and standard deviation.

Abstract:
Pumped storage is the largest-capacity form of grid energy storage available. A multi-period oligopolistic model for analyzing the bidding strategies of pumped storage GenCo (PSG) is proposed in this paper. In the pumping periods, the pumped storage unit (PSU) is simulated as a special load. While in generating periods, PSU is treated as a normal generator. In this model, all GenCos are assumed to exercise Cournot strategies to maximize their own profits. The resulting equilibrium formulation is established in terms of a mixed linear complementarity problem. The purpose of this paper is to provide an efficient simulation tool for the PSG to determine its bidding strategy in an oligopolistic environment. The proposed model can also be used to study various factors that may impact PSG’s profit. Results of a six-bus test system are analyzed to illustrate the characteristics of the proposed model.

Abstract:
This paper presents an artificial immune system algorithm to the short-term hydrothermal scheduling and unit commitment problem. This technique is applied to maximize the profit of Generating Companies (GENCO) which consider the softer demand constraint. A novel method is proposed for solving Hydrothermal Scheduling (HTS) using Artificial Immune System (AIS) in a competitive electricity market. The proposed algorithm is tested on four-hydro and three-thermal system for 12 hours. It is observed from the numerical results that the proposed algorithm provides better profit as compared to the conventional method and hence can be adopted by GENCO. Abstract:
This research optimises the mix and structure of Generation Companies (GenCos) in the Sumatra power system, Indonesia. Market power, indicating the ability to raise prices profitably above the competitive level, tends to be a significant problem in the aftermath of electricity market restructuring. In the process of regulatory reform and the development of competitive electricity markets, it is desirable and practical to establish an efficient number of competitor GenCos. Simulations of a power system account for multi-plant mergers of GenCos subject to a regulatory measure of the Residual Supply Index and the influence of direct current load flow and the topology of the system. This study simulates the Sumatra power system in order to determine the following: optimal market structure, efficient GenCo generation mix, and the optimal number of competitive GenCos. Further, this study seeks to empirically optimise the electricity generation mix and electricity market structure of the Sumatra power system using DC load flow optimisation, market power index, and multi-plant monopoly analysis. The simulations include generation and transmission constraints to represent network constraints. This research is the first to analyse the Sumatra power system using imperfect (Cournot) competition modelling. Furthermore, this study is the first kind to optimise the mix and structure of the Sumatra generation power market. The guidelines and methodology in this research can be implemented in other countries characterised by a monopoly electricity utility company.

Abstract:
In an electricity market cleared by merit-order economic dispatch we identify necessary and sufficient conditions under which the market outcomes supported by pure strategy Nash equilibria (NE) exist when generating companies (Gencos) game through continuously variable incremental cost (IC) block offers. A Genco may own any number of units, each unit having multiple blocks with each block being offered at a constant IC.
Next, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) scheme devoid of approximations or iterations is developed to identify all possible NE. The MILP scheme is systematic and general but computationally demanding for large systems. Thus, an alternative significantly faster lambda-iterative approach that does not require the use of MILP was also developed.
Once all NE are found, one critical question is to identify the one whose corresponding gaming strategy may be considered by all Gencos as being the most rational. To answer this, this thesis proposes the use of a measure based on the potential profit gain and loss by each Genco for each NE. The most rational offer strategy for each Genco in terms of gaming or not gaming that best meets their risk/benefit expectations is the one corresponding to the NE with the largest gain to loss ratio.
The computation of all NE is tested on several systems of up to ninety generating units, each with four incremental cost blocks. These NE are then used to examine how market power is influenced by market parameters, specifically, the number of competing Gencos, their size and true ICs, as well as the level of demand and price cap.

The purpose of the thesis is twofold. The first objective is to illustrate the philosophy of Cesare Beccaria through the study of his articles on II caffe and his major work On crimes and punishments. The author presents a conceptual and practical solution to two problems: the administration of justice and the foundation of law. The second objective of the thesis is to retrace the steps of the international spread of his thought in France and the Anglo-Saxon world: France is only concerned with the administration of justice; England is responsive to both the concepts of the Italian scholar through William Blackstone (justice) and Jeremy Bentham (law). Bentham finds in the theory of the social contract of Beccaria the principle of Utilitarianism, a social philosophy that he will develop. The Founding Fathers of the United States will be sensitive to both aspects of the thought of the Milanese author, directly and through Blackstone's and Bentham's works.

Abstract:
Gene evolution is important in several areas, not least the understanding of thehuman body. Since the time of Darwin, researchers have visualized evolution withrooted binary trees. Hence, genes evolve constrained to how species have evolvedand that relationship is interesting to understand and explore. To solve this, onemethod is to infer the gene tree into the species tree, a so called reconciliation, butvisualizing reconciled trees with classical binary trees often results in clutteredvisualizations that quickly become difficult to understand. Therefore, in this thesisI present a new visualization method, Genvo, for reconciled phylogenies, and definea simple tree layout algorithm. I also present a problem characterization for thedomain-specific tasks, performed when working with gene evolution visualizations.A prototype of Genvo is then studied in a small pair analytics study, where fivepairs of master students tested the developed a prototype of Genvo. The results areanalyzed compared to a workshop with three participants, all with prior knowledgein the field of gene evolution. The analysis indicates a faster understanding of thegene data in Genvo, most likely through the pre-attentive features.

Abstract:
This paper presents different kinds of arbitrage opportunities in deregulated power markets such as arbitrage between energy and ancillary service, arbitrage of bilateral contracts, and arbitrage between gas and power. STRATEGIST is a C++ software package that incorporates a probabilistic approach for the evaluation of composite reliability of generation, load forecast and fuel prices using different probability distributions. STRATEGIST analyses the risk and arbitrage opportunities in a deregulated power market. This package is to be used by GENCOs to maximize their profit as well as to hedge the GENCOs to against crucial loss of profit. A typical scenario for applying this package is a GENCO which tries to supply its native load and trade bilateral transactions and would be interested in determining the risk associated with different alternatives. STRATEGIST is designed based on a comprehensive analysis of various risks in a portfolio.

Abstract:
After a catastrophic failure that occurred in a 30-inch diameter cold reheat (CRH) steam line at the W. A. Parish Plant, Texas Genco requested that Stress Engineering Services, Inc. (SES) assist in determining the cause of the failure. The incident occurred at approximately 12:10 PM on July 15, 2003 and resulted in a catastrophic failure that scattered components around the plant in a radius of 1,200 feet. Reliant Resources and Texas Genco conducted their own failure investigation that involved metallographic examinations, inspection of the fracture surfaces, review of operating conditions at the time of failure, and studies related to the weld profile of the CRH line. Stress Engineering Services’ efforts included studies using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to address how droplet sizes from the attemperator might impact downstream behavior of the piping system. Follow-on work involved conducting a mock-up testing as well as field monitoring using high temperature strain gages, accelerometers, and thermocouples. The data obtained from the field monitoring efforts, along with process data provided by Texas Genco, were used to perform finite element analyses. The finite element work involved the calculation of static stresses as well as transient stresses generated by cycling of the attemperator (thermal stresses) and vibration of the line (mechanical stresses). Fracture mechanics was used to determine the times required for crack initiation and propagation to failure. The analysis and monitoring efforts clearly demonstrated the operating conditions that were required to produce the failure. Additionally, the failure reinforced the importance of regular inspection of piping systems; even those high energy piping systems such as the cold reheat lines not normally associated with catastrophic failures.
