Abstract:
Monsters fascinate us. From ancient folklore to contemporary digital games, they are at the core of the stories we tell. They reflect our fears, deepest desires, and the monstrosity hidden within ourselves. Monsters hold a mirror to our contemporary society and reveal who we truly are. This edited collection examines monsters and monstrosity in games and play. Monsters are a key feature of most games: we fight, kill, and eat them—and sometimes, we become them. However, monsters in games and play are not only entertaining but also a reflection of the monstrosity of our world. In this book, twen

Abstract:
This chapter argues that independence individualism, a form of individualism that is the object of decolonial feminist critique, is conceptually unnecessary for feminism, and in fact undermines transnational feminist praxis. Opposition to sexist oppression does not logically entail individualism. Adopting the specific form of individualism called “independence individualism,” which holds that individuals should be economically self-sufficient and that only chosen relationships are valuable is likely to worsen the gender division of labor and obscure the transition costs of feminist change. Abstract:
This chapter explores gendered dimensions of theological categories in nineteenth-century Christian thought, primarily in Germany. By defining religion as feeling, symbolized in feminine terms, theologians in this period embraced relationality and dependence as ideals for human life. By viewing the family as a model of religious community and a site for the adjudication and cultivation of political values, intellectuals sought alternatives to modern ‘fragmentation’ and processes of alienation and rationalization. Among feminist thinkers, debates over marriage and women’s emancipation raised ne

Abstract:
The feeding of human milk to socially and biologically unrelated infants is not a new phenomenon, but the Euroamerican values of individualism have generated expectations that mothers are individually responsible for feeding their own infants. Using a bio-communities of practice framework, this dynamic new analysis explores the emotional and material dimensions of the growing milk-sharing practice in the Global North and its implications for contemporary understandings of infant feeding in the United States. Ranging widely across themes of motherhood, gender and sociology, this is a compelling

Chapter 5 deals with the personal consequences of a posthuman subjectivity and the task of identity creation. In liquid modernity, risks and threats are becoming ever more global but remain systemic, while at the same time the solutions to these issues is relegated to the individual. The existence of a noticeable gap between society's insistence on individuality, autonomy, and self-assertion and the systemic risks to this claim, caused by a globalized flow of information, technology and politics, is thus the argument of the analysis of the video game BioShock. Informed by practices of women’s activism in India, this book proposes a feminist social justice framework to address the wide range of issues women face globally, including economic exploitation; sexist oppression; racial, ethnic, and caste oppression; and cultural imperialism. The feminist social justice framework provides an alternative to mainstream philosophical frameworks that analyze and promote gender justice globally: universal human rights, economic projects such as microfinance, and cosmopolitanism. These frameworks share a commitment to individualism and abstract universalism that

This chapter explores the reverberating impact of the Vietnamese female rape victim in Casualties of War (1989). The film concerns a patrol of GIs who, during a reconnaissance mission, kidnap, rape, and murder an innocent Vietnamese girl, a story that is embedded in another story about how one of them, Private Eriksson (Michael J. Fox), who tried unsuccessfully to prevent these events, eventually brings the others to justice. The film invites audiences, irrespective of gender, into more diffusely feeling territory. It moves beyond melodrama's universalizing symbol of female victimhood. Haptic

Abstract:
Goethe’s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre served as a touchstone for major philosophical and literary figures of his age (including, among many others, Schiller, Fichte, Hegel, Schlegel, Schleiermacher, and Novalis). But it has received far less attention in both disciplines (especially in English-language scholarship) than either Goethe’s Sorrows of Young Werther or Elective Affinities. This volume takes up the question of what Goethe’s long and rather complicated novel is doing and how it engages with problems and themes of human life more generally, including issues of individuality, development,
