Latest epidemiological data suggests that 1.5 billion adults worldwide are obese or overweight. Excess weight and adipocyte hypertrophy have long been associated with contributing to low-grade systemic inflammation through elevated adipokine secretion. These increased endocrine signals further augment the metabolic dysfunction related to the presence of obesity. A chronic exposure to obesity mediated inflammation is also suggested to be responsible for progression of renal pathology and eventual end-stage organ failure. Abstract:
This paper explores the role of gender heterogeneity in the social diffusion of obesity among adolescents and its policy implications. We propose a generalized linear social interaction model which allows for gender-dependent heterogeneity in peer effects through the channel of social synergy. We estimate the model using data on adolescent Body Mass Index and network-based interactions. Our results show that peer effects are gender-dependent, and male students are particularly responsive to the weight of their female friends. Our simulations indicate that female-tailored interventions are like

Abstract:
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has been the cause of growing concern in Europe and beyond in recent years. The European Union (EU) introduced the Daphne project in order to prevent GBV against females, such as sexual exploitation and human trafficking in 1997 (Montoya, 2009). With that project, the EU sought to establish a comprehensive approach to deal with violence against women and children in European society. The Council of Europe’s Convention in Istanbul (2011) on preventing GBV against women and girls was the first legally binding regional instrument to address different forms of violence,

Abstract:
Gender is a traditionally under researched dimension in scholarship on climate and security. However, as recent research has noted, it is a variable that cannot only shape how different groups of individuals are affected by climate-related security risks. Gendered norms and power structures can also increase or mitigate the likelihood of climate-related security risks. This SIPRI Insights paper contributes to the growing body of research on gender, climate and security by analyzing the gender dimensions of the four pathways of climate insecurity featured in past SIPRI studies: (a) livelihood d

Abstract:
At Busara, we have been working with different Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania since 2015 to understand how communities engage with centers of non-political power(namely religious leaders/organizations, advocacy groups, and community based organizations). Through this engagement, we were looking to learn what drives civic engagement and how CSOs and activist groups can leverage behavioral knowledge to promote increased civic engagement and participation.
