Abstract:

The Changeable hawk-eagle (Brontok eagle) is a protected bird species. It is one of the most frequently hunted and traded birds in Indonesia. The processes of being traded changes this bird natural behaviour. Therefore, a rehabilitation effort to return the eagle’s behaviour to conform to its natural habits is needed. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is to release the changeable hawk-eagle back into its natural habitat. In conservation and breeding programs, efforts to determine the sex of eagles to be released are very important to help increase the population of changeable hawk-eagles in their habitat by looking at the sex ratio. At the present, sex determination at the Kamojang Conservation Eagle Center (Pusat Konservasi Elang Kamojang or PKEK) uses the morphometric method. This research used the DNA sexing method with primers 2550F and 2718R to determine the sex of Changeable hawk-eagles in PKEK by extracting DNA from blood samples of 30 eagles. Comparison of DNA sexing results and morphometric data showed differences. This proves that DNA sexing, is suitable in determining changeable hawk-eagles’ sex.

Abstract:

Vent sexing of one-day-old chicks in commercial hatcheries has long been common practice and can be highly accurate. However, there are circumstances when this technique is not applicable such as smaller breeds, non-domestic birds, or where is the necessity of precise sexing. In this study we present a simple and reliable method for fast gender determination in selected Galliformes for which phenotypic determination of sex is difficult until maturity. Four species were tested: two commercial species – chicken (Gallus gallus) and turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), and two game birds – common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and wood grouse (Tetraro urogallus). DNA was tested with universal single-pair primers polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detecting W chromosome specific sequence yielding a single band of length specific for each species. The method was developed with regards to time consumption and cost-effectiveness giving results in less than two hours. The method may also be used for early sexing in commercial chicken and turkey flocks as well as sexing of smaller game birds flocks or for research laboratories when rapid sexing of selected Galliformes cells is required.

Abstract:

This article presents an elaboration of the protocol for the method of sexing wild birds based on the polymorphism of the CHD gene using P2/P8 primer for Common Pheasant – Phasianus colchicus (Linnaeus, 1758; Galliformes, Phasianidae); Silver Lofur or Silver Pheasant – Lophura nycthemera (Linnaeus, 1758; Galliformes, Phasianidae), Budgerigar – Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw, 1805; Psittaciformes, Psittacidae), Herring Gull – Larus argentatus (Pontoppidan, 1763; Charadriiformes, Laridae), and White Stork – Ciconia ciconia (Linnaeus, 1758; Ciconiiformes, Ciconiidae). Blood samples were taken from Common Pheasant, Silver Pheasant and White Stork using the “drop of blood on paper” method. For the Budgerigar and the Herring Gull, DNA was isolated from the feather follicle. To isolate DNA, a commercial NeoPrep 100 DNA reagent kit (Neogen, Ukraine) was used. Primers P2/P8 were used for PCR; PCR was performed using GenPac PCR Core reagents (Neogen, Ukraine). We selected the optimal amount of Tag polymerase, the amount of DNA and primers and, according to the amount of reagents, set acceptable amplification modes and electrophoresis agarose gel percentage. Prior to PCR, additional DNA gel electrophoresis purification is proposed, which increases the percentage of positive sex determination results. It was found that the ideal mixture for the 5 bird species was an amplification mixture (total volume 20 µL, containing 1 U Tag polymerase, 100 ng DNA and 0.6 µM of each primer). The amplified CHD-Z fragment of Common and Silver pheasants is of ~340 n. p., CHD-W ~360 n. p. Herring Gull and Budgerigar have ~350 n. p. of CHD-Z length, and ~400 n. p. of CHD-W length, White Stork has its CHD-Z of ~ 370 n. p. long. It is advisable to investigate the genome of the experimental bird species using horizontal electrophoresis in agar’s gel with the concentration of 5%, which makes it possible to clearly visualize the female genotype. The universal protocol of the method of sex determination based on polymorphism of the CHD gene for the 5 studied bird species is described. These results of the study led to the conclusion that for the simultaneous sexing of several species of birds, it is advisable to develop a unified protocol for determining the status of the CHD gene, with the aim of clarifying the gender, as well as new approaches in ornithology and ecology aimed at determining interspecific differences associated with gene polymorphism. Identification of differences in fragment sizes may be useful for identifying the species in cases when birds form mixed pairings for taxonomic and phylogenetic comparisons.

Abstract:

Casas Grandes Medio–period (A.D. 1200–1450) human effigies are unique in the North American Southwest in that they depict primary and secondary sexual traits, making determination of sex and gender roles possible. Here, we build on previous discussions by considering the importance of depictions of clothing (e.g., belts and sashes), personal adornments (e.g., necklaces and bracelets), facial decorations, and other aspects of dress. We find that Medio-period symbolism for males and females was based on gender complementary that combined the productive, reproductive, and ritual activities of men and women within a single symbolic and ritual system. Some clothing styles are found on both males and females (e.g., arm bands), but there are also sex-based differences. Women wear low horizontal belts across their hips, whereas men primarily wear sandals and elaborate headbands. Aspects of dress also appear to be continued from previous cultures such as the Classic Mimbres (A.D. 1000–1150) and continued into historic northern Mexican and southwestern groups (e.g., headgear and some sandal types). Ultimately, we find that males have more elaborate dress and are associated with a specific set of ritually important symbols. Females are associated with cloud/fertility symbolism, sternal decorations, and birds.

Abstract:

Nutrition is the one of the most important factors of the formation of a state of health of the person that requires the solution of two main objectives: determination of main population tendencies in the dietary patterns (DP) and the study of the influence of consumption of certain feedstuffs, products and groups of products on a state of health of the person. Within multicenter epidemiological research of the ESSE-RF the analysis of DP of the population of the Kemerovo region (1628 people aged of 25-64 years) and their association with indices of cardiovascular health is carried out. For grouping (determination of DP) frequencies of consumption of 13 groups of foodstuff the factorial analysis were used (a method of main components). The characteristic of commitment to the allocated DP in various age, gender and social-economic groups of the population, and also association of commitment to DP with factors of cardiovascular risk and some cardiovascular diseases is given. There were selected four DP types explaining of 44.8% of the structure of the frequency of consumption of foodstuff. In three out of four DPs there were revealed associations with the age and gender structure and education level of the population. According to two DPs multiple associations with indices of the cardiovascular health were noted: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, the waist circumference, the level of cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, presence of arterial hypertension, obesity, hypertriglyceridemia. The obtained associations allow to characterize “dairy” DP (high frequency of consumption of milk, sour cream, cottage cheese and cheese) as favorable, and “meat” DP (high frequency of consumption of meat, fish and seafood, birds) as adverse in respect of cardiovascular health that correspond to results of other investigations. The performed analysis has allowed characterize food preferences of the population of the Siberian region as in general on population, and on age, gender and social-economic groups. The obtained associations of two out of four DP with indices of cardiovascular health correspond to results of other Russian and foreign investigations.

The American Crow has always been a much scrutinized bird in North America but, since the emergence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in North America in 1999, public health authorities’ attention to it has been raised another notch. In Québec, like everywhere else in North America, part of the WNV surveillance programme was based on detection of WNV mortality in crow populations. During the summer of the 2005 surveillance season, we followed an age and gender determination protocol, as well as a morphological measurement protocol, on dead crows sent in for WNV status determination, to improve our knowledge of the crow population in Québec. Statistical analysis of the measurements revealed that age and gender were important factors in the morphological characterisation of the American Crow. Bill depth and head-to-bill length appeared as the most important morphological variables for gender prediction through a discriminant function analysis. We also realized that, in adult age groups, our WNV positive carcasses had lower mean weights than carcasses that tested negative for WNV, in adult age groups.Depuis toujours, la corneille d’Amérique est un oiseau très étudié, mais, depuis l’apparition du virus du Nil occidental (VNO) en Amérique du Nord en 1999, l’attention des autorités en santé publique sur cet oiseau a encore augmenté. Au Québec, comme ailleurs en Amérique du Nord, une part importante du programme de surveillance pour la détection du VNO a été basée sur la détection des mortalités liées au VNO dans les populations de corneilles. Pour améliorer notre connaissance de cette espèce au Québec, nous avons mis à profit la récolte des carcasses au cours de l’été 2005 dans le cadre du programme de surveillance en instaurant un protocole de détermination de l’âge, du genre ainsi qu’une prise des mesures morphologiques sur ces mêmes carcasses. L’analyse statistique des résultats a montré qu’à la fois l’âge et le genre étaient des facteurs importants dans la caractérisation morphologique de la corneille d’Amérique. À l’aide de l’analyse discriminante, il est apparu que la profondeur du bec ainsi que la distance tête-bec étaient les mesures les plus importantes pour prédire le genre de l’oiseau. Nos analyses nous ont également permis d’observer que, dans les groupes d’oiseaux adultes, les carcasses positives pour le VNO étaient en moyenne moins lourdes que les carcasses négatives.

Abstract:

Human scent has been the focal point of diverse scientific interests and research initiatives for the past several years. The knowledge gained about its composition has favored the advancement of multiple disciplines, and promoted the development of a wide variety of applications. Among these applications is the use of human scent as a resource for Forensic investigations, where scent profiles are often used as evidence to associate individuals to the scene of a crime. The characteristic nature of individual human scent has enabled this type of evidence to be used as a biometric tool for the differentiation of subjects. Nevertheless, the present study discusses a new perspective towards human scent's role and application in Forensic investigations. The foundation of this new perspective consists of employing human scent’s biometric quality to classify individuals using common traits. In this research study, underarm and hand odor samples were collected from Caucasian, Hispanic and East Asian individuals, of both genders. Subjects were also organized into 3 different age groups: 18-30, 35-50 and 55+ years. Headspace Solid Phase Micro-extraction Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was used to create individual scent profiles for the evaluation of subject classification by age, gender and race/ethnicity. Individual classification was assessed through the identification of qualitative and quantitative patterns in the volatile organic compound (VOC) constituents that characterize human scent. Principal Component and Linear Discriminant analyses of the collected scent profiles, led to the identification and validation of characteristic VOC marker combinations for age, gender and race/ethnicity. Statistical analysis facilitated group classification and differentiation on the basis of these traits. Moreover, this study also evaluated the use of solvent extraction as a complementary technique to HS-SPME for human scent analysis. Findings from this assessment revealed that the simultaneous consideration of data from both extraction techniques favors an enhancement of the classification of subjects by means of human scent. The discoveries achieved in this study represent a significant step for human scent as a forensic tool. The outcome of this research has cleared a new path for further human scent investigation, and highlighted its further relevance to forensic applications.

Social Identity Theory proposes that individuals derive part of their identity and their social identity, through their membership in social groups. In order to derive a positive social identity, they attempt to compare themselves more favourably in comparison to members of groups they do not belong to, which may at times leads to discrimination against out-group members. Due to South Africa‟s history of race- and gender-based oppression, it is likely that race and gender are two particularly salient group memberships and that gender- and racebased discrimination are thus particularly prominent. Research has shown that discrimination in the workplace has negative effects, which result in reduced productivity as well as reduced employee engagement and wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which employees show a preference for co-workers from their own gender and racial groups and to establish whether their racial or gender bias is stronger.

Abstract:

This research dealt with considerations which have underlain the determination of earnings in post-socialist Hungary, as well as policy-makers' opinions on criteria which ought to influence the pay distribution. The focus was thereby on the value positions adopted, and on their likely consequences for gender inequality in pay. The main method used to elicit these norms was interviews with management and trade union representatives of the 'light' and the 'heavy' industry. The interview schedule and data analysis were informed by various theoretical approaches to earnings disparities. Theoretical propositions commonly advanced in economic and sociological literature dealing with gender inequalities in employment were covered; and principles which may influence decisions on a particular distribution of earnings were identified and included. The data collected on this basis required some insight into the nature of industrial relations in Hungary's past and present. This facilitated a better understanding of the particular views advanced by trade unionists and management. The study revealed that few signs existed of any overt and systematic devaluation of women's skills and qualifications. However, the wish to adhere to 'traditional arrangements' in the distribution of jobs and earnings proved a central theme. This coincided with an explicit or implicit approval of the (male) breadwinner model; with the proposed ideal of a primarily domestic role for women; and with particular ways in which job aspects often found in men's and women's work were evaluated, and compensated for. Inferences from our data were made for some aspects of the identified principles of earnings determination: in the light of the data, the specific experiences of women due to their different working conditions and their double-role were found to have been neglected by these principles, which claim to provide generally applicable grounds for the determination of earnings levels. Suggestions were made about the issues which the principles would have to incorporate in order to remove their gender bias.

Abstract:

Estimation of age at death from dentine from upper first premolar teeth using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for the separation of D- and L- forms of aspartic acid in minute quantities of dentine has been successfully established in Kuwait and is sensitive enough for practical use. The method was shown to be accurate to +/- 1.2 years. The affect upon racemization of aspartic acid in teeth buried at depths of 0.5M and 2.0M over a 10 month period demonstrated that in desert conditions in the Middle East racemization continued providing results less constant than in teeth not buried. A standard error of +/- 2.3 years was obtained for teeth buried at 0.5M and +/- 3.0 years at 2.0M. The D/L ration was significantly different between buried and not buried teeth. These results demonstrated continued postmortem racemization in the warm soil and the modification of the racemization rate is discussed in the context of prolonged exposure to body temperature, relatively high pH and low humidity. The findings are important since estimation of the age of an unknown body recovered from the desert must now take into consideration temperature, pH, soil humidity at the burial depth (as measured at the site) and also the length of time for which the teeth may have been buried. Further studies now require to be undertaken in conditions where the soil and climate are very different in order that the results of racemization estimates world wide can be interpreted accurately. The trace element experiments while demonstrating an accumulation of most elements with time did not provide reliable information about the age of the subject at the time of death. The variables and problems concerned are discussed in detail. Although through using both racemization and trace element methods it was possible to indicate a probability of gender in any tooth examined the degree of accuracy proved to be poor and it is anticipated that DNA analysis will be much more useful. The future role for tooth pulps in DNA identification is briefly discussed.

Abstract:

In intensive production, freshly hatched cockerels are culled in the layer hatchery (7 billion males each year), On the other hand, for meat production rearing female birds has not economic benefits because of male broiler chicks have a faster growth rate and better feed efficiency than females. In this regards several methods are being developed for sex determination in the chick embryo during the incubation period. But these methods need to be rapid, cost-efficient, and suitable practical for commercial use. Additionally, sex determination should be done before pain perception has evolved in chick embryos. Biotechnology by in ovo technique to sex determination of between male and female chicks or sex reversal could improve production and eliminate ethical dilemmas for poultry industries. In birds, the differentiation of embryonic gonads is not determined by genetic gender with the certainty that occurs in mammals and can be affected by early treatment with a steroid hormone. During the development of the chick embryo, the genotype of the zygote determines the nature of the gonads, which then caused male or female phenotype. The differentiation of gonads during the period called the "critical period of sexual differentiation" is accompanied by the beginning of secretion of sexual hormones. Namely, any change in the concentration of steroid hormones during the critical period affects the structure of the gonads. Many synthetic anti-aromatases such as federazole and non-synthetic in plants, mushrooms, and fruits containing natural flavonoids have been used in the experiments in ovo injection of anti-aromatase had no negative effect on the growth performance of sexual reversal female chickens. In conclusion, administration of an aromatase inhibitor causes testicular growth in the genetic female gender, and estrogen administration leads to the production of the left ovotestis in the genetic male gender. Therefore, in the early stages of embryonic development, sexual differentiation can be affected by changing the ratio of sexual hormones. In this review, effects of some substances applied by in ovo injection technique on sex reversal and performance in chicks.

Abstract:

The aim of the study of the lifestyles of women leaders was to investigate the social phenomenon of an increasing trend in the number of female leaders in all areas of society. However, the gendered functional burden of fulfilling the role of a woman as the keeper of the family home remains the same, which sets the stage for research into the determinants of healthy lifestyles for female leaders. The methodological socio-psychological approach of the study is ensured by applying the testing method (to study the dominant behavioural pattern of female leaders). Moreover, the age-based ranging method was embraced in the form of analysing distinctive features of female leadership behaviours at a certain age in life. Furthermore, the method of scaling and defining the expressiveness of traits of a particular behavioural pattern was applied. The findings were processed via a comparative analysis of features of female manager behaviour types in the context of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In accordance with objective data, the authors are able to state that the predominant pattern (according to the Friedman and Rosenman test) of female leaders is type ‘A’ behaviour – this pattern determines the development of psychosomatic pathology. The basic conclusion demonstrating the novelty of the findings reflects the analysis of the trends in psychological characteristics of female managers of modern businesses as follows: female managers have internalised Type ‘A’ behavioural patterns that promote the use of health resources with the maximum expenditure of psychological resources and the absence of even minimal energy-saving tendencies. The behavioural patterns identified allowed us to identify recommendations for female leaders for healthy lifestyles.

The stories of these village women offer unique insights into women’s aspirations, the challenges they have encountered and their achievements across multiple scales and domains, illustrating the lived complexities of women in rural Indonesia, particularly those from vulnerable groups. The stories shared highlight women’s own pathways of change and their resilience and determination often in the face of resistance from their families and communities, to ultimately reduce rural gender inequities and bolster gender inclusiveness. The stories also illustrate the important role CSOs—those that are focused on gender inclusion and facilitating grassroots women’s agency and empowerment—can play in supporting women’s voice and agency as they undertake this journey.
