Abstract:
Sexdiscrimination is the disadvantaging of a member or members of one sex over a member or members of the other because of their sex. Although either men or women may be the victims of sex discrimination, throughout history and in most societies, women have been the victims. Discrimination against women is usually predicated on the claim that men and women are biologically different, and that these differences justify the lesser status of women. Regarding the sex/gender distinction as a significant advance over the view that one's gender is determined by one's sex, feminists encouraged women and men to become well-integrated androgynous persons; to mix and match within themselves a variety of feminine and masculine personality traits and behaviours, thereby demonstrating that anatomy does not constitute destiny.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the conditions and processes that give rise to gender discrimination in the workplace, impeding women’s career advancement. It explores how descriptive and prescriptive gender stereotypes—through distinct mechanisms—promote inequities in the selection, promotion, and evaluation of women. The paper examines how descriptive gender stereotypes, which describe what men and women are like, encourage gender discriminatory behavior by contributing to the expectation that women are ill equipped to succeed in traditionally male positions. It also considers how prescriptive gender stereotypes, which prescribe what men and women should be like, encourage gender discriminatory behavior by spurring disapproval and social penalties for women who behave in stereotype-inconsistent ways—whether explicitly or by merely being successful in roles considered to be male-typed. The chapter discusses existing research, considers the conditions that minimize or exacerbate gender discrimination, and identifies questions for future study.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the doctrinal and historical controversy surrounding the ordination of women in Buddhist traditions. In the contemporary period, Theravāda female monastic orders have attempted to create a female monastic order (bhikkhunī order) in Thailand. The Thai government and its monks have rejected such efforts. In addition to official resistance, people have exhibited violent backlashes to such attempts. While both sides of the polemic provide doctrinal justifications for their arguments, these justifications do not remove the harm caused to women occluded from ordination or those ridiculed and threatened once they ordain. This chapter tracks the violence of the gender discrimination through both monastic practices and the larger Thai society. Finally, it reviews three Buddhists justifications for gendered violence through Buddhist doctrine.
