Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to examine how respondents who self identify as transgender or genderqueer experience avatar creation systems in digital games. In the wake of GamerGate, gender has become a more prevalent topic of discussion, as such, this thesis seeks to survey transgender and genderqueer people in order to gain a better insight into their their experiences with avatar creation in games, and do they perceive the status quo of current avatar creation systems to be in need of change? If so, how? The results of the survey shows that the respondents use avatar creation systems as a means to experiment in a safe environment with aspects of their identity expression, and to improve avatar creation systems, more options need to be added for diverse body types and non-binary identities.

Abstract:
Amidst global cultural shifts towards gender diversity, genderqueer fashion models have emerged as an atypical case in a largely heteronormative fashion industry. This project examines the work of four gender diverse models as cultural intermediaries of gender in visual culture. Using methods of interpretive analysis this project provides insights into the genderqueer fashion model's capacity to make social and political agendas visible. Also, the project documents how they facilitate social, cultural and political discussion and influences on the evolving notions of gender, fashion and beauty through their bodily practice.

Saltzburg, Nicole L. "Developing a Model of Transmasculine Identity." Scholarly Repository, 2010. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/432.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional psychotherapy with transgender clients has focused on helping gender dysphoric individuals assume an "opposite" gender role. However, recently, there have been calls for trans-positive therapy focusing on the exploration and affirmation of alternative gender identifications. The majority of the research on transgender identity has been conducted with male-to-female (MTF) identified, or transfeminine, individuals. Comparatively little attention has been given to the experience of female-to-male (FTM) identified, or transmasculine, individuals. The primary goal of this study was to explore constructs and identify underlying themes that transmasculine people use in constructing their gender identities in order to develop a structural model of transmasculine identity. Broadly speaking, results showed that transmasculine identity may be conceptualized on a continuum from an essentialist binary perspective to a constructivist non-binary perspective. This is reflected in the language the individual uses to self-identify - including identity labels, proper names and pronouns. Individuals define, experience, and embody transmasculine identities differently depending on a number of inter-related constructs including: (1) current stage of identity development and past transmasculine identity development events, (2) conceptions of masculinity and femininity, (3) context, and (4) sexuality. Further, if one of these constructs shifts it usually influences the others. Implications for theory, practice, and future research directions are discussed.

Jacobsson, Joline.

Full text
Abstract:

Balius, Ana. "“I Want to Be Who I Am”: Stories of Rejecting Binary Gender." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7262.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, in academic literature—sociological and otherwise—surrounding the daily lives of LGBT+ people, people who reject binary gender are very marginally represented. In this study, I specifically seek to understand the way my participants articulate their sense of their gender identities through the stories they tell of their experiences. This study attempts to answer the following questions: What are the stories of gender identity construction for people who reject binary gender? How do they understand the ways they are held accountable to binary gender in the day-to-day? How do they perceive and make meaning of gender in their lives? Through ten in-depth interviews with participants accessed through online groups and snowball sampling, this project reinforces gender surveillance and accountability theories such as West and Zimmerman's. Although participants largely identified the root of their feelings about gender as within their selves, the stories they told about their experiences of gender revealed that interactions with others were important and thus have a large effect on their lives. This indicates that these interactions with others where participants are held accountable to binary gender do have an impact on the ways they construct their gender and selves but because this has been such a consistent part of their lives, participants perceive this as innate to their selves and private feelings.

Abstract:
Background: A transgender person is a person who partially or not at all identifies with the gender that the individual was assigned at birth. Transgender people are a vulnerable group in society with inferior physical and mental health than the average population; meanwhile, the group seeks contact with healthcare in lower frequency than the average population. Aim: This study aimed to illuminate how binary and non-binary transgender people experienced the contact with primary care, since the primary care is the first instance in the Swedish-health-care-system. Method: A qualitative study, with a strategic selection of six individual interviews. Results: The transgender people in the study stated that they were unwilling to seek contact with primary care, as a result of earlier bad meetings. The informants experienced deficits when it came to transgender knowledge in the primary healthcare, and that they many times felt forced to educate the personnel. Furthermore, the participants expressed thoughts that their transgender identity could have a bad impact on their personal treatment and care. The strengths in the primary care consisted in personnel who did not assume gender identity, used open ended questions and abandoned binary gender assumptions. To reduce anxiety and stress there was a wish for more support and continuity in the care. Finally the participants requested LGBT-education in healthcare training programs as well as for the personnel in the sector. Conclusion: To enable improvement of transgender people´s health, the primary healthcare needs to increase their knowledge about transgender identities.

Matthews, Evan. "Making Space: Disorientating bodies in trans and queer spaces of support." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Gender Studies, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8817.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores young people’s transgenderings through negotiations of language, bodies and experiences of different peer and community-based support spaces in Aotearoa New Zealand. It critically examines what ‘support’ means for young people in relation to developing subjectivities and embodiments shaped by being both young and transgender/ gender non-conforming. While these perspectives are varied, I argue that the production of community and peer-based support for those who are both young and transgender or gender non-conforming has been undergoing a period of significant change, reflecting queer and postmodern shifts which have worked to re-conceptualise the ways queer and transgender communities and peers are imagined, incorporating a greater inclusive focus on diversity. Utilising Sara Ahmed’s concept of queer phenomenology and post-structuralist theory, the thesis thinks beyond binary approaches to gender and support, to consider support and gender non-conformity through the process of ‘disorientation’. Throughout this project both ‘gender’ and ‘support’ are positioned as being subjective, embodied and discursive knowledges and actions, represented in multiple and contradictory ideas, identities and expressions of the different participants. The study utilises in-depth qualitative interviews with participants who are young people (aged 16-30 years) and support providers and developers of transgender/queer based support in Aotearoa New Zealand. Working with young people and support providers, this research provides an analysis of support development for transgender and gender non-conforming young people in Aotearoa New Zealand, arguing that all participants in support (both providers and recipients) are shaping its provision.

Antonelli, Valentina. "Genere e identità: analisi comparativa tra l'inglese e l'italiano." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2017. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/12696/.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to be impossible, to examine how the socially intelligible can come to exist. This is done through the concept of sex/gender, as sex/gender has such a determining place in the production of what can be understood as human, it also has the properties to shed light on the possibility to be and exist beyond the socially intelligible. In this paper I will interview and analyze how four genderqueer people understand themselves and their identity in relation to the phenomenon sex/gender. Through Karen Barad’s concept of posthumanist performativity and her conceptualization of phenomena and intra-action I understand sex/gender, not as entities, but as phenomena of ever changing and ever intra-acting agents. The study suggests that the limitations of the concept of sex/gender can be addressed through an understanding of the body as itself a web of intra-actions, that is, the body as a phenomenon.

Abstract:
This thesis paper gives a brief history of the vampire narrative and its role in representing the collective anxieties of an age as well as serving as a metaphor for oppressed peoples. It uses Bram Stoker’s Dracula and J. Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla as historical examples of how the vampire adapts to suit issues of the day such as reverse colonization and female sexuality, respectively. The latter part of this paper speculates on the future role of the vampire in literature and proposes that the vampire could be used to discuss transgender issues as well as challenge the gender binary. It addresses the suitability of the vampire narrative in particular for representing gender as a spectrum using the lenses of Foucault’s heterotopias, Kristeva’s abject, and Freud’s uncanny and pulls examples of early evidence of this trend from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.

Abstract:
Aim. To highlight how girlfags and guydykes describe their identities and their experience and interpretation of the identity labels. Background and previous studies. The sexual minority identity of girlfags and guydykes are sometimes perceived as provocative in their contradictory labels. There is little to no previous research on the identities and what is known is mostly presented on internet blogs and forums. The identities seemingly involve aspects on sexual orientation, gender and sexual practice. Research related to sexual minorities, non-normative sex, LGBT and the risk of ill-health with identifying as a sexual minority is presented. Method. Semi-structured interviews in a method of choice was applied to this study so as to ease contact with a sexual minority group. Participants were sought through a Facebook © forum, with a total of eleven interviews with two guydykes and nine girlfags, through video call (2), phone call (1), in person (1), email (6), email with sound files (1). The data was analysed with content analysis. Results and analysis. The results were extensive and had to be delimited. The results were analysed in a sexual constructionist setting using the concept of the heterosexual matrix (Butler, 1990) and the concepts of gender/sex sexuality and nurturance and eroticism presented in van Anders’ (2015) Sexual Configurations Theory (SCT). Three main categories were presented; A play on gender, Sexuality and Orientation, and Identity. Conclusions. There is pride portrayed in the girlfag and guydykes identities. The identity breaks norms regarding gender and sexuality and even sexual orientation within an LGBT context. The results indicate that further research on transgender issues and relational and social aspects of the identities is needed. Keywords: autoandrophilia, gender identity, genderqueer, girlfag, guydyke, homosexuality, LGBT, non-normative, sexual minorities, lesbian man, queer.

Abstract:
Abstract Natural Hysteria... is a trans-disciplinary practice led investigation which documents the process of production of a cycle of text based performances -rituals, street actions, theatrical presentations, and video presentations, songs and workshops. It is an artistic response to the deterioration of our environment and the attacks on cultural and biological diversity being carried out by a capitalist system based on the accumulation of wealth at all costs which is leading us to the border of an ecological collapse. It proceeds through an analyses of other dissident artistic practices which share a queer, feminist postcolonial or ecological perspective linking them to the concepts explored in my work in order to contextualise it in the expanded field of the contemporary arts. The alternative "hysteria" that forms the conceptual basis of this project has its beginnings in the dawn of the modern age and traces a history of domination of those "others": focusing mainly on women, gender and sexual dissidents, people of colour and animals. The exploitation of natural and human resources is a consequence of a worldview based on the establishment of binary oppositions that allow the "other" to be classified and dominated. For example: man / woman, white / black, hetero / homosexual, culture / nature. The construction of these "others" - the "feminine", the "native", the "queer", "nature" - excludes these subjects from the construction of a master identity that, nevertheless, depends on these categories for its existence. In the Renaissance the fields of the sciences and the humanities were not separated. The mechanistic view of the world had not completely overcome pagan beliefs in magic and in a spiritual force which resides in all beings. This vision was a relic of the pre-Christian era and would finally be eradicated by the united forces of State and Church through the processes of the Inquisition, the witch hunts, colonization and the new religion of "Science". All of these processes have produced a huge change in our relationship with nature, currently seen as a totally inert entity. Nature is no longer part of our being and has became nothing more than raw material. Colonisation continues today under a neoliberal politics which uses the concept of development to requisition territory from indigenous people in order to exploit its natural resources. This is justified by qualifying these people as primitive because their way of life is based on living in equilibrium with nature. The function of a politically engaged artistic practise is to challenge the notion that no alternative exists to the current system. The theoretical and artistic framework of this investigation has led to the development of a performative alter ego, the transgender shaman Geyserbird, and to the configuration of a series of performances which included participatory rituals, installations with presence and the queer appropriation of abandoned industrial spaces. The transgender shaman is a spiritual being who goes beyond the limitations of the binary gender system and connects to indigenous cultures. The deployment of this figure in a contemporary context, invites the public to imagine other possibilities for themselves and for our society

Abstract:

Laing, Kelsie (Daley). "Towards minoritarian genderqueer politics: potentials of Deleuzoguattarian molecular genderqueer subjectivities and bodies." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3347.

Full text
Abstract:
There is great potential for the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in the realm of queer theory, and specifically discussions of gender variance. Their critique of psychiatry, capitalism and the unitary subject in Anti-Oedipus (1983) fits well within the current discussions surrounding transgender and genderqueer experiences including Gender Identity Disorder classifications, the commodification of queer culture, and the challenges put forth to our the "modern subject" by the fluidity of genderqueer. Yet strangely, there has not yet been an explicit, in-depth Deleuzoguattarian ontological reading of genderqueer. This thesis helps to foster such discussions by focusing on Deleuzoguattarian understandings of subjectivity, bodies and politics and how they relate to both gender and genderqueer. Through a method of involution, gender is transformed into molecular gender, into a productive, immanently relational, multiplicitous gender that has substantial implications for gender(queer) politics and activism.

Pinter, Gene. "ThemTech: Digital Menstrual Tracking Practices Among Transgender, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse Users." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/223609.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an evaluation of digital menstrual tracking practices among transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse users, broadening the scope of sociotechnical studies (STS) to investigate how disaggregated populations affect the producer-consumer metric. Utilising the collective methodological framework pioneered by Frigga Haug and the West German Women’s Socialist Association in the 1980s, participants were invited to “live historically” by narrativising their memories related to menstrual tracking and their transgender identity. From their stories, three key areas were identified as platforms upon which transgender users are both reinforcing and disrupting existing understandings of self-tracking. Through a deconstructionist reading of configuration, an examination of how self-tracking conflates juxtaposed identities, and an investigation into the collaborative efforts of transgender users, technology companies and medical professionals, this thesis offers an alternate understanding of the self in relation to actor-network theory.

Manning, Elizabeth Joy. "Who are the men in 'Men who have sex with men'?" Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2512.

Full text
Abstract:
The term 'men who have sex with men' (MSM) as commonly used by HIV/AIDS researchers and policy makers is said to describe an obvious group of men. Or does it? While MSM disrupts the homosexual/heterosexual dichotomy through focusing on sexual practices rather than sexual identity, it remains entrenched in binary understandings of sex and gender. Influenced by queer and trans theories, a genderqueer methodology is employed to examine what discourses are deployed when MSM are categorized as a seemingly homogenous group. Who are the “men” in MSM and what are the material consequences of MSM discourse in HIV/AIDS work? Guided by feminist poststructural and Foucauldian theories, this study highlights how MSM discourse functions to exclude trans, intersex, and other non-normative sexed and gendered people while considering the potentially deadly effects of this discourse on those outside of MSM categorizations particularly focusing on its use in the Canadian Guidelines on STIs.
