Abstract:
This chapter explores the contemporary significance of Gene Kelly for street dance practitioners and cultural critics. Responses to a Volkswagen commercial remake of Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain” solo sequence raise questions about how creativity and originality are assessed in popular dance performances. By comparing the responses of film critics and hip-hop dance practitioners to both Gene Kelly’s performance in Singin’ in the Rain (Donen and Kelly 1952) and the commercial remake, a key theme emerges. Evaluations of creativity reveal how judgments about originality are as much a part of stre

Abstract This new film guide from Oxford traces the film’s genesis, analyzes the music and dance that make Singin’ in the Rain Gene Kelly’s best-known work, and examines some of the modern scholarship and new artworks the film has inspired. Singin’ combines a streamlined 1920s storyline with vivid characters, memorable wisecracks and comedy, romance, riveting dancing, memorable music, gorgeous sets, props, and costumes, and virtuosic camera work. But this supposedly simple, safe modern fairy tale is not simplistic. It is a social satire with a point of view on human nature and morality—what sc

Abstract White Screens, Black Dance analyzes the film and television dances of male screen stars in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. Unpacking the complex physical and visual codes performed by four case studies—the Nicholas Brothers, Gene Kelly, Elvis Presley, and Sammy Davis, Jr.—it argues that each employs Black (Africanist) dance and movement vocabularies in distinct ways, all using them to construct shifting models of masculinity over the course of their careers. In so doing, this book theorizes a practice of appropriation called blackbodying, whereby nonblack performer

Abstract This book proposes that a figure who barely registers in film studies or dance studies offers valuable insight into ideas about “the body” and the reproductive labor that gives rise to images of bodies. The book is the first scholarly study of the dance-in, a dancer who executes a star’s choreography as cameras are being focused and lights set. While they share similarities with doubles and stand-ins, dance-ins do not replace stars’ bodies on screen, and they often serve multiple unseen roles, including as choreographers’ assistants and stars’ coaches, making them vital to the creatio

Genre, Authorship and Contemporary Women Filmmakers examines the significance of women’s contribution to genre cinema by highlighting the work of US filmmakers within and outside Hollywood – Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola, Nancy Meyers, Karyn Kusama and Kelly Reichardt, among others. Exploring genres as diverse as horror, the war movie, the Western, the costume biopic and the romantic comedy, Katarzyna Paszkiewicz interrogates questions of ‘genre’ authorship; the blurring of the borders between commercial and independent cinema and gendered discourses of (de)authorisation that operate within e

Abstract:
In The Films of Walter Hill: Another Time, Another Place, Brian Brems explores how, as action emerged as a full-fledged genre of cinema, Walter Hill established his position in the genre, first as a screenwriter and then as a director. Hill, Brems argues, helped merge the thematic and stylistic concerns of the Western and film noir into a new action cinema, establishing a reputation for mythic, highly-stylized storytelling driven by a relentless pace. Through analyses of Hill’s filmography, this book demonstrates his consistent use of the architecture of classical storytelling to help codify t

Abstract:
Complicating Articulation in Art Cinema argues that art cinema, unlike classical film, draws attention to its disjointed, multi-parted form, but that criticism has too frequently sought to explain this complexity away by stitching the parts together in totalizing readings. This stitching together has often relied on the assumption that complicated character explains articulated form and that the solution to art cinema’s puzzles lies in interpreting each film as the expression of a focalizing character’s internal disturbance. This book challenges this assumption. It argues that the attempt to e
